Medical Experts Suggest an Alarming Rise in Lung Cancer in Non-Smokers in the UAE

There are an estimated 150 cases of lung cancer per year in the UAE,around 40 – 50 percent of these cases are at an advanced mostly incurable stage

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, 9 December 2018: Smoking accounts for 80 to 90 percent of the causes of lung cancers, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, however lung cancer from new forms of smoking including Midwakh, second hand smoke, lifestyle factors and genetic disorders have recently been observed as a more recognisable risk factors causing the rise of lung cancer in the UAE.

“There’s been a misconception that only smoking causes lung cancer. However, it is to be noted that in addition to smoking, exposure to radon gas, air pollution and having a family history can increase the chance of lung cancer,” said Dr Humaid Al-Shamsi, A consultant medical Oncologist at Tawam Hospital, Al Ain and the president of the UAE Oncology society, who is extending his support in creating awareness about lung cancer caused by factors other than smoking for a campaign run by Takeda - a global, R&D-driven pharmaceutical company that is expanding its product offerings in oncology. Focusing its research efforts on oncology, the company is committed to bringing better health and a brighter future to patients by translating science into life-changing medicines.

According to Dr Alshamsi, having a parent or sibling who’s had lung cancer increases the risk twice as likely to develop the condition as those without any family history, and the risk is even higher if a relative was diagnosed at a young age. There are more than 140 -150 cases per year in UAE that represent lung cancer, and around 40 – 50 percent of these cases have reached an advanced stage, which is not curable.




In addition, there has been an increase in population of smoking in the last 20 years in the UAE. In contrast, the rate of smoking in the USA has declined for the first time by 60 percent compared with 1960 as per a study published few days ago.

“While lung cancer is more prevalent with the male population, there has been an increase in number of women who smoke hookah, increasing the chances of this life-threatening medical condition even with the female population,” added Dr Humaid Al-Shamsi.

Lung cancer is a malignant lung tumour characterised by uncontrolled cell growth in lung tissue with symptoms such as coughing, weight loss, and fatigue and chest pain. The two types of lung cancers are small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) and non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The NSCLC type accounts for almost 80 percent of the total lung cancers. The cure rates depend on the stage of cancer detection with rates varying by 55 percent for first stage to just 1 percent for stage four.




“While smoking is the primary cause of cancer, there are a good number of patients, around 15-20 percent who have no exposure to smoking and yet suffer from the medical condition. In an effort to ensure that such individuals have access to right treatment at the right time, Abu Dhabi and Al Ain have introduced a programme to screen heavy smokers over the age of 50, with a history of smoking for at least 10-15 years. They can qualify for CT scan of the chest to make sure there is no early cancer,” said Dr Humaid Al-Shamsi.

While the programme is dedicated for all individuals who are at a risk of lung cancer, healthcare professionals are currently working with the young population to reduce the chances of this serious medical condition.

هناك ما يقدر بنحو 150 حالة سرطان رئة سنوياً في دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة، ونحو 40 إلى 50% من هذه الحالات في مرحلة متقدمة من المرض 

أبوظبي، الإمارات العربية المتحدة، 9 ديسمبر 2018: وفقاً للوكالة الأمريكية لمراكز مكافحة الأمراض واتقائها، يمثل التدخين من 80% إلى 90% من أسباب الإصابة بسرطان الرئة، وعلى الرغم من ذلك فإن معدلات الإصابة بسرطان الرئة الناتج من الأشكال الجديدة للتدخين كالمدواخ والأرجيلة أو الشيشة والتدخين السلبي ونمط الحياة والاضطرابات الوراثية، أخذت في الازدياد وأصبحت عوامل خطر تسببت في ارتفاع الإصابة بالمرض في دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة.

وقال الدكتور حميد الشامسي، استشاري الأورام في مستشفى توام بالعين، ورئيس جمعية الامارات للأورام والذي يقود حملة التوعية بسرطان الرئة الناجم عن عوامل أخرى غير التدخين والتي أطلقتها "تاكيدا"، الشركة العالمية الرائدة في مجال البحث والتطوير: "هناك اعتقاد خاطئ بأن التدخين هو السبب الوحيد للإصابة بسرطان الرئة. ومع ذلك، تجدر الإشارة إلى أنه بالإضافة إلى التدخين وهو العامل الرئيسي لسرطان الرئة، يمكن أن يؤدي التعرض للتدخين السلبي ولغاز الرادون وتلوث الهواء وتاريخ العائلة، إلى زيادة فرص الإصابة بسرطان الرئة". 

ومع تركيز جهودها البحثية على علاج الأورام، تلتزم شركة "تاكيدا" بمستقبل أكثر إشراقاً للمرضى من خلال ترجمة العلوم والتجارب والأبحاث إلى أدوية قادرة على تغيير الحياة إلى الأفضل.

ووفقاً للدكتور الشامسي، فإن إصابة أحد الوالدين أو الأشقاء بسرطان الرئة يزيد من احتمالية مضاعفة خطر الإصابة لدى الفرد، ويكون الخطر أكبر إذا تم تشخيص أحد الأقارب في سن مبكرة. وهناك حوالي 150 حالة سنوياً مصابة بسرطان الرئة في دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة، وهناك نسبة ما بين 40 إلى 50% من هذه الحالات وصلت إلى مرحلة متقدمة، وغير قابلة للشفاء.

وفي أحدث الإحصائيات العلمية في الدولة، فقد حدثت زيادة في عدد المدخنين خلال العشرين سنة الماضية في الإمارات العربية المتحدة حيث أنه يقدر بحوالي 24% من الذكور من المدخنين و8% من الإناث مدخنات. وفي المقابل، فإن نسبة التدخين في الولايات المتحدة قد إنخفضت إلى أدنى مستوى بنسبة 60% مقارنة بعام 1960 حيث أنه 20% من الأمريكيين من المدخنين وذلك حسب دراسة نشرت قبل بضعة أيام.

وأضاف الدكتور حميد الشامسي: "في حين أن سرطان الرئة أكثر انتشارا بين الذكور، إلا أن هناك زيادة في عدد النساء اللواتي يدخن الشيشة، مما يزيد من فرص تطور سرطان الرئة الذي يهدد الحياة حتى بين الإناث داخل الدولة".

وسرطان الرئة هو سرطان رئوي خبيث يتميز بنمو غير منضبط للخلايا غير المتحكم بها في أنسجة الرئة مع أعراض مثل السعال وفقدان الوزن والتعب وألم في الصدر. وهناك نوعان من أنواع سرطان الرئة، هما سرطان الرئة ذو الخلايا الصغيرة (SCLC) وسرطان الرئة ذو الخلايا غير الصغيرة (NSCLC). ويمثل نوع NSCLC نحو 80٪ من إجمالي الإصابات بسرطان الرئة. وتعتمد معدلات الشفاء على مرحلة اكتشاف السرطان، وذلك بمعدلات متفاوتة بنسبة 55% للمرحلة الأولى إلى 1% فقط للمرحلة الرابعة.

وأضاف الدكتور حميد الشامسي: "في حين أن التدخين هو السبب الرئيسي للاصابة بسرطان الرئة ، هناك عدد كبير من المرضى تقدر نسبتهم ما بين 15 إلى 20٪ ممن لا يتعرضون للتدخين ويعانون من سرطان الرئة. وفي محاولة لضمان حصول هؤلاء الأفراد على العلاج المناسب في الوقت المناسب، أطلقت دائرة الصحة في أبوظبي برنامجاً لفحص المدخنين الذين يزيد عمرهم عن 50 عاماً، مع وجود تاريخ للتدخين لمدة 10إلى 15 سنة على الأقل. ويمكن أن يتأهل هؤلاء لإجراء التصوير المقطعي للصدر للتأكد من عدم وجود سرطان في مراحله المبكرة".

Dubai, United Arab Emirates, 09 December 2018, (AETOSWire): Blessed with an abundance of solar and wind resources, Iraq is now seeking to diversify its energy dependency away from fossil fuels within the next decade, and enhance the energy mix. The country is expected to supply over 10% of its energy needs by 2028 from sustainable resources, by opting to build large-scale Solar, Wind and Biomass facilities.



The war-torn country suffers from serious electricity shortage due to insufficient generating capacity and constantly increasing demand which is now outpacing capacity expansion. The ISIS aggression in June 2014 reduced the available generation capacity from 28,680 MW to about 24,020 MW. While demand is 17,000 MW, the output of electricity averaged less than 11,300 MW in 2017. Power supply availability is less than 15 hours/day from the public network. This has forced Iraqi citizens to rely on private diesel generators to fill the gap. Considering the current electricity demand growth rate of 6%, the country needs an additional capacity of 20,000 MW to serve demand of over 32,500 MW by 2028.




“To move towards a sustainable economy, Iraq’s electricity infrastructure requires significant investment in capacity expansion, efficiency improvements through retrofits, and renewables-based generation capacity. There is also a pressing need to repair and upgrade transmission lines and substations, to cut down on transmission and distribution losses. This kind of electricity development programme in Iraq requires over USD 50 billion of capital within 2018-2028, presenting significant opportunities for companies that supply to this industry” said Ali Mirmohammad, Sr. Consultant and Business Development Manager at Frost & Sullivan.

Iraq holds large reserves of natural gas that can be used for the development of combined-cycle gas turbine plants. Besides, an average irradiation of 5.6 kWh/m2/day with over 3000 hours of bright sunshine per year offers significant opportunities for development of solar energies across the country.




With great efforts, Iraq is on the path to end the practice of flaring gas from its southern oil-producing fields and is also expected to install more gas processing facilities to not only cut gas imports but also provide more feedstock to power generation plants from 2021 onwards. The country’s renewable and energy efficiency development programmes have now received strong support from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Regional Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE), besides the World Bank.




By 2028, Iraq is expected to have an installed capacity of over 5 GW of solar energy, about 1 GW of wind Energy and around 0.2 GW of Bioenergy. This would present great opportunities for private investors and technology providers to get involved in capacity expansions, upgrades and localisations, said Mirmohammad.




As far as the federal budget deficit is concerned, the government of Iraq is simply unable to self-fund the necessary investments in the renewable energy sector. To involve the private sectors and boost FDI, the government offers significant incentives and initiatives to investors in this sector. This includes tax holidays, customs incentives, investor-favourable tariffs, land rights and infrastructure, NIC support in obtaining permits and licenses, and some guarantees for eligible projects identified by the Ministry of Finance (MoF).




Wind energy in Iraq is still to be tapped. No significant activity has been carried out in this sector, in contrast to the focus solar energy has received from both government and private sectors in Iraq. However, the Kurdistan Regional Government is planning to augment its much needed electricity from wind and hydropower sources. The KRG ministry has proposed wind farm feasibility studies in all of its three northern Iraq provinces, apart from three hydropower feasibility studies. All the wind sites will be selected at Iraq's Dohuk, Erbil and Sulaimaniya provinces.




Use of Rooftop photovoltaics (PV) in Iraq among home and shop owners has increased significantly within the past two years especially in northern area of Iraq to smoothen power outages. “Iraq presents a strong potential for deployment of off-grid, and distributed solar PV solutions at a micro level. These solutions would present a valid replacement for the extensive deployment of diesel gensets that are currently being used all over the country” notes Abhay Bhargava, Frost & Sullivan’s Director for Industrial Practice, Middle East Africa region.

تطوير مصادر الطاقة المستدامة؛

العراق يخطو على طريق الاقتصاد الأخضر

سيكون تعزيز الاستدامة أحد المكونات الأساسية لجهود إعادة إعمار الاقتصاد العراقي، وفقاً لقسم ممارسات الطاقة في "فروست آند سوليفان"

دبي، الإمارات العربية المتحدة، 9 ديسمبر 2018، ("ايتوس واير"): تسعى دولة العراق التي تتمتّع بوفرةً من موارد الطاقة الشمسية وطاقة الرياح إلى تنويع اعتمادها في مجال الطاقة بعيداً عن الوقود الأحفوري خلال العقد المقبل، إضافةً إلى تعزيز مزيج الطاقة لديها. وبحلول 2028، يُتوقّع أنّ توفّر البلاد أكثر من 10 في المائة من احتياجاتها من الطاقة من مصادر مستدامة عبر اللجوء إلى بناء منشآت واسعة النطاق لتوليد الطاقة الشمسية وطاقة الرياح وتوليد الطاقة من الكتل الحيويّة.

ويُعاني هذا البلد الذي مزّقته الحرب من نقصٍ حادٍ في الكهرباء نظراً للطاقة الانتاجية غير الكافية لتوليد الكهرباء والارتفاع المتواصل للطلب الذي يتجاوز حالياً توسيع الطاقة الانتاجية. وأدّت هجمات تنظيم الدولة الإسلامية في العراق والشام عام 2014 إلى خفض الطاقة الإنتاجية المتاحة من 28,680 ميجاواط إلى نحو 24,020 ميجاواط. وفيما يبلغ الطلب 17,000 ميجاواط، وصل متوسّط إنتاج الكهرباء أقلّ من 11,300 ميجاواط عام 2017. وتبلغ فترة التزود بالكهرباء من الشبكة العامة أقلّ من 15 ساعة في اليوم. ونتيجةً لذلك، وجد المواطنون العراقيون أنفسهم مجبرين على الاعتماد على مولدات الديزل الخاصة لسدّ تلك الفجوة. وبالنظر إلى المعدل الحالي لنمو الطلب على الكهرباء والذي يبلغ 6 في المائة، ستحتاج البلاد إلى طاقة إنتاجية إضافية تبلغ 20,000 ميجاواط لتلبية الطلب الذي سيبلغ 32,500 ميجاواط بحلول عام 2028.

وفي إطار تعليقه على الموضوع قال السيّد علي ميرمحمد، كبير المستشارين ومدير تطوير الأعمال لدى "فروست آند سوليفان": "بغرض المضي نحو اقتصاد مستدام، تتطلّب البنية التحتية للطاقة الكهربائية في العراق استثمارات ضخمة في توسيع الطاقة الإنتاجية، وتحسينات في الكفاءة من خلال التحديثات، والطاقة الإنتاجية القائمة على الطاقات المتجددة. وهناك حاجةٌ ملحّة لإصلاح وتطوير خطوط النقل والمحطات الفرعية للحدّ من هدر الطاقة خلال عمليات النقل والتوزيع. ويتطلّب هذا النوع من البرامج التطويرية لقطاع الطاقة الكهربائية في العراق رأس مال يتجاوز 50 مليار دولار أمريكي في الفترة ما بين 2018-2028، ما يمثّل فرصاً هائلة أمام شركات التوريد في هذا القطاع".

ويمتلك العراق احتياطات كبيرة من الغاز الطبيعي الذي يمكن استخدامه لتطوير محطات توليد توربينية عاملة بالغاز ذات دورة مركبة. وبالإضافة إلى ذلك، يوفّر متوسّط التعرض لأشعة الشمس والذي يبلغ 5.6 كيلوواط ساعي في المتر المربع باليوم و3000 ساعة من أشعة الشمس الساطعة في العام فرصاً كبيرة لتطوير قطاع الطاقة الشمسية في البلاد.

وبفضل الجهود الجبارة التي تُبذل، بات العراق على المسار الصحيح لإنهاء ممارسات حرق الغاز من الحقول الجنوبية لإنتاج النفط، كما يُتوقّع تركيب المزيد من محطات معالجة الغاز للحدّ من الاستيراد وتوفير المواد الأولية لتغذية محطات توليد الطاقة ابتداء من عام 2021. ويتلقّى برنامج تطوير الطاقات المتجددة وكفاءة الطاقة في البلاد دعماً قوياً من قبل الوكالة الدولية للطاقة المتجددة، وبرنامج الأمم المتحدة الإنمائي، والمركز الإقليمي للطاقة المتجددة وكفاءة الطاقة، إضافةً إلى البنك الدولي.

وأضاف السيّد ميرمحمد قائلاً بأنّه وبحلول عام 2028، يُتوقّع أنّ يُشيّد العراق محطات توليد طاقة بسعة تتجاوز 5 جيجاواط من الطاقة الشمسية، ونحو 1 جيجاواط من طاقة الرياح، ونحو 0.2 جيجاواط من طاقة الكتل الحيوية. الأمر الذي يوفّر فرصاً هائلة أمام المستثمرين من القطاع الخاص ومزودي التكنولوجيا للمشاركة في زيادة السعة الإنتاجية، وعمليات التطوير والتخصيص للاستخدام المحلي.

ونظراً للعجز في الميزانية الاتحادية، فإنّ حكومة العراق غير قادرة ببساطة على تمويل الاستثمارات اللازمة في مجال الطاقات المتجددة بشكل ذاتي. وبغرض إشراك القطاع الخاص وتعزيز الاستثمارات الأجنبية المباشرة، تُوفّر حكومة العراق محفّزات ومبادرات هامّة للمستثمرين في هذا القطاع. ويتضمن ذلك، إعفاءات ضريبية ومحفّزات جمركية وتعرفات مناسبة للمستثمرين وحقوق في الأراضي والبنى التحتية ودعماً غير مرتبط بالعقود للحصول على التصريحات والرخص، وبعض الضمانات للمشاريع المؤهلة المحددة من قبل وزارة المالية. 

ولا تزال إمكانات طاقة الرياح في العراق بحاجة إلى استغلالها. فلم يتمّ حتى الآن إجراء أيّ أنشطة هامة في هذا القطاع، على عكس التركيز القائم على قطاع الطاقة الشمسية من قبل الحكومة والقطاع الخاص في العراق. وعلى الرغم من ذلك، تُخطط حكومة إقليم كردستان إلى توفير احتجاجاتها الكهربائية من مصادر طاقة الرياح والطاقة المائية. واقترح مجلس الوزراء في حكومة إقليم كردستان دراسات جدوى لمزارع الرياح في جميع محافظاتها الشمالية الثلاث في العراق، إضافةً إلى ثلاث دراسات جدوى للطاقة المائية. وسيتم اختيار جميع مواقع مزارع الرياح في محافظات دهوك وأربيل والسليمانية في العراق.

وازداد استخدام ألواح الطاقة الشمسية على الأسطح في العرق من قبل أصحاب المنازل والمتاجر بشكل كبير خلال العامين الماضيين خاصةً في شمال العراق للتخفيف من آثار انقطاع التيار الكهربائي. وقال أبهاي بهارجافا، رئيس الأعمال لشؤون الممارسات الصناعية في "فروست آند سوليفان": "يوفّر العراق إمكانات كبيرة لتطوير حلول ألواح الطاقة الشمسية الموزّعة والتي تعمل خارج نطاق الشبكة على نطاق صغير. ويمكن أنّ تمثّل هذه الحلول بديلاً للاستخدام المكثّف لمولدات الديزل التي تستخدم حالياً في جميع أنحاء البلاد".
