Open source tool will help drive emission reduction

A new research project seeks to develop a tool to identify and reduce carbon in the construction supply chain. The project is a collaboration between the University of Edinburgh Business School and Costain Group and is funded by the Construction Climate Challenge (CCC) initiative hosted by Volvo Construction Equipment.
The Carbon Infrastructure Transformation Tool project (CITT) started from the need to solve two key problems facing the construction industry - the pressing need to reduce GHG emissions, and the highly fragmented nature of supply chains.
“In large infrastructure projects there are large amounts of emissions at stake. The supply chain is also very fragmented, with many different stakeholders. It’s important to ensure we have a consensus across the whole chain to reduce emissions,” says Dr Matthew Brander, Lecturer at University of Edinburgh Business School and Project Manager for CITT.
The research project seeks to develop and implement a tool that will help construction companies identify and reduce carbon. It will pinpoint opportunities to reduce carbon through innovation and supply chain engagement. It will also enhance the amount of communication and dialogue across the supply chain.
“The tool will be integrated into current pricing processes and will allow us to have carbon and cost together. It will put the data in the hands of the right people at the right time in contractors’ processes which will allow them to make decisions to significantly reduce carbon. It will also push carbon further back towards the start of the design processes,” says Damien Canning, Head of Technical Sustainability at Costain Group and Industry Specialist for Carbon Management for CITT.
The project is running for three years and the research will focus on carbon accounting methodologies, stakeholder engagement and social barriers to tool adoption, collaborative frameworks for efficient supply chain management, and decision analytics for project design under uncertainty. As the research is undertaken it will feed back into the development of the tool.
There will be close collaboration between the researchers and the construction industry and live tests have been set up with real infrastructure projects. These will take place throughout the project.
“The way to really drive this is to develop something with as much input from the industry as possible. This will help to raise standards significantly, and ensure consistency across the industry,” says Damien Canning.
After the project is finished the open source tool will be publicly available and free to use, to enhance the possibility for it to be used by as many as possible.
“The key is to get the industry to use this tool. Therefore it has to be accessible and easy to understand. You can develop the best tool in the world but if the stakeholders don’t want to use it, it’s not going to have much impact,” says Dr Matthew Brander.

Electronic Shelf Labelling Set to Take Over Regional Retail

Leading suppliers see a significant rise in inquiries for ESLs from regional retailers

Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Electronic Shelf Labels (ESLs) are entering the region with a big promise of saving on both operations and energy costs in the retail sector. A global forecast report by market research firm Knowledge Sourcing Intelligence, revealed that global market for Electronic Shelf Label Market will grow from US$211.134 million in 2015 to US$441.440 million by 2021, at a CAGR of 13.08% over the forecast period.

According to experts in the retail sector, ESLs will be a key link in the retail technology chain. These labels use e-paper as its display component; it is an advanced version of segmented e-paper displays. The ESL links the product price to the centralised store server and enables retailers to remotely change the price of the products, allowing real-time product positioning and an interactive in-store environment. The major benefit of these labels is energy efficiency and its ability to project graphical objects such as logos and callouts that help in real-time product positioning. Changing all the prices in a normal sized hypermarket takes 5 to 10 days, but with ESL it can be done within minutes and without any errors.

“ESLs are the perfect starting point for regional retailers, looking into providing smarter store environment. It also opens the opportunity to provide additional information such as place of origin and discounts. Though ESLs are a relatively new concept in the region, we have seen a significant growth in inquiries from retailers, since we launched the solution in the region,” says Monesh Rughwani, Managing Director, Nirsun Technology.

He added, “In addition to ESL, we have something new called ISL (Interactive Shelf Labels) that facilitates interaction between the label, employees and the customers. Traditional ESL systems are designed to push information to a screen describing the product and the price dynamically. The interactive labels are the next step, enabling not only a dynamic display for information to the customer and employees but it also allows interaction between the label, employees and customers. We believe, this level of interaction will open up a whole new range of possibilities to retailers around the world.”

However, the ideal scenario for a future brick and mortar store is a tightly integrated system that consists of ESL, smartphone applications, beacons, indoor location, mobile payments, digital loyalty coupons, customer analytics, and omnichannel marketing and pricing.

“Shoppers in the region are increasingly demanding interactive and real-time information, hence, technologies like ESL are gaining popularity. With more number of retailers using technology to improve customer experience, drive revenue, and streamline the entire shopping experience, physical shopping experience is expected to evolve further,” said Jayaraman Nair, Chairman, VIS Exhibitions and Conferences, which is organising Smart Stores Expo 2017 in January.
The event will provide the exhibitors with an ideal platform to launch, showcase, and present their latest innovations, services and products; along with meeting industry peers, building brand awareness and meeting prospective clients.  The exhibitors and visitors will be sharing latest trends in the retail industry, both regionally and global.

The event will be held from 23-25th January 2017, at ADNEC (Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company).

We have strengthened our position as a key player of Qatar’s domestic hospitality industry; and our continuing expansion overseas is establishing Katara Hospitality as an internationally recognised leader in the global luxury hospitality sector. Our ongoing renovation plans and investment programme also leave us well placed for further growth in 2017 and beyond,” he added.

Hamad Abdulla Al-Mulla, Chief Executive Officer of Katara Hospitality said: “We remain committed to the further development and expansion of our portfolio, and 2016 was an important stage in that process.  We now turn our attention to 2017 as we expect to complete a range of initiatives that will take us closer to our target of 60 properties by 2026.”

2016 Achievements - Domestic
Simaisma, a Murwab Resort, opened its doors to the public in January, unveiling an exciting new destination for local guests and global travelers visiting Qatar. The property is owned by Simaisma Resort Company W.L.L, and managed by Murwab Hotel Group, Katara Hospitality’s standalone operating division.

In support of Katara Hospitality’s efforts towards Qatarisation, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed with Qatar University in April to encourage young Qatari nationals to take a keen interest in exploring Qatar’s hospitality industry. Most recently, Katara Hospitality announced the Tahseen Hospitality training programme in partnership with Marriott International to boost career opportunities for Qatari Youth in response to the need for Qatari leaders within the industry. This initiative furthers Katara Hospitality’s commitment to investing in the development of local youth and the evolution of the hospitality industry in Qatar.

To showcase the rich Arabian hospitality and Qatari heritage, Katara Hospitality announced a food and beverage initiative, Katara Specialties, at the Arabian Travel Market in May. The concept serves to create authentic Qatari cuisine mystique within all of Katara Hospitality’s local and international hotels, characterised by signature dishes that exhibit the flavoursome warmth of Qatari Cuisine.

Demonstrating its commitment to social responsibility and sustainability, Katara Hospitality introduced the Hotel Park in May, a new family-friendly public park in the heart of Doha’s bustling business district covering 80,000 square meters of park space with over 34,500 square meters of green space.              It provides residents and visitors with a relaxing escape and includes play areas, spectacular water features, a fitness zone and video wall among other amenities. Hotel Park also offers four levels of underground public parking, over 2,500 car spaces in total, with access to Doha International Exhibition Center through an underground tunnel link.

In October, Qatar’s first leisure destination Sealine Beach, a Murwab Resort, welcomed its guests and families to its exquisite facilities, following the anticipated renovation that culminated in the unveiling of a completely remodeled leisure destination for local and international tourists. The project entailed a full refurbishment of all 77 of the resort’s existing guest units, villas, and chalets as well as the development of an additional 18 family-style villas, which are located along the remaining stretch of the resort’s beach and expected to be completed early this year. A significant Renovation is also ongoing at The Ritz-Carlton, Doha to ensure the property continues to offer guests quintessential Arabian 5-star hospitality. The three-phased renovation, which includes all guest rooms and suites, F&B outlets and the Spa, is expected to be completed by mid-2017.
2016 Achievements – International
In February, Katara Hospitality marked the successful partnership between world renowned Chef Nobu Matsuhisa and Le Royal Monceau – Raffles Paris, at an illustrious event held at Matsuhisa Paris; a Japanese fine dining restaurant and the newest addition at Le Royal Monceau. The presence there of such a restaurant, whose chef shares the same values of excellence and perfection as Katara Hospitality, personifies its broader commitment to luxury service and superior product offering.

In August, The Peninsula Paris was granted the highly prestigious ‘Palace’ distinction by ATOUT France, the French Tourism Development Agency. The historic hotel, which sits in the heart of Paris, just steps from the Arc de Triomphe, became the eighth hotel in Paris to receive the accolade and the second Katara Hospitality-owned hotel after Le Royal Monceau – Raffles Paris was honoured with the status in 2010. Hotels with the ‘Palace’ distinction exhibit extraordinary service standards and design aesthetic, exceeding the five-star ranking.

In September, Katara Hospitality unveiled the legendary Hotel Royal Savoy Lausanne in Switzerland, in a grand opening ceremony signifying the hotel’s official opening after an ambitious remodeling exercise that restored the hotel to its historic charm. The iconic hotel is the second hotel to open under The Bürgenstock Selection in Switzerland, a collection of luxurious hotels which fall under Murwab Hotel Group, Katara Hospitality’s standalone operating arm.

Dating from 1909, this legendary hotel has added to the luster of Lausanne’s fame as a refuge for royalty and aristocrats from around the world. The hotel is located in the heart of the city of Lausanne and overlooks Lac Lèman. The reopening of the hotel revives the property’s more than one hundred-year old history.  Spread over 5,000 square meters, the hotel is a city oasis and opens a new chapter in the history of the hotel.

In line with its strategy to preserve the heritage of unique hotels around the world, in October 2016 Katara Hospitality announced the restoration of the acclaimed Raffles Singapore. The refurbishment of the hotel, which was originally opened in 1887, will start in February 2017, and will be conducted over three phases to be completed by 2018.

Awards
Katara Hospitality has received numerous prestigious accolades for its continued contribution to the Qatari and global luxury hospitality landscape, including; “Hospitality Company of the Year” within the Arabian Business Qatar Awards, “Middle East’s Leading Hospitality Development Company” for the third consecutive year at the World Travel Awards in May, “Remarkable & Exceptional Achievement in the Luxury Hospitality Industry” award for the second consecutive year by Seven Star Luxury Hospitality
& Lifestyle Awards in October. Rounding out 2016, Katara Hospitality was named the “World’s Leading Hospitality Company” for the fourth consecutive year at the annual World Travel Awards ceremony in December.

It intends to expand this through a considered and highly strategic programme of development and investment in the highest quality hotels in Qatar while growing a collection of iconic hotels in key markets across the globe.
