50th Anniversary of United Nations Industrial Development Organization

B-Roll and voiced news package available NOW from Reuters & markettiers

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) celebrates its 50th anniversary this week as experts, policy makers and government representatives from across the world gather at the organization’s Vienna headquarters to discuss its future work.

Formed in November 1966, the specialist agency, which assists developing and middle income countries achieve sustainable industrial development, has been the driver behind thousands of successful initiatives to improve the lives of millions of the world’s poor.

In 2016 UNIDO has 839 ongoing projects across the world worth a total of almost US$1.2 billion. These initiatives aim to share prosperity in communities and increase their economic competitiveness while safeguarding the local environment.

Looking to the future, UNIDO’s Director General, Li Yong says that the organization can help to create jobs and conditions which might prevent future refugee crises, “Our piloting programme, Programme for Country Partnership, supporting African countries, Ethiopia, Senegal, to focus on the industrial parks, special economic zones and agro-industrial parks are generating thousands of jobs which will help resolve the issue of refugees, migrations and at the same time in the long run supporting poverty elevation in the region."

Other attendees in Vienna include the Crown Prince of Bahrain, the Chairman of the Bank of China Tian Guoli, President of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank Jin Liqun and the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov.

Liqun says his bank, along with UNIDO, would continue to push for industrial development whilst also improving the environment, “First of all, we embrace the noble cause and great cause of inclusive and sustainable development. This is crucially important for so many developing countries on the way to industrialization and development for all. What's most important is that we are not going to follow the beaten track of the western countries in the previous centuries. We aim at industrialization at a high level, which means we will improve the environment and development at the same time."

Gatilov says how UNIDO’s work can help prevent the conditions in which terrorism can arise and he hopes the new incoming U.S. government would also devote more attention to organizations like the UN and UNIDO
.
Another major topic is female economic empowerment. The Egyptian Minister of International Cooperation, Sahar Nasr, said women need equal rights, equal opportunities and should be given every opportunity to contribute to the economic sphere.

UNIDO is not a funding agency. Typically it implements pilot projects with funds from donors, then finds partners to either fund the next phase or take UNIDO’s approach and replicate it. For example, in the early 1990s the organization developed a multi-functional platform to generate energy in remote areas that were not connected to national electricity grids. Within a few years the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the UN Development Programme had replicated the model in 3,000 villages across Africa.

UNIDO has also developed a new type of assistance: the Programme for Country Partnership, a custom-built package for each country which brings key stakeholders together. In Ethiopia, for example, the agency worked on the feasibility of an industrial park. The World Bank contributed US$250 million funding. UNIDO then continued to provide operational support for the park.

Three examples of successful UNIDO projects from the last decade are:

Côte d’Ivoire – providing clean, sustainable energy
UNIDO has helped build seven solar power stations in the Zanzan region bringing clean, affordable and sustainable power, so allowing everyone to share in the benefits of industrialization.

Mali - shea butter exports bring female economic empowerment
This project has helped women in poor, remote areas of Mali produce and export tonnes of organic shea butter for further processing in Europe. The skills learnt by the women have helped reduce poverty, enabled their children to go to school and have opened up international trade not just to this women’s co-operative but to Mali as a whole.

Sierra Leone - food security for farmers
One of the biggest challenges that farmers face in Africa is finding somewhere to sell their products at a fair price. In Sierra Leone, high transport costs and poor infrastructure mean that farmers are forced to sell their goods locally but with no guarantee they’ll find buyers at local markets for cassava, a staple root vegetable. UNIDO projects have helped farmers get a guaranteed place to sell their produce beyond their localities, so increasing their income.

UNIDO – statistics and websites and statistics
Extensive information is available on UNIDO’s open data platform: https://open.unido.org/index.html and from UNIDO’s main website:https://www.unido.org/

Countries with the most current UNIDO projects are China (29), Tanzania (22), India (21), Ethiopia (20) Nigeria (19), Egypt (17), South Africa (17), Morocco (13), Tunisia (12) and Turkey (12).
The five countries providing the most funding to UNIDO’s current projects are Switzerland (US$55m), Japan (US$36m), Italy (US$29m), Sweden (US$28m) and Norway (US$20m).

9 Simple Security Steps to Stay Safe Online During the Holidays

Spokes person: James Lyne, Global Head of Security Research, Sophos

“The holidays are a heightened time when cybercriminals are using clever phishing emails scams that look like special offers or shipping notices for gifts. When in reality, these are designed to snare clicks and make you hand over information. Sophos is reminding consumers to pay extra attention to nine simple security steps to stay safe online during the holidays:

1.       If an online deal or email offer with price discounts looks too good to be true, it probably is. Hit delete.
2.       Be aware of untrusted wireless networks when you’re out shopping with your mobile phone. Consider waiting to enter your credit card information when you get home.
3.       Only use trusted merchants to make online payments. Use PayPal or your credit card, not bank debit cards to purchase gifts online.
4.       Be on the lookout for Typosquatting. Cybercriminals take a popular online brand and change one letter or two to trick you into clicking and sharing personal information.
5.       IoT devices are sure to be on everyone’s list this year, but they are vulnerable to cybercriminals. Before you start using your newfangled device, reset the password. Some, as we’ve recently see with Dyn DDoS attack, are vulnerable to criminal-hacker hijacking.
6.       Be sensible about password security. Make account passwords different and difficult to guess. Include upper and lower case letters, numbers and symbols to make passwords harder to crack - refer to the Sophos How to Pick a Proper Password video for creating stronger passwords.
7.       Cybercriminals intercept data with spyware more than usual during the holidays. Protect against all malware, including spyware, which logs your financial data while you type it into your keyboard, with security software like Sophos Home. Of 1,250 consumers polled in the U.S., U.K., Germany, Switzerland and Austria in a recent Sophos survey, 54 percent perceive spyware as an extremely large cyber security threat. Thirty-one percent of those surveyed consider themselves unprotected, are not familiar with spyware or unsure if they’re protected.
8.       Run up to date security software and check out the Sophos Home toolkit videos for tips on blocking spyware and all other malware, detecting and blocking malicious URLs and apps, which could contain ransomware, securing wifi, and ruling out phishy emails.
9.      At a time of higher than normal e-commerce, criminals have a piqued interest in exploiting online activity. Consumers need to be extra vigilant to protect against cybercriminals who amp up their nefarious ways during the holidays. Be cyber aware and use best security practices.”

Telia Carrier investigates why Sweden has successfully bred so many unicorns

Stockholm, Sweden – 10 November 2016 – In a four episode ‘mockumentary’ series, entitled ‘Unicorn Syndrome’ (http://unicornsyndrome.com/), Telia Carrier investigates a number of possible theories about why Sweden, and Stockholm in particular, has become a unicorn superpower.
Based on the number of unicorns per capita that it has produced, Stockholm is ranked as the number two startup region in the world after Silicon Valley. This is a remarkable achievement in itself but the big question is: Why? With an element of humor, the films highlight the important roles solid internet infrastructure and good connectivity play in a flourishing Internet startup community. In addition, they aim to encourage other cities, countries and companies to provide people and business with access to the fiber and services that will allow them to build our connected future.
‘Disruption used to be a dirty word, but today it’s a badge of honor. Connectivity changed everything and continues to do so on a daily basis. On our journey towards becoming a top-two global IP backbone, we have provided many startups with connectivity - indeed some of our first start-up customers are household names today. We therefore wanted to investigate some of the reasons why Swedish start-ups have been so successful. Additionally, we wanted to discover what happens when the limits of connectivity are removed. Could we unlock even greater ideas and innovation? So together with Cisco, we put the SUP46 start-up hub directly on our global Internet backbone and connected them with 100Gb/s, for innovation without boundaries.’ says Mattias Fridström, Chief Evangelist at Telia Carrier.
In the first part of a recent study published by The Stockholm School of Economics and the Internet Foundation In Sweden (IIS), it is suggested that Sweden’s exceptionally fertile breeding ground for startups has developed through a combination of different factors over time. These include a particularly favorable business climate, fueled by a highly developed formal and informal network of entrepreneurs, experienced business people, politicians and university researchers - all within the Stockholm area.
‘Stockholm tends to command 15% of the total foreign direct investment in the European technology sector. Stockholm is also a high technology city. The study in 2014 noted above   reported that in Stockholm alone there are more than 22,000 technology companies and that 18% of the city's workforce is employed in technology-related roles with the most popular job being a programmer’ says Michael Gromek, FinTech researcher at the Stockholm School of Economics.
The second part of this study is scheduled for publication at the end of 2016.
In anticipation of that, we would like to further the discussion and encourage others to join in. In doing so, we hope to discover the reasons why Stockholm has grown into a world leading unicorn factory.
Telia Carrier’s global fiber backbone has grown organically, without acquisitions, and is the first to be 100G-enabled in both Europe and North America. It is also the first network to successfully transmit 1 Tb/s on its US network. According to Dyn Research’s global backbone rankings, AS1299, Telia Carrier’s global IP backbone is currently ranked top-two. Telia Carrier’s rapid growth and ascension through the rankings was recently highlighted in Dyn’s ‘Baker’s Dozen, 2015 edition’ report. The company enables worldwide connectivity by connecting more than 200 Points of Presence (PoPs) across Europe, North America, Asia, and the Middle East including over 70 PoPs in North America alone.
