HASSAN EL-FAWAL APPOINTED DEAN OF AUC’S SCHOOL OF SCIENCES AND ENGINEERING

October 4, 2016, Cairo – The American University in Cairo (AUC) has appointed Hassan El-Fawal as the new dean of the School of Sciences and Engineering. El-Fawal brings with him not only a wealth of academic knowledge and administrative experience, but is also a living embodiment of the liberal arts philosophy. “We pride ourselves at AUC for having a liberal arts tradition that is a cornerstone of the university, and, to a great extent, I’ve been involved in that tradition in my own academic career. It’s central to my educational approach,” said El-Fawal. “I see in the individual programs and faculty interests new opportunities for the enrichment of students, as well as interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary study,” he said.

He explained that the liberal arts education benefits students both personally and professionally. “Your own life becomes enriched, and you learn through those interactions,” he said. “But also, one of the things that industrial leaders will tell you is that they are not interested in simply the person who has the technical or research skills. They want the person with entrepreneurial and communication skills.”

El-Fawal’s focus for the School of Sciences and Engineering is finding a path for interdisciplinary collaboration for both students and faculty members and to create a pipeline for communication, interaction and collaboration between students, researchers and departments within the school and with the other schools.

El-Fawal sees AUC as being equally competitive as institutions in the mainland United States, “we have regional expertise and researchers who are internationally respected in their fields, and I want to facilitate communication among them. Then we can translate what we have into something with global impact.”

Originally born in Egypt, El-Fawal grew up in the United States, but moved back to Egypt to finish high school and attend university. At the University of Alexandria, El-Fawal studied in the Faculty of Agriculture and had nearly completed his degree when he encountered a new academic interest, “even though I majored in entomology and pesticide chemistry, it was in my senior year that I took a course in toxicology and discovered a love for neuroscience and toxicology,” he recalled.

After graduating, El-Fawal returned to the United States and spent close to two years at Cornell University taking many courses in pharmacology, toxicology and neuroscience.

El-Fawal worked for a pharmaceutical company but he couldn’t ignore his interest in toxicology, which examines the harmful effects of chemicals on living organisms, and pharmacology, which looks at the therapeutic effects of drugs on living systems. So El-Fawal moved to Canada to attend the University of Guelph earning a master’s degree in biomedical sciences, specifically pharmacology and more specifically neuropharmacology and immune pharmacology. “So I developed not only a love of the nervous system, but also a love of the immune system, which reflects upon some of the work I currently do.”  

El-Fawal went on to do his PhD at Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Virginia Tech), examining neurodegenerative diseases, particularly those precipitated by environmental chemicals. After his PhD, he went to the New York University Medical Center Institute of Environmental Medicine and conducted research to understand how environmental factors can cause disease.

Because of the multidisciplinary nature of his research, El-Fawal has taught across a variety of topics over the years, including environmental ethics and biochemistry.

In 1994, he helped launch the first graduate program in Mercy College in New York University. In 1996, El-Fawal joined Mercy College full time as director of the Science and Technology Initiative, associate dean and then dean of Natural Sciences and Veterinary Technology and director of the Environmental Health and Safety Program.

El-Fawal was also the founding chair of the Department of Health Science as well as founding dean of the School of Health Science in Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Science. During his years at Albany, El-Fawal helped launch successful graduate programs in biotechnology, health outcomes research and informatics, and diagnostic sciences.

Today, El-Fawal hopes to build on the foundation that AUC has created as the top University in Egypt. “At AUC, we are an educational oasis,” El-Fawal observed. “One of the things an oasis provides you is not just a sanctuary, but a place to launch the next part of your journey. I see a great interest in environmental and health issues, so the questions that I will work with my colleagues in defining is, ‘What is our next trip? Where do we go from here?”

Psychological first aid is just one component of the broader mental health services integral to national health systems

Too often, people who suffer like this receive little or no immediate counselling. In situations of humanitarian crisis, it is because there are rarely any trained mental health professionals available.

However, it is perfectly possible to train first responders, such as police and fire officers, emergency health staff and humanitarian aid workers to provide “psychological first aid” to people in need. We have seen such examples in the Ebola outbreak in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, and the approach is also being offered widely in Syria and for thousands of displaced people in Greece, Nigeria and South Sudan.

Dubai, UAE; October 10, 2016: Following its successful debut in 2015, the region’s most anticipated horology event, Dubai Watch Week, returns for a second time under the Patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Latifa Bint Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice Chairman of Dubai Culture & Arts Authority. Organized by Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons, the second edition of the event will take place across two locations with an intensive program agenda for 2016.

Dubai Watch Week has education at the heart of its platform, through workshops, discussions, and mentorship opportunities that engage both existing and emerging members of the watch community in topics of both historical and contemporary significance.

The Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) will play host to the event once again, with the return of the very popular Watchmaking Master Class and the Horology Forum in addition to new programs that include the Horological Movement and the GPHG winning watches exhibition, and a new initiative called the Creative Hub– a platform that will foster creativity and showcase innovation and will be hosted by various brands.

The first of the artist Abdul Qader Al-Rai’s commissioned works is Zaman: ‘TIME’ A View from the First Ahmad Siddiqi and Sons Shop, Deira, Dubai, where the artist pays homage to the Seddiqi family’s first watch shop in Souk Bur Dubai, which opened in the late 1940s. Incorporating the spare parts of various timepieces taken from the Seddiqi atelier, the artist juxtaposes the softness of his watercolour technique with three-dimensional elements for the very first time. Welcoming this new addition to his canvases, the artist uses concepts of recycling and collage to accentuate the intricacy of these various watch elements. والعمل الأول الذي أنجزه عبد القادر الريّس بعنوان "زمان: نظرة من أول متجر لأحمد صدّيقي وأولاده، ديرة، دبي"، وهذا العمل بمثابة تحية لأول متجر لعائلة صدّيقي في سوق بر دبي في أواخر أربعينيات القرن العشرين. وفي هذا العمل يجمع الريّس قطع غيار لساعات مختلفة مأخوذة من مشغل «أحمد صدّيقي وأولاده» ثم يقارب بين ليونة وانسيابية الألوان المائية من جهة وعناصر ثلاثية الأبعاد في الجهة المقابلة في تجربة فنية غير مسبوقة. ويسخّر الريّس مفاهيم إعادة التدوير وفن الكولاج لإبراز تعقيد أجزاء الساعة المختلفة. وللمتجر المذكور خصوصية وجدانية في ذهن الريّس نفسه فمنه اشترى أول هدية قدّمها لزوجته في يوم زفافه، لذا يفيض هذا العمل باشتياق عميق للحظة مهمة في حياته.

وأما العمل الآخر فيحمل عنوان "زمان: ساعة رملية" ويتجاوز أيضاً مفهوم الزمن، إذ تستحضر هذه الساعة الرملية بظلال اللونين الأزرق والأصفر سطوة الزمن والذاكرة. وتستلهم ألوانها رمال دبي وجمال صحرائها، مثلما تستلهم خور دبي باعتباره شرياناً مائياً حيوياً ساهم في ازدهار الإمارة طوال العقود الماضية. وقد أبدع الريّس عملين أخاذين يحتفيان بمرور وتغيُّر الزمن. وهذه الشراكة مثالية بين عبد القادر الريّس و«أحمد صدّيقي وأولاده» فقد كان لمرور الزمن دورٌ في ثراء تجربتهما والمكانة التي حققاها عاماً تلو آخر.

DIFC Courts launches GCC’s first smart Small Claims Tribunal with support of Alpha Data

Turnkey project enables claimants to access justice from outside UAE

UAE, October 10, 2016 – DIFC Courts has collaborated with Alpha Data, one of the UAE’s leading systems integrators, to launch the GCC’s first smart Small Claims Tribunal. The pioneering ‘smart’ court is a turnkey project built on Microsoft infrastructure and works by providing both parties in dispute, as well as the judge, access to the case from remote locations on smartphones and computers.  

The newly introduced smart court is fully equipped with video conferencing technology that enables individuals or small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to participate in hearings from anywhere in the world.

Commenting on the launch, Amna Sultan Al Owais, Chief Operating Officer at DIFC Courts said: “The ‘smart court’ initiative is a major step towards DIFC Courts’ vision of becoming the world’s leading and most innovative commercial court by 2021, in addition to supporting Dubai’s bid to transform into a smart city. This development will also greatly increase confidence in Dubai as a progressive and world class centre for business.”

According to the current court procedures, the parties in dispute along with a judge have to be present at Small Claims Tribunal (SCT) during hearings. Via the new technology, however, all parties concerned, such as business owners who travel extensively; tenants who have departed from the UAE; and employees both in and out of Dubai with contract issues, can resolve their disputes by remotely attending their consultations and hearings.   

“Successfully overcoming the limitations of geographical boundaries, the GCC’s first ‘smart court’ has effectively strengthened DIFC Courts’ position as the region’s most innovative commercial court. Alpha Data has a key role to play in this significant development. Our collaboration involved the reconfiguration of the court room on a completely scalable technology platform in line with the Dispute Resolution Authority’s (DRA) roadmap and their compliance requirements. DIFC Courts created the GCC’s first Small Claims Tribunal in 2007, which has grown popular among the UAE’s SME sector. While it handles cases with a limit of up to AED 500,000, there is no ceiling on employment cases, provided parties agree to opt in. In the first half of 2016, the total value of claims increased from AED 7 million to AED 9 million year-on-year, indicating that claimants are responding to the new higher threshold for case values.

"محاكم دبي المالي" تطلق "المحكمة الذكيّة للدعاوى الصغيرة" الأولى من نوعها في الخليج العربي بدعم من "ألفا داتا"

مشروع متكامل لتمكين المتنازعين والقضاة من فض المنازعات عن بعد عبر الهواتف الذكية وأجهزة الكمبيوتر

الإمارات، 10 أكتوبر 2016 - احتفت "محاكم مركز دبي المالي العالمي"، في إطار التعاون مع "ألفا داتا" (Alpha Data)، الشركة الرائدة في مجال الأنظمة المتكاملة في دولة الإمارات، بإطلاق "المحكمة الذكيّة للدعاوى الصغيرة" في خطوة هي الأولى من نوعها في منطقة الخليج العربي. وتعد المحكمة الذكية مشروعاً متكاملاً يستند إلى بنية تحتية متطورة من "مايكروسوفت" (Microsoft)، في سبيل ضمان تمكين طرفي النزاع والقضاة من الوصول المباشر إلى تفاصيل القضية وفض المنازعات من أي مكان في العالم عبر الهواتف الذكية وأجهزة الكمبيوتر.

وتتسم "المحكمة الذكيّة للدعاوى الصغيرة" بالجاهزية التامة، كونها مزودة بـ "تقنية مؤتمرات الفيديو" التي تتيح للأفراد أو الشركات الصغيرة والمتوسطة إمكانية المشاركة في جلسات الاستماع من أي مكان في العالم.

وتحتم الإجراءت الحالية المتبعة لدى المحاكم على طرفي النزاع والقضاة الحضور إلى "محكمة الدعاوى الصغيرة" لحضور جلسات الاستماع. وتأتي التقنية الجديدة، المتمثلة بـ "المحكمة الذكيّة للدعاوى الصغيرة"، لتمكن كافة الأطراف المعنية، بمن فيهم أصحاب الأعمال أو المستأجرين أو الموظفين المتواجدين داخل أو خارج الدولة، من حل النزاعات عن بعد وحضور جلسات الاستماع والتشاور من أي مكان في العالم.

من جهته، قال موروغيسان فايثيلينغم ، مدير الخدمات في شركة "ألفا داتا": "يأتي إطلاق "المحكمة الذكية" الأولى في دول الخليج العربي لتعزز مكانة "محاكم مركز دبي المالي العالمي" باعتبارها المحكمة الأكثر ابتكاراً على المستوى الإقليمي، لا سيّما وأنها السباقة في تذليل العقبات وإلغاء القيود المفروضة على حل النزاعات القضائية نتيجة العوائق الجغرافية. ومما لا شك فيه بأننا سنقوم بدور مؤثر في تحقيق الأهداف المرجوة من هذه المبادرة السباقة، التي تعد نقلة نوعية على صعيد تسهيل التقاضي باستخدام أحدث الابتكارات التكنولوجية في العالم. ويشرّفنا التعاون مع "محاكم مركز دبي المالي العالمي" لإنجاح هذا المشروع الحيوي الذي شاركنا من خلاله في إعادة تشكيل قاعة المحكمة على منصة تكنولوجية قابلة للتحديث والتطوير، انسجاماً مع خارطة الطريق المحددة من قبل "سلطة تسوية المنازعات" (DRA) ومتطلبات الامتثال المعتمدة لديها. وقمنا أيضاً بالإشراف على كامل عملية التحول المطلوبة لإعادة التشكيل، والتي نجحنا في إتمامها خلال فترة زمنية قصيرة دون التأثير بأي شكل من الأشكال على المستخدمين. ونتطلع إلى الدخول مستقبلاً في المزيد من الشراكات الناجحة المماثلة، لنتمكن من توفير الدعم التكنولوجي لتنفيذ مبادرات رائدة تدعم مسيرة التحول الذكي في إمارة دبي ودولة الإمارات."

وابتكرت "محاكم مركز دبي المالي العالمي" أول محكمة للدعاوى الصغيرة في منطقة الخليج العربي في العام 2007، لتصبح بذلك الوجهة القضائية الرئيسة لحل منازعات قطاع الشركات الصغيرة والمتوسطة في دولة الإمارات. وتُعنى المحكمة بحل المنازعات التي لا تتجاوز قيمة المطالبة فيها حد 500,000 درهم إماراتي، مع عدم وجود أي حد لقضايا التوظيف. وتفيد الإحصائيات بأنّ القيمة الإجمالية للمطالبات ارتفعت من 7 إلى 9 مليون درهم إماراتي خلال النصف الأول من العام الجاري مقارنة بالفترة ذاتها من العام الماضي، ما يشير إلى تجاوب المدعين مع العتبة الجديدة لقيمة القضايا.
