As part of its efforts to build the capabilities of the next generation of Emirati scientists, the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) has announced its call of the Research Grant Program. The program aims to promote research and studies related to space science in the UAE. Those from the UAE community willing to participate in the program can suggest research topics related to space science or Mars and MBRSC will provide the funds for the implementation of the research selected.
The program consists of two main areas. The first is ‘MBRSC Research Grant Program for Martian Atmosphere Science’, which contributes to developing the necessary tools and/or analysis that is aligned with the Emirates Mars Mission’s scientific objectives, and other scientific questions that can be answered utilizing the data which the mission will provide.
The second is ‘MBRSC Research Grant Program for Space Science’, which includes studies conducted on topics related to space science, such as Planetary Science, Stellar and Solar Astronomy and Galactic Astronomy.
The most scientifically significant research topics will be chosen by the science team, according to specific criteria. Criteria include science novelty and usefulness to the community, in addition to feasibility.
Commenting on the program, HE Yousuf Hamad Al Shaibani, Director General of MBRSC, said: “For many years, the UAE has been gearing up for the future by adopting the concept of a knowledge-based economy, and we all clearly see the positive outcomes and achievements being realised before our eyes. Now, the UAE is moving forward into a vital new phase of development, which requires setting up the right environment, not only through launching ambitious scientific, technological and economic projects, but also through fostering the culture of scientific research and innovation, which will act in the best interests of the community and the UAE as a whole.”
Al Shaibani added: “The Research Grant Program comes in line with the UAE strategy aimed at promoting scientific research, as it allows and urges all community members to conduct studies on space science in general and on the most prominent space project – Hope probe, in order to actively contribute to presenting findings with great scientific output.”
Al Shaibani concluded: “Scientific initiatives launched by MBRSC in relation to the space industry are primarily aimed at building a rich pool of national cadres able to work on space projects, as well as innovating applications and new means of technology, in order to drive the space sector forward to emerge as a global front runner within the industry.”
Those hoping to participate can send their suggested research topics to the e-mail: science@mbrsc.ae. The science team will review all submitted research topics to choose the best of them according to the aforementioned criteria. An announcement of the chosen research topics will take place the beginning of 2017. Accepted participants will be granted a period of one to two years for testing and interpreting hypotheses to present new findings that benefit the scientific community in the UAE.

في إطار مساعيه الى بناء القدرات وتأسيس جيل المستقبل من العلماء الإماراتيين، أطلق "مركز محمد بن راشد للفضاء"، "برنامج منح للبحوث العلمية والدراسات المتعلقة بعلوم الفضاء"، الذي يهدف إلى تحفيز البحوث والدراسات المتعلقة بعلوم الفضاء في الإمارات العربية المتحدة. ومن خلال البرنامج، يمكن لمن يرغب بالمشاركة من مجتمع دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة تحديد مقترح لبحث عن علوم الفضاء أو كوكب المريخ، على ان يأخذ المركز على عاتقه تمويل تنفيذ البحوث المختارة.
وينقسم البرنامج الى محورين رئيسيي، يتمثل المحور الأول في "برنامج مركز محمد بن راشد للفضاء للبحوث العلمية المتعلقة بالغلاف الجوي لكوكب للمريخ" وهو برنامج مفتوح لدراسات علمية تتعلق بالغلاف الجوي لكوكب المريخ والذي يتماشى مع إجابة الأسئلة العلمية لـ "مشروع الإمارات لاستكشاف المريخ" – مسبار الأمل وأسئلة علمية اخرى بإستغلال البيانات التي ستوفرها المهمة. أما المحور الثاني فهو "برنامج مركز محمد بن راشد للفضاء لعلوم الفضاء" ويتيح إجراء دراسات للمواضيع المتعلقة بعلوم الفضاء مثل علم الكواكب وعلم تحكم الفلك النجمي والشمسي وكذلك الدراسات المتعلقة بمجرتنا.
وسينتقي الفريق العلمي في المركز المقترحات البحثية الأكثر أهمية و إفادة علمياً، بناء على عدة معايير أبرزها مساهمتها في تطوير وإفادة المجتمع العلمي، بالإضافة إلى قيمتها المضافة للمعارف العلمية المختلفة في عالم الفضاء، بالإضافة إلى ميزاتها من حيث طريقة المعالجة وعرض المعلومات.
وقال سعادة يوسف حمد الشيباني، مدير عام "مركز محمد بن راشد للفضاء": "منذ سنوات عديدة أسست دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة لمرحلة واعدة عنوانها الإقتصاد المعرفي ونرى جلياً النتائج الإيجابية والإنجازات التي سبق أن تحققت وتتحقق. وحالياً، تخطو الإمارات قدماً نحو مرحلة محورية جديدة من مسيرة التنمية وذلك يتطلب تهيئة البيئة المناسبة لها، ليس فقط من خلال اطلاق المشاريع الطموحة التي تنضوي تحت الإطار العلمي والتكنولوجي والمعرفي والإقتصادي وإنما أيضاً دعم وتنمية ثقافة البحث العلمي والإبتكار والتطوير بما يصب في خدمة المجتمع ويعود بالمنفعة على الدولة".
وأضاف الشيباني: "يأتي برنامج منح البحوث تماشياً مع استراتيجية الدولة في التشجيع على البحث العلمي، إذ أنه يتيح المجال ويحث جميع أفراد المجتمع على إجراء دراسات متمحورة حول علوم الفضاء عموماً وأبحاث متعلقة بأبرز المشاريع الفضائية – مسبار الأمل، والمساهمة الفاعلة في استنتاجات علمية جديدة قد يكون لها مردود علمي كبير".
وختم الشيباني: "إن المبادرات العلمية حول مجال الفضاء التي يطلقها المركز هدفها الأول والأخير بناء كفاءات إماراتية متخصصة قادرة على خدمة المشاريع الفضائية وابتكار تطبيقات ووسائل تحرك عجلة نمو قطاع الفضاء وتميزه عالمياً".
وللراغبيين بالمشاركة في البرنامج يمكنهم إرسال موضوع البحث المقترح على البريد الإلكتروني: science@mbrsc.ae، وسيطلع الفريق العلمي في "مركز محمد بن راشد للفضاء" على جميع المقترحات البحثية المطروحة ويختار أفضل الموضوعات وفق المعايير التي سلف ذكرها. وسيتم الإعلان عن الأسماء المختارة في بداية سنة 2017. كما سيعطى المشاركون المختارون مدة تتراوح من عام إلى عامين لاختبار الفرضيات أو تفسيرها أو حلها والوصول إلى نتائج جديدة تفيد المجتمع العلمي في الإمارات.
