Students reflect on intensive global learning experiences in virtual reality, Arabic language, and entrepreneurship

NYU Abu Dhabi J-Term offered 1,200 students unique immersive experiences in the UAE and around the globe




Abu Dhabi – February 2nd, 2019: NYU Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) students are back on campus following their unique academic journeys as part of January Term (J-Term) - a program held annually across three weeks at the start of each year that allows students to explore and engage with the global academic community of which they are a part.




This year’s J-Term saw 1,200 students take 83 courses in Greece, Italy, London, Singapore, India, Morocco, Djibouti, and Jordan, among other global destinations. The courses were each designed to help students delve deeper into their chosen topics and experience contemporary concepts through first hand field research during their travels.




Throughout J-Term, students had access to prominent visiting faculty and scholars including BAFTA and Emmy award winning documentary filmmaker Anthony Geffen; American political consultant Frank Luntz; and renowned geneticist, anthropologist, and author Spencer Wells, among others.




Testimonials from students who took part in J-Term underline NYUAD’s commitment towards creating 21st century global leaders able to respond to a complex and evolving world.




NYUAD Class of 2021 student Suman Razi Ansarifrom from Pakistan remarked on her experience in the Immersive Storytelling course with Anthony Geffen: “Immersive Storytelling was an extremely engaging and inspiring course. The combination of valuable advice from experts in the VR industry, aid from the award-winning director Anthony Geffen himself and the field trips to various production studios made the course unparalleled to any I have taken thus far at university. It was incredible and an honor to be working so closely to Anthony, a pioneer in many aspects of the VR industry and learning directly from his team’s experiences. The course opened my eyes to a whole new area of the IM industry that I had not thought of much before and has actually made me consider taking more Interactive Media courses."



NYUAD Class of 2020 Political Science major Lauris Paegle from Latvia reflected on his experiences in the Colloquial Arabic: Emirati Dialect course: “Upon first moving to Al Ain, we were nervous and confused students. However, upon leaving, not only did we realize that we could speak the language, but how extraordinarily fortunate we were to have the opportunity to not only learn about the local traditions and culture, but in fact live through them and experience them first-hand, whilst spending time with our Emirati families or out exploring on our daily field trips. After this class I can say with confidence that Arabic is one of the languages I can now speak.”




Class of 2021 Economics major Sebastian Caro from Colombia was part of a course called Law in Entrepreneurship; he is already looking back fondly on the benefits of J-term.: “J-term was an academically intense yet intellectually rewarding experience. I was lucky enough to visit different sites around the UAE including the DIFC Courts, Abu Dhabi Commercial Courts, and we had guest lecturers from serial entrepreneurs to lawyers speak to us. The different perspectives given by both the site visits and the guest speakers allowed us to best grasp the class concepts and apply them to real life.”

أبوظبي، الإمارات العربية المتحدة؛ 02 فبراير 2019: اختتم طلاب جامعة نيويورك أبوظبي الفصل الدراسي المكثّف لشهر يناير بعد سلسلة من الرحلات الأكاديمية الفريدة التي شاركوا فيها خارج إطار الصف الدراسي، حيث شهدت دورة هذا العام مشاركة 1,200 طالب في 83 دورة أقيمت في الإمارات، واليونان، وإيطاليا، ولندن، وسنغافورة، والهند، والمغرب، وجيبوتي، والأردن، وغيرها من الوجهات العالمية.

وحظى طلاب الفصل المكثف بفرصة زيارة أبرز المؤسسات التعليمية حول العالم، التي استضافت الدورات وأتاحت لهم التواصل مع الكوادر التعليمية والأكاديمية البارزة، ومنهم الفائز بجائزة إيمي وجائزة الأكاديمية البريطانية لفنون السينما والتلفزيون، ومخرج الأفلام الوثائقية أنتوني جيفين؛ والمستشار السياسي الأمريكي فرانز لونتز؛ وعالم الوراثة والأنثروبولوجيا والمؤلف سبنسر ويلز، وغيرهم. 

وتؤكد شهادات الطلاب الذين شاركوا في الفصل الدراسي المكثّف التزام جامعة نيويورك أبوظبي ببناء قادة عالميين يواكبون معايير القرن الحادي والعشرين، ويتمتعون بكافة المؤهلات المطلوبة لمواجهة التحديات التي يفرضها عالمنا سريع التغيّر.

وحول التحاقها بدورة السرد القصصي المتكامل، وفن تحويل الافتراضي إلى حقيقة خلال الفصل الدراسي لشهر يناير، قالت الطالبة الباكستانية سومان أنصاري، من دفعة 2021 بجامعة نيويورك أبوظبي: "لقد كانت هذه الدورة مصدر إلهام بالنسبة لي. فلقد جعل كل من التوجيه والنصح القيم الذي منحه لنا خبراء صناعة الواقع الافتراضي، ورؤية المخرج العالمي أنثوني جيفين الحائز على جوائز عدة، بالإضافة إلى الرحلات الميدانية التي قمنا بها إلى استوديوهات الإنتاج، من هذه الدورة حقاً تجربة استثنائية مقارنة بأي دورة جامعية أخرى. وكان من عظيم الشرف لنا أن نعمل جنباً إلى جنب مع شخصية ملهمة ورائدة في مجال الواقع الافتراضي مثل أنتوني جيفين، وأن تسنح لنا فرصة التعلم من خبرات فريقه المتميز. لقد فتحت هذه الدورة آفاقي على جوانب جديدة من عالم صناعة الأفلام لم أفكر بها من قبل، ودفعتني إلى الرغبة في دراسة هذا المجال بشكل أعمق".

وقال الطالب اللاتفي لاوريس بايجلي، من دفعة 2020 تخصص علوم سياسية، معلقاً على مشاركته في دورة العامية العربية: اللهجة الإماراتية: "كنت وزملائي مرتبكين عند وصولنا إلى مدينة العين، ولكن عند مغادرتنا كنا مغمورين بالسرور ليس فقط لنجاحنا في التحدّث باللهجة الإماراتية المحلية، وإنما كذلك للفرصة المذهلة التي أتيحت لنا للتعرف على التقاليد والثقافة المحلية والانخراط فيها بكل أبعادها سواء من خلال قضاء الوقت مع العائلات الإماراتية، أو أثناء الرحلات الميدانية التي كنا نقوم بها بشكل يومي. والآن، بعد انتهاء هذه الدورة المميزة، أستطيع أن أقول بكل ثقة أنني أتكلم العربية".

ومن جانب آخر أعرب الطالب الكولومبي سيباستيان كارو، من دفعة 2021 تخصص اقتصاد، عن سروره الغامر لمشاركته في برنامج القانون في ريادة الأعمال؛ والفوائد الجمّة التي نالته إثر مشاركته بالفصل الدراسي المكثف، وقال معلقاً: "كانت مشاركتي في فصل يناير الدراسي المكثّف استثنائية إلى أبعد الحدود، فقد تسنّت لي فرصة زيارة مواقع مختلفة في الدولة بما يشمل محاكم مركز دبي المالي العالمي، ومحاكم أبوظبي التجارية، إلى جانب الاستفادة من المحاضرات التي ألقاها ضيوف البرنامج المتخصصين في مختلف المجالات، بدءاً برواد الأعمال المتسلسلين ووصولاً إلى المحامين، ما سمح لنا بتكوين صورة أكثر شمولاً عن الجانبين العملي والنظري اللذين تنطوي عليهما الدورة وكيفية تطبيق مفاهيمها على أرض الواقع".

Matrix Deconstructed: the trend for targeted ransomware continues

Sophos released a report that delves into Matrix ransomware


Primary means of access is through firewalls that have the Remote Desktop Protocol enabled


As highlighted in Sophos’ 2019 Threat report, targeted ransomware attacks are gaining in prominence


Sophos, a global leader in network and endpoint security, today released a new report about a ransomware family called Matrix. The malware has been operating since 2016 and Sophos has tracked 96 samples in the wild. Like previous targeted ransomware, including BitPaymer, Dharma and SamSam, the attackers who are infecting computers with Matrix have been breaking in to enterprise networks and infecting those computers over Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP), a built-in remote access tool for Windows computers. However, unlike these other ransomware families, Matrix only targets a single machine on the network, rather than spreading widely through an organization.


In its latest paper, SophosLabs reverse engineered the evolving code and techniques employed by the attackers, as well as the methods and ransom notes used to attempt to extract money from victims. The Matrix criminals evolved their attack parameters over time, with new files and scripts added to deploy different tasks and payloads onto the network.




Matrix ransom notes are embedded in the attack code, but victims don't know how much they must pay until they contact the attackers. For most of Matrix's existence, the authors used a cryptographically-protected anonymous instant messaging service, called bitmsg.me, but that service has now been discontinued and the authors have reverted to using normal email accounts. The threat actors behind Matrix make their demand for cryptocurrency ransom in the form of a U.S. dollar value equivalent. This is unusual as demands for cryptocurrency normally come as a specific value in cryptocurrency, not the dollar equivalent. It's unclear whether the ransom demand is a deliberate attempt at misdirection, or just an attempt to surf wildly fluctuating cryptocurrency exchange rates. Based on the communications SophosLabs had with the attackers, ransom demands were for US$2,500, but the attackers eventually reduced the ransom when researchers stopped responding to demands.




Matrix is very much the Swiss Army Knife of the ransomware world, with newer variants able to scan and find potential computer victims once inserted into the network. While sample volumes are small, that doesn't make it any less dangerous; Matrix is evolving and newer versions are appearing as the attacker are improving on lessons learned from each attack.




In Sophos’ 2019 Threat Report we highlighted that targeted ransomware will be driving hacker behavior, and organizations need to remain vigilant and work to ensure they are not an easy target.




Sophos recommends implementing the following four security measures immediately:


Restrict access to remote control applications such as Remote Desktop (RDP) and VNC


Complete, regular vulnerability scans and penetration tests across the network; if you haven’t followed through on recent pen-testing reports, do it now. If you don’t heed the advice of your pentesters, the cybercriminals will win


Multi-factor authentication for sensitive internal systems, even for employees on the LAN or VPN


Create back-ups that are offline and offsite, and develop a disaster recovery plan that covers the restoration of data and systems for whole organizations, all at once

Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries are strengthening their efforts to further enhance the accessibility to affordable housing for low- and middle-income households as part of government efforts to address rapid urbanization and growing population. A new report titled ‘New Trends in Affordable Housing in GCC’, released by Orient Planet Research, an Orient Planet Group venture, discussed the latest trends and achievements by GCC countries in narrowing down the demand-supply gap in the sector.

The region’s growing population is among the key drivers for rising demand, with the young working citizens and residents taking interest to acquire homes within their income reach. The GCC’s population, which mainly comprises young people, climbed by more than 50 per cent over the last decade as shown by the figures released by the Economist. It is expected to reach 53 million in 2020, thereby putting an even greater pressure on the low-end segment of the housing sector.

Nidal Abou Zaki, Managing Director, Orient Planet Group, said: “There is a clear significant shift in the focus towards affordable housing in the GCC. Governments and private developers are increasingly recognizing the demand for affordable housing in the region and various policies and schemes have been established to achieve this goal. However, there remains a need for identifying the market segment in terms of income class to enable developers to create value products and meet target markets.”

A holistic approach, the report underscores, is thus in order to build better communities in the Gulf. It notes the member states’ significant initiatives in order to pave the way for more construction of affordable but quality housing stock.

The UAE’s housing policy has traditionally been focused on providing housing benefits and facilities to Emiratis with low income through the federal government and other entities setup within local governments. The country’s Sheikh Zayed Housing Programme established in 1999, has an existing budget allocation of USD 1.36 billion to assist the housing needs of citizens, especially those which have been orphaned, widows, aged citizens and people with determination.

However, housing policies have been evolving to include wider members of the community. Dubai for instance has taken a step forward and introduced a new low-cost housing policy for both UAE nationals and expatriates, aimed at addressing the gap between income classes. The emirate targets collaboration with property developers and redevelopment of old residential areas to meet its plans.

Other GCC states are also taking bold moves such as Saudi Arabia with plans to construct one million housing units on top of the existing ones in line with the Saudi Vision 2030. Kuwait, for its part, has allocated more funds for the construction of an additional 45,000 housing units as part of its five-year plan (2015-2020), which aims to fix the housing problem in the next three to five years. Similarly, Oman has allocated OMR90 million for its housing projects as stated in the General Budget for FY 2019. Meanwhile, Bahrain widely invests in various social housing schemes which has provided more than 36,000 support services to citizens through houses and flats, housing loans, flats in subsidized rental, and residential plots.

To improve the gap in the market, the report finds housing experts noting the importance of reinforcing public-private partnerships, focusing on resolving lack of credit and mortgage facilities, initiating more social housing finance schemes, and protecting the rights of lenders in case the borrower defaults to incentivize banks to extend home loans to those in need.

In addition to the allocation of funds, the report points out that the focus can also be on project management, proper framing of eligibility criteria, protection of housing standards, and partnerships with private agencies for efficient maintenance of public housing communities.

The conference will also examine ways to strengthen cooperation between East and West to achieve global peace, as well as the responsibility of international humanitarian organisations to maintain harmony and security. Its sessions will highlight the role of religious, educational, cultural and media organisations in raising awareness of the importance of human fraternity in society.

Furthermore, attendees will discuss the challenges and opportunities facing human fraternity, outlining a course of action to leverage human conscience and religious ethics to address the underlying causes of violence, such as selfishness, intolerance and hatred.

‏‏دبي، الإمارات العربية المتحدة، 3 فبراير 2019‏‏: ‏‏رصدت ‏‏مختبرات شركة «إف 5 نتوركس» أبرز سرقات العملة المشفرة على مدى السنوات السبع الماضية، وجرى تحديد 73 واقعة سرقة كبرى. في عام 2011، كانت قيمة عملة بيتكوين تكافئ الدولار الأمريكي. أما اليوم ورغم التقلبات الكبيرة فإن قيمتها تقارب 3500 دولار. وشهد‏‏ت‏‏ الفترة ذاتها ‏‏تفاقم ‏‏حالات سرقة العملات المشفرة لاثني عشر ألف مرة تقريبًا. ‏‏كما ‏‏وجدت مختبرات «إف 5 نتوركس» بأن متوسط ‏‏ال‏‏قيمة المسروقة في الواقعة بلغ حوالي 31 مليون دولار ‏‏من سرقات بيانات العملة المشفرة ‏‏على مدى السبع سنوات الماضية‏‏. ‏

‏‏و‏‏أظهر البحث الذي أجرته مختبرات «إف 5 نتوركس» أن أكثر الهجمات التي تضرب الخدمات التقنية ‏‏تلك ‏‏تستهدف بورصات العمل‏‏ة‏‏ المشفرة (63% من مجمل الهجمات)، وتعمل هذه البورصات بمثابة المكافئ الرقمي لبورصات العملات المالية التقليدية. حيث تمكن هذه المواقع من بيع أو شراء أنواع مختلفة من العملات المشفرة، مما يجعلها نقطة وصل ‏‏لإجراء ‏‏عمليات تبادل عالية القيمة. ‏

‏‏تتبع ‏‏بورصات العمل‏‏ة ‏‏المشفرة آليات تخزين تدعى المحافظ، وتصنف في فئتين: "المحفظة الساخنة" وهي التي تتصل بشبكة الانترنت ‏‏والمستخدمة ل‏‏تخزين العملات المشفرة المتبادلة في المعاملات من يوم إلى آخر. تماثل المحفظة الساخنة من حيث المبدأ محفظة النقود التقليدية. ويمكن تشغيل المحافظ الساخنة في بورصات العملات المشفرة لتسهيل عمليات التبادل، فضلاً عن إمكانية تشغيلها كبرامج مستقلة على الكمبيوتر أو الجهاز المحمول. لذلك فإن احتمال سرقتها من قبل المجرمين السيبرانيين مرتفع. ‏

‏‏الفئة الثانية هي "المحفظة الباردة" التي لا تتصل بشبكة الانترنت وتستفيد منها تقنيات العملات المشفرة لأجل التقليل من المخاطر. أفضل المحافظ الباردة هي الأنظمة المعزولة، مثال وحدة تخزين "يو إس بي" المدعمة بكلمة مرور قوية. يمكن رؤية المحافظ الباردة في بورصات العمل‏‏ة‏‏ المشفرة على هيئة قواعد بيانية منفصلة عالية التشفير، ويتطلب فتحها استخدام مفتاح خاص بمالك المحفظة. يتضاعف معدل سرقة المحافظ الساخنة إلى ثلاث مرات مقارنة بالمحافظ الباردة. ويمكن أن تستهدف أيضًا برامج المحافظ المثبتة على أجهزة واقعة خارج بورصات العمل‏‏ة ‏‏المشفرة. وتمثل نسبة تلك الحالات حوالي سُبع إجمالي سرقات العملات المشفرة. ‏

‏‏وبهذه المناسبة، قال ‏‏راي بومبون، رئيس أبحاث التهديدات‏‏ لدى‏‏ شركة «إف 5 نتوركس»‏‏: "‏‏بدأت الحكومات حول العالم في الآونة الأخيرة بتنظيم قطاع العملات المشفرة، وباشرت بعضها فعلاً في رسم تدابير الأمن السيبراني لهذا القطاع. وتعتبر اليوم اللائحة التنظيمية الكورية رقم 5.5.7 (لائحة الإشراف على العمليات المالية الالكترونية) إحدى التشريعات الرائدة في هذا الصدد، إذ أنها تتعامل مع تدابير الأمن السيبراني لبورصات العمل‏‏ة‏‏ المشفرة بالطريقة ذاتها التي تتبعها المؤسسات المالية التقليدية. ونأمل رؤية مزيد من الحكومات تحذو حذوها في وقت قريب‏‏".‏
