Smart Dubai and Majid Al Futtaim Sign MOU

MOU will include collaboration around data enrichment, policies and standards, education, and emerging innovative technologies

[UAE, December, 11, 2017]: Smart Dubai and Majid Al Futtaim today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to collaborate in areas that will help to enhance the Emirate’s data and analytics capabilities. The agreement has been developed in line with the government’s vision to empower, deliver and promote an efficient, seamless, safe and impactful city experience for residents making Dubai the smartest and happiest city on earth.

The MOU was signed by Dr Aisha Bin Bishr, Director-General of the Smart Dubai Office and Alain Bejjani, Chief Executive Officer at Majid Al Futtaim – Holding at a signing ceremony held in Dubai.

As part of the MOU, Majid Al Futtaim will collaborate with Smart Dubai in four critical areas: data enrichment, policy, education, and innovative technology. Both organisations will work together to enhance and improve raw data, while finding ways to make data a more valuable asset.

Smart Dubai and Majid Al Futtaim will develop joint education workshops to ensure increased understanding and capabilities and to identify and apply best practices. The MOU will allow both organisations to explore opportunities in emerging technologies such as Blockchain Artificial Intelligence and Internet of Things. Collaboration will also take place on innovative platforms used to source, collect, analyse and store data.

Dr Aisha Bint Butti Bin Bishr, Director-General of the Smart Dubai Office (SDO) said: “As the government body tasked with spearheading Dubai’s smart transformation, Smart Dubai has led the efforts to develop an unprecedented smart and connected lifestyle for the city’s residents and visitors. "دبي الذكية" و"ماجد الفطيم" توقعان مذكرة تفاهم

دبي، الإمارات العربية المتحدة، 11 ديسمبر 2017: أبرمت «دبي الذكية» وشركة «ماجد الفطيم» اليوم مذكرة تفاهم بهدف التعاون في المجالات التي تساعد على تحسين القدرات التي تتمتع بها إمارة دبي في مجال إدارة البيانات وتحليلاتها. وجرى الإعداد لاتفاقية مذكرة التفاهم بما يتماشى مع التوجه الحكومي الرامي إلى الارتقاء بسبل الحياة الكريمة والآمنة لسكان دبي وزوارها، والتحوّل بدبي لتصبح المدينة الأذكى والأسعد على وجه الأرض.

وقد وقع مذكرة التفاهم كل من الدكتورة عائشة بنت بطي بن بشر المدير العام لمكتب دبي الذكية، والسيد آلان بجاني الرئيس التنفيذي لشركة ماجد الفطيم القابضة. وبموجب هذه المذكرة، سيتم التعاون بين الطرفين في أربعة مجالات حيوية تتضمن إثراء البيانات، ورسم السياسات وتحديد المعايير، والتوعية بأهمية إدارة البيانات وتحليلاتها، والاستفادة من تقنيات الابتكار الناشئة. وتعتزم الجهتان مضافرة الجهود بُغية تحسين سبل الاستفادة من البيانات في صورتها الأولى المجردة، والوصول إلى جعلها جزءاً من الأصول الحيوية المهمة للإمارة.

كما سيعقد الطرفان وفقاً لمذكرة التفاهم، ورش عمل تعريفية توعوية، لضمان رفع الوعي بالإمكانيات التي تنطوي عليها الإدارة السليمة للبيانات وتحليلاتها، فضلاً عن تعريف أفضل الممارسات وضمان اتباعها، فيما يمكن للجانبين، بحسب المذكرة، النظر في الفرص التي تتيحها التقنيات الناشئة ذات الصلة بالبيانات، مثل "بلوك تشين"، والذكاء الاصطناعي، وإنترنت الأشياء، والتعاون في سبيل الحصول على البيانات وجمعها وتحليلها وحفظها من خلال المنصات الإبداعية المستخدمة في هذا المجال.

وقالت سعادة الدكتورة عائشة بنت بطي بن بشر، "بصفتها الجهة الحكومية المكلفة بقيادة التحول الذكي لإمارة دبي، عززت دبي الذكية جهودها الرامية إلى بناء نمط حياة ذكي ومتطور لم يسبق له مثيل، ومن خلال ذلك تمكنت من جمع ثروة رقمية كبيرة ساهمت بتطوير النظام الاقتصادي للإمارة، بشكل يواكب تحقيق هدفها الأسمى وهو تحويل دبي إلى أسعد وأذكى مدينة على مستوى العالم".

ويأتي إبرام مذكرة التفاهم بين "دبي الذكية"  و"ماجد الفطيم" في أعقاب تأسيس الشركة "كلية ماجد الفطيم لتحليلات البيانات والتكنولجيا" تحت إشراف "معهد ماجد الفطيم لإعداد القادة"، وهي المدرسة التي أسستها الشركة لمساعدتها على تحسين قدراتها المتقدمة في تحليل البيانات.

Gartner Says Top Five Smartphone Vendors Achieved Growth in the Third Quarter of 2017

Xiaomi Exhibited Best Performance of the Quarter 

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – 11 December 2017 — Global sales of smartphones to end users totaled 383 million units in the third quarter of 2017, a 3 percent increase over the same period in 2016, according to Gartner, Inc. All of the top five smartphone vendors achieved double-digit growth apart from Apple, which achieved a 5.7 percent increase.

"Despite market weakness in China, sales of smartphones rose in the third quarter of 2017 (see Table 1)," said Anshul Gupta, research director at Gartner. “Emerging Asia/Pacific (15 percent increase) and North America (11.2 percent increase) drove the smartphone growth in the quarter.”

"In emerging Asia Pacific, both Samsung and Huawei saw healthy demand as along with Xiaomi and Vivo, which were able to grow their footprint outside their home markets," added Mr. Gupta. "In North America, Samsung was the driving force in the quarter due to its new flagship products." 

Samsung’s smartphone sales recorded a double-digit increase (19.3 percent) in the third quarter of 2017. "Renewed pushes of the newly designed Galaxy S8, S8+ and Note 8 smartphones have brought back growing demand for Samsung smartphones, which helped it compete against Chinese manufacturers and deliver a solid performance in the quarter," said Mr. Gupta. "“The last time Samsung achieved a double-digit growth was in the fourth quarter of 2015."

Apple's sales grew 5.7 percent year over year. Apple returned to growth in China and also saw strong sales in many of the emerging markets, including India. This is due to the continued sales of legacy iPhones, including the iPhone 5S which retails at around $240 street price in most markets.

Xiaomi achieved the strongest growth, exhibiting an 80 percent increase in the third quarter of 2017. Xiaomi's growth came more from international markets than from China, where it faces strong competition from Huawei, Oppo and Vivo. India continues to be the biggest and highest-growth market for Xiaomi outside China, but growing sales from Latin America and Russia are also boosting its sales.

Greater China exhibited a decline of 11 percent in the third quarter due to consolidation around local and lesser-known brands (see Table 2). Buyers are preferring known and high-priced smartphones, which is cannibalizing demand of budget smartphones from local brands. In Western Europe and North America, demand for premium smartphones from top brands led to smartphone sales growth in the third quarter.

Leading Chinese manufacturers Oppo, Huawei, Vivo and Xiaomi continued to drive sales across emerging markets, led by their midprice and budget smartphones with a focus on 4G connectivity and better cameras.

"The arrival of Apple's new flagship iPhones at the end of the third quarter of 2017 has delayed smartphone purchases into the fourth quarter of 2017," said Mr. Gupta. "Following compelling offers on Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the holiday season will likely boost sales of smartphones before the end of the year. We estimate the fourth quarter’s smartphone sales will boost total sales for the full year. We expect smartphone sales will reach 1.57 billion units in 2017," concluded Mr. Gupta.

The competition will be held among AUC student teams where they will present their proposals to a panel of Egyptian officials and AUC professors. Winning teams will receive a total of 12 internships at several Egyptian ministries, including the Ministry of Investment, Ministry of Planning, Ministry of Social Solidarity and Ministry of Higher education.

Panel will include Khaled Fouada, governor of South Sinai; Mohamed Shawky Rashwan, head of the National Sinai Development Authority; Ghada Barsoum, associate professor of public policy and Khaled Tarabieh, assistant professor of architecture.
