AUC ONLY COLLEGE OUTSIDE NORTH AMERICA IN PRINCETON REVIEW’S GREEN GUIDE FOR THIRD CONSECUTIVE YEAR

 

November 20, 2017, Cairo – For the third year in a row, The American University in Cairo (AUC) is the only higher education institution outside of North America to be featured in The Princeton Review’s 2017 Guide to Green Colleges.

This year, The Princeton Review chose only 375 out of 629 schools surveyed to showcase in its guide as the most environmentally responsible colleges, based on the schools’ demonstrated commitment to the environment and sustainability. “We strongly recommend The American University in Cairo and other fine colleges in this guide to the many environmentally-minded students who seek to study and live at green colleges,” said The Princeton Review’s Robert Franek, Senior VP-Publisher.

The guide describes AUC as being “at the forefront of the sustainability movement in the region” and gave the University a top Green Rating score based the University’s sustainability-related policies, practices and programs. “This recognition demonstrates our role as a global and regional model in terms of sustainability,” said Yasmin Mansour, AUC’s sustainability officer. “We hope to continue implementing policies and programs that reinforce our commitment to maintaining an environmentally friendly institution.”Among the “green” policies and programs observed at AUC are: carpool matching program; campus shuttle; incentives to encourage employees to live close to campus; reduced parking fees for carpoolers; policy prohibiting idling; bicycle plan and employee telecommute program.

The Princeton Review has noted an increased interest in green institutions among college applicants surveyed. "Among more than 10,000 teens and parents who participated in our 2017 College Hopes & Worries Survey, 64 percent told us that having information about a school's commitment to the environment would influence their decision to apply to or attend the college."

Queen Margaret University (QMU) Edinburgh - Cairo Graduate Lands Leading Role with Egypt’s Leading Contemporary Arts Festival

CAIRO & EDINBURGH, Scotland--(BUSINESS WIRE/AETOS Wire)-- A graduate from Cairo has secured a leading role with Egypt’s only international multi-disciplinary contemporary arts festival after achieving a postgraduate arts management degree in Scotland, United Kingdom.

Reem Allam, 23, recently graduated with an MA Arts, Festival and Cultural Management from Queen Margaret University (QMU) in Edinburgh. She has now been appointed as Executive Manager of Downtown Contemporary Arts Festival (D-CAF), which takes place over three weeks in March-April each year, at multiple sites in Downtown Cairo.

Reem also has a passion for both writing and acting. She worked as a journalist for Scotland's Arts and Culture Magazine, TV Bomb, and acted in several short-films, including a film that won an award at the 2013 Filmapalooza Festival in LA, USA.

Commenting on her QMU degree and new role with Downtown Contemporary Arts Festival, Reem said: “I was passionate about gaining academic and practical experience in the management of festivals, and so having this area as a focus within the programme was a crucial persuasive factor for me.

“Edinburgh is highly renowned for its rich culture, so I was able to compliment the academic theory of my studies at QMU through actively engaging with the flourishing arts and festivals sector in the city. I couldn't find a better fit than the city of Edinburgh, including the world’s biggest performing arts festival every summer and an impressive year-round arts scene.”

Reem’s new role with Downtown Contemporary Arts Festival involves planning, delivery and evaluation of the upcoming festival editions. She is responsible for managing seasonal festival staff and fundraising, as well as establishing and maintaining close working relationships with a wide range of delivery partners and artists to ensure smooth running of the festival and successful achievement of its yearly goals.

Reem added: “I’ve managed to land a high profile graduate job with an international arts festival at a relatively young age. This is definitely owed to having earned such a specialised master’s degree in arts and festivals management, which is not offered in any university in the Middle East. My ambition is to make a valuable contribution to the still small yet growing festivals scene in Cairo.”

Reem was awarded a Santander Universities Scholarship through QMU, which helped support the cost of postgraduate study.

خريجة جامعة كوين مارجريت بإدنبرة من القاهرة تحصل على وظيفة في مهرجان رائد للفنون المعاصرة في مصر

القاهرة وإدنبرة، اسكتلندا – (بزنيس واير/"ايتوس واير"): حصلت خريجة من القاهرة على منصب رائد في المهرجان الدولي الوحيد متعدد التخصصات للفنون المعاصرة في مصر، بعد حصولها على شهادة دراسات عليا في إدارة الفنون من اسكتلندا بالمملكة المتحدة.

وحصلت ريم علام، البالغة من العمر 23 عاماً، على شهادة ماجستير في الفنون في إدارة المهرجانات والفعاليات الثقافية من جامعة كوين مارجريت ("كيو إم يو") بإدنبرة. وعُيّنت حالياً في منصب المدير التنفيذي لمهرجان وسط البلد للفنون المعاصرة الذي يمتد على فترة ثلاثة أسابيع خلال شهري مارس وأبريل من كل عام، في مواقع عدة في وسط القاهرة.

وتحمل ريم شغفاً للكتابة والتمثيل، حيث عملت كصحفية لمجلة الفنون والثقافة في اسكتلندا، و"تي في بومب" ومثلت في عدة أفلام قصيرة، من ضمنها فيلم حاز على جائزة في مهرجان "فيلمابالوزا" لعام 2013 في لوس أنجلوس بالولايات المتحدة الأمريكية.

وقالت ريم، تعليقاً على شهادتها من جامعة كوين مارجريت، ومنصبها الجديد في مهرجان وسط البلد للفنون المعاصرة: "لطالما كنت شغوفة بالحصول على درجة أكاديمية وخبرة عملية في إدارة المهرجانات، ولذا كان العثور على هذا التخصص ضمن هذا البرنامج الدراسي عامل جذب أساسي بالنسبة لي".

وأضافت قائلةً: "تشتهر إدنبرة بثقافتها الغنية، ولذا كنت قادرة على دعم الشق النظري من دراستي في جامعة كوين مارجريت من خلال المشاركة الفعالة في قطاع الفنون والمهرجانات المزدهر في المدينة. وكانت مدينة إدنبرة المكان المثالي، حيث تضم أكبر مهرجان للفنون المسرحية في العالم خلال فصل الصيف من كل عام، إضافة إلى العديد من الفعاليات الفنية الرائدة طيلة العام".

ويتضمن منصب ريم الجديد في مهرجان وسط البلد للفنون المعاصرة تخطيط وتقديم وتطوير الدورات المقبلة من المهرجان، حيث ستكون مسؤولة عن إدارة طاقم العمل وجمع الأموال للمهرجان الموسمي، إضافةً إلى إقامة وتعزيز شراكات وثيقة مع مجموعة واسعة من الشركاء والفنانين، لضمان سير المهرجان بسلاسة، وتحقيق الأهداف السنوية بنجاح.

في يوم الطفل العالمي ايكيا تطلق حملة " لنلعب من أجل التغيير"

القاهرة،٢٠ نوفمبر ٢٠١٧- بمناسبة "يوم الطفل العالمي" نظمت ايكيا عدة فعاليات للأطفال ، تضمنت ورشة عمل عن "حق الطفل فى اللعب" ، مسابقة للرسم ، وورشة لسرد القصص للاطفال ، وتلوين جدارية كبيرة تحتفي بتأهل مصر لكأس العالم 2018 .  وتأتي هذه الأنشطه تحت شعار" لنلعب من أجل التغيير" ، وهي حملة سنوية بالتنسيق مع اليونيسيف بهدف دعم حقوق الأطفال حول العالم.

AUC ORGANIZES MADE IN EGYPT EVENT TO PROMOTE EGYPTIAN BUSINESSES

November 22, 2017, Cairo – The American University in Cairo (AUC) organized Made in Egypt event in New Cairo campus to encourage Egyptian businesses and young Egyptian entrepreneurs by showcasing their products and services to the University’s students and alumni.

The event hosted exhibitors showcasing handmade products, jewelry, furniture, food, leather, clothing lines among other products that are designed and produced in Egypt using Egyptian materials. The event is a first time collaboration between both the alumni office and Entrepreneurs’ society club (ES), a students’ organization.

Jenny El Boushy, the president of ES, who is studying business administration and economics at AUC said, “one of our aims is to empower Egyptian entrepreneurs and rising startups to sell and showcase their products and services.” El Boushy said that ES aims to bridge the gap between the different stake holders, for example between the investors and the entrepreneurs. ES has been working for the past years to spread entrepreneurship awareness and foster entrepreneurial spirit among AUC students and among the Egyptian youth. ES also aims at providing professional and vocational trainings to nurture the skills of the AUC community.

Among the exhibitors in Made in Egypt event, two fresh graduates of AUC showcased their clothing line, ModaFit.  Rana Babbly, 17’, who studied international marketing and communications and Enji Ali, 16’, who studied journalism, started their fashionable clothing line last March and launched a website for online shopping aiming to compete with their brand internationally. Both partners work on the design and their line is produced in Egypt, “We decided to create a homegrown brand that caters to trendy women who love online shopping. Buying products that are made in Egypt is an ongoing trend and we usually get positive feedback when customers know that our products are designed by Egyptians and made in Egypt.”

Two of AUC alumni also exhibited freshly baked cookies and pies produced by their startup Cookies n Pies. Karim Fayed, AUC alumn, co-founder, said, “Our startup is an Egyptian family startup that isn’t only specialized in baking but in also providing authentic cooking classes, in addition to providing team building training through our sister startup Kitchen 3.”

Raymonda Raef, executive director for alumni engagement and annual fund said, “in its efforts to encourage entrepreneurship in Egypt and to support the Egyptian economy, AUC has opened its Made in Egypt event to other alumni from different universities.”

Fresh graduates of the German University in Egypt have also participated in AUC’s event. Ahmed Daour who studied innovation and strategic management at GUC, took the opportunity to launch his garments line Caj, at AUC’s event, “I am happy to take part in such a successful event. I believe promoting and buying products made in Egypt is the only way out of the economic crisis.”
