AUC TO HOST “BEYOND THE APP” CONFERENCE IN COOPERATION WITH STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEWYORK, CORTLAND


WHAT

The American University in Cairo (AUC) will host “Beyond the App” virtual conference in cooperation with The Department of Literacy at State University of New York (SUNY), Cortland in the period from November 5 to November 7, 2020. 

The fully digital conference is intended to expand the digital tools teachers might use, to make the most effective use of online literacy instruction and go additional steps ‘Beyond the App’. As a result of COVID-19 pandemic, teachers have been required to move much more quickly than they had planned to enact effective literacy learning in digital environments.  

.he conference will connect U.S. and Egyptian teachers of children particularly in grades 3 through 9 with literacy leaders around the globe. There will be more than 50 sessions for participants where they will hear from international experts from Egypt, the United States and Mauritius and engage them in discussion sharing their challenges and effective strategies.The organizers also will offer several sessions of the conference experience in Arabic as a service to the teachers in the national system in Egypt. 

Sessions over the three-day event include the following topics: 

  • Motivating Middle Grades Students Learning Virtually 

  • Learning and the Gradual Release of Responsibility Online 

  • Building Comprehension Through Guided Activity Online 

  • Word Work and Fluency Teaching in The Virtual Classroom. 

  • Anti-racist Online Literacies Teaching 

  • Teaching Middle-Grade Student to Write Online 


President Francis Ricciardone of the American University in Cairo will open the session on November 7 and the public will be invited to the event live stream. The President will also take questions on literacy and education topics from the participant audience.  


President Erik Bitterbaum from the State University of New York, Cortland will open the conference on November 5 and the public will be invited to his remarks via live stream. He will also take questions on literacy and education from the participant audience.  

There will be more than dozen featured presenters, including Thomas Wolsey, dean of the Graduate School of Education, AUC; Nance Wilson, professor of literacy and Literacy Department chair, SUNY Cortland; Amy Tondreau, Austin Peay State University; Armen Kassabian, Greenwich High School; Danny Brassel, CalStateTEACH and AUC, Doug Fisher, San Diego State University; Emily Howell, Clemson University; Jill Castek of University of Arizona;  Maha Bali, AUC and Yousra Abourehab, University of Arizona.
