WinGD advances the MENA maritime sector with innovative engine technology

The company establishes its strong presence in the MENA market with innovative and efficient

solutions

Dubai – United Arab Emirates –28th of November 2018: Winterthur Gas & Diesel (WinGD), a

Chinese-owned and Switzerland-based engine manufacturer successfully emerges as leader in

the MENA region with their focus on smart shipping and innovative services. In its pursuit to

developing sustainable technology for tracking future emission regulations for environmental

upkeep, WinGD continues to reinforce the importance of LNG as a fuel for the future in addition

to providing efficient services while reducing costs and improving performance.

The company is not new in the diesel engine industry, as reflected by its 125 year history. After

its inception as Sulzer Corporation in 1893, the company merged into Wärtsilä Corporation in

1997, before eventually merging with China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) and being

rebranded to WinGD in 2015.

Adoption of low-pressure gas technology by the marine industry has enabled WinDG to carve a

niche for themselves, establishing themselves as the leading developers of low-pressure dual-fuel

technology for low-speed gas and diesel engines for marine propulsion.

Eng.Ibrahim Behairy, Managing Director at WinGD MENA, commented, “Our passion for

sustainability and innovation fuels our quest for success in the region. Being in the engine design

business for over a century, at WinGD our technology continues to evolve as we pursue greener

fuel choices, improved efficiencies and reduced operating costs.”

“Keeping track of future emissions regulations in the region, it is imperative that alternate fuel

resources be found and utilized. In order to keep relevant and vital, most of our R&D efforts are

focused on finding climate friendly solutions, while catering to ship designs and operator

requirements,” Behairy added.

Reinforcing a future of smart shipping

In keeping with ever-changing emission legislations, WinGD practices low-pressure gas

admissions, manufacturing revolutionary low-pressure, dual-fuel X-DF engines, Generation X

engines, and RT-flex diesel engines, which have caused a breakthrough in the marine market.

The Original Engine Manufacturer (OEM) currently supports a multitude of vessel types

including tankers, container vessels, bulk carriers, cargo vessels and gas carriers, demonstrating a

standard to set new market trends by providing built-in flexibility that allow shipyards and ship-

owners the ability to adapt engine performance and specifically meet their operational

requirements.

Furthermore, the company recognizes that new data is invaluable. That is why it is creating new

opportunities to utilize digital technologies for better ship operations, providing ship owners with

complete information on how to manage their fleet in an optimized way.

Behairy emphasized, “Smart shipping is not an isolated process. It is actually a combination of

innovative thinking, technologies and processes amalgamated together with the human element.

It is primarily about driving innovation and creating greater value for customers.”

The success of the Switzerland originating company has been steady, with business flourishing

via multiple dealings. Arab Maritime Petroleum Transport Company (AMPTC) is one of the

companies contributing to WinGD’s success, as they purchased six Swiss Max Oil Tanker

Engines in late 2016, while WinGD and Kuwait Oil Tanker Company (KOTC) also came to an

agreement for the transfer of three VLPG vessels in 2017. The biggest haul came courtesy of a

2017 partnership with Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines Group (IRISL), involving four

Panamax Containers and six Medium Range Tankers.

Aspiring to position the company for transcendent success, Behairy has approached the task by

growing operations upon pre-established successful foundations. In regards to the outlook of the

company, he stated, “We are an old company with a new name. Since we are not new in the

market, our clients are well established in the region. Capitalizing on the strength of previously

formed relationships with our already established client base will continue to propel WinGD

forward.”

AUC HOLDS MEMORIAL IN HONOR OF GALAL AMIN’S LIFE AND LEGACY

November 25, 2018, Cairo – The American University in Cairo (AUC) held a memorial service to honor the life and legacy of Professor Emeritus Galal Amin. Family, friends, faculty and students of the late professor gathered the University to share stories about his life and accomplishments, and to share some words about his impact on their lives. Besides teaching in AUC’s Department of Economics for 44 years, Amin was also an award-winning economist, prominent writer and commentator, and AUC Press author. However, to those who got the opportunity to meet him, he was more than just a distinguished academic and encyclopedic thinker. He was a mentor, an advocate for Egypt and, most importantly, an inspiration.

Nabil Elaraby, chairman of the Board of Trustees for Cairo Regional Centre for International Commercial Arbitration and former secretary-general of the League of Arab States, talked about how Amin went above and beyond as a teacher and as an economist. “Galal was a visionary professor of economics,” Elaraby said. “My three children were at one point his students, and they benefited greatly -- not only from his teaching, but from the way he looked at life.”

“He could make even perennially dry subjects like microeconomics exciting,” laughed Mona Said ’89, ’91, associate professor and chair of AUC’s Department of Economics. As dedicated as he was to AUC, Said believes that Amin embodied the vision of AUC’s Department of Economics –– to be a hub of inspirational teaching and creative research with regional expertise and global impact. “Given who he was and what he meant to all of us, we could have simply stated that our vision was carried on by the legacy of Galal Amin,” shared Said.

“He gave sufficient weight to qualitative areas, including the impact of economics on ordinary people, the impact of economics on quality of life and the impact of economics on communities at large,” said Walid Abdelnasser, director of the Regional Bureau for Arab countries, World Intellectual Property Organization, describing how Amin stood out within his field.

Amin was well known at the University for being incredibly popular with students and offering a unique class experience. “There was no PowerPoint, no screen and no computer. It was just Dr. Galal, a board, a marker and us,” described Yasmine Kamar '11, business director at KAPO Group and one of Amin’s former students. “I’m very blessed to have gotten to take part in that class. I was encouraged to minor in economics, and I took three or four classes of the whole minor with him.”

According to Danya Amin, Galal Amin’s daughter, this sort of support and encouragement was nothing out of the ordinary. “He never made me feel bad about myself,” said reflected. “He never told me what to do, and he never said I told you so.”

At times heartwarming, at times heartbreaking, the memorial service was a testament to how Amin was an inspiration to his students, friends and Egypt at large. “Some people count themselves lucky or honored to have been in one of his classes or to have been one of his colleagues. How honored am I to have had him by my side for half a century?” said Danya Amin tearfully.

Amin received an LLB from the Faculty of Law, Cairo University in 1955, and an MSc and PhD from the London School of Economics in 1961 and 1964, respectively. Prior to joining AUC in 1979, he was a visiting professor of economics at Ain Shams University and the University of California, Los Angeles, and was economic adviser to the Kuwait Fund for Economic Development. Amin was awarded the Sultan Qaboos Awards for Culture, Arts and Literature in 2017, the State Appreciation Award in Social Sciences in 2013 and the Sultan Bin Al Owais Cultural Foundation Award in recognition of his contributions to economics, politics, community and culture in 2010. He was also the recipient of the Award for Economics from the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Science; the Order of Merit for the Sciences and Arts from the President of Egypt; and the Egyptian State Prize for Economics.
