Etihad ES hosts 3rd Annual Dubai Green Hotel Innovation Conference

Gathering tackles energy efficient measures, sustainability strategies, & retrofitting program for hospitality industry




November 27, 2018 - Etihad Energy Services Company (Etihad ES), a leading energy service company and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) hosted and strategically endorsed the 3rd Annual Dubai Green Hotel Innovation Conference organized by ACM in Dubai, which took place from November 26 to 27, 2018 at the Ritz-Carlton Jumeirah Beach Residence.

The industry-focused conference convened experts, policy and decision makers, and key stakeholders under one roof where participants received updates on technological innovations and the latest best practices being implemented to boost the local hotel sector’s environmental sustainability strategies, while improving operational costs and enhancing profitability.

Ali Al Jassim, CEO, Etihad ES, said: “Over the years, the hospitality industry in Dubai has grown exponentially. We cannot turn a blind eye on the environmental impact of hotels, especially in terms of their natural resource usage and energy consumption. The hospitality industry’s energy costs in Dubai account for a significant portion of total energy consumption. So, in order to decrease its energy demand and consequently contribute to Dubai’s 30 per cent energy demand reduction target by 2030 - we encourage all key stakeholders to take action that has long-term positive impact.”

An estimated 700 hotels are currently operating in Dubai, with more hotels expected to open before 2020. The government strategically plan for effective and efficient measures to be put in place to make the hotel industry more sustainable.

Al Jassim delivered a keynote speech on energy efficiency in hotels during the first day of the event and highlighted the support provided by Etihad ES in the sector. He also discussed the retrofit value chain for hotels that could help reduce their power consumption. Shadi Al-Kadi, Director, Program Management, TAQATI, on the other hand, presented the latest updates on Dubai’s energy efficiency programs. He further elaborated on the significant electricity and water savings and other achievements accomplished to date.

With an aim to retrofit 30,000 buildings by 2030, Etihad ES is gearing up to implement AED 400 million worth of projects, branching out beyond building retrofits into industrial retrofits and solar projects.



Government officials, hotel owners, hotel operators, developers, consultants, financers, contractors, and green technology solution providers which participated in the conference expressed their appreciation to the wide range of learning opportunities regarding energy efficiency and sustainability programs in Dubai, including industry trends and lucrative new business opportunities.

اختتمت شركة الاتحاد لخدمات الطاقة "الاتحاد إسكو"، إحدى الشركات الرائدة في مجال خدمات الطاقة والمملوكة بالكامل من قبل هيئة كهرباء ومياه دبي؛ مؤتمر دبي الثالث للفنادق الخضراء (Dubai Green Hotel Innovation Conference)، بتنظيم من "أي سي أم" (ACM) في دبي، والذي اقيم يومي 26 و27 نوفمبر الجاري في فندق "ريتز كارلتون جميرا بيتش رزيدنس، في دبي. 

وجمع هذا المؤتمر المتخصص نخبة من الخبراء وواضعي السياسات وصناع القرار وأصحاب المصلحة تحت سقف واحد، حيث من اطلع المشاركون فيه على آخر المستجدات المتعلقة بالابتكارات التكنولوجية وأفضل الممارسات المطبقة لتعزيز الاستراتيجيات البيئية والاستدامة في قطاع الفنادق المحلي، وتخفيض التكاليف التشغيلية وتحسين معدلات الربحية ضمن هذا القطاع. 

وقال علي الجاسم، الرئيس التنفيذي لشركة "الاتحاد إسكو": "شهد قطاع الضيافة في دبي على مر السنين نمواً كبيراً، ومع ذلك لا يمكننا أن نغض الطرف التأثير البيئي للفنادق، لا سيما من حيث استخدام الموارد الطبيعية واستهلاك الطاقة. وتمثل تكاليف الطاقة في قطاع الضيافة في دبي نسبة كبيرة من إجمالي استهلاك الطاقة، ومن أجل تقليل الطلب على الطاقة وبالتالي المساهمة في هدف دبي لتخفيض الطلب على الطاقة بنسبة 30% بحلول عام 2030 - نحتاج إلى اتخاذ إجراءات ذات تأثير إيجابي طويلة الأجل.

ويقدر عدد الفنادق العاملة في دبي حالياً بنحو 700 فندق، كما أنه من المقرر افتتاح فنادق جديدة قبل العام 2020. حيث تخطط الحكومة لوضع خطة استراتيجية، واتخاذ إجراءات وتدابير فعالة من أجل جعل الصناعة الفندقية أكثر استدامة. 

وأضاف الجاسم: "من خلال جهودنا المشتركة لجعل دبي مثالاً رائداً في مجال كفاءة الطاقة على مستوى المنطقة والعالم، استضافت "الإتحاد إسكو" مؤتمر دبي للفنادق الخضراء لتسليط الضوء على أهمية الدور الذي تلعبه صناعة الفنادق في تحقيق أهداف دبي لكفاءة الطاقة. من خلال إقرار هذا المؤتمر استراتيجياً، نحن على ثقة من أنه سيرفع الوعي ويساهم في تحسين مستويات الاستدامة والحفاظ على الطاقة في هذه المؤسسات وكذلك معالجة التحديات الملحة من أجل الاقتراب أكثر من تحقيق رؤيتنا المتمثلة في خلق مستقبل مستدام للجميع." 

والقى الجاسم خلال اليوم الأول من المؤتمر كلمة رئيسية حول كفاءة الطاقة في الفنادق، حيث سلط فيها الضوء على الدعم الذي تقدمه "الاتحاد إسكو" في هذا الصدد. كما تطرق الجاسم إلى سلسلة القيمة لمشاريع إعادة تأهيل الفنادق من أجل المساعدة في تخفيض استهلاك الطاقة. من جهته، قدم شادي القاضي، مدير إدارة البرامج لدى "طاقتي"، آخر المستجدات حول برامج كفاءة الطاقة في دبي، كما تحدث بالتفصيل حول أهمية توفير الكهرباء والمياه وغيرها من الإنجازات التي تحققت حتى الآن.

The French Ministry of Interior Selects Gemalto to Secure Critical Communication Mobile Networks

Lung Cancer is one of the most common cancers diagnosed in Lebanon with increasing incidence

Beirut, Lebanon 27 November 2018: Takeda team in Lebanon gathered insights from oncologists and pathologists who practice in different health care settings to understand how Takeda can support lung cancer patients.




Lung cancer is one of the most common cancers diagnosed in Lebanon and its incidence is increasing. The National Cancer Registry data show that 1212 cases were diagnosed with lung cancer in Lebanon in 2015, while it was 993 cases in 2012 and 881 cases in 2009. While we don’t have accurate cancer mortality data from Lebanon, data from most countries indicate that lung cancer is the number one cancer killer.




While lung cancer can occur in non-smokers, it remains largely a smoking-related disease. The best way to prevent it is by not smoking (including cigarettes, cigars, and most relevant to Lebanon, Nargileh). Having a national plan to curtail the smoking epidemic in Lebanon is of utmost importance. At the same time, proper smoking cessation counselling programs can help current smokers kick the habit.

Once diagnosed, most importantly is to catch the disease at an early phase. Emerging data about the role of screening low dose CT scans is very promising.




“Unfortunately, most patients with lung cancer are diagnosed at an advanced stage. For these patients, a multidisciplinary approach is very important.” said Dr Arafat Tfayli, Professor of Clinical Medicine and Director of Research at NK Basile Cancer Institute at the American University of Beirut Medical Center. It starts with proper imaging workup and a representative biopsy by the lung doctor or radiologist. Taking a biopsy large enough to establish the diagnosis and leaving enough material to do proper stains and genetic tests is very important. Therapeutic options for lung cancer are evolving very rapidly and include, in addition to traditional chemotherapy, targeted agents that block a specific gene in the tumor. Most recently, immunotherapy has become an essential component of therapy for this disease.




According to Dr Arafat Tfayli, improved screening and preventive practices should be advocated.

بيروت، لبنان، 27 نوفمبر 2018: قام فريق من "تاكيدا" في لبنان بجمع رؤى من مجموعة من أطباء الأورام الذين يمارسون نشاطهم في المستشفيات ومرافق الرعاية الصحية المختلفة، وذلك من أجل فهم كيف يمكن أن تدعم "تاكيدا" مرضى سرطان الرئة.

وسرطان الرئة هو واحداً من أكثر أمراض السرطان التي يتم تشخيصها في لبنان وتتزايد نسبة الإصابة به. وتظهر بيانات السجل الوطني لأمراض السرطان أنه تم تشخيص 1212 حالة مصابة بسرطان الرئة في لبنان عام 2015، في حين سجلت 993 حالة عام 2012 و881 حالة عام 2009. وفي حين أنه لا توجد لدينا بيانات دقيقة عن وفيات السرطان من لبنان، تشير البيانات من معظم البلدان أن سرطان الرئة هو المسبب الأول لوفيات السرطان. 

وفي حين أنه يمكن أن يصيب سرطان الرئة غير المدخنين، إلا أنه يبقى إلى حد كبير مرضاً مرتبطاً بالتدخين. وتعد أفضل طريقة لمنعه هي عدم التدخين (بما في ذلك السجائر، والسيجار، والأكثر صلة بلبنان النارجيلة). وإن وجود خطة وطنية للحد من انتشار وباء التدخين في لبنان له أهمية قصوى. وفي الوقت نفسه، يمكن أن تساعد برامج الإقلاع عن التدخين المدخنين الحاليين على التخلص من تلك العادة.

وبمجرد تشخيص الإصابة، فالأهم هو اكتشاف وعلاج المرض في مرحلة مبكرة. كما أن البيانات حول دور فحص "صور الأشعة المقطعية منخفضة الجرعة" واعدة جداً.

وقال الدكتور عرفات طفيلي، أستاذ الطب السريري ومدير الأبحاث في معهد نايف باسيل (NK Basile) للسرطان في المركز الطبي في الجامعة الأمريكية في بيروت: "لسوء الحظ، يتم تشخيص معظم مرضى سرطان الرئة في مرحلة متقدمة. وبالنسبة لهؤلاء المرضى، فإن اتباع نهج متعدد التخصصات أمر مهم للغاية. ويبدأ العلاج مع التصوير السليم وفحص أنسجة العينات من قبل طبيب الرئة أو أخصائي الأشعة. ويعد أيضاً أخذ عينة كبيرة بما يكفي لتحديد التشخيص السليم وإجراء الفحوصات والاختبارات الجينية أمر بالغ الأهمية. وتتطور الخيارات العلاجية لسرطان الرئة بسرعة كبيرة وتشمل إلى جانب العلاج الكيميائي التقليدي، العلاجات المستهدفة التي تمنع عمل جين معين في الورم. وفي الآونة الأخيرة أصبح العلاج المناعي عنصرا أساسيا في العلاج لهذا المرض". 

ووفقاً للدكتور عرفات طفيلي ، يجب الدعوة إلى تحسين الفحوصات والممارسات الوقائية للحد من آثار هذا المرض الفتّاك.

ABB New administrative headquarters in New Cairo

Cairo: November 26, 2018: ABB Egypt has moved to a new administrative headquarters on North 90th Street in New Cairo built on an area of ​​8400 square meters.

Designed as a smart & green building, ABB has utilized the latest digital technology from medium and low voltage panels, dry transformers, control panels for operation of generators, air conditioning units, water pumps and firefighting systems related to ABB’s Building Management System (BMS). ABB Solar Inverters units with the addition of ABB UPS system are also installed to ensure an uninterrupted power supply. Also, all mounted equipment in the new building are considered to be energy saving thanks to ABB Drives. In addition, all lighting units in the building are energy-saving and are automatically controlled by ABB KNX systems.
