AUC ALUMNAE AMONG WORLD'S MOST INFLUENTIAL ARAB WOMEN

June 6, 2017, Cairo – Eight alumnae of The American University in Cairo (AUC) have recently been named by Arabian Business among its list of The World's Most Influential Arab Women. The alumnae named in the list are Shahira Zeid '83; Sahar Nasr ’85, ’90; Lina Atallah ’04; Haifaa Al-Mansour ’97; Mona El Tahawy ’90,'92; Mona El Tahawy ’90,'92; Lamees Al Hadidi ’87, ’90; Ahdaf Soueif (MA ’73) and Elham Mahfouz ’84.

Shahira Zeid '83, who received her bachelor's in business administration, was recognized for her role as the chair of MZ Investments, a holding company that operates in the energy, logistics, tourism and hospitality sectors. She is also vice chair of Maridive Group.

Sahar Nasr ’85, ’90, who received her bachelor's and master's in economics from AUC, is both Egypt's minister of international cooperation and minister of investment. She has also worked as a leading economist at the World Bank. 

Lina Atallah ’04, who received her bachelor's in journalism and mass communication, is the founder of Mada Masr. Before that, she was the editor of Egypt Independent. 

Haifaa Al-Mansour ’97, who received her bachelor's in English and comparative literature, is Saudia Arabia's first female filmmaker and the first to shoot a feature-length film, Wadjda, in Saudi Arabia in 2012.

Mona El Tahawy ’90,'92, who earned her bachelor's and master's in mass communication, is an award-winning New York-based journalist, commentator and international lecturer on Arab and Muslim issues.

Lamees Al Hadidi ’87, ’90, who received her bachelor's and master's in journalism and mass communication, is a leading news anchor and host of the daily news show on CBC channel titled Hona Al Asema (Here is the Capital).

Ahdaf Soueif (MA ’73), who received her master's in English literature, is an acclaimed author, most recently writing The Map of Love. She is also the founder of the Palestine Festival of Literature.  

Elham Mahfouz ’84, who received her bachelor's in business administration, is CEO for the Commercial Bank of Kuwait and has more than 30 years of experience in the industry.

5G is on the horizon, but what will happen in the next 5 years?

The ability to download a full-length HD movie in seconds, the low latency to enable remote surgery and the availability of battery lifetimes beyond 10 years are all examples of what we expect to see in the next 5 years with the introduction of 5G!

The question on everyone’s mind is what is the tangible benefit of 5G? What impact will it have? And what is its potential for our business?

A report launched this year by Ericsson, Opportunities in 5G: The View from Eight Industries, shows that 94% of executives from eight major industries rate next-generation (5G) mobile networks a top strategic priority. It also reveals the anticipated impact of 5G, the next-generation mobile technology, on specific industries. It examines how these industries expect to apply 5G, which specific uses of the new technology are likely to dominate in their industry, and what business reasons will drive them to move to 5G.

Manufacturing is one industry identified from the study that shows a strong market potential for ICT players when addressing 5G industry digitalization. As mentioned above, manufacturing is currently impacted by a number of trends such as hyper competition, increased volatility from short business and product cycles, and smart factories. However, 5G technologies can help to address and support these key trends and challenges and make a significant impact. One key example is enabling and enhancing critical control of production line robotics. Critical control of production line robotics includes tethered or untethered robotics that are controlled, monitored, and can be reconfigured remotely. This technology could be used in factory floor production reconfiguration and layout changes, real-time analysis and even to steer a robot’s movement from a remote location.

We are supporting a lot of new industry use cases and other industries in their digitalization journey. While operators may still profit from focusing on one of the steps in the value chain, they could achieve much larger growth if they embrace every step. Using 5G to solve the key challenges in digitalization for industries (such as manufacturing and automotive for example), operators can become more than network developers, addressing additional revenue streams by becoming service enablers or even service creators.

اكد شفيق طرابلسي رئيس وحدة الشبكات في إريكسون الشرق الأوسط وأفريقيا ان القدرة على تحميل فيلم كامل عالي الدقة بتقنية HD في ثوانٍ معدودة ومعدلات السكون المنخفضة في الشبكة لتمكين إجراء العمليات الجراحية عن بعد إضافة إلى امتداد عمر البطارية لأكثر من 10 سنوات جميعها أمثلة على الأمور والحقائق التي نتوقع رؤيتها في السنوات الخمس المقبلة مع إطلاق شبكات تكنولوجيا الجيل الخامس 

والسؤال الذي يستحوذ على تفكير الجميع حالياً هو؛ ما هي الفوائد الملموسة التي ستأتي بها تكنولوجيا الجيل الخامس؟ وما هي تأثيراتها على حياة الناس؟ وما هي الإمكانات التي ستضيفها لقطاعات الأعمال؟

وكان التقرير الذي أطلقته إريكسون هذا العام "فرص في تكنولوجيا الجيل الخامس : وجهات النظر في 8 قطاعات" قد أوضح أن نحو 94٪ من المديرين التنفيذيين في 8 قطاعات كبرى يعتبرون شبكات الجيل الخامس بمثابة استراتيجية غاية في الأهمية تتصدر أجندة أولوياتهم.

 ويكشف التقرير عن التأثيرات المتوقعة التي ستحدثها تكنولوجيا الجيل الخامس في قطاعات محددة، إضافة إلى دراسة الطرق التي ستطبق بها قطاعات الأعمال تكنولوجيا الجيل الخامس حيث من المرجح أن تهيمن استخدامات محددة للتكنولوجيا الجديدة على هذه القطاعات، فضلاً عن الأسباب العملية التي تدفعها للانتقال إلى الجيل الخامس.

واوضح طرابلسي ان قطاع التصنيع يعد من القطاعات التي تم تحديدها في الدراسة، حيث يُظهر هذا القطاع إمكانات قوية في السوق لشركات تكنولوجيا المعلومات والاتصالات فيما يتعلق برقمنة القطاع عبر استخدام تكنولوجيا الجيل الخامس وكما ذكرت سلفا يتأثر قطاع التصنيع حالياً بعدد من الاتجاهات مثل المنافسة الشديدة، وزيادة التقلبات الناتجة عن دورات الأعمال الانتاج القصيرة إضافة إلى ظهور المصانع الذكية ومع ذلك يمكن لتكنولوجيا الجيل الخامس أن تساعد في معالجة هذه التحديات ودعم الاتجاهات الرئيسية وإحداث تأثيرات إيجابية كبيرة ومن الأمثلة الرئيسية على ذلك تمكين وتعزيز التحكم بروبوتات خطوط الإنتاج. 

ويشمل التحكم بروبوتات خط الإنتاج الاعتماد على روبوتات مربوطة أو غير مربوطة يتم التحكم بها وتنظيم عملها عن بعد ويمكن استخدام هذه التكنولوجيا في إعادة تنظيم إنتاج أرضية المصنع وتغييرات التخطيط والتحليل السريع وحتى لتوجيه حركة الروبوت من مكان بعيد.

وقال إننا ندعم الكثير من حالات الاستخدام الجديدة في القطاع إضافة إلى دعم رحلة التحول الرقمي عبر كافة القطاعات وفي الوقت الذي لايزال فيه مشغلو الخدمات يستفيدون من التركيز على إحدى الخطوات في سلسلة القيمة، فإن بإمكانهم تحقيق نمو أكبر عندما يتمكنون من إتمام كافة الخطوات ومن خلال استخدام تكنولوجيا الجيل الخامس لمواجهة التحديات الرئيسية الخاصة بالتحول الرقمي للقطاعات (مثل التصنيع والسيارات على سبيل المثال)، يمكن للمشغلين أن يصبحوا أكثر من مجرد مطوري شبكات والحصول على مصادر عائدات إضافية عبر التحول إلى مزودي ومطوري خدمات لتمكين القطاعات من الانتقال إلى العالم الرقمي.

فندق مكة هيلتون للمؤتمرات يحقق نجاحًا هائلًا خلال أول رمضان بعد افتتاحه

التركيز على توظيف المواطنين السعوديين والنساء ضمن هذا المشروع الضخم

المملكة العربية السعودية، مكة، 22 يونيو 2017: حقق فندق مكة هيلتون للمؤتمرات، أول فندق في مدينة مكة يجمع ما بين التجهيزات والمرافق المناسبة للضيافة والأعمال، نجاحًا هائلًا في أول رمضان له بعد افتتاحه في شهر أبريل الماضي، وذلك مع استضافة أكثر من مليوني زائر ومعتمر من مختلف أرجاء العالم حضروا لأداء فرائضهم الدينية وزيارة البيت الحرام خلال هذا العام، حيث جاء القادمون من إندونيسيا وباكستان والهند في رأس قائمة ضيوف بيت الله الحرام.

ويتضمن الفندق الذي يتميز بإطلالته على المسجد الحرام والكعبة المشرفة، أول مركز للمؤتمرات يمكنه استضافة أكثر من 1600 شخص في أي وقت، ليكون بذلك الفندق الأكثر تفردًا على مستوى المنطقة والوجهة الأبرز بالنسبة للضيوف القادمين إلى المدينة لتفرده ومرافقه المتنوعة التي يتمتع بها.

ومع حلول عام 2025، فمن المتوقع أن يصل أكثر من 30 مليون زائر ومعتمر لزيارة مكة من جميع أنحاء العالم خلال شهر رمضان المبارك، ليزيد الطلب بذلك على وجهات خدمات الضيافة مثل مركز مكة هيلتون للمؤتمرات. وبالإضافة إلى وجود 764 غرفة وجناح، فإن الفندق يتضمن أيضًا مجموعة من المطاعم والمقاهي التي تلبي طلب الضيوف والزائرين القادمين إلى مكة مع الحفاظ على معايير العالية.

وإلى جانب ذلك فقد كانت عملية توظيف واستقطاب المهارات مستمرة خلال الأشهر الماضية، مع استهداف توظيف 40% على الأقل من المواطنين السعوديين ضمن فريق العمل. كما كشف السيد علاف أن النساء يشكلن حوالي 25 % من فريق العمل ضمن الفندق، حيث صرح بقوله: "إن الفرص الإيجابية المتوفرة للنساء الموهوبات في المملكة تشهد تطورًا هائلًا، ونحن بالتأكيد نساهم في تحقيق هذا التطور".

وأضاف: "نحن نشجع أصحاب المواهب من النساء ليكنّ قادة المستقبل، وحتى الآن فإننا نشهد استجابة مذهلة منهن للمساهمة في نجاح هذا المشروع".

New spectral eye video database SPEED revolutionises eye-tracking

Techniques to acquire spectral data have been static for a long time - until now. Exciting and novel spectral video technologies are emerging, allowing us to extract increasingly dynamic knowledge from light. Using a spectral video device in eye-tracking, computational spectral imaging and eye-tracking researchers from the University of Eastern Finland have created a novel – first of its kind – combined spectral video/spectral image database: the SPectral Eye video Database, SPEED.

The potential of spectral imaging technologies has been shown in many fields, such as medicine, life science and industry where the spectrum has been used, for example, to differentiate healthy and unhealthy tissue or separate real and counterfeit objects. However, these technologies are often too slow to capture spectral images from dynamic objects. This created an evolutionary need for the extension of spectral imaging to the recording of spectral video. In a spectral video, each frame of the video stream contains a spectral image cube. In this way, spectral video systems capture spatial, spectral and temporal information, and combine the advantages of spectral imaging and video capture.

A recent PhD thesis completed at the University of Eastern Finland explored the potential of such spectral video technology by testing an existing spectral video system and challenging it in practical eye-tracking application. As a result, the study developed protocols for the characterization of spectral video that may serve as future guidelines on spectral video systems evaluation in this emerging field. In addition, the study used a spectral video camera to capture spectral videos of a fast-moving object: the human eye. As a very concrete outcome of the study, the SPectral Eye vidEo Database, SPEED, was born. 

The unique database, SPEED, was motivated by the challenges faced in eye-tracking, especially under harsh conditions. When users wear eyewear or make-up, reflections and extreme eye positions interfere with eye-tracking technologies. The team proposed and demonstrated that spectral signatures can be exploited to create new approaches for imaging, training, analysis and interpretation of eye-tracking data, especially in harsh conditions. SPEED consists of over 180 spectral videos, it continues to grow and it is publicly available to all researchers (e.g., for teaching-related needs or creating and testing new methods of dynamic eye analysis via spectra). Although published only in 2016, the database has already attracted attention from the scientific community and industry. Aside from its use in eye tracking, SPEED also has the potential to be utilised in other eye-related research areas, such as medicine, biometrics, and eye and vision research.

IAEA Director General commends Russia’s role in the development of the global nuclear power generation market and non-energy peaceful nuclear applications

Cairo, 8^th June 2017

IAEA Director General Yukia Amano inspected several Russian nuclear facilities as part of his visit to the St Petersburg International Economic Forum. Mr Amano visited the Leningrad Nuclear Power Plant, where he was introduced to the operation of the revamped power units and inspected the new launch-ready Generation 3+ VVER-1200 unit of the NPP.

During his visit, Mr Amano was accompanied by Deputy Director General at the IAEA, Head of Nuclear Power Department Michael Chudakov, Rosatom’s Deputy CEO for International Relations Nikolay Spasskiy, Permanent Representative of Russia to international organizations in Vienna Vladimir Voronkov, and Deputy Head of Rostekhnadzor, Russian technical regulatory authority, Alexey Ferapontov.

During his visit, Mr Amano expressed his high opinion of the Leningrad BPP’s safety systems, commenting that the new power unit comes originally equipped with additional protection systems compared to earlier projects. ‘The VVER-1200 unit’s multi-level produces a very powerful impression – in the event one system fails, another comes into effect, which is very correctly done, Mr Amano noted.

Earlier, Mr Amano visited the manufacturing facilities of the Baltic shipyard and construction site of New Gen icebreakers, including the Arktika, a nuclear icebreaker which is the future flagship of Russian icebreaker fleet. Addressing the media at the conclusion of his visit, Mr Amano commented that Russia is contributing greatly to the IAEA’s work, both in the field of nuclear power and non-energy nuclear applications. ‘Nuclear power is the cleanest and most environmentally friendly method of energy generation in terms of its minimum greenhouse gas emissions. The development of nuclear power is crucial to improving society’s welfare, and it will continue. Russia is a very active player in this process,’ he said.

المدير العام للوكالة الدولية للطاقة الذرية يمتدح دور روسيا في تطوير سوق عالمية لتوليد الكهرباء من الطاقة النووية والتطبيقات النووية السلمية

قام المدير العام للوكالة الدولية للطاقة الذرية يوكيا أمانو بتفقد عدة مرافق نووية روسية كجزء من زيارته إلى منتدى سانت بطرسبرغ الاقتصادي الدولي. قام السيد أمانو بزيارة محطة لينينغراد للطاقة النووية، حيث تم تعريفه على تشغيل وحدات الطاقة التي تم تجديدها، وقام بالتفتيش على الإطلاق الجديد للجيل الثالث بلس (+3 ) من  وحدات مفاعل VVER بقوة 1200 ميجا وات في محطة الطاقة النووية.

ورافق السيد أمانو خلال زيارته كل من نائب المدير العام للوكالة الدولية للطاقة النووية ورئيس دائرة الطاقة النووية ميخائيل تشوداكوف، ونائب المدير التنفيذي لشركة روساتوم لشؤون العلاقات الدولية نيكولاي سباسكي، والمندوب الدائم لروسيا لدى المنظمات الدولية فلاديمير فورونكوف، ونائب رئيس سلطة  التنظيم التقنية الروسية اليكسي فيرابونتوف.

وخلال زيارته، عبر السيد أمانو عن تقديره الشديد لأنظمة السلامة بمحطة محطة لينينغراد للطاقة النووية، وأضاف معلقا بأن وحدة الطاقة الجديدة تأتي أصلا مزودة بأنظمة حماية إضافية بالمقارنة مع مشاريع سابقة. وأشار السيد أمانو إلى أن: "  الطبقات المتعددة  لمفاعل VVERبقوة  1200 ميجا وات تثير انطباعا قويا، وفي حال فشل أحد  الأنظمة ، فإن نظاما آخر يدخل حيز التنفيذ بكل دقة."

وسبق أن قام السيد أمانو بزيارة إلى مرافق التصنيع في حوض بناء السفن على بحر البلطيق، وإلى موقع بناء كاسحات جليد نيوجن، بما في ذلك أيضا "أركتيكا" وهي كاسحة جليد تعمل بالطاقة النووية ، والتي ستكون في صدارة أسطول كاسحات الجليد الروسية.

وأثناء مخاطبته وسائل الإعلام في ختام زيارته، قال السيد أمانو إن روسيا تساهم وبشكل عظيم في ما تؤديه الوكالة الدولية للطاقة الذرية من أعمال  في مجال الطاقة النووية والتطبيقات النووية لغايات غير إنتاج الطاقة. وأضاف: " الطاقة النووية هي الوسيلة الأنظف والأكثر صداقة للبيئة لتوليد الطاقة فيما يختص بالحد الأدني لما ينبعث منها من غازات تعمل على تسخين الغلاف الجوي. إن تطوير الطاقة النووية يشكل عاملا حاسما لدعم الخير العام للمجتمع، وسوف يستمر تطويرها. وروسيا لاعب نشط في هذه العملية".
