The Truecaller Insights MENA Report highlights local ecommerce data
Cairo,
Egypt – May 08, 2017: Truecaller, one of the leading
communication apps in the world, recently released a special Truecaller
Insights MENA report for Q4 2016, offering a data-driven perspective on the
ecommerce industry in the Middle East and North Africa.
The report is based on data aggregated
anonymously from incoming and outgoing calls to e-commerce services in selected
countries in the MENA region during the period October 1-December 31, 2016.
During that time, MENA region smartphone owners using Truecaller made or
received more than 41.6 million calls to or from an ecommerce company.
“Being data driven is an extremely
important trait for Truecaller, throughout our app lifetime we have discovered
and predicted amazing trends just through our internal statistics,” said Nami
Zarringhalam, co-founder & CSO at Truecaller. “Truecaller Insights aims to
provide relevant and data-driven reports about market trends. The insights come
from a mix of engineers, data scientists and marketers who put their heads
together to tell data stories in an interesting and informative way.”
The Truecaller Insights MENA report
reveals the ecommerce market is dominated by local players with Souq, Edaf3ly, Dubizzle/OLX
and Jumia leading the way. The majority of calls are being made to and from those
four companies: Souq, with 60% of the call volume had almost three-fold the number
of calls as the next largest player, Edfa3ly (16%), followed by Dubizzle/OLX
(15%) and Jumia (6%). Global players such as Amazon and eBay account for a much
smaller presence in region with just 2% and 1% of call volume respectively.
When looking at the volume of incoming
calls compared to the volume of outgoing calls received by ecommerce customers,
the Truecaller Insights MENA report reveals that of Souq’s nearly 25 million
calls over the period from October 1-December 31 there was close to a 50-50
split between incoming and outgoing. Edfa3ly customers receive significantly
more calls from the company than vice versa with 6.2 million calls of the total
6.8 million coming from the company to its customers. Dubizzle/OLX also makes
more calls to customers than it receives with 4.2 million calls of a total 6.4
million being made to its customers.
Data for the Truecaller Insights MENA
report Q4 2016 was aggregated anonymously from incoming and outgoing calls to
e-commerce services in Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Saudi Arabia,
Turkey, Tunisia and Yemen. Calls from a user to retailer (or vice versa) are
defined as anything related to purchasing, complaint, customer service,
delivery etc. These insights are purely based on Truecaller’s internal data and
does not reflect the entire usage of any of the services or the accuracy or
completeness of such data.
