The Mercurys, the world’s most influential awards in travel catering, to take place on 5th December in Abu Dhabi as the value of in-flight catering set to reach US$18 billion by 2020; winners will be announced at glittering gala dinner at Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat al Beri

SIAL 2016, the region’s fastest-growing professional trade exhibition for the food, beverage and hospitality industries, will return to Abu Dhabi where it will once again host the world’s leading supply companies to the airline catering sector, during the 35th edition of The Mercurys.

SIAL, under the patronage of HH Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister of the UAE, Minister of Presidential Affairs and Chairman of Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority, is taking from 5-7 December 2016 at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC).

The awards will be taking place at a glittering gala dinner on 5th December at Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat al Beri in Abu Dhabi, with the awards an integral part of the 7th edition of SIAL Middle East 2016.

“The Mercurys were launched in 1982 and are designed to recognise and reward innovation within the travel food industry, they are among the most sought after accolade for those in the airline catering business,” said Thamer Al Qasemi, chairman of the organising committee of SIAL Middle East 2016. “Judged by a panel of independent experts, the awards recognise the very best in on-board catering with five main award categories spanning airline meals, service, general on-board food and beverages and equipment.”

Companies competing at this year’s event include Green Gourmet Ltd., German Bakery Company GmbH, Kaelis Onboard Services, RMT Global Partners, Perth Inflight Catering, Emirates Modern Poulty Co LLC and Monty’s Bakehouse, amongst others.

Research by Global Industry Analysts has attributed the growth in air passenger traffic and new effervescent service innovations by airline companies as the driving force behind an annual 5% growth. This growth is set to result in growth of the global inflight catering industry to US$18 billion by 2020.

The Middle East is forecast to grow strongly (by 4.9%) with an extra 237 million passengers a year on routes to, from and within the region according to the International Air Transport Association. The UAE, Qatar and Saudi Arabia will experience robust growth of 5.6%, 4.8%, and 4.6% respectively with a total market size of 383 million passengers.

Speaking ahead of the event, head judge, chef, airline catering consultant and writer, Jeremy Clark said:

أبوظبي تستضيف حفل توزيع جوائز "ميركوريز" المرموقة ضمن معرض سيال الشرق الأوسط 2016

يستضيف معرض سيال الشرق الأوسط 2016، الحدث المتخصص في مجال الأغذية والمشروبات والضيافة، الشهر المقبل مجموعة كبيرة من أبرز الشركات الرائدة في مجال تموين السفر على مستوى العالم مع عودة الدورة الـ 35 لجوائز "ميركوريز" المرموقة مجدداً إلى مدينة أبوظبي.

وقد أشار تقرير متخصص إلى أن نمو حجم حركة السفر العالمية بالإضافة إلى الابتكارات الجديدة لشركات الطيران في مجال الخدمة يمثل أهم العوامل الرئيسية لتحقيق معدل نمو سنوي يبلغ 5٪. ومن المتوقع أن يسهم هذا النمو في ارتفاع قيمة قطاع تموين السفر العالمي لتصل إلى 18 مليار دولار بحلول عام 2020.

ومن المتوقع أن تشهد منطقة الشرق الأوسط نمواً بنسبة 4.9٪ مع توقعات بتسجيل 237 مليون مسافر إضافي سنوياً من المنطقة وداخلها، وذلك وفقاً لبيانات اتحاد النقل الجوي الدولي. وستشهد دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة وقطر والمملكة العربية السعودية نمواً قوياً بنسبة 5.6٪ و4.8٪ و4.6٪ مع وصول إجمالي حجم السوق إلى 383 مليون مسافر.

من جانبه قال جيريمي كلارك، الطاهي والكاتب والمستشار في مجال خدمات تموين قطاع السفر، ورئيس لجنة تحكيم جوائز "ميركوريز": "تعتبر دول مجلس التعاون الخليجي من أهم المناطق على مستوى العالم في مجال توسع قطاع الطيران والابتكار؛ كما ستشهد المنطقة مزيداً من الارتفاع في أعداد المسافرين بالإضافة إلى التوسع في حجم أسطول وشبكات الناقلات الإقليمية، وهذا ما يساهم بالتالي في تعزيز الطلب على خدمات تقديم الطعام على متن الطائرات، والارتقاء بمكانة هذه السوق كوجهة جذابة للعديد من مصنعي المواد الغذائية".

Three NYU Students Selected as Rhodes Scholars

Two students from NYU Abu Dhabi and one from NYU’s Global Liberal Studies Program have been named as 2017 Rhodes Scholars

Abu Dhabi, November 23, 2016: Two seniors from NYU Abu Dhabi, Dubai Abulhoul (UAE) and Guillaume Sylvain (Canada), and Melissa Godin (Canada), a senior in NYU’s Global Liberal Studies Program have been selected as 2017 Rhodes Scholars. The prestigious international award allows exceptional students to pursue two to three years of postgraduate studies at the University of Oxford in England.

Abulhoul, from the UAE, is majoring in political science and is currently researching the effect of gender roles and culture on political participation in her home country as part of her senior capstone project. She is a member of the Emirates Youth Council, a government initiative aiming to develop government strategies to keep up with youth trends, identify challenges facing today’s youth, and to ensure participation of youth in UAE public affairs.

In 2012, she authored Galagolia: The Hidden Divination, a best-selling Emirati fantasy novel that made her the UAE’s youngest published author. Abulhoul, who has interned at the UAE Embassy in Washington D.C., later received the 2014 Arab Woman Award for Young Talent of the Year in recognition of her book[JD1] .

"I am very grateful to be chosen as a Rhodes Scholar to represent both my country and university at the University of Oxford next year. I wouldn't have been able to do it without the support and kindness of all the people who helped and encouraged me throughout the application process, as well during the preparations for the final interview. I aim to, in the best of my abilities, live up to the trust that has been given to me by the members of the Selection Committee as I join the Rhodes community next October. I look forward to pursuing an MsC in Diplomacy and Global Governance, and using that knowledge to one represent my country's overarching, global narrative abroad." Dubai said.

Sylvain, from Quebec, has become immersed in the Arabic language and the Middle East, majoring in NYU Abu Dhabi’s interdisciplinary Arab Crossroads program and minoring in Arabic language and political science. His capstone research which looks at how secondary school textbooks work to instill a set of shared values and a sense of Emirati historical national consciousness in a young nation where its citizens (UAE nationals) are a distinct minority.

He also serves as the chairperson for NYU Abu Dhabi student organization AD-vocacy and as an Arabic translator and crewmember with Refugee Rescue UK in their international rescue efforts in Lesbos Island, Greece. Sylvain, who has interned at the Embassy of Canada in the UAE and at Hedayah, an International Center for Countering Violent Extremism based in the UAE, plans to pursue MPhil in Modern Middle Eastern Studies at Oxford.

“I am deeply humbled by the opportunity to represent both my home province of Quebec and NYU Abu Dhabi as I join the Rhodes community in Oxford. The process was challenging at times, but it was incredibly inspiring to meet other engaged students from across the country. At Oxford, I intend on continuing my studies of the Middle East and reflecting on ways that communities across the region and beyond can find coexistence where today there is conflict and polarization.  Being a student at NYU Abu Dhabi has enabled me not only to study cross-cultural differences, but to experience them and to think about ways to make our community more whole. I am immensely grateful for the support NYU Abu Dhabi has provided me not only throughout this process, but since my first days in Sama tower. I hope to honor the efforts of all those who shouldered me in this process, from family and friends, to professors and mentors, as I prepare for this thrilling adventure.” Guillaume said.

Established in 1902 by the will of the late British businessman Cecil Rhodes, the Rhodes Scholarship is one of the world's oldest and most recognizable awards for international fellowship and academic study. Applicants are selected in a two-stage process that includes endorsement by their college or university, followed by in-person interviews.

This award marks the seventh and eighth Rhodes Scholars from NYU Abu Dhabi in four years.

Godin, who was born in Montreal and was raised in Vancouver, has created a concentration in politics, human rights, and sustainable development. Her NYU thesis examines the value of volunteer tourism, arguing that it needs to be restructured if it is to truly support development. As part of her project, she has researched orphanage tourism in Cambodia.

23 نوفمبر 2016 – أبوظبي، الإمارات العربية المتحدة: أعلنت جامعة نيويورك أبوظبي عن حصول اثنان من طلابها المقبلين على التخرج، وهما الإماراتية دبي أبوالهول والكندي غويلايوم سلفين، على المنحة الدراسية العالمية المرموقة رودس للعام 2017، ، والتي تتيح الفرصة للطلبة المتفوقين بمتابعة الدراسات العليا في جامعة أكسفورد البريطانية. وتعد هاتين المنحتين هما السابعة والثامنة من منح رودس المقدمة لطلاب جامعة نيويورك أبوظبي خلال أربع سنوات فقط. وبالإضافة إلى ذلك، حصلت الكندية ميليسا غودين من برنامج الدراسات الليبرالية العالمية في جامعة نيويورك على هذه المنحة.

وتتخصص الطالبة الإماراتية دبي أبوالهول في قسم العلوم السياسية، حيث تقوم في الوقت الحالي بأبحاثها المتخصصة حول تأثير النوع والثقافة على المشاركة السياسية في دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة، وذلك كجزء من مشروع تخرجها. كما تشارك دبي كعضو في مجلس الإمارات للشباب، وهو مبادرة حكومية تهدف إلى تعزيز استراتيجيات الحكومة لمواكبة توجهات الشباب والتعرف على التحديات التي تواجه شباب اليوم، بالإضافة إلى ضمان مشاركتهم في إدارة الشؤون العامة في الدولة.

علاوة على ذلك، قامت دبي أبو الهول في عام 2012 بتأليف رواية "غالاغوليا: التنبؤ الخفي" والتي تعتبر من الروايات الأكثر مبيعاً في دولة الإمارات، مما جعل منها أصغر مؤلفة وكاتبة في الدولة. وقد تلقت دبي في وقت سابق جائزة المرأة العربية للعام 2014 عن فئة المواهب الشابة تقديراً لكتابها.

وفي تعليق لها على حصولها على هذه المنحة، قالت دبي: "أنا ممتنة للغاية لحصولي على منحة رودس، حيث سأقوم بتمثيل وطني وجامعتي في جامعة أكسفورد العام القادم، ولم أكن لأتمكن من تحقيق هذا النجاح بدون دعم جميع من ساندني في إجراءات التقديم على المنحة، وكذلك أثناء التحضير للمقابلة النهائية، الأمر الذي شجعني كثيراً وساعدني على المضي قدماً. وسوف أبذل قصارى جهدي مع بداية منحة رودس سبتمبر المقبل للارتقاء لمستوى ومحل ثقة اللجنة التي اختارتني للحصول على المنحة، وأتطلع قدماً لمتابعة دراسة الماجستير في الدبلوماسية والحوكمة العالمية، واستخدام خبرتي العلمية من أجل تمثيل وطني في المحافل الدولية".

أما عن الطالب الثاني، غويلايوم سلفين، فقد انغمس في منطقة الشرق الأوسط واللغة العربية الأصيلة ليتخصص في برنامج المفترق العربي في جامعة نيويورك أبوظبي مع تخصص فرعي في اللغة العربية والعلوم السياسية، وقد تمحورت أبحاثه الدراسية حول كيفية الاستفادة بشكل أمثل من مناهج المرحلة الدراسية الثانوية للعمل على غرس القيم والشعور الوطني والوعي المشترك لدى الأجيال الناشئة من مواطني دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة.

ويشغل سلفين منصب رئيس المنظمة الطلابية "أدفوكاسي – Ad-vocacy" لدى جامعة نيويورك أبوظبي، وهو مترجم محترف للغة العربية وعضو فريق إنقاذ اللاجئين في المملكة المتحدة، حيث شارك الفريق في جهود إنقاذ اللاجئين في جزيرة ليسبوس اليونانية. كما عمل سلفين بشكل مؤقت في السفارة الكندية لدى دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة، بالإضافة إلى عمله لدى مركز هداية، المركز الدولي لمكافحة العنف والتطرف في الدولة، وعقب حصوله على منحة رودس، يعتزم إكمال دراساته حول الشرق الأوسط الحديث في جامعة أكسفورد البريطانية.

وبهذه المناسبة، قال سلفين: "إنني فخور للغاية بتمثيل مدينتي في إقليم كيبيك الكندي وجامعة نيويورك أبوظبي وسط مجتمع الدارسين الحاصلين على منحة رودس المرموقة، لقد تخللت عملية التقديم مراحل صعبة في بعض الأحيان، ولكن مقابلة كافة الطلاب المتميزين الساعين للانضمام إلى هذه المنحة من جميع أنحاء العالم كان أمراً مُلهماً. وأسعى من خلال دراستي في جامعة أكسفورد إلى متابعة الدراسات حول منطقة الشرق الأوسط والمجتمعات المتعددة فيها، سعياً لإيجاد طريقة تصل من خلالها شعوب المنطقة إلى التعايش الكريم وإنهاء الصراعات القطبية." وأضاف سلفين: "لم تمكنني دراستي في جامعة نيويورك أبوظبي من تلقي العلم في بيئة تتميز بتنوع الثقافات والحضارات فحسب، وإنما ساعدتني على تجربة الاختلافات والتفاعل معها ومع المجتمعات المتعددة. إنني ممتن للغاية للدعم الذي منحته لي جامعة نيويورك أبوظبي، ليس فقط خلال عملية التقديم للحصول على المنحة، ولكن بداية من أول يوم دراسي لي بالجامعة في أبوظبي."

أما عن الطالبة الثالثة، ميليسا غودين، فقد قامت خلال دراساتها بالتركيز على السياسة وحقوق الإنسان والتنمية المستدامة، كما تناولت خلال أطروحتها الدراسية في جامعة نيويورك القيمة الحقيقية للسياحة التطوعية وأهمية إعادة بنائها لتقدم دعم ملموس للتنمية. وكجزء من برنامجها الدراسي، قامت غودين ببحث السياحة نحو الأيتام في كمبوديا.

تأسست منحة رودس في العام 1902 من قبل رجل الأعمال البريطاني الراحل سيسيل رودس، وتعد هذه المنحة واحدة من أقدم المنح الدراسية وأكثرها تميزاً من ناحية الزمالة الدولية والدراسات الأكاديمية حول العالم. ويتم اختيار المتقدمين خلال مرحلتين تبدأ بموافقة الجامعة التي يقوم فيها الطالب بالدراسة، تليها مرحلة المقابلات الشخصية.

For those unable to travel to Hong Kong and indulge in Langham Hospitality Group’s tantalising, Michelin-star-awarded restaurants during the Chinese New Year is celebrations, try this Peking duck recipe from three-Michelin-starred T’ang Court at The Langham, Hong Kong.  This dish will delight gourmands at dining tables anywhere in the world.

Peking Duck (北京片皮鴨)

Ingredients:

Beijing duck    

• 1 whole duck weight 2.8kg
• Ginger             50g (diced)
• Spring onion    50g (diced)
• Star anise         2 pieces

Marinade:

• Five-spice powder       15g
• Sea salt                        100 g

Glaze:

• Maltose            40g
• Red vinegar    100ml
• White vinegar  30ml

Serving sauce:

• Hoisin sauce

Serving condiments:

• Red pepper garnish, sliced cucumbers, Chinese pancakes

Method:

1.             Mix well marinades, ginger, spring onion and star anise
2.             Sprinkle the mixture in the cavity of the duck
3.             Seal the duck with a needle. Pour boiling water all over the duck to rinse
4.             Paint the glaze onto duck skin evenly; brush all over the duck inside and out
5.             Leave it for 6 hours until the skin is dry and taut
6.             Preheat the oven to 180°C
7.             Roast the duck under low heat for 75 minutes
8.             Rotate and turn the duck every 15 minutes
9.             Carve and slice the duck thinly. Serve with hoisin sauce, red pepper garnish, sliced cucumbers and the Chinese pancakes

Waseela begins Trial of Smart Indoor Navigation and Positioning Solutions

 Smart technology to prevent people from getting lost in mega venue

(Dubai, 23rdNovember, 2016) -  Waseela, the leading regional Telecommunications and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) system integrator, has begun testing smart indoor navigation and positioning systems. These systems would typically be deployed at mega venues in an attempt to prevent individuals from getting lost, to enrich the shopping experience or to make walking through an entertainment venue more enjoyable.

The Indoor Positioning Solutions are technologies that upgrade and complement the design of smart buildings. An effective smart building requires the integration of many solutions and technologies. These include building management systems that automatically monitor, control and regulate the power-consuming subsystems within a building, and park management systems, access security control, surveillance cameras and audio visual equipment that are connected and integrated by a unified wired and wireless IP network.   

“The task of setting up the systems that make a building smart is rather complex, and tedious requiring require detailed design and optimization engineering. Waseela assists in these endeavours, and serves developers and contractors by designing and integrating several systems from various suppliers. ان عملية تطوير المبنى الواحد وتحويله الى مبنىً ذكيا قد تستغرق فترة 6-9 أشهر لإنجازها، بداية من مرحلة التصميم إلى التنفيذ والتكليف تبعا لدرجة تعقيد المشروع وحجمه.

فاضاف البلعاوي " ان تصميم الحلول الذكية لأي مبنى يتطلب عدة جولات من المشاورات والموافقات من الجهات المعنية للتأكد من أن الأنظمة متوافقة مع مواصفات المبنى  بشكل عام وخاصة المدنية والكهروميكانيكية. وعلى هذا النحو، تتحدد درجة تعقيد المشروع وفترة العمل عليه لاستكماله، خاصة اذا تطلب تغيير بعض المواصفات المدنية والكهروميكانيكية والعامة في مراحل مختلفة من عملية التطوير. واضافة لذلك، هناك بعض الانظمة التي تتطلب موافقات من الجهات الحكومية مثل وزارة الداخلية وشرطة دبي،  وشركتي اتصالات و دو".
