IN THE CAIRO REVIEW NEW ISSUE: A SPECIAL REPORT ON THE MIDDLE EAST ENERGY FUTURES

March 20, 2018, Cairo – In the new issue of The Cairo Review of Global Affairs, writers discuss the region’s energy landscape and prospects for a post-oil future in a special report on ‘the Middle East Energy Futures’. The success of renewables - the world’s fastest growing energy source- in a region blessed with both, massive fossil fuel reserves, as well as wind and sun, will hinge on two key hurdles: financing and major economic reform, writes energy author Jeffrey Bell.

Energy historian Ellen R. Wald names the players vying for control of northern Iraq’s prize oilfields in “Kirkuk’s Oil Chessboard.” In “Russia’s New Energy Gamble,” Portugal’s former Secretary of State for European Affairs Bruno Maçães pegs the driver of Russia’s mounting ambitions for influence in the Middle East as primarily a bid to control the flow of oil and gas to Europe and East Asia. Dianne Sutherland lays out challenges and opportunities for Egypt’s energy industry, now and moving forward, in “Egypt Re-Energized: An Industry Report.”

The issue also includes an interview with former Egyptian Foreign Minister and Secretary General of the League of Arab States Amr Moussa on the way out of the region’s crises as well as his vision for a new regional order that includes Iran, Turkey and Israel. Moussa also commented on the Palestinian issue in light of President Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, as well as the importance of Egypt retrieving its regional role to curb Iran and Turkey’s ambitions.

Other essays in the issue tackle the topics of Saudi Arabia’s “Vision 2030” and what it will take to turn that into a reality, the deepening division between Saudi Arabia and Iran, the future of cinema in Egypt, the ongoing mediation efforts in the Libyan conflict, and the popularity of India’s prime minister.
