Alfa and Ericsson launch the “Alfa & Ericsson IoT Award”, the first IoT competition for University students in Lebanon


  • In a joint initiative, Alfa and Ericsson launch for the first time in Lebanon a competition for University students for Internet of Things (IoT) projects
  • “Alfa & Ericsson IoT Award” aims to demonstrate the potentials of the Lebanese youth and promote the IoT

          
Alfa, the first Lebanese mobile network managed by Orascom TMT and Ericsson, a world leader in communications technology and services announce launching jointly for the first time in Lebanon the “Alfa & Ericsson IoT Award”, a competition targeting Telecom, Computer and Electrical engineering final years’students of Universities in Lebanon under the Internet of Things (IoT) theme.
The competition will run for eight-weeks through which the students will be invited to present ideas related to the IoT world which shall demonstrate the potentials of the Lebanese youth in the areas of smart technologies and connected things and devices. The initiative is supported by the Young Professionals Affinity Group, part of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in Lebanon Section.
Jury teams from Alfa, Ericsson and IEEELebanon Section will be evaluating the projects and selecting the winning teams.
Alfa Chairman and CEO, Marwan Hayek commented: “Alfa is leading the transition towards the Internet of Things (IoT) and 5G in Lebanon stemming from our leading position in technology innovation as a digital telecom service provider. In that context, we are currently in the process of launching a series of initiatives that encourage entrepreneurship and innovation”. Hayek added: “This initiative aims to actively involve talented Lebanese youth in the evolution towards a networked society, which is an opportunity that will allow students to unleash their potential in the IoT domain andwhich presents a prelude to a fruitful cooperation between us and Lebanese developers and engineers,a cooperation which shall revolutionize our lifestyles,where Alfa will place at their disposal the full potential of its network and Internet speeds of up to 200 Mbits/sec.” Hayek also pointed out that: “we look forward to this competition and to all the innovations that will be presented by the students which shall promote the knowledge about the life-changing IoT revolution, through which we will create a fundamental change in Lebanon starting from the telecommunications sector.”
Mohammad Dergham, Head of Global Customer Unit Ooredoo & Customer Unit North Middle East at Ericsson said on this occasion,” The Internet of things (IoT) is a rapidly growing segment. At Ericsson, we expect that by 2021 there will be 28 billion connected devices. This initiative will enable the Lebanese youth to share their technology innovations and act as a channel to enable Ericsson’s vision in establishing a Networked Society where every person and every industry is empowered to reach its full potential.”
Ericsson Country Manager, Tony Abboud has also commented on this occasion, “This Award is a sequel to the long cooperation between Alfa and Ericsson in supporting Lebanese students to sustain their innovative potentials in the Technology and Telecom fields.”
The winning teams will be announced at the “Alfa & Ericsson IoT Award” closing ceremony which shall feature the final round of the competition. The top 3 winning teams will be awarded monetary prizes in addition to internship opportunities and recognition certificates.
This collaboration is a continuation of the series of initiatives launched between Alfa and Ericsson in supporting the Lebanese society. Other fruitful initiatives were done through the signature of the first of its kind Memorandum of Understanding between Alfa and Ericsson to start exploring 5G capabilities on the Alfa network as part of the operator’s plans to launch the first 5G site in Lebanon in 2018.

  • "جائزة ألفا وإريكسون لإنترنت الأشياء" (Alfa & Ericsson IoT Award) تهدف إلى إبراز إمكانات الشباب اللبناني وإلى تعزيز قطاع إنترنت الأشياء.

أعلنت شركة ألفا، الشبكة الخلوية اللبنانية الاولى التي تتولى شركة أوراسكوم للإتصالات إدارتها، وشركة إريكسون المورِّد العالمي الرائد لحلول وخدمات تكنولوجيا الاتصالات، عن إطلاقهما للمرة الأولى في لبنان "جائزة ألفا وإريكسون لإنترنت الأشياء"، وهي مسابقة تتناول "إنترنت الأشياء" وتتوجه إلى الطلاب في الجامعات اللبنانية، في إختصاصات هندسة الاتصالات والكمبيوتر والكهرباء ضمن السنوات العليا.

تمتد المسابقة على ثمانية أسابيع، سيُدعى خلالها الطلاب الى تقديم الأفكار المتعلقة بعالم "إنترنت الأشياء" والتي تظهر إمكانيات الشباب اللبناني في مجالات التقنيات الذكية والأشياء والأجهزة المتصلة بالإنترنت. وتحظى هذه المبادرة بدعم مجموعة تقارب المهنيين الشباب في جمعية مهندسي الكهرباء والإلكترونيات في لبنان (IEEE Young Professionals Affinity Group).
ستقوم فرق تحكيمية من ألفا واريكسون وجمعية مهندسي الكهرباء والإلكترونيات في لبنان بتقييم المشاريع واختيار الفرق الفائزة.

صرّح رئيس مجلس إدارة شركة ألفا ومديرها العام المهندس مروان الحايك: "تقود ألفا مسيرة التحول إلى عالم إنترنت الأشياء (IoT) والجيل الخامس في لبنان انطلاقا من موقعنا الريادي في مجال الإبتكار التكنولوجي كمشغل اتصالات رقمي، حيث نحن بـصدد إطلاق مجموعة من المبادرات التي تشجع روح المبادرة والابتكار". وأضاف مروان "تهدف هذه المبادرة إلى إشراك الشباب اللبناني المبدع بفاعلية في هذه المسيرة نحو التحول إلى عالم متصل ببعضه البعض، وهي فرصة ستتيح للطلاب إطلاق العنان لإمكاناتهم وإبداعاتهم في مجال إنترنت الأشياء، في ما نراه مقدمة لتعاون مثمر بيننا وبين المطورين والمهندسين اللبنانيين، تضع خلاله ألفا في متناولهم كل إمكانات شبكتها وسرعات الإنترنت التي تصل إلى 200 ميغابيت في الثانية، وهو تعاون من شانه أن يحدث ثورة في أنماط عيشنا في كل جوانبها".
ولفت الى "أننا نتطلع إلى هذه المسابقة وإلى كل الإبداعات التي سيقدمها الطلاب والتي تعزز المعرفة حول ثورة إنترنت الأشياء التي ستغير العالم، وسنحدث من خلالها تغييرا جذريا في لبنان انطلاقا من قطاع الإتصالات".  

من جانبه، قال محمد درغام، رئيس وحدة عملاء مجموعة شركة أوريدو ورئيس وحدة خدمات العملاء في منطقة شمال الشرق الأوسط في إريكسون في هذه المناسبة، "إن إنترنت الأشياء (IoT) هو قطاع سريع النمو. ونحن في إريكسون نتوقع أنه بحلول عام 2021 سوف يبلغ عدد الأجهزة المتصلة حوالي 28 مليار جهازاً. ومن شأن هذه المبادرة أن تؤدي إلى تمكين الشباب اللبناني من مشاركة ابتكاراتهم التكنولوجية، وأن تكون بمثابة قناة تمكّن رؤية إريكسون حول إنشاء مجتمع متصل بالإنترنت حيث يتزوّد كل شخص وكل صناعة بالقدرة المؤهلة لبلوغ كامل إمكاناتهما".
أمّا من جهته فعلّق مدير شركة إريكسون في لبنان طوني عبّود قائلا، "هذه الجائزة هي تكملة لمسيرة التعاون الطويلة بين شركتي ألفا و إريكسون في دعم الطلاّب اللبنانيين وتحفيذهم لتعزيز قدرتهم الإبداعية في مجال التكنولوجيا والإتصالات."
سيتم الإعلان عن الفرق الفائزة خلال حفل ختامي يتضمن الجولة النهائية للمسابقة. وستمنح الفرق الثلاثة الأوائل الفائزة جوائز نقدية وشهادات تقدير فضلا عن فرصة المشاركة في برامج تدريبية.
يمثّل هذا التعاون استمراراً لسلسلة من المبادرات بين ألفا وإريكسون، تهدف إلى دعم المجتمع اللبناني. وقد نُفذت مبادرات مثمرة أخرى من خلال توقيع أول مذكرة تفاهم من نوعها في لبنان بين ألفا وإريكسون لإستكشاف مؤهلات تكنولوجيا الجيل الخامس 5G على شبكة ألفا كجزء من استراتيجية الشركة لإطلاق أول شبكة 5G في لبنان في 2018.
