ANCHORS AWAY! EGYPTIAN ‘TEAM O2’ TOE THE LINE AT THE WORLD’S TOUGHEST ROWING RACE

Adventurer Omar Samra and Triathlete Omar Nour set off on 3,000 nautical mile rowing race across the Atlantic Ocean

Cairo, 13 December 2017- Daring Egyptian duo, adventurer Omar Samra and professional triathlete Omar Nour, dubbed ‘Team O2’, set off today in the world’s toughest rowing race - an unsupported, 3,000 nautical mile journey from San Sebastian, La Gomera in the Spanish Canary Islands to Nelson’s Dockyard English Harbour in Antigua.

The perilous journey is part of an annual ocean-rowing race called the Atlantic Challenge. 28 teams from 17 countries descended on La Gomera this week to take part in the 2017 race. If Samra and Nour successfully complete the grueling crossing, Team O2 will be the first Arab team to row across an ocean. They are also setting off with a close watch on the world record for pairs, which is 40 days, 4 hours and 3 minutes.  

Team O2 are sponsored by DHL – the world’s leading logistics company which has safely delivered their boat and 500 kg of equipment to the race start.

Speaking from the Canary Islands, Samra Commented: “I’ve never been happier to get to a start line! Although I'm well experienced as a mountain and polar adventurer, one thing is for sure – the ocean is very different to mountains and ice! I’ve learned so much over the last 10 months and we truly couldn’t have done it without the support of the team around us, including our partners at DHL.”

“There will be challenges along this incredible journey – when you’re faced with 50-foot waves, blisters, salt rash and sleep deprivation, that’s a given! But we’re as ready as we can be, and excited to get out there and show the world what you can do if you set your mind to it.”

Nour added: “I can’t believe this is it – we’re finally on the start line! The preparation we’ve gone through to get to this point has been intense - no outside assistance is permitted during the crossing, as soon as we row out of this harbor we are at the mercy of the elements – so it’s been imperative that we get every single detail locked down. It’s been incredible to have our whole support team here in La Gomera over the last week – our family, friends and the team from DHL – and to meet the other 27 teams. It really brings it home that we are part of something big. We truly hope we make everyone proud!”

Team O2 are proud to partner with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) to help raise awareness of the refugee crisis in the Middle East and around the world.

Nour and Samra have been preparing for the grueling challenge for 10 months. Their preparation has included high-intensity physical conditioning to morph their bodies into that of elite rowers – the athletes have added a combined twenty-seven kilos of body weight which they expect to lose over the course of the crossing, and have completed over 200 hours of rowing on their boat.

The duo have also undergone significant mental and medical training to ensure their safety during the row, completing courses such as the RYA Yacht-master Ocean Theory, First Aid at Sea, Sea Survival and a VHF Radio License. They have also learnt how to self-administer IV drips, and Nour, a type 1 diabetic, has been fitted with a continuous glucose monitor that sets off an alarm to alert his teammate should his blood sugar drop below a critical level.

The boat, named ‘Jan’, is 7.5m long x 1.8m wide and built of wood, fibre glass, carbon fibre and Kevlar. It is equipped with a water-maker to change the sea water into drinking water; solar panels to power GPS and other vital electrical equipment; 90 days’ worth of food rations; medical kits; tracking beacons; an ‘AIS’ allowing O2 to communicate with passing vessels; a satellite telephone and specially designed laptop called a ‘tough book’ to allow O2 to communicate with the outside world.

Samra and Nour met in 2013 and became firm friends, united by a passion for sports and adventure. Omar Samra, an adventurer, entrepreneur, motivational speaker, future astronaut, and U.N. goodwill ambassador, was the first Egyptian to climb Everest, the 7 Summits and ski to both the North and South Pole.  Professional triathlete, Omar Nour, represents Egypt on the Olympic triathlon circuit and is the fastest Arabic-speaking triathlete in the world.

The first successful Atlantic Ocean crossing was completed by Sir Chay Blyth and John Ridgeway in 1966 – a 92-day battle against hurricanes, 50 foot waves and near starvation. Sir Chay Blyth made a guest appearance at the start line today in La Gomera to set the race off.

Gulf Capital Closes Three New Growth Capital Transactions in Egypt, Africa and Turkey

Gulf Capital cements its position as the largest provider of private debt outside the traditional banks, with a total of 12 investments completed to date from its two private debt funds

(Cairo - Abu Dhabi- December 13, 2017) – Gulf Capital, one of the largest and most active alternative asset managers in the Middle East, today announced that its Private Debt Fund, Gulf Credit Opportunities Fund II, has closed three new investments for a total of US$ 46 million (AED 170 million) to support the growth plans of companies in Egypt, Sub-Saharan Africa and Turkey through structured capital solutions. All three debt transactions were executed in the fourth quarter of 2017. With a total of AED 1,744 million (US$ 471.35 million) in Assets Under Management in its private debt financing business, Gulf Capital remains the largest provider of private debt outside the traditional banks in the region.

The latest transactions bring the total number of investments of Gulf Capital’s Gulf Credit Opportunities Fund II to four, deploying over 30% of its second fund. They cover diversified sectors across the three geographies, including transportation and logistics in East Africa, oil and gas infrastructure in Egypt and consumer services in Turkey.

Dr Karim El Solh, Chief Executive Officer of Gulf Capital, said: “Our investment strategy to fund well-managed mid-cap companies operating in defensive sectors in the Middle East, Turkey and Africa (META) region has proved to be highly effective, both for our business partners and our investors. There is a huge financing gap in these markets where traditional financing is scarce, even for successful small and medium enterprises with excellent track-record looking for growth capital. Our structured investment capital has helped our portfolio companies grow to the next level, while giving our investors attractive risk-adjusted returns with a high current income.  Gulf Capital today has become the provider of choice of growth capital for promising and fast-growing companies in the region.”

Walid Cherif, Gulf Capital’s Senior Managing Director who heads Gulf Credit Partners, commented: “The US$15 million transportation and logistics deal, in particular, marks a new milestone for Gulf Capital and for Fund II, as it is our first transaction in Sub-Saharan Africa. The deal consists of a growth capital investment in one of the leading logistics company in Eastern Africa. With operations based in Tanzania and Kenya, the company offers trans-national road and rail transportation of fuel, edible oils and lubricants, bulk cargo and dry goods across East and Central Africa.

He added: “The second US$22 million transaction in the infrastructure space of oil and gas in Egypt supports the growth and operational needs of a leading Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and Gasoil storage and delivery services to the Egyptian Government. This investment is the fifth for Gulf Capital in Egypt and the second for Fund II.”

Gulf Capital also closed during this period a highly structured capital transaction in a consumer water filtration company in Turkey. The funding will be used to implement the growth plans of the company, which offers subscription-based, customer service focused, water filtration services to residential and commercial customers in the country.

The last investment represents the 12th investment for Gulf Credit Partners, the manager of Gulf Capital’s structured investments and private debt funds, and the fourth from its most recent fund, closed in 2016 at US$ 250 million.

Gulf Credit Opportunities Fund II seeks to provide tailored financing solutions to mid-market companies in the META region. Gulf Credit Partners invests in companies that generate revenues between $10 million and $200 million and operate in growth sectors that are consumer focused and that are defensive in nature such as the healthcare, education, power and water, F&B, and FMCG sectors amongst others.

(أبوظبي، 13 ديسمبر 2017) – أعلنت "جلف كابيتال"، إحدى أكبر وأنشط مدراء الأصول البديلة في منطقة الشرق الأوسط، اليوم أن صندوقها لِلدَّيْن الخاص، وهو صندوق "جلف كريديت أوبورتيونيتيز فند II" (Gulf Credit Opportunities Fund II)، قد أغلق ثلاثة استثمارات جديدة مجموعها 46 مليون دولار أميركي (170 مليون درهم) لدعم خطط النمو لدى شركات في مصر ومنطقة جنوب الصحراء الإفريقية وتركيا، وذلك من خلال حلول مهيكلة لرأس المال. وقد تمّ إنجاز الصفقات الثلاثة للمديونية خلال الربع الرابع من عام 2017. وتظلّ "جلف كابيتال" التي تتولّى إدارة 1,744 مليون درهم (471.35 مليون دولار أميركي) من الأصول من خلال أعمالها لتمويل الدَّيْن الخاص، أكبر موفّر لِلدَّيْن الخاص في المنطقة خارج المصارف التقليدية.

ومع هذه الصفقات الثلاثة، يصبح العدد الإجمالي لاستثمارات صندوق "جلف كريديت أوبورتينيتيز فند II" أربعة استثمارات، أو ما يوازي 30% من مجموع أصول هذا الصندوق. وتغطّي الاستثمارات المذكورة قطاعات متنوّعة في المناطق الثلاثة، وتشمل قطاع النقل والقطاع اللوجستي في شرق إفريقيا وقطاع مرافق النفط والغاز في مصر وقطاع الخدمات الاستهلاكية في تركيا.

وعلّق وليد شريف، مدير عام "جلف كريديت بارتنرز" وهو قسم إدارة الدَّيْن الخاص في "جلف كابيتال": "إن صفقة قطاع النقل والقطاع اللوجستي البالغة قيمتها 15 مليون دولار أميركي تحديداً تشكّل محطّة تاريخية جديدة بالنسبة لـ ’جلف كابيتال‘ وبالنسبة لـصندوقنا ’فند II‘ لأنّها صفقتنا الأولى في جنوب الصحراء الإفريقية. وتتكوّن الصفقة من استثمار لرأس مال النمو في إحدى أبرز الشركات العاملة في المجال اللوجستي في شرق إفريقيا. وتقدّم هذه الشركة التي تعمل في كل من تنزانيا وكينيا، خدمات نقل برية وخدمات نقل بواسطة القطارات العابرة للحدود لنقل الوقود وزيوت الطعام وزيوت التشحيم والشحنات غير المعبأة والبضائع الجافة، وذلك عبر شرق ووسط إفريقيا."

تابع وليد شريف قائلاً: " تدعم الصفقة الثانية، التي تبلغ قيمتها 22 مليون دولار أميركي في قطاع مرافق النفط والغاز في مصر، احتياجات النمو والاحتياجات التشغيلية لشركة رائدة في تقديم خدمات التخزين والتموين لغاز البترول المسال (LPG) والمازوت إلى الحكومة المصرية. وهذا الاستثمار هو الخامس الذي تجريه ’جلف كابيتال‘ في مصر والاستثمار الثاني بالنسبة للصندوق الثاني في مصر."

أغلقت "جلف كابيتال" خلال هذه الفترة أيضاً صفقة رأس مال مُهَيْكلة في شركة لتكرير مياه الشرب في تركيا. وسيستخدم التمويل لتنفيذ خطط النمو لدى الشركة التي تقدّم خدمات لتكرير المياه بنظام الاشتراك للمستهلكين في القطاع السكني والتجاري في البلاد.

ومع هذا الاستثمار الأخير، يصل عدد الاستثمارات التي أجرتها "جلف كريديت بارتنرز"،  وهي إدارة الاستثمارات المهيكلة وصناديق الدَين الخاص في "جلف كابيتال"، إلى 12 استثماراً وهو الاستثمار الرابع من صندوق "جلف كريديت أوبورتيونيتيز فند II" الذي أغلق في عام 2016 عند 250 مليون دولار أميركي.

Mohammed bin Rashid Space Center Encourages Emirati Youth to Register for “UAE Astronaut Programme”

UAE Astronaut Programme to make history with first Emirati and Arab astronauts’ space flight

• More than 1000 applications received to date

Dubai, 11 December 2017: Following the announcement from H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Center is now accepting entries for the UAE Astronaut Programme. At the end of 2018, four carefully selected Emirati candidates will be chosen to form the UAE Astronaut team and undergo a three-year long intensive training programme to enable them to board the International Space Station (ISS).

The UAE Astronaut Programme has received more than 1000 applications of enthusiasts, only few days after the announcement. Young Emiratis - including all fields -  ex-pilots, doctors, scientists, teachers and others -  can register at www.mbrsc.ae/astronauts. Finalists will go through training in theory and science, as well as specialty qualification courses, over several months and in accordance with the highest international standards and requirements. The team of four young Emirati astronauts who will be sent to space as part of the country’s growing space exploration programme segues with its overall strategy to integrate advanced sciences into its national growth matrix.

Commenting on the initiative, H.E. Hamad Obaid Al Mansouri, Chairman of the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Center, said: " The UAE Astronaut Programme is a boundless ambition that showcases the UAE’s ongoing investment in science programmes to help serve national interests in the future, actively participating in global space exploration, and exploring the prospects of human life in space, including the possibility of inhabiting other planets.”

The selection of applicants to the UAE Astronaut Programme begins once the candidate submits his or her application which are then carefully screened and assessed based on the qualifications of the applicants. Shortlisted candidates will be chosen to undertake theoretical and practical tests, training and qualification courses, and aptitude tests, over several months, in accordance with the international standards required for different missions. This intensive screening programme allows Mohammed bin Rashid Space Center to choose the most suitable candidates for the board the International Space Station (ISS) in the first UAE space flight.

Further commenting on the programme, Salem Humaid Al Marri, Assistant Director General for Scientific and Technical Affairs in the UAE and Program Manager of UAE Astronaut Programme said: "As per the vision of the UAE National Space Programme, and the wider vision for the advancement of the nation, the UAE Astronaut Programme aims to prepare and qualify Emirati astronauts through strong international cooperation and knowledge-transfer across space science. Our mission in space hasn’t even started, it is the start of endless journey. The First Astronaut programme is the latest in a series of space projects announced and will be announced by the nation to ensure that the promise of space will be realized for the benefit of generations to come.

The UAE Astronaut Program provides Emirati youth with a unique opportunity to make a significant contribution to the advancement of UAE’s space exploration and innovation industry. Ultimately, four well suited candidates will be chosen as part of the UAE Astronaut Team who will undergo a series of training programmes to hone and develop the required skillset to board the International Space Station (ISS) in the first UAE space flight. They will also be responsible for sharing their knowledge and experiences with other international astronauts and promote UAE achievements in the space sector.”

The chosen four astronauts forming the UAE Astronaut team will be subjected to a series of training programmes, which are divided into a year-long basic training modules and advanced training modules which will be conducted over a period of two years. As part of the programme, the astronauts will also travel to various Astronaut Training Centres around the world providing state-of-the-art simulation systems in the field of space training, to enable them to acquire the best skills in this area.

• أكثر من 1000 شاب وشابة تقدموا حتى الآن للمشاركة في البرنامج

دبي، 11 ديسمبر 2017: بعد إطلاق صاحب السمو الشيخ محمد بن راشد آل مكتوم نائب رئيس الدولة رئيس مجلس الوزراء حاكم دبي رعاه الله برنامج "الإمارات لروّاد الفضاء"، بدأ مركز محمد بن راشد للفضاء باستقبال طلبات المواطنين الإماراتيين من أصحاب المؤهلات للتسجيل في البرنامج بغية اختيار أربعة منهم مع نهاية عام 2018 لإعدادهم وتدريبهم وإرسالهم في مهمات إلى محطة الفضاء الدولية (ISS).

وكان البرنامج قد حصد في الأيام القليلة التي تلت الإعلان عنه أكثر من ألف طلب للمشاركة وما زال مركز محمد بن راشد للفضاء يستقبل المزيد من الطلبات عبر الموقع الإلكترونيwww.mbrsc.ae/astronauts. ويستقبل المركز طلبات الشباب من مختلف الاختصاصات سواء كانوا طيارين أو طيارين سابقين أو أطباء أو علماء أو معلمين وغيرها من الاختصاصات. على أن يتم دراسة طلباتهم بناءً على مؤهلاتهم بحيث يتم اختيار أربعة منهم ليمثلوا الدولة في كافة مهماتها الفضائية.

عقب الإعلان، قال سعادة حمد عبيد المنصوري، رئيس مجلس إدارة مركز محمد بن راشد للفضاء: "لا شك في أن برنامج "الإمارات لروّاد الفضاء" يشكّل خطوة مهمة للإمارات بحيث يعزز موقعها الرائد في مجال العلوم والصناعات الفضائية عربياً وعالمياً. كما سيساهم في تحفيز شبابنا وشاباتنا ويساعدهم على تحقيق طموحاتهم وأحلامهم مهما كانت."

من جهته، قال سعادة يوسف حمد الشيباني، مدير عام مركز محمد بن راشد للفضاء: "أود ان أتوجه بالشكر إلى الشباب والشابات الذين لبّوا نداء صاحب السمو الشيخ محمد بن راشد آل مكتوم وتقدموا للمشاركة في برنامج "الإمارات لروّاد الفضاء" منذ الآن. ويعتبر هذا الإقبال خير دليل على طموحات الشباب الإماراتي ورغبتهم في التميّز على المستوى العربي والعالمي ليكونوا مثالاً يحتذى به في مجال الاكتشاف والابتكار."

ويعتبر برنامج "الإمارات لروّاد الفضاء" الأول من نوعه في المنطقة ويشمل مجموعة من أنظمة الدراسة والبحث العلمي التي تهدف إلى دفع عجلة النمو في قطاع الفضاء في الإمارات بالإضافة إلى الاستفادة من الخبرات والابتكارات التكنولوجية في المجال من أجل تسهيل حياة الأجيال القادمة فضلاً على تطوير حلول لمواجهة أبرز التحديات التي يواجهها العالم اليوم.

تبدأ عملية اختيار المتقدمين إلى برنامج الإمارات لرواد الفضاء بمجرد أن يقوم المرشح بإرسال طلب الانضمام عبر الموقع، حيث سيقوم فريق مركز محمد بن راشد للفضاء الذي يدير البرنامج بتقييم الطلبات وانتقاء المرشحين الذين نجحوا مبدئياً في اجتياز الشروط الأولية ليبدأوا بالتواصل مع أفضل المرشحين الذين سيخضعون للفحص الطبي العام، والاختبارات النفسية، ثم اختبارات المقابلات الشخصية ليتم التأكد من قدرة المرشحين على خوض تحديات تجربة الانطلاق إلى الفضاء المحفوفة بالتحديات.

وقال المهندس سالم حميد المري، مساعد المدير العام للشؤون العلمية والتقنية ومدير برنامج الإمارات لرواد الفضاء: "يوفر البرنامج خطة متكاملة تهدف إلى تأهيل روّاد فضاء إماراتيين علمياً وعملياً من خلال عقد شراكات مع أبرز مراكز تدريب روّاد الفضاء في العالم. ويشكّل الوصول إلى محطة الفضاء الدولية الخطوة الأولى تليها مجموعة من المهمات التي ستسمح لدولة الإمارات استكشاف الفضاء الخارجي بما يعود بالنفع على البشرية ككل."

وبعد اختيار روّاد الفضاء الإماراتيين الأربعة، سيخضعون لسلسلة من البرامج التدريبية المكثفة التي تنقسم إلى تدريب أولي وتدريب متطوّر وتمتد على أكثر من عامين بعد مراحل التقييم. وبعد ذلك سيتوجه روّاد الفضاء الإماراتيين للمشاركة في مهام بحثية تحظى بدعم عالمي. وسيكون على روّاد الفضاء الإماراتيين القيام بأبحاث علمية متطورة وقيّمة تسهم في تطوير المشاريع الفضائية الإماراتية في المستقبل.
