PROFESSOR YEHEA ISMAIL AT AUC’S “FACULTY AT THE FOREFRONT” SERIES: BIOCHIPS WILL REVOLUTIONIZE CANCER DIAGNOSIS

February 26, 2017, Cairo – In the fifth series titled, “BioChips: Revolutionizing Future Disease Detection and Diagnosis”, held at The American University in Cairo (AUC), Yehea Ismail, director of the Nanoelectronics and Devices Center at AUC and Zewail City and professor in the Department of Electronics and Communications Engineering at AUC discussed how BioChips are planned to replace more traditional medical diagnostic functions, such as cancer detection. “They are cheaper, faster and can be available widely, so they will allow advanced cancer detection to occur in areas not possible in the past. They will also enable “telemedicine,” which is the remote diagnosis or treatment of patients using technology. Biochips will revolutionize the way the medical field diagnoses cancer and other diseases by allowing for quicker and more effective treatment due to early and accurate diagnosis,” said Ismail.

Ismail discussed the research efforts carried out by the Center of Nanoelectronics and Devices at AUC in collaboration with Zewail University in designing and testing biochips to detect and diagnose some diseases and the future possibilities for developing the use of the chips.

Ismail explained that biochips are advanced electronic chips with the added functions of sensing and manipulating bio-cells. There are several types of biochips under development, including many types of sensors and actuators. Sensors are usually chemical, and actuators can be as complex as tiny mechanical pumps and channels (MEMs) to move fluids and cells. While these systems can be very accurate, they are hard to manufacture in large numbers and are expensive for customers. “Because of this, our research has focused on a subcategory of biochips that builds on the more standard and mainstream electronics technology: Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductors (CMOS),” he added.

The advantage of using standard CMOS technology, as he explained, is that there are many established places around the world that can manufacture any chip quickly, reliably, cheaply and in mass numbers. “The challenge is that we cannot build MEMs for moving cells and fluids in this standard technology. So, to replace MEMs, we are exploiting relatively newly discovered forces, where cells can be moved by applying electrical signals to electrodes without any mechanical parts. We are also replacing chemical sensors with physical sensors that can detect the physical characteristics of a cell.”

Ismail said, “We are building CMOS biochips that can apply electrical signals to electrodes on the chip to move sample cells. By sensing the motion of the cells, we can deduce some physical characteristics of the cells. These characteristics are different for normal and cancerous cells, which is what allows the presence of cancer to be detected.”

Biochips are part of a larger technological explosion in science and a new trend where electronics are integrated with other technologies into one tiny chip for a wide variety of purposes, such as medicine. While in the past, as Ismail explained, the communications and computation fields were pushing CMOS and biochip development forward, the biomedical field is now a new force driving developments in CMOS technology, which is leading to the creation of technologies like a biochip for cancer detection.

In the future, Ismail added, it is projected that biochips will be widely and cheaply available in pharmacies and medical offices, and they are expected to perform ever-more complex functions including full blood diagnosis, detection of a wide variety of diseases including viral ones, and DNA analysis.

“There will hopefully be a world of connected medical practices, from research and development to having an accessible medical detection device in people's home and, finally, treatment from a healthcare provider. This will be particularly relevant to cancer detection, but will certainly be applicable across all fields,” he said.

Earlier today, the official inauguration of “Alburouj,” a rising star in the real estate industry, was steered by the real estate holding Companies Abu Dhabi Capital Group (ADCG) and Al Ain Holding’s board of Directors. The eventful day was meant for chief representatives and decision makers to fly in from their Emirati headquarters and ascertain their continuous commitment, to the first official engagements in implementing CGP’s first real estate project in Egypt, Alburouj. The visit focused its attention on the start of the construction onsite, which started in parallel to the sales operation to show and demonstrate the commitment of the group on their time promise on the project’s delivery. The Board then moved to CGP’s newly opened Sales Center on Orouba street in Heliopolis for its official launch to the public, followed by a visit to the CGP headquarters in the fifth settlement, where the group discussed their plans for 2017 going forward.

قام اليوم أعضاء مجلس إدارة الشركات القابضة "أبو ظبى كابيتال جروب" و"العين" بإفتتاح مشروع "البروج" العقاري، وذلك بحضور السيد/ عبد الحميد محمد سعيد، رئيس مجلس الإدارة وكل من السيد/ خديم عبد الله الدرعي، نائب رئيس مجلس الإدارة، والسيد/ جاسم الصديقي، والسيد/ محمد زكي، والسيد/ إيميت وانتشو، الرئيس التنفيذى لشركة أبو ظبى كابيتال جروب، والمهندس/ وليد الهندي، الرئيس التنفيذى لشركة كابيتال جروب بروبرتيز، مع حضور المستشار العام ورئيس الشئون القانونية بشركة أبو ظبى كابيتال جروب السيد/ معتز كريشان، وممثلي فريق شركة كابيتال جروب بروبرتيز.

كان الهدف من اليوم الحافل أن يقوم كبار الرؤساء وصناع القرار فى الشركات الأم بزيارة موقع المشروع، تأكيدا على التزامهم المستمر في تنفيذ "البروج" وهو أول مشروع عقاري لشركة كابيتال جروب بروبرتيز في مصر. وركزت زيارة الوفد اهتمامها على بدء أعمال البناء في الموقع، والتي بدأت بالتوازي مع عمليات البيع لإثبات التزام المجموعة بوعودها الخاصة بموعد التسليم وإنجاز المشروع.

Arab French Dairy uses Gulfood 2017 to ramp up exports to GCC and beyond

AFDPL will be participating in Gulfood 2017 in Dubai to launch ‘Cheeze to Squeeze’ – a cream cheese snack in a new innovative on-the-go pack.

Dubai- Cairo – 25 February 2017: Arab French Company for Dairy and Cheese Products (AFDPL), a leading Egyptian dairy products manufacturer specializing in premium cheese products and a subsidiary of SAVENCIA Fromage & Dairy, announced that it will participate in the Gulfood exhibition (gulfood.com), held from 26 February to 2 March 2017, in Dubai.

The new launch is a new addition to the popular Milkana brand, creating a new category of cheese snacks. AFDPL will be using the exhibition to ramp up exports to the GCC and beyond. The new product, aptly called ‘Cheeze to Squeeze’, is available via Milkana distribution partners across the Middle East and North Africa.

البنك العربي يحصد لقب أفضل بنك في الشرق الأوسط لعام 2016

اختارت مجلة "آسياموني Asiamoney" البنك العربي كأفضل بنك في الشرق الأوسط عن العام  2016، وذلك ضمن استطلاع أجرته المجلة ضم عدداً من بنوك منطقة الشرق الأوسط. ويأتي هذا الإختيار ليعكس قدرة وتميز الأداء العام للبنك، ومركزه المالي، وأهميته في الأسواق الإقليمية.

وحصد البنك العربي هذا اللقب بناءً على عدة اعتبارات من قبل فريق الباحثين المختص في مجلة "آسياموني Asiamoney"، وهي إحدى إصدارات مؤسسة "يورومونيEuromoney " العالمية وتُعنى بالقطاع المالي والمصرفي في قارة آسيا ومقرها هونغ كونغ، حيث تضمنت تلك الاعتبارات أداء البنك المتميّز، وجودة الخدمات التي يقدّمها لمختلف القطاعات، وقدرته على الموازنة بين حاجة العملاء وحقوق المساهمين؛ وقد تم نشر نتائج الاستطلاع كخلاصة لأداء البنوك خلال العام 2016 ضمن عدد المجلة الذي صدر مؤخراً.

وبالإضافة إلى الجائزة الإقليمية، حصل البنك العربي كذلك على جائزة أفضل بنك في الأردن كما تم منح المدير العام التنفيذي للبنك العربي السيد نعمة صباغ، جائزة المساهمة المتميزة في القطاع المصرفي تقديراً لجهوده في القطاع المصرفي العربي على مدار أربعين عاماً. وكان الصباغ قد حصل في العام 2014 على جائزة المساهمة المتميزة في القطاع المصرفي في الشرق الأوسط من مجلة يورومني العالمية (Euromoney) بالإضافة لاختياره في نفس العام من قبل اتحاد المصارف العربية لجائزة الشخصية المصرفية العربية .
