As the Middle East accelerates its digital transformation and Smart Cities growth, regional data center spend will reach a record-high of USD 5 billion by 2020, industry experts announced today ahead of GITEX Technology Week.

Middle East and North Africa data center spend to reach a record high of USD 5.1 billion by 2020, increasing by 8.5 percent from 2017, according to a recent report by market research firm Statista. Much of this spend will go towards enabling Smart Cities, aligned with the GITEX Technology Week theme of “Experience Future Urbanism”.

Data center modernization ranks as one of the top digital business priorities for regional CEOs in the next two years, with technology infrastructure modernization enabling new digital business models, argues Condo Protego, the UAE-based IT infrastructure and information management consultancy and solutions provider.

“Record-high Middle East data center spend shows that regional CEOs understand that modernizing IT infrastructure can deliver a competitive advantage and enable Smart Cities,” said Savitha Bhaskar, COO, Condo Protego. “GITEX is an ideal platform to showcase how modernized IT can lead to real-time insights for better customer and citizen engagement, new revenue streams, and greater efficiency and data protection.”

Showing the strong opportunity for data center modernization, 81 percent of IT decision-makers agree that without IT transformation, their organizations will no longer be competitive, according to a recent Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG) global survey commissioned by Dell EMC and Intel.

Data center modernization can integrate servers, storage, information management, and data protection, and is an ongoing process rather than a one-off. In the Middle East, Condo Protego is seeing strong demand for the Dell EMC PowerMax solution, the world’s fastest storage array built for mission-critical applications.

“Data center modernization is also the foundation for the Middle East’s organizations and Smart Cities to adopt emerging innovations such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, blockchain, and the Internet of Things,” added Savitha Bhaskar.

من المنتظر أن يصل الإنفاق على مراكز البيانات في منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا إلى مستوىً قياسي بحلول نهاية العقد الجاري، وفقاً لما ذكره خبراء مختصون، وذلك في ضوء تسارع التقدّم الحاصل في مسيرة التحوّل الرقمي ونمو المدن الذكية بالمنطقة.

وتوقّع تقرير صدر حديثاً عن مؤسسة "ستاتيستا" لأبحاث السوق بأن يبلغ الإنفاق على مراكز البيانات في منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا مستوىً قياسياً قدره 5.1 مليارات دولار بحلول العام 2020، بزيادة قدرها 8.5 بالمئة عن العام 2017. وسيذهب جزء كبير من هذا الإنفاق، بحسب التقرير، نحو تعزيز المدن الذكية، بما يتماشى مع الشعار "فرصتكم لمعايشة التمدّن المستقبلي"، الذي يرفعه حدث "أسبوع جيتكس للتقنية 2018" المرتقب انعقاده في أكتوبر المقبل.

ويأتي تحديث مراكز البيانات ضمن أهم أولويات التحوّل الرقمي لدى المديرين التنفيذيين في المنطقة خلال العامين القادمين، وفق ما ترى "كوندو بروتيغو"، الشركة المختصة بالاستشارات وتوريد الحلول في مجال إدارة المعلومات والبنى التحتية التقنية، والتي تؤكّد أن تحديث البنية التحتية التقنية من شأنه أن يتيح تطوير نماذج تجارية رقمية ناجحة.

وفي هذا الإطار، قالت ساڤيتا باسكار، رئيس العمليات في "كوندو بروتيغو"، التي تتخذ من دولة الإمارات مقراً، إن ارتفاع الإنفاق على مراكز البيانات في الشرق الأوسط يُظهر أن الرؤساء التنفيذيين في الشركات العاملة في المنطقة "يدركون قدرة تحديث البنية التحتية التقنية على إكسابهم ميزة تنافسية وتمكين المدن الذكية من الإمساك بزمام التقدّم".

وأضافت المسؤولة في تصريحات تتزامن مع الاستعدادات الجارية في دبي لانعقاد دورة العام 2018 من أسبوع جيتكس للتقنية، حدث تقنية المعلومات والاتصالات الأبرز إقليمياً، إن مكانة جيتكس تجعله "منبراً مثالياً لعرض الطرق التي يمكن بها لتقنية المعلومات الحديثة أن تؤدي إلى إكساب الجهات المعنية أفكاراً ورؤى متعمقة وفورية تتيح المجال أمامها للتفاعل بطريقة أفضل مع السكان والمتعاملين، وتحقيق إيرادات جديدة، والوصول إلى كفاءة أعلى في العمليات وضمان حماية أشدّ للبيانات".

ويتّفق 81 بالمئة من صانعي القرار في قطاع تقنية المعلومات على أن مؤسساتهم لن تكون قادرة على المنافسة من دون إحداث تحوّل حقيقي في تقنية المعلومات، وذلك وفقاً لدراسة استطلاعية عالمية أجرتها حديثاً مجموعة "إنتربرايز ستراتيجي" بتكليف من شركتي "دل إي إم سي" و"إنتل"، ما يُبرز الفرص المهمة الكامنة في تحديث مراكز البيانات.

ويمكن من خلال عملية تحديث مركز البيانات إحداث التكامل بين الخوادم ومعدات التخزين وإدارة المعلومات وحماية البيانات. وفي السياق نفسه، تشهد "كوندو بروتيغو" في منطقة الشرق الأوسط طلباً كبيراً على حلّ PowerMax من "دل إي إم سي"، الذي يُعدّ أسرع مجموعة تخزين في العالم تم تصميمها لتنفيذ تطبيقات المهام الحرجة.

وانتهت باسكار إلى اعتبار أن تحديث مراكز البيانات "أساس متين" يمكّن الشركات والمدن الذكية في الشرق الأوسط من الاعتماد عليه في تبني الابتكارات الناشئة كالذكاء الاصطناعي وتعلم الآلات والبلوك تشين وإنترنت الأشياء.

Digital Transformation Checklist for Business in the Middle East

Recent findings from the MIT Centre for Business[1] show that companies which have embraced digital transformation are 26% more profitable than their average industry competitors and enjoy a 12% higher market valuation. However, digital transformation can be an incredibly complex process. With that in mind, here are five key steps companies in the Middle East need to take to prepare for a successful digital transformation journey.

Align your business transformation strategy to your business goals

A massive 96% of companies see digital transformation as important or critical to their development. However, to avoid investing in new technology for the sake of it, or because you feel you should, it is essential that regional businesses identify where technology change is needed most.

Start by assessing your overall business goals and ask what objectives your business wants to achieve in the short, medium, and long-term. Then ask what technology will help you help achieve those goals. For example, it might be that your primary focus is to expand into new markets quickly, in which case it might be sensible to hold off on that AI investment you’ve been planning, and instead make sure you have a solid cloud infrastructure that can support your mission-critical processes from multiple locations.  

Invest in the right technologies

Digital transformation means different things to different businesses and certainly, heavy spending alone is not going to guarantee success. The Aberdeen Group[2] has identified three digitalisation technologies that have the potential to impact operations–the Internet of Things (IoT) because of its ability to provide operational intelligence, the cloud for its scalability, and big data analytics which can transform data into predictive and actionable insights.

But there’s no one size fits all. According to our research[3], 19% of manufacturers are planning to invest in inventory management, 18% in cloud, big data and customer relationship management, and 17% are planning a mobile technology implementation.

As such, there are multiple options, and regional businesses must ensure that they are investing in the technologies that are right for them. While one business may see immediate benefits from implementing cloud infrastructure, a manufacturer operating out of just one facility might want to look at other options first. For example, they might instead see more immediate ROI from keeping data on-premises, but implementing an ERP solution that uses big data to track orders against stock and supply chain information in real-time. However, if they choose right, their ERP technology should be flexible enough to accommodate growth and an eventual move into the cloud.

Ensure buy-in from key stakeholders within your business

After you’ve identified how digital transformation can support your business goals, now is the time to bring stakeholders on board because successful digital transformation strategies change how businesses work. They impact peoples’ jobs, how they complete tasks, and also how they work together.

Unfortunately, for many businesses, engaging with stakeholders is easier said than done. Staff from the boardroom and beyond need to feel they have a personal and professional stake in the changes being made. Helping them understand the reason for the business’ investment will make it easier to overcome any potential resistance to new processes.

This is particularly important when digital technologies are being implemented to automate tasks that are otherwise completed by staff members, or when it might not be immediately obvious how an investment will deliver ROI.

Turn insight into action

Businesses today are collecting more data than ever, but simply amassing vast amounts of information as a result of digital transformation, is not enough. The key lies in being able to use insights effectively, to guide change or identify new revenue streams.

The latest data analytics suites can provide businesses with crucial information about customer trends and predictions, or information about how products are performing. Some businesses are already using this sort of data, to turn insights into action.

Continually reassess your digital strategy

Understand that digital transformation is a journey that is never complete. New technologies are being launched all the time—from robots that complete tasks on the production line quicker than humans, to machines that can fix equipment problems without intervention. All of these bring with them multiple possibilities for Middle East businesses.

As Charles Darwin once said, “It is not the strongest or the most intelligent who will survive but those who can best manage change”. This applies to more than just the natural world. It is just as true for businesses in the current economy.

It’s important to therefore constantly adapt your digital transformation strategy to new possibilities, reassess your journey, and question your rate of digital change—does it match up to your customer expectations? How does it stack up against your business goals? If these change, perhaps your technology should too.

An international study by Epicor shows that two-in-five industry professionals agree that digital transformation will offer them strong opportunities for growth in the future—proving that the benefits outweigh the costs. Safaqat: Bringing Solar Across Dubai

Solar rooftop panels to be installed on buildings in Hatta and residential villas in Dubai

Dubai, United Arab Emirates, 13 August 2018: Following the success of the flagship Safaqat project in Hatta, whereby 640 villas were retrofitted with solar rooftop panels, Dubai is now extending this innovative approach across additional buildings and villas. The Safaqat programme will support the implementation of solar rooftop panels on buildings across the UAE, with demand coming from Hatta and residential villas in Dubai.

Safaqat is the solar revolution enabler for the UAE and falls under the Shams Dubai initiative which aligns with Dubai’s integrated energy strategy (DIES) 2030, the UAE National Energy Strategy 2050 and UAE Vision 2021. Under Safaqat, eligibility is only possible when the savings are more than the cost of the hardware over its usable life. Each Safaqat deal will cost less for the end user by comparison to their pre purchase scenario.

“Historically, sustainability has had associated cost considerations. Through crowdsourcing, we have sourced products which offer long term savings as well as being energy efficient, made available on the Safaqat platform.” said Ivano Iannelli, Dubai Carbon Chief Executive Officer.




“The provision of solar energy to more buildings and villas via the Safaqat platform shows there is a demand for energy from natural resources. We are excited to meet this demand and also encourage more people to embrace solar energy through the Safaqat platform” added Ivano Iannelli.




The solar rooftop panels are photovoltaic (PV) panels, which generate electrical power by using solar cells to convert energy from the sun into a flow of electrons. Solar cells produce direct current electricity from sunlight which can be used to power equipment or to recharge a battery.


When installed on the villas, the PV panels will result in the reduction of 50 tonnes of carbon emissions, equivalent to the planting of 500 trees, whilst installation on the buildings results in the reduction of 130 tonnes of carbon emissions, equivalent to planting 1300 trees.




The solar in a box kit can easily be dismantled and refitted when moving house or country, and enables residents and business owners to access solar energy, realise savings towards their electricity bills and effectively pay with their savings for the kit. Zero per cent financing is available for the kit, which includes 14 solar panels, a mounting structure, inverter and sun shade, cables and Shams Dubai fees and approvals.

دبي، 13 أغسطس 2018: بعد النجاح الكبير الذي حققه مشروع "صفقات" في مدينة حتا، والذي تم بموجبه تركيب ألواح طاقة شمسية على أسطح 640 فيلا سكنية، اعتمدت إمارة دبي توسيع تنفيذ هذه المبادرة الرائدة لتشمل مبان وفيلات جديدة، حيث سيدعم برنامج "صفقات" تركيب ألواح الطاقة الشمسية على أسطح المباني في عموم دولة الإمارات، مع مراعات تركز الطلب حالياً على مدينة حتا والفيلات السكنية في دبي.

ويعتبر "صفقات" أحد البرامج الهامة التي تعمل في دولة الإمارات تحت مظلة مبادرة "شمس دبي"، ووفق محددات استراتيجية دبي المتكاملة للطاقة 2030، واستراتيجية دبي للطاقة النظيفة 2050، ورؤية الإمارات 2021. ويعمل برنامج "صفقات" على أساس أن جدوى تركيب الألواح الشمسية تحدث فقط في حالة كانت قيمة الوفورات التي ستتحقق أكبر من تكلفة التجهيزات خلال عمرها التشغيلي، لتكون التكلفة على المستهلك النهائي في كل صفقة أقل من حالة عدم تركيب الألواح الشمسية.

والألواح الشمسية هي ألواح ضوئية تعمل على توليد الطاقة الكهربائية من خلال استخدام الخلايا الشمسية لتحويل الطاقة الحرارية القادمة من الشمس إلى كهرباء. وتولد الخلايا الشمسية تياراً كهربائياً مباشراً يمكن استخدامه في تشغيل الأجهزة الكهربائية أو إعادة شحن البطاريات.

ومن المتوقع أن يساهم تشغيل هذه الألواح في الفيلات في انخفاض يصل حجمه إلى 50 طن من الانبعاثات الكربونية، وهو ما يعادل زراعة 500 شجرة، فيما من المتوقع أن يساهم تركيب الألواح على أسطح المباني في تخفيض الانبعاثات الكربونية بمقدار 130 طن أو ما يعادل زراعة 1,300 شجرة.

وتتميز معدات الطاقة الشمسية بسهولة تفكيكها وإعادة تجميعها في حالة الانتقال لمنزل أو حتى بلد آخر، كما أنها توفر الطاقة الشمسية لأصحاب المنازل أو أرباب العمل، مما يمكنهم من تحقيق وفورات في فواتير الكهرباء تتيح لهم توفير المعدات اللازمة. ويتوفر تمويل لتوفير المعدات اللازمة بدون فائدة، حيث تتضمن مجموعة المعدات كل من 14 لوحاً شمسياً، وهيكل، وعاكس، وظل شمسي، والكابلات. وعلى المشتري أيضاً دفع رسوم مبادرة "شمس دبي" وأخذ الموافقات اللازمة.

وتسعى منصة "صفقات" إلى بناء مستقبل مستدام من خلال مساعدة كربون دبي على تسريع تحول دولة الإمارات إلى مقومات الاقتصاد الأخضر.
