First Central Hotel Suites, managed by Dubai-based Central Hotels group, has been awarded Green Key Certification 2016-2017 for its green practices that include a host of environment-friendly energy, water and waste management initiatives.

Green Key is a sustainability certification program for hotels and accommodation that was developed by the Foundation for Environment Education. As non-governmental, non-profit and independent program, Green Key is recognized by the World Tourism Organisation and United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), and is the largest global eco-label relating to accommodation. Since 2013, Emirates Green Building Council acts as Green Key National Operator in the United Arab Emirates.

VIMS PRESENTS THE FIRST ULTRA-HD VIDEO ENDOSCOPE AT ARAB HEALTH 2017

United Arab Emirates:January 2017- For its first appearance at Arab Health, VIMS is bringing a breakthrough technology. From January 30 to February 2, 2017, the French leader in laparoscopy will be exhibiting an endoscopy column aimed at simplifying the preoperative phase. It is designed to consist of the smallest possible number of devices: a one-piece videoscope and a single-use sterile sheath. This level of rationalization confirms the expertise of video surgery equipment supplier VIMS, which has been at the leading edge of medical imaging technology for nearly 25 years.

The market for minimally invasive surgery is expanding fast, boosted in particular by rising life expectancy. Thanks to R&D efforts, outpatient surgery is on the increase, to the great satisfaction of public and private institutions that have to keep more and more their costs under control. Furthermore, surgeons need efficient and easy-to-use equipment to reduce the time required to prepare for operations. VIMS, which develops and markets integrated 4K visualization solutions for minimally invasive surgery (laparoscopy and arthroscopy), has designed the system to make surgeons’ live easier:

UAE Energy Plan 2050 to attract sustainable long-term investments

LBS expert highlights the significance of a long-term energy plan in achieving a sustainable future

25 January 2017, Dubai, UAE – Having a long-term energy plan will boost sustainable long-term investments in the UAE, says a London Business School expert.

This month, the UAE government unveiled a three-decade energy plan that aims to save the country billions of dirhams while still sustaining economic growth. The plan has been designed to balance the environmental goals of the country as well as fulfilling its economic needs.

Commenting on the new Energy Plan, Ioannis Ioannou, Associate Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship, London Business School said: “The main goal of the UAE Energy Plan 2050 is for clean energy to account for 44% of total energy production to contribute towards sustainable economic growth for the country in the long run.”

The plan outlines significant cuts to carbon emissions, an increase in clean energy use and to promote overall energy efficiency. Dr Ioannou, whose research focuses on sustainability, explained: “The importance of national institutions in promoting a long-term sustainable future and environmentally responsible behaviour by corporates cannot be overemphasized. In fact, research suggests that nation-level institutions are key drivers of corporate environmental performance.

“The UAE plan is undoubtedly a solid step in the right direction. It represents a public commitment by the government and hence, reduces potential uncertainties regarding future energy policy. At the same time, this reduction in uncertainty combined with the long-term time horizon of the plan is likely to attract sustainable long-term investments in domains such as renewable energy and energy efficiency solutions.

“It is also important to note that the announcement of the plan represents a strong commitment to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by the UAE. It establishes the framework and the context for companies and other entities to set up operations that are consistent with the principles of sustainable economic growth.”

Dr Ioannou concluded: “Of course, it will be challenging for a country so heavily reliant and invested in hydrocarbon energy to leverage its extensive experience and unique skills to build an economy based on a diversified mix of predominantly clean energy sources. The devil is often in the details, and organizational change is always difficult. Yet it certainly helps, and is commendable, when institutions are put in place to enable a transition to a more sustainable future.”

استراتيجية الإمارات للطاقة 2050 تستقطب استثمارات مستدامة طويلة الأمد

25 يناير 2017، دبي، الإمارات العربية المتحدة: أشار خبير من كلية لندن للأعمال إلى أن وجود خطة استراتيجية طويلة الأمد للطاقة سيعزز من قيام الاستثمارات المستدامة طويلة الأمد في دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة.

وكانت حكومة الإمارات قد كشفت هذا الشهر عن إطلاقها خطة استراتيجية للطاقة لمدة ثلاثة عقود، وتهدف الخطة إلى تحقيق وفورات كبيرة للدولة تقدر بمليارات الدراهم مع الحفاظ في الوقت نفسه على استدامة النمو الاقتصادي. وصممت هذه الخطة لتحقيق التوازن بين الأهداف البيئية وتلبية الاحتياجات الاقتصادية للبلاد.

وتعليقاً على خطة الطاقة الجديدة، قال يوانيس يوانو، البروفيسور المساعد في الاستراتيجية وريادة الأعمال لدى كلية لندن للأعمال: "يتمثل الهدف الرئيسي لاستراتيجية الإمارات للطاقة 2050 في رفع نسبة الطاقة النظيفة إلى 44 بالمائة من إجمالي إنتاج الطاقة للمساهمة في النمو الاقتصادي المستدام للدولة على المدى الطويل".

وتضع الاستراتيجية خطة للحد من الانبعاثات الكربونية بشكلٍ كبير وزيادة الاعتماد على الطاقة النظيفة وتعزيز الكفاءة الإجمالية للطاقة. وأوضح الدكتور يوانو، الذي تركز أبحاثه على الاستدامة: "تلعب المؤسسات الوطنية دور بالغ الأهمية في بناء مستقبل مستدام على المدى الطويل وتعزيز سلوك مسؤول بيئياً للشركات. وفي الواقع، تشير البحوث إلى أن المؤسسات الوطنية تمثل عوامل رئيسية في دفع الأداء البيئي للشركات".

وأضاف: "ليس هناك شك في أن خطة دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة هي خطوة قوية في الاتجاه الصحيح، وتمثل التزاماً علنياً من قبل الحكومة مما يقلل من الشكوك المحتملة المتعلقة بسياسة الطاقة في المستقبل. وفي الوقت نفسه، من المرجح أن يستقطب هذا الازدياد في الثقة مصحوباً بالأفق الزمني طويل الأمد للخطة الاستثمارات المستدامة على المدى الطويل في عدد من المجالات مثل حلول كفاءة الطاقة والطاقة المتجددة".

وأردف البروفيسور: "وتجدر الإشارة إلى أن الإعلان عن الخطة يمثل التزاماً قوياً من الإمارات العربية المتحدة بأهداف التنمية المستدامة للأمم المتحدة. كما أنه يرسم ملامح الطريق وإطار العمل أمام الشركات والكيانات الأخرى لإنشاء عمليات متسقة مع مبادئ النمو الاقتصادي المستدام".

واختتم الدكتور ايوانو: "بطبيعة الحال، لن يكون الأمر سهلاً بالنسبة لدولة تعتمد وتستثمر بصورة كبيرة في مجال الطاقة الهيدروكربونية أن تستفيد من خبراتها الواسعة وقدراتها الفريدة لبناء اقتصاد قائم على مزيج متنوع من مصادر الطاقة النظيفة. وعلى الرغم من أن العقبات غالباً ما تكمن في التفاصيل إضافةً إلى الصعوبات التقليدية التي تواجه عمليات التغيير المؤسسي، فإن توظيف المؤسسات بشكل مناسب لتمكين الانتقال إلى مستقبل أكثر استدامة هو أمر هام بكل تأكيد ويستحق الثناء والتقدير".
