Bart Leclercq to boost strategic client alliances
Based in Dubai, one of the most experienced and dynamic professionals in the Middle East’s construction and engineering sectors,Bart Leclercq has joined the company as Client Director, Global Partners. Leclercq will form strategic alliances with key global partners, harnessing synergies between organisations to deliver exciting projects around the world. A major part of his time will be dedicated to the Middle East, home of many spectacular, one-of-a-kind projects.
Leclercq will also use his experience and knowledge of the Middle East to provide strategic, design and technical leadership to Aurecon’s teams working on major projects around the region. His dedication to developing others will be channelled into educating, inspiring and motivating junior colleagues to achieve high standards of design quality, client service and project delivery.

Leclercq joins Aurecon from WSP, where he served as Senior Technical Director leading business development work in the Middle East. In this role he was involved in a number of landmark projects including One&Only The Palm, Dubai Trade Centre District, and City of Arabia.

Virtual currencies unlikely to crowd out fiat currencies, according to new research

New research from the SWIFT Institute assesses whether the global financial community is accepting Bitcoin as a valid currency
Brussels, 6 September 2016 – The SWIFT Institute has published a new research paper analysing whether Bitcoin will crowd out fiat currencies in the global community.
The paper, entitled “Virtual currencies: Media of exchange or speculative assets?”, looks at the dynamic relationship between virtual currencies, such as Bitcoin, and fiat currencies, and evaluates any immediate risks that virtual currencies pose to monetary, financial or economic stability. The research was conducted by Dirk G. Baur, UWA Business School, KiHoon Hong, Hongik University College of Business in South Korea and Adrian D. Lee, University of Technology Sydney (Australia).
Key Findings from the research include:
- Virtual currencies are unlikely to crowd out fiat currencies – The price impact of speculators in virtual currencies adversely affects their property as a medium of exchange and renders a crowding out of existing fiat currencies, such as the US dollar, unlikely.
- Bitcoin is mainly used as a speculative investment – An empirical analysis of Bitcoin prices and user accounts (wallets) supports the theoretical result and finds that Bitcoin is mainly used as a speculative investment rather than a medium of exchange.
- No correlation exists between Bitcoin and traditional asset classes – Bitcoin returns are uncorrelated with traditional asset classes such as stocks, bonds and commodities, both in normal times and during periods of financial turmoil.
- Virtual currencies pose no immediate macro risk – The design and the size of markets for virtual currencies such as Bitcoin do not pose an immediate risk for monetary, financial or economic stability.
“Contrary to conventional wisdom, our research shows that fiat currencies crowd out Bitcoin, not the reverse, and that the design and size of the Bitcoin market deprives the currency of its intended use as a medium of exchange,” says KiHoon Hong, Hongik University College of Business. “What is also evident is that Bitcoin poses minimal risk to financial or monetary stability. Despite this, if the acceptance of Bitcoin or other virtual currencies increases significantly on a global scale, it could have significant consequences on the relevance of monetary policy, as its decentralised and independent nature makes regulatory oversight difficult.”

بروكسل، 6 سبتمبر 2016 – نشر معهد "سويفت" ورقة بحثية جديدة تحلّل ما إذا كانت العملة الافتراضية المعروفة باسم "بت كوين" Bitcoin ستزاحم العملات الرسمية في العالم.
ويحلّل البحث الذي يحمل عنوان "العملات الافتراضية: وسيلة تبادل أم أصول مضاربة؟"، العلاقة الدينامية بين العملات الافتراضية مثل "بت كوين"، وبين العملات الرسمية، ويقيّم أية مخاطر آنيّة تشكّلها العملات الافتراضية على الاستقرار النقدي أو المالي أو الاقتصادي. وقد أجرى البحث ديرك ج. بور من كلية الأعمال في جامعة UWA وكيهون هونغ من كلية الأعمال في جامعة هونيغ في كوريا الجنوبية وادريان د. لي من جامعة التكونولوجيا في سيدني في أستراليا.
وجاء في أبرز النتائج التي توصل إليها البحث أنه من المستبعد أن تزاحم العملات الافتراضية العملات الرسمية. فوَقْع الأسعار للمضاربين في العملات الافتراضية يؤثر سلباً على خاصيتها كوسيلة للتداول حيث يصبح من المستبعد أن تزاحم العملات الرسمية الحالية مثل الدولار الأميركي. وقد ذكر البحث أيضاً أن عملة "بت كوين" تستخدم في الغالب كاستثمار للمضاربة. ويدعم التحليل التجريبي لأسعار "بت كوين" ولحسابات المستخدمين (المحافظ) هذه النتيجة النظرية، ويجد أن "بت كوين" تستخدم في الغالب كاستثمار للمضاربة بدلاً من وسيلة للتداول. كما استخلص البحث أنه لا يوجد علاقة متبادلة بين "بت كوين" وفئات الأصول التقليدية، حيث بيّن أن عائدات "بت كوين" لا ترتبط بعلاقة تبادلية مع فئات الأصول التقليدية مثل الأسهم والسندات والسلع في الأوقات الطبيعية وكذلك في فترات الاضطرابات المالية. وأخيراً وجد البحث أن العملات الافتراضية لا تشكل مخاطر جسيمة مباشرةن إذ ذكر أن تصميم وحجم أسواق العملات الافتراضية مثل "بت كوين"، لا تشكل خطراً مباشراً على الاستقرار النقدي أو المالي أو الاقتصادي.
يقول كيهون هونغ، من كلية الأعمال في جامعة هونيغ: "بخلاف الحكمة الشائعة، تُظهر أبحاثنا أن العملات الرسمية تزاحم ’بت كوين‘ وليس العكس وأن تصميم وحجم سوق ’بت كوين‘ يجرّد العملة من استخدامها المقصود كوسيلة للتداول. والأمر الذي يظهر جلياًّ أيضاً هو أن ’بت كوين‘ تشكل أقلّ خطر على الاستقرار المالي أو النقدي. وبالرغم من ذلك، إذا زاد تقبّل ’بت كوين‘ أو عملات افتراضية أخرى بشكل كبير على المستوى العالمي، قد يكون لذلك عواقب كبرى على صحة السياسة النقدية حيث أن طبيعتها اللامركزية والمستقلّة تجعل الرقابة التنظيمية عليها أمراً صعباً."

True to our tradition as a dedicated patron of the arts, since 2012, Le Bristol Paris, one of the pearls of Oetker Collection, has hosted special events featuring some of the most significant contemporary artworks in collaboration with curator Florence Parot. Several times a year, internationally renowned artists are invited to exhibit their works in Le Bristol's garden and bar. Shielded from the bustle of the city, these stylish spaces offer an original setting to showcase sculpture, installations and video art.
FIAC, a major international art fair now in its 43rd year, is held under the majestic glass roof of the Grand Palais, bringing together modern and contemporary art, emerging artists, designers and the most prestigious galleries in the world representing thousands of artists. This year, Le Bristol Paris will collaborate with FIAC, inviting Colombian artist Iván Argote to install a series of original sculptures in our garden and screen his videos in Le Bar du Bristol.
Born in Bogotá, Colombia, in 1983, Iván Argote settled in Paris in 2006. His work explores human behavior, how people relate to their environment, and our inextricable links to history, tradition, art, politics and power. Argote creates public installations including video, photographs and sculpture. Public monuments and statuary are recurring themes in his work, which questions the mechanisms of power and authority. Argote explores the city as a place of transformation and virtuality. At Le Bristol, the artist will bring his personal take on the lion, a major icon of Paris's monumental statuary, drawing inspiration from figures found at the Place de la République, Place Denfert-Rochereau, the Tuileries gardens and Pont Alexandre III. The artist will install sculptures of these powerful felines in our garden, all specially designed for the occasion and fabricated from reconstituted white stone mounted on multicolored pedestals in oxidized copper, some gilded with gold leaf. Le Bar du Bristol will simultaneously showcase Argote's video piece Blind Kittens, an animation featuring three imperial lion statues from different periods and regions – the Medici in Florence, the Beijing's Forbidden City and Babylon in Mesopotamia. The lions are seen playing with balls, reminiscent of the popular kitten videos found on the Internet.

This exhibition is presented by Florence Parot, head of the Centre Pompidou's New Media collection since 2004, where she co-organized the exhibition "Vintage Video," which traveled to the ZKM in Karlsruhe, Germany, the Beirut Art Center, Lebanon, and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, in Seoul, South Korea. Currently working on her PhD in the history of performance art, Parot teaches at the Sandberg Instituut in Amsterdam. In early 2016, she founded Artist Placement to support artists and help them explore new domains and host exhibitions.
