قامت دار الساعات اليابانية "سيتيزن" وفي إطار الاحتفال بمرور 100 عام على التأسيس بالكشف عن إصدارات جديدة مؤخرا، خلال معرض الساعات والمجوهرات السويسري "بازل وورلد 2018".

تتضمن التشكيلة المحدودة تسعة إصدارات، كلها تحتوي على تقنية إيكو درايف التي تعمل بالضوء، والتي طورتها سيتيزن على مدى 40 عاما. كما تحتوي إصدارات فردية على تقنيات سيتيزن حصرية أخرى مثل سوبر تيتانيوم، ديوراتكت، تقنية التحكم بالموجات اللاسلكية وضبط الوقت بأقمار جي بي إس GPS الاصطناعية. 

تأتي كل الإصدارات بحلقة ميناء ذهبية وسوداء تعبر عن فكرة التشكيلة وهي "اللحظة التي يتحول فيها الضوء إلى وقت"، كما ترمز إلى إيكو درايف.

20TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE L’ORÉAL-UNESCO FOR WOMEN IN SCIENCE PROGRAMME HONOURS SOUTH AFRICAN SCIENTISTS

Paris, 23 March 2018 – The L’Oréal Foundation and UNESCO honor five exceptional female scientists and 15 young scientists with the 2018 L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Awards




Women continue to be under-represented in public and professional life particularly in science where the glass ceiling is still a reality. Today only 28% of scientists are women of which only 3% have been awarded Nobel Prizes for Science since the awards began in 1901.




Despite this there are many eminent women scientists and raising their profile is vital to promoting greater gender equality in science. Annually for the past 20 years, the L’Oréal Foundation has recognized five exceptional female scientists and fifteen promising scientists in partnership with UNESCO and taken the initiative to improve the balance of women and men in science.




THE 2018 LAUREATES: EXCEPTIONAL WOMEN IN SCIENCE




Each laureate will receive a prize of €100,000 and honored for her contribution in the fields of medicine, paleontology, molecular biology, ecology and developmental biology. Professor Heather Zar from the University of Cape Town and Red Cross Children’s Hospital has been honoured for establishing a cutting-edge research program on pneumonia, tuberculosis and asthma, saving the lives of many children worldwide.





“In contrast to the aging populations of wealthy, developed countries, in Africa, children make up almost 50% of the population. Too many of them succumb to diseases that could be prevented or treated. Pneumonia affects 36 million children across Africa each year and is fatal in more than 700,000 children globally with nearly 60% of these deaths occurring in Africa” explains Heather Zar.




The rate of tuberculosis infection on the continent is among the highest in the world, and asthma affects between 10 and 20% of children. Heather Zar has dedicated her career to improving the diagnosis and treatment of these common causes of childhood illness and mortality in her native South Africa, “I have always felt a strong commitment to work in areas where there is a real need,” she says.





In a continent where resources are in short supply, Professor Zar has adopted a pragmatic approach, focusing on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases with the greatest impact. She has developed simple tests to diagnose tuberculosis and pneumonia in children from spit and nasal swab samples, which have been integrated into global World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines. She demonstrated that preventative use of a common tuberculosis treatment, the antibiotic “isoniazid”, reduced mortality by 50% and tuberculosis incidence by 70% in HIV-infected children who were not undergoing antiretroviral therapy.





Heather Zar is committed to reducing health inequalities in the world. Her drive to become a scientist began the day her aunt and uncle brought her into their laboratory; her preoccupation with social justice came from her own parents. “Being a pediatrician and clinician-scientist combines my desire to advance knowledge with my need to improve children’s lives,” she reflects.




As part of the 20th anniversary celebrations, former award winners from across the world joined the move to support and empower female scientist who are addressing key issues. 2016 Laureate, Professor Quarraisha Abdool Karim who was previously honoured for her contribution to HIV/Aids prevention in young girls, was also in attendance. “It is spectacular to see the dedicated efforts and contributions women are making to societal transformation being showcased!” says Abdool Karim. “Notwithstanding, the programme now in its 20th year has demonstrated unequivocally the life changing cutting edge state of the art science that is both locally relevant and globally important being generated by women in all disciplines across the world.”

THE 2018 L’OREAL-UNESCO FOR WOMEN IN SCIENCE INTERNATIONAL RISING TALENTS



The L’Oréal Foundation and UNESCO have supported 3,022 talented young female scientists through research fellowships. These L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science fellowships are awarded annually at national and regional ceremonies held in 117 countries.




275 young women benefit from national and regional fellowships each year. Out of these 275, the International Rising Talents programme selects the 15 most promising scientists.




Danielle Twilley from the University of Pretoria received the International Rising Talent award for research in targeting angiogenesis for the treatment of melanoma. Skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in South Africa. Melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer with approximately 86% of melanoma cases attributed to sun exposure. She is seeking to find out whether a compound isolated from a South African plant, which she found in previous research to have significant cytotoxicity (the quality of being toxic to cells) towards melanoma cells, is able to inhibit both angiogenesis and tumor growth.




To minimize damage to healthy cells while delivering powerful doses to the tumor environment, she is developing the anti-angiogenic agent into gold nanoparticles to target the delivery to the tumor and its vascular network. Mrs. Twilley explores indigenous knowledge of plant-based medicines for application in skin cancer, finding one traditionally used plant with high antioxidant content that boosts the SPF of a sunscreen. She is highly engaged in product development, undertaking patenting processes that assure benefits to indigenous communities, planning clinical trials and dealing with manufacturers

NEW ACHIEVEMENT FOR AUC’S ACCOUNTING DEPARTMENT

March 25, 2018, Cairo – The Department of Accounting at The American University in Cairo (AUC) is now the first undergraduate accounting program in Egypt, Africa and the Middle East to receive the maximum exemption from the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) in the United Kingdom. This accreditation exempts students from nine out of the 14 courses – the maximum number of exemptions possible – required to sit for the ACCA exam and become a chartered certified accountant who can work all over the globe.



“The ACCA accreditation is very timely and is an indication of the quality of the accounting program at AUC,” said Khaled Samaha, professor and chair of the Department of Accounting. “Furthermore, it aligns AUC’s mission with that of the School of Business: internationalization.”



As a result of the ACCA accreditation, which applies for three years, AUC’s accounting students are only required to complete five courses outside of their undergraduate courses to become ACCA-certified. They are even able to begin the process of certification in their final undergraduate year, leaving them with about a year of studying left before they can take the ACCA exam.



In addition, the ACCA accreditation grants an extra perk that enables AUC accounting graduates to take remaining courses over a year with master’s students at the University of London. If they succeed at obtaining good grades in these courses and pass the ACCA exam, they end up with ACCA certification and the added bonus of a master’s degree from the University of London.



An accounting graduate, Selim Tarek '18, a teaching assistant who also minored in economics and graduated with high honors, sees how significant this accreditation is for current students. "The ACCA accreditation is very important for us because it gives accounting students the opportunity to be exempted from nine out of 14 courses," said Tarek. "So we graduate with an accounting degree and more than 60 percent of the ACCA certification done. Having the ACCA certification gives us the right to work as public auditors internationally and locally, after passing a local tax exam. The accreditation also means that AUC accounting exams are similar to ACCA exams, which means all problems are taken from real life. They are just as difficult as real life situations. These exams train students to be ready to work in accounting and the auditing field."



To become an auditor, individuals have to sit for professional certification exams. While Egypt has its own Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification, this exam is taken in Arabic, only allowing professionals to work as auditors within the country. To be certified internationally, individuals need to be CPA-certified in the United States or take the ACCA exam in the United Kingdom.



As part of the accreditation process, the Department of Accounting had to demonstrate that their program offers a level of education and content that matches the ACCA program.

“This will add a lot to the accounting program, especially as many students now want to declare as accounting majors,” said Samaha. “This will also have a good impact on Egypt’s market. We are doing the best we can. This is the maximum that an accounting program can get.”

ACCA ensures the prestige of the program by regularly reviewing university curricula, courses and exams and interviewing faculty before making a determination about accreditation. AUC’s accounting program was first granted eight exemptions in 2017, but was quickly granted nine exemptions based on updates by the end of the year. Though these updates are not typically retrospective, ACCA made an exception for AUC, deciding that accounting students who graduate on or after January 1, 2017 are exempted from nine modules of the certification program.

45 Epson display products now carry TCO Certified for sustainability

Epson projectors pass the sustainability test

Cairo – Egypt, 27 March 2018: Epson announced that 45 of its projector display products, that are designed to meet the needs of the educational and corporate sectors, have been certified according to the global, third-party sustainability certification TCO Certified. It is administered by TCO Development that is owned by a non-profit organization based in Sweden.


To be certified, products must meet life cycle criteria for social and environmental sustainability throughout the product life cycle: manufacturing, use and end-of-life. Criteria cover areas such as factory working conditions, reduction of hazardous substances, along with high image quality, energy efficiency during use and responsible end-of-life handling. Compliance with all criteria is independently verified, both before and after the certification process. This means that buyers can feel confident that the products they buy live up to all criteria throughout their usable life.

Epson Display Products and the environment




Epson display products have been designed to reduce a business’s environmental footprint and minimise power consumption both when projecting images and when idle. The technology includes an energy-efficient basic design and power-saving options on the ECO menu and, when the projector is idle, the Ultra-Low Brightness mode reduces power consumption when the unit is not projecting.




When projecting, the newly developed Light Optimiser function automatically adjusts lamp brightness based on the projected image. Power consumption is reduced by as much as 27% when projecting dark images and all Epson projectors are equipped with ECO mode which is designed to extend the life of the lamp and reduce power consumption by over a quarter during projection.




Electronics is widely recognized as a risk category for human rights violations during manufacture, which is almost impossible for buyers to assess themselves. Long used by IT purchasers for computer equipment, TCO Certified is an essential means for AV buyers to verify that the projectors they buy are manufactured under fair conditions. By specifying TCO Certified in purchasing contracts, they can also directly influence industry to improve their social and environmental responsibility track records.




Epson social responsibility in manufacturing




Epson manages its manufacturing processes in-house, making it easier to control working practices and promote high standards of social responsibility in the manufacturing process. Epson suppliers must also abide by the strict criteria of Epson’s ‘Code of Conduct’ and are checked on a regular basis and any necessary improvements must be implemented immediately.

Epson adheres to and exceeds standards established by the International Labour Organization (ILO), including prohibiting the use of child labour and ensuring a minimum employment age. Epson exceeds ILO standards by insisting on a minimum working age of eighteen years old (the ILO benchmark is sixteen) in all its factories and ensures that every employee has a contract with regulated working hours including overtime opportunities. Epson also pays well above average wages.




Epson has established and is working towards its Environmental Vision 2050, a framework put in place to address climate change. القاهرة – مصر، 27 مارس 2018: أعلنت إبسون اليوم أن 45 منتج لها من أجهزة العرض التي تم تصميمها لتلبية احتياجات قطاعي التعليم والشركات قد تم التصديق عليها وفقًا لاعتماد الاستدامة العالمي التابع لجهة خارجية TCO Certified. ويُدار هذا الاعتماد من قِبل TCO Development التي تملكها منظمة غير ربحية مقرها في السويد.

ومن أجل الحصول على الاعتماد، يجب أن تستوفي المنتجات معايير دورة الحياة للاستدامة الاجتماعية والبيئية طوال دورة حياة المنتج: التصنيع، والاستخدام، ونهاية العمر الافتراضي. وتغطي المعايير جوانب مثل ظروف عمل المصنع، وتقليل المواد الخطرة، جنبًا إلى جنب مع جودة الصورة العالية، وكفاءة استهلاك الطاقة أثناء استخدام المنتج والتعامل المسؤول معه عند نهاية عمره الافتراضي. ويتم التحقق بشكلٍ مستقل من الامتثال لجميع المعايير، سواء قبل عملية الاعتماد أو بعدها. وهذا يعني أن المشترين يمكن أن يشعروا بالثقة بأن المنتجات التي يشترونها ترقى إلى جميع المعايير طوال فترة قابليتها للاستخدام.

وتعتبر إبسون الشركة الرائدة في السوق العالمي لأجهزة العرض، ولقد تبوأت هذه المكانة على مدار آخر 16 عامًا. وتولت إبسون تصميم وتصنيع جميع التقنيات الأساسية المضمّنة في أجهزة العرض، بما في ذلك لوحات LCD والمصابيح؛ وهو الأمر الذي يجعلها تضمن إنتاج كل جزء مكوّن وفقًا لأعلى معايير المسؤولية الاجتماعية والبيئية ومسؤولية الشركات. 

وتعليقًا على هذا الاعتماد، قال نيكلاس ريدل، مدير TCO Certified: "يتمثل هدفنا في دفع مجال الإلكترونيات باستمرار لتطوير منتجات أكثر استدامة. ونظرًا لأن توجيهات الشراء - مثل تلك المتبعة في الاتحاد الأوروبي - تدعو الآن إلى مزيد من التركيز على الاستدامة، يمكن لمشتري أجهزة العرض استخدام معيار TCO Certified كأداة للمساعدة في تحقيق الأهداف البيئية والاجتماعية، دون المساس بأداء الصورة الذي يطلبونه في الوقت نفسه". 

وأضاف نيكلاس: "يزوّد معيار TCO Certified العلامات التجارية بمنصة للتحسين المستمر في الاستدامة. وفي إطار هذه الاعتماد، فتحت شركة إبسون مواقع إنتاجها لعمليات فحص مستقلة، والتي ستتم متابعتها الآن بعمليات تفتيش مفاجئ وتقييمات قائمة على المخاطر سنويًا". 

ومن جانبه، قال جاسون وايلي، مدير المبيعات في شركة "إبسون" الشرق الأوسط: "نحن سعداء لأن منتجات العرض الخاصة بنا تحمل الآن معيار TCO Certified. ويعني التزام إبسون بتحقيق أعلى معايير الجودة لمنتجاتها أننا ندير الكثير من عمليات التصنيع داخل الشركة؛ ما يسهِّل التحكم في ممارسات العمل عبر دورة التصنيع بالكامل، بدءًا بالإنتاج وحتى التسليم. وإضافةً إلى ذلك، فإننا نسعى جاهدين لتصميم منتجات صغيرة الحجم وموفرة للطاقة تقلل من التأثير على البيئة دون خفض مستويات الأداء". 

وأضاف قائلاً: "تدرك شركة إبسون أن القدرة الاستيعابية لكوكب الأرض محدودة، وتؤمن بأن الجميع يجب أن يتقاسموا المسؤولية عن الحد من الآثار البيئية؛ لذا تهدف الشركة إلى خفض انبعاثات ثاني أكسيد الكربون بنسبة 90% عبر دورة حياة جميع المنتجات والخدمات بحلول عام 2050".

منتجات العرض من إبسون والبيئة

تم تصميم منتجات العرض من إبسون للحد من البصمة البيئية للأعمال وتقليل استهلاك الطاقة على حدٍ سواء عند عرض الصور وعند وضع السكون. وتتضمن هذه التقنية تصميمًا أساسيًا يمتاز بكفاءة استهلاك الطاقة وخيارات لتوفير الطاقة في قائمة الوضع الاقتصادي. وعندما يكون جهاز العرض في وضع السكون، يقلل وضع السطوع المنخفض جدًا من استهلاك الطاقة عندما لا يُجري الجهاز عمليات عرض.

وعند إجراء عمليات العرض، تعمل وظيفة محسِّن الضوء المطوّرة حديثًا على ضبط سطوع المصباح تلقائيًا بناءً على الصورة المعروضة. ويتم خفض استهلاك الطاقة بنسبة تصل إلى 27% عند عرض الصور المظلمة، وتأتي جميع أجهزة العرض من إبسون مزوّدة بالوضع الاقتصادي الذي يهدف إلى إطالة عمر المصباح وخفض استهلاك الطاقة بنسبة تفوق الربع خلال العرض.

وتعتبر الإلكترونيات على نطاق واسع بأنها فئة مخاطر لانتهاكات حقوق الإنسان أثناء التصنيع؛ وهو أمر يكاد يكون من المستحيل على المشترين تقييمه بأنفسهم. وفي ظل استخدامه منذ فترة طويلة من قِبل مشتري تكنولوجيا المعلومات لمعدات الكمبيوتر، يمثل معيار TCO Certified وسيلة ضرورية لمشتري ‏الأنظمة السمعية والمرئية للتحقق من أن أجهزة العرض التي يشترونها يتم تصنيعها في ظروف عادلة. ومن خلال تحديد معيار TCO Certified في عقود الشراء، يمكنهم أيضًا أن يؤثروا بشكلٍ مباشر في الأوساط المعنية بالمجال لتحسين إنجازاتهم على صعيد المسؤولية الاجتماعية والبيئية.‬‬‬‬
