Dubai, United Arab Emirates, 14 September 2017: Jaguar Land Rover has hired the first of the next generation of electronics and software engineering geniuses following the recent code-breaking recruitment challenge within the Gorillaz app. The brand and the band came together to build a recruitment initiative that seeks to uncover the future of Jaguar Land Rover’s talent.

Daniel Dunkley, a 23-year-old from Gloucester, UK, is the first successful code-breaker to join Jaguar Land Rover. Daniel left school at 16 and was working as a controls engineer at a local quarry. His coding and software skills are completely self-taught from an early interest in playing computer games at home with his older brother. He starts work on 2 October as a software engineer at Jaguar Land Rover in Gaydon, Warwickshire.

The Gorillaz App launched the Jaguar Land Rover recruitment area in June this year, through a 360-environment situated in the garage of the band’s home, which featured the iconic videos from the Gorillaz’s past. It was here that applicants could explore and take a two-part challenge.

The first part, designed to educate users about the benefits of electric vehicles, involves assembling the Jaguar I-PACE Concept, Jaguar's first all-electric five-seater sports car. Users can learn about the vehicle’s performance, battery technology, space, charging and range.

The second and more demanding part of the game, developed to engage and recruit budding electronic wizards and coders, will focus on cracking code – there are more than 4,000 combinations, as well as cipher in an alternate reality format. The challenges put a stronger focus on skills and talents than on qualifications.

Gorillaz and Jaguar Land Rover will continue the search for world-class talent. Fans interested in a job at Jaguar Land Rover can complete the coding challenge on the Gorillaz app and go straight to interview. The code-breaking puzzle tests real-world skills the new generation of software and engineering talent must have. The challenge remains open worldwide.

Noodle, the virtual band’s guitarist and a Jaguar Land Rover ambassador, said: “Think big and do better, my motto. Stop putting those filters on your food and download this app immediately. The first hire has happened, so get involved and win!”

Daniel Dunkley said: “I’m overwhelmed by how much has happened in the last two months. I read about the coding challenge set by Jaguar Land Rover and Gorillaz on BBC News and decided to have a go. We did the interview by Google Chat then I was invited to Gaydon to talk about my new job. It completely blew me away that I didn’t have to fill out any application forms.

“I was thrilled when they offered me a job! My dad drives a Land Rover Defender so I have always been a fan. I can’t believe I may now get to work on the next generation Defender!”

So far, almost 400,000 people have downloaded the Gorillaz app. Of the 41,000 who have taken the challenge, almost 500 cracked the code.

جارتنر تصدر تقريرها الخاص بأمن السحاب لعام 2017

يناقش المحللون قضايا أمن السحاب خلال قمة جارتنر للأمن وإدارة المخاطر 2017 في دبي 

دبي، الإمارات العربية المتحدة، 14 سبتمبر 2017: تؤدي زيادة الطلب على تقنيات الحوسبة السحابية وارتفاع مستويات اعتمادها إلى تعزيز الاهتمام بقضايا حماية البيانات والتطبيقات والعمليات التي تتواجد في بيئة الحوسبة السحابية في وقتنا الحالي. ويساعد تقرير هايبسايكل لأمن السحاب، الذي تصدره شركة الدراسات والأبحاث جارتنر، المختصين في مجال أمن المعلومات على فهم وتحديد أهم التقنيات الجاهزة للاستخدام على نحو واسع، بالإضافة إلى التقنيات التي مازالت، بالنسبة لمعظم الشركات، على بعد سنوات عديدة من الانتشار والتحول إلى تقنيات ذات إنتاجية عالية. وفي هذا السياق قال جاي هايسر، نائب رئيس الأبحاث في جارتنر: "ماتزال قضية أمن المعلومات هي السبب الأكثر شيوعاً لتفادي استخدام السحابة العامة، لكن من المفارقات التي نشهدها هي أن الشركات التي تستخدم السحابة العامة تعتبر أمن المعلومات إحدى الفوائد الأساسية التي توفرها هذه السحابة". 

كما أن قدرات الدفاع ضد الهجمات لدى معظم شركات توفير الخدمات السحابية لم تظهر على أنها نقطة ضعف رئيسية حتى الآن، لكن عملاء هذه الشركات قد لا يمتلكون القدرة على استخدام هذه القدرات على النحو الأمثل.

ذروة التوقعات (من المخطط 1) 

تعتبر ذروة التوقعات المبالغ فيها مرحلة من مراحل الحماس الزائد والتوقعات غير الواقعية، حيث يكون هناك ضجة كبيرة حول التقنيات التي لا يتم نشرها واستخدامها بشكل ناجح. والتقنيات التي ترأست ذروة التوقعات هذا العام هي تقنيات الحماية ضد فقدان البيانات للأجهزة الجوالة، وتقنيات الإدارة الرئيسية كخدمة والشبكات المُعرفة بالبرمجيات. وتتوقع جارتنر أن تستغرق هذه التقنيات خمس سنوات على أقل تقدير للوصول إلى مستويات مناسبة من الاعتمادية والإنتاجية.

ذيل التوقعات (من المخطط 1) 

عندما لاتصل بعض التقنيات إلى ذروة التوقعات المبالغ فيها، ولايتم ذكرها ضمن الضجة الكبيرة التي تحققها تقنيات أخرى، فإنها سوف تختفي بسرعة وتصبح من الماضي وتعود بخيبة الأمل على أصحابها.  

وماتزال تقنيات التعافي من الكوارث كخدمة DRaaS في المراحل الأولى من النضج والتطور، مع نسبة انتشار في الأسواق بلغت 20 إلى 50 بالمئة فقط. وتعتبر الشركات الأصغر حجماً هي أولى الشركات التي تتبنى هذه الخدمة مع حاجتها إلى إدارة برامج التعافي من الكوارث الخاصة بها.

 

الحوسبة السحابية الخاصة - تشهد حالات استخدام المتخصصين كأطراف ثالثة لبناء السحب الخاصة انتشاراً واسعاً وذلك نظراً للتكلفة العالية والتعقيدات الكبيرة التي يمكن أن تصاحب عملية بناء سحابة حقيقية خاصة.

الوصول إلى القمة هو عندما تظهر النتائج الإيجابية للعمل الشاق والتجارب المستمرة للتقنيات الجديدة التي تم نشرها ضمن مجموعة واسعة من الشركات.  

ويمكن لتقنيات الحماية ضد فقدان البيانات أن تقلل إلى حد كبير من التسرب الغير مقصود للبيانات الحساسة. لكن مع ذلك، فإنه من السهل نسبياً بالنسبة لأي دخيل مصمم على التحايل أن يصل إلى هذه البيانات في نهاية الأمر.  

ومن المرجح أن تغدو البنية التحتية كخدمة IaaS إحدى الميزات التي يمكن أن تقدمها شركات تزويد تقنيات الحوسبة السحابية، وبالفعل باتت شركة أمازون توفر عروضها الخاصة بذلك في حين تدعم مايكروسوفت الأدوات المجانية BitLocker و DMcrypt لصالح نظام لينوكس.  

مرحلة الاستقرار (من المخطط 1) 

وصلت أربعة تقنيات إلى مرحلة الاستقرار لناحية الإنتاجية، ما يعني أن ميزات هذه التقنيات قد تم استعراضها على أرض الواقع وأثبتت حضورها وفعاليتها. فقد وصلت تقنيات الترميز المميز Tokenization وتقنيات مراقبة الأجهزة الافتراضية عالية الضمان high-assurance hypervisors وتقنيات أمن التطبيقات كخدمة application security as a service، إلى مرحلة الاستقرار وانضمت إلى خدمات تدقيق الهوية identity-proofing services.

موانئ دبي العالمية-السخنة تستقبل أولى سفن الشحن العملاقة للحمولات الجافة بالميناء

استقبلت موانئ دبي العالمية-السخنة، المحطة البحرية المحلية التابعة لموانئ دبي العالمية، والتي تُعد كبرى الشركات المتخصصة في الخدمات البحرية واللوجستية والخدمات المساندة والمحطات البحرية والبرية وجزءا من سلاسل التوريد حول العالم، مؤخراً السفينة MINI، أولى سفن الشحن العملاقة للحمولات الجافة بالميناء.

وصلت السفينة العملاقة لميناء السخنة من البرازيل وهي مُحمّلة بأكثر من 111000 طن متري من خام الحديد. يبلغ طول السفينة العملاقة 225 متر، وعرضها إلى 43 متر. تُعد السفينة MINI دليلاً هاماً على جهود والتزام سلطات الميناء في تحسين وتطوير البنية التحتية التي تتمتع بها موانئ دبي-السخنة.     

واحتفالاً بهذه المناسبة الهامة، قام السيد/ أحمد حسن، مدير العمليات التشغيلية في موانئ دبي العالمية-السخنة، بإهداء درع من الكريستال لقائد المركب القبطان الهندي/ باتانيك أماريندرا، كما أقام مسئولو موانئ دبي-السخنة احتفالاً خاصاً بهه المناسبة. يُعد استقبال هذه السفينة العملاقة خطوة جديدة لتأكيد توجه موانئ دبي العالمية نحو "السهولة في أداء الأعمال"، وابراز التزامها بتطوير ونمو قطاع الشحن والموانئ.  

وتعليقاً على عبور السفينة العملاقة في ميناء السخنة، يقول السيد/ أجاي سينج، الرئيس التنفيذي لموانئ دبي العالمية السخنة: "إنّ قدوم هذه السفينة العملاقة للموانئ المصرية يقدم مزايا اقتصاديات الحجم الكبير لشركات الشحن، وهو ما ينتج عنه وفورات هائلة في الوقت والمال عند شحن الحمولات المختلفة".

Why nuclear power is the way to clean energy for Egypt

The imminent El Dabaa nuclear power plant project is set to transform Egypt’s energy mix. UN energy expert  Dr. Yousry A. Shady reflects why the project is good news for Egypt’s economy and the environment.

Egypt has recently implemented a new approach in making use of clean energy resources, including nuclear and renewables (wind, solar, biomass etc.). By 2022, Egypt aims to have a new power mix, where renewables represent 20% of the total electricity production nationwide.

Following the establishment and operation of 4 reactors at El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant, it is projected that the nuclear power will represent 10% of the country's electricity production by 2026. In 2050, and after the economic improvements of nuclear power resources in Egypt, it is expected that nuclear power contribution in electricity production nationwide will jump to 50%.

Routinely, nuclear power plants are producing emission-free and clean energy. Rosatom is working extensively in developing safety of NPP, to ensure the highest standard of environmental protection.

Throughout our modern history, Russia (formerly Soviet Union) has helped Egypt in many fields, including but not limited to industrialization, and of course the building of High Dam in Aswan. The vital role of Russia in supporting Egypt in many crises and political dilemmas was very important in building a positive image of Russia among Egyptians. Contracting with Rosatom by direct order was a result of Russian excellence in nuclear technologies, in addition to Russia’s historically standing by Egypt in many ways.   

The political factor wasn’t the only reason behind the choice of Rosatom to build the El Dabaa Power Plant, but also the technical excellence of the company, which has built and operated tens of VVER reactors all over the world. The newest type of these reactors are VVER-1000 and VVER-1200. There are about 50 operational reactors of the former type, with tens of VVER reactors still under construction.

Egypt has selected VVER-1200 reactors that belong to the 3+ generation, and are regarded to be the safest reactors in the world now. Rosatom has developed more than 8 different layers of safety, to ensure the highest standard of security in case of any malfunction.

All components of VVER-1200 reactors are Russian made, and thus they require no additional permits (contrarily to components manufactured by other nuclear countries). One of the key reasons why Egypt has selected Rosatom to build the plant is that Russia guarantees the provision of nuclear fuel throughout the operational lifetime of the four reactors at El Dabaa (the operational lifetime ranges from 60 to 80 years). Other benefits are the operation, cooperation and training contracts, in addition to the local contribution in building El Dabaa power plant.

لماذا تُعد الطاقة النووية بديلاً آمناً للحصول على طاقة نظيفة في مصر

من المتوقع أن يغير مشروع محطة الضبعة النووية مزيج الطاقة في مصر بشكل جذري. وفي هذه المقالة يتحدث خبير الطاقة العالمي بالأمم المتحدة الأستاذ الدكتور/ يسري أبو شادي عن الأسباب التي تجعل من هذا المشروع خبراً ساراً يصب في مصلحة الاقتصاد والبيئة المصرية على حد سواء.

لقد بدأت مصر مؤخراً في الاتجاه لمصادر الطاقة النظيفة، والمتمثلة في الطاقة النووية والمتجددة (طاقة الرياح-الشمس-والمخلفات العضوية). ومع حلول عام 2022، تستهدف مصر اعادة تشكيل مزيج الطاقة لديها، حيث من المتوقع أن تشكل الطاقة المتجددة 20% من إنتاج الطاقة الكهربائية على المستوى القومي.

أما بالنسبة للطاقة النووية، فبعد الانتهاء من إقامة وتشغيل 4 مفاعلات نووية تضمها محطة الضبعة، فسوف تمثل الطاقة النووية 10% من إنتاج الطاقة الكهربائية في البلاد بحلول عام 2026. وفي عام 2050، وبعد تحسن اقتصاديات مصادر الطاقة النووية في مصر، فمن المنتظر أن تسهم هذه المصادر لما يتخطى 50% من إنتاج الطاقة الكهربائية بحلول عام 2050.

وتتميز المحطات النووية بأنها تنتج طاقة نظيفة بدون انبعاثات كربونية في حالة عملها بصورة روتينية من الناحية الفنية. في الوقت نفسه، تبذل شركة روس أتوم جهوداً مكثفة لتطوير معايير أمان المفاعلات النووية، وتلافي أي تأثيرات سلبية لها في البيئة المحيطة، بما يضمن أعلى معايير الأمان والحماية البيئية.  

من ناحية أخرى، وعلى مدار تاريخنا الحديث، قامت روسيا (أو الاتحاد السوفييتي السابق) بمساعدة مصر في مجالات عديدة منها على سبيل المثال لا الحصر بناء قاعدة تصنيعية حديثة وبالطبع إقامة السد العالي في أسوان. إنّ الدور الروسي في مساندة مصر في أزماتها وحروبها السياسية أدى لتكوين رصيد شعبي وبناء صورة ايجابية لروسيا لدى غالبية الشعب المصري. وجاء التعاقد مع شركة روس أتوم بالأمر المباشر كنتيجة طبيعية للتفوق الفني الروسي، وكذلك مواقفها التاريخية السابقة مع مصر.

ولم يكن السبب السياسي فقط هو العامل الوحيد لاختيار روس أتوم لبناء محطة الضبعة النووية، ولكن كان أساس الاختيار بالدرجة الأولى هو التميز الفني للشركة. لقد قامت روس أتوم بتصميم وبناء وتشغيل عشرات المفاعلات الحديثة من مفاعلات القدرة المائية VVER في جميع أنحاء العالم. ومن أحدث أنواع تلك المفاعلات كل من VVER-1000 وVVER-1200.  

وهناك حالياً ما يقرب من 50 مفاعل من هذا النوع يعملون بكل كفاءة، هذ بخلاف عشرات المفاعلات الأخرى التي مازالت تحت الإنشاء أو في مرحلة التعاقد. وجاء اختيار مصر لمفاعلات VVER-1200 وهي مفاعلات الجيل الثالث بلس، باعتبارها أكثر المفاعلات أماناً في الوقت الحالي. هذا وقد قامت روس أتوم بتطوير 8 مستويات للأمان في هذه المفاعلات لضمان أقصى معايير الأمان والسلامة، حتى  في حالة حدوث أي عطل في المعدات.

في الوقت نفسه، فإنّ جميع مكونات مفاعلات VVER-1200 روسية الصنع وبالتالي لا تحتاج لتراخيص أو موافقات اضافية من أي دولة (بعكس بعض الدول النووية الأخرى). إنّ قيام روسيا بتوريد الوقود النووي لمفاعلات الضبعة على مدار عمرها الإنتاجي (والذي يتراوح من 60 إلى80 عاماً) يُعد أيضاً من أهم أسباب اختيار روس أتوم العالمية لبناء محطة الضبعة النووية، هذا إلى جانب  عقود التشغيل والتعاون والتدريب ومشاركة الصناعة الوطنية في مصر في بناء هذه المفاعلات.

PROFESSOR EHAB ABDEL RAHMAN NAMED AUC’S NEW PROVOST

September 11, 2017, Cairo- The American University in Cairo (AUC) announced today the appointment of professor Ehab Abdel-Rahman as the new provost of the University. After many years of service at the University, Abdel-Rahman both recognizes the unique qualities that have shaped AUC into the leading global institution that it is today and brings a fresh perspective in his new role to continue moving forward. “This is a time for key discussions about the future of the University,” Abdel-Rahman said. “I hope to capitalize on the unique opportunity to engage students, faculty, staff and alumni in a deeper dialogue about our structures, policies, processes and, more importantly, our vision for the future of AUC. We have the right people to guide this dialogue.”

Abdel-Rahman sees AUC as holding a significant position in Egypt and the larger international educational community. As provost, he perceives ample potential in the AUC community to continue expanding the University. “AUC is a major hub for innovation that helps to drive economic growth and address socioeconomic challenges,” he declared. “We aspire to become leaders shaping the globe, a goal that can only be achieved through our collaboration as a community.”

As vice provost, Abdel-Rahman became familiar with all aspects of the University. “Working closely with three great provosts, as well as well-experienced deans, has given me a comprehensive view of the University,” he explained. ”All the challenges that AUC has faced in the last few years have been defining moments and presented opportunities to enhance operation.” 

Prior to becoming a professor, Abdel-Rahman first immersed himself in the world of academia as a passionate student. He received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in physics from Helwan University. He then traveled to earn his PhD in physics from the University of Utah.

Before coming to AUC, Abdel-Rahman worked as assistant professor of physics at Helwan University. He first joined AUC as assistant professor of physics, in 2006. He went on to become chair of the Department of Physics, and eventually took on roles as associate dean of graduate studies and research in the School of Sciences and Engineering and director of the Yousef Jameel Science and Technology Research Center in 2011. Two years later, Abdel-Rahman entered senior administration, becoming associate provost for research, vice provost and, most recently, interim provost.

Throughout his years at AUC, Abdel-Rahman has been recognized for his countless accomplishments and demonstrated dedication to improving the University. He has been presented with the Research Innovation Award, Excellence in Teaching Award, Innovative Teaching Award, President’s Distinguished Service Award and Outstanding Service Award, among many others.  

Aside from teaching, Abdel-Rahman has also devoted time to his research, specifically focusing on thermoacoustics and photonics. He has published more than 80 technical papers and reports, and has five U.S. patents. From 2007 to 2009, he served as Egypt’s energy expert, using his rich knowledge and experience to aid the country in its research collaborations with the European Union. “It was a very interesting and enlightening time,” said Abdel-Rahman. “As an energy expert, I worked to identify opportunities for the European Union to fund research and development in energy.”

Abdel-Rahman has not abandoned his own research pursuits as provost and professor, working with a team to enhance the performance of a newly developed 2 kW thermoacoustic power converter. However, in his new position, he has begun grappling with a new research challenge. “The research question around which my mind is now revolving concerns how to improve and assess the quality of education at AUC,” he noted. “My research team now is the entire AUC community. Together, we will answer this question.”
