AUC OFFERS NEW SCHOLARSHIPS TO EGYPTIAN AND INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

October 29, 2019, Cairo – The American University in Cairo (AUC) is offering new scholarships this year to Egyptian and International students. With more than 500 students on scholarships at AUC, 64 new scholars started studying at AUC this fall. The new scholarships benefit a broad range of students, from students with disabilities as well as international and public school students to those seeking to study abroad.

Samaa Abdelhamid, a freshman majoring in political science, said her life changed when she found out she’d be attending AUC. For her, receiving the Dr. Hamza Alkholi Public School Scholarship not only gave her the opportunity to study at the University, but it meant she’d be one step closer to achieving her dream of working toward more accessible education in Egypt.

“[Alkholi] doesn't even know me, but he allowed me to have an amazing education” she said. “This motivates me to eventually provide high-quality education to children in rural and local communities and to create an environment that will give them opportunities.”

The Dr. Hamza Alkholi Public School Scholarship is one of 12 new scholarships offered at AUC this year.

The Attijariwafa Bank Public School Scholarship for Students with Disabilities supports one public school graduate with a physical or learning disability who has demonstrated exceptional academic achievement and leadership.




Likewise, two visually impaired students this semester are supported by the Kaderoun Scholarship, offered by Misr Al-Kheir Foundation in partnership with the Sawiris Foundation for Social Development, providing full financial support for students with “kinetic-audio-visual” disabilities. The scholarship aims at integrating students into University life and providing them with special educational opportunities that enable them to have quality education and better job opportunities.

“The best thing you can do with your money is invest it in education because education is timeless,” said Manar Kheir, a freshman studying journalism and mass communication and a Kaderoun scholar. “I’m excited to eventually work on AUC TV, and in the future, I want to use my voice to make change in society.”

Mahmoud Ismail, also a Kaderoun scholar and an English major, said he appreciates AUC’s organization and the kindness of his professors and classmates. “Thank you to everyone who tries to support young people who want to achieve their goals in life,” he said.

Additionally, Egyptian and international students demonstrating outstanding academic standings and financial need may receive full or partial funding through the AUC Centennial Endowed Scholarship Fund.

“The Centennial Endowed Scholarship Fund is helping me complete my academic dreams and is motivating me to study more to get better grades to maintain it over the next few years,” said freshman Farah Awad.

To promote studies in the liberal arts and build on AUC's efforts of internationalization, the new AUC Liberal Arts Undergraduate Scholarship offers partial and full support to students from Egypt, the region and the United States studying humanities or the social sciences.

Some scholarships fund studies in specific AUC schools. Those hoping to pursue a Master of Global Affairs can apply for the Qalaa Holdings Partial Support Fellowship, while the Nevine Loutfy Scholarship partially supports the studies of students concentrating in finance in the School of Business.

Other scholarships for Egyptian students include the Egyptian Refining Company Public School Scholarship, which supports financially underprivileged students who graduated from public schools in Matareya, Khosos or Shark Shubra El Kheima (Mostorod), and the Al Ghurair STEM Scholarship. Both scholarships welcomed their fourth cohort of students this fall.




Several scholarships are geared toward international students. The Hadhramout Foundation Scholarships for Yemeni Undergraduate and Graduate Students will support academically outstanding Yemeni students pursuing any major or graduate program at AUC. For U.S. students, the David Bonderman (CASA '69) Travel and Learning Endowed Fund will pay for their undergraduate, graduate or study-abroad studies at AUC. Additionally, the Pangburn, Ellis, LaBarge Study-Abroad Fund fiances one semester of study at AUC for U.S. students. The new scholarships don’t just encourage international students to come to AUC, but also aim to support AUC students in studying outside of Egypt, such as the Nancy and Jonathan Wolf Study Abroad Scholarship for students wishing to study at the University of Central Florida in the United States.

International graduate students studying Egyptology can apply for The Bernard and Lisa Selz Endowed Fellowship in Egyptology, which is also open for Egyptian students.

South Sudan and Egypt sign Landmark Cooperation Agreement at South Sudan Oil & Power 2019

The country will launch its first ever licensing agreement in the first quarter of 2020 regarding 13 blocks onshore open for tender


JUBA, South Sudan, October 29, 2019/ -- South Sudan and Egypt sign a Memorandum of Understanding regarding cooperation in the field of downstream oil and gas, during the 2019 South Sudan Oil & Power Conference; the country will launch its first ever licensing agreement in the first quarter of 2020 regarding 13 blocks onshore open for tender; with opening keynotes from H.E. First Vice-President Taban Deng Gai and H.E. Awow Daniel Chuang, Minister of Petroleum, at the annual conference focused on finance and investment.

As a testimony to South Sudan’s growing attractiveness as an investment destination, South Sudan Oil & Power (SSOP) 2019 was host to delegations and officials from Kenya, Ethiopia, Egypt, Somalia, Norway, United States and South Africa.

During his opening keynote, H.E. Minister of Petroleum of South Sudan, Daniel Awow Chuang, expressed the country’s vision in the oil and gas sector, amid increased production numbers: “The oil production in South Sudan has reached 178 000 barrels per day. We hope to reach 250 000 barrels per day in the near future. We are successfully reaching target thanks to extensive support from our partners and neighboring countries”. Minister Chuang emphasized on the importance of its cooperation with Sudan, with whom a historic peace agreement was signed last September.

Several initiatives were highlighted by H.E. Chuang as well as H.E. First Vice President of South Sudan, Taban Deng Gai, showing the country’s efforts to significantly increase oil production. Last week, Sudd Petroleum Operating Company announced it would resume oil production at the end of the year. With a capacity of 80,000 barrels per day, the oilfields have been shut down since 2016.

South Africa’s Strategic Fuel Fund, which signed an exploration and production sharing agreement in May 2019, announced it would launch an aerial surveying campaign of its block B2 in December.

SSOP 2019 saw the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the South Sudanese government and Egypt’s state oil company Egyptian National Petroleum Corporation (EGPC) regarding regional cooperation in the field of downstream oil and gas. This comes a few weeks after Egyptian President Al-Sisi called upon Egyptian exploration and production companies to increase participation in African countries and urged service companies to invest in South Sudan. Egypt boasted a strong participation at the event, with several companies and delegations present including the EGPC, Petrojet, Petrogas, Al Khorayef, Drexel Oilfied Equipment, among others.

South Sudan announced it would launch its first ever licensing round in the first quarter of 2020, putting up 13 onshore blocks for tender. Numerous international exploration and production companies have already demonstrated their interest in South Sudan’s oil and gas potential.

تُعدّ "ستيلا مكارتني" أول مصممة أزياء تستخدم فرو كوبا (KOBA) الصناعي المستدام الأول من نوعه في العالم، والذي يتميز بصناعته من المكوّنات النباتية بالكامل. ويأتي قرار ستيلا مكارتني انسجاماً مع التزامها الكامل في عملية الرفق بالحيوانات، وعدم استخدام جلودها وفرائها في تصميم الأزياء، حيث تعمل المصممة بشكل متواصل على دفع حدود الاستدامة من خلال استخدام الفرو الصناعي كخيار مثالي للزبائن وفرصة حقيقية لإنقاذ قوقب الأرض. 

وتمت صناعة الفرو الصناعي (KOBA) الذي تنتجه شركة (ECOPEL) من مادة البوليستر المعاد تدويره وما يصل إلى 100% من ألياف "دوبونت سورونا" (DuPont Sorona) النباتية، الأمر الذي أنتج أول فرو صناعي من مكونات حيوية متوفر على نحو تجاري. ويمكن إعادة تدوير هذا الفرو الجديد بعد انقضاء عمره المديد، ما يساعد على ضمان عدم نفاذه، وهو الأمر الذي تشعر ستيلا بشغف شديد تجاه في ظل مساعيها نحو الاستدامة. ويعني اعتماد مادة "سورونا" على مكونات نباتية بنسبة 37% أنها تستهلك طاقة أقل بما يصل إلى 30% وتنتج غازات دفيئة أقل بنسبة 63% مقارنة بالمواد الصناعية التقليدية. 

وقالت مكارتني: "أنا في غاية الشوق لاستخدام هذا الفرو الصناعي الصديق للبيئة في منتجاتي، كونه يشكل خطوة كبيرة أخرى نحو مستقبل الأزياء المستدامة والتي لا يتم فيها استخدام فرو الحيوانات." 

ويتألف فرو (KOBA) من ألياف البوليمر "دوبونت سورونا" بنسبة 100% لتوفير بديل ناعم ومتعدد الاستخدامات وطويل الأمد لفرو الحيوانات، وليكون أول فرو صناعي منتج على نحو تجاري يتم فيه استخدام مكونات حيوية.

Dubai International Financial Centre Records a 45% Rise in Islamic Assets, Marking Significant Year-on-Year Growth

Over 40 financial firms based in the Centre providing Sharia-compliant products and solutions



Dubai, UAE, 16 October 2019: Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), the leading international financial hub in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia (MEASA) region, and the number eight global financial centre, has marked a significant rise in Islamic assets being managed in the Centre, recording a 45% growth between Q2 2018 and Q2 2019.


Islamic finance is growing at 1.5 times the rate of traditional finance, and the MEASA continues to be a steady driver of this industry, fueled by a number of jumbo sukuk issuances and almost US$ 1 trillion in financial assets across GCC countries. Dubai remains one of the world’s largest centres for Sukuk listings by value at US$ 62 billion, with DIFC-based Nasdaq Dubai at US$ 60 billion.


The DIFC continues to be a catalyst for growth in this sector, with more than 40 firms offering sharia-compliant products and services, using the Centre as a springboard to reach a muslim population of over 600 million in the Middle East and Africa region alone. Hakbah, an Islamic FinTech startup specialised in cooperative savings and Wethaq, a platform focused on structuring and distribution of securities in sukuk capital markets. As part of the programme, the budding start-ups receive guidance and mentorship from leading Islamic institutions such as the Dubai Islamic Economy Development Centre, Emirates Islamic Bank, Dubai Islamic Bank and Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank, amongst others from FinTech Hive’s network of 22 partners.

أكثر من 40 شركة مالية في المركز تقدم منتجات وحلول متوافقة مع الشريعة 

مركز دبي المالي العالمي يسجل نمواً في الأصول المالية الإسلامية بنسبة 45% سنوياً 

دبي، الإمارات العربية المتحدة، 16 أكتوبر 2019: سجّل مركز دبي المالي العالمي، المركز المالي الرائد في منطقة الشرق الأوسط وإفريقيا وجنوب آسيا، وثامن أفضل مركز مالي على الصعيد العالمي، نمواً ملموساً في حجم الأصول المالية الإسلامية المُدارة في المركز، بنسبة بلغت 45% خلال الفترة بين الربع الثاني 2019 والربع الثاني من عام 2018. 

ويمتاز قطاع التمويل الإسلامي بسرعة نمو أكبر بـ 1.5 مرة من سرعة نمو التمويل التقليدي، في وقت تتصدر خلاله منطقة الشرق الأوسط وإفريقيا وجنوب آسيا النمو على مستوى القطاع، حيث وصل حجم الأصول المالية في دول مجلس التعاون الخليجي إلى ما يقارب تريليون دولار أمريكي، بالإضافة إلى الأعداد الكبيرة للصكوك الإسلامية المصدرة، فيما تبقى دبي واحدة من أكبر المراكز العالمية لإدراج الصكوك بقيمة تعادل 62 مليار دولار أمريكي، حيث تدير بورصة "ناسداك دبي" في مركز دبي المالي العالمي نحو 60 مليار دولار أمريكي منها. 

ويضطلع مركز دبي المالي العالمي بدوره كوسيط في نمو القطاع من خلال 40 شركة في المركز تقدم منتجات وحلول متوافقة مع أحكام الشريعة الإسلامية، حيث يوفر المركز المالي فرصة الوصول إلى ما يزيد عن 600 مليون شخص في منطقة الشرق الأوسط وإفريقيا وحدها، فضلاً عن استقطابه كبرى المؤسسات المالية الإسلامية، مثل "ماي بنك إسلاميك برهاد"، التي أنشأت مقراتها الإقليمية في دبي، بالنظر إلى البيئة التشريعية والتنظيمية المتميزة، والمنظومة المالية النشطة والمتطورة. 

وفي هذا السياق، قال عارف أميري، الرئيس التنفيذي لسلطة مركز دبي المالي العالمي: "إن تزايد عدد المؤسسات المالية التي تقدم خدمات متوافقة مع أحكام الشريعة، وارتفاع حجم الأصول الإسلامية المُدارة من مركز دبي المالي العالمي يؤكد على الطلب المتنامي على المنتجات المالية الإسلامية في المنطقة. وتماشياً مع رؤية القيادة في دبي والهادفة إلى ترسيخ مكانتها كعاصمة للاقتصاد الإسلامي، فإننا ملتزمون بمواصلة تطوير البيئة الاستثمارية وفق أعلى المستويات العالمية، لدعم نمو المعاملات المتوافقة مع أحكام الشريعة في المركز." 

وساهم مركز دبي المالي العالمي بمكانته كوجهة جاذبة للشركات الناشئة المتخصصة في التكنولوجيا المالية الإسلامية، لترسخ مكانة دولة الإمارات التي تعدّ رابع أكبر مركز للتكنولوجيا المالية الإسلامية في العالم. وسلّط المركز المالي الضوء على التزامه تجاه تطوير القطاع من خلال إطلاق برنامج "فينتك هايف" لتسريع الأعمال والحائز على عدة جوائز، إلى جانب التكنولوجيا التنظيمية وتكنولوجيا التأمين والتكنولوجيا المالية. 

وكان قد تم اختيار 31 شركة لتشارك في المجموعة الثالثة من البرنامج، من بينهم أربع شركات مختصة بقطاع التكنولوجيا المالية الإسلامية تضم "هيلو جولد"، أول تطبيق لتجارة الذهب عبر الهواتف المحمولة ومتوافق مع أحكام الشريعة الإسلامية في العالم ومقره في ماليزيا، و"إسلامي تشين"، الشركة الناشئة المبتكرة والتي تستخدم تقنية "بلوك تشين" لتمكين العطاء الخيري، و"هكبه"، الشركة الناشئة في قطاع التكنولوجيا المالية الإسلامية والمتخصصة في الادخار التعاوني، وشركة "وثاق" للتأمين التكافلي، المنصة الهادفة إلى إنشاء وتوزيع السندات المالية في أسواق الصكوك المالية. وفي إطار البرنامج، ستحصل الشركات الناشئة على الإرشاد والتوجيه من المؤسسات الإسلامية الرائدة، مثل مركز دبي لتطوير الاقتصاد الإسلامي ومصرف الإمارات الإسلامي وبنك دبي الإسلامي ومصرف أبوظبي الإسلامي، وغيرها من الشركات المدرجة ضمن شبكة "فينتك هايف" التي تضم 22 شريكاً. 

وجدير بالذكر أن هذه المبادرات أسهمت في ابتكار بيئة رائدة لازدهار الخدمات المالية الإسلامية، وترسيخ مكانة دبي كمركز للتمويل الإسلامي في المنطقة، لتغير بذلك مستقبل القطاع المالي.
