Leading transport research firm cited for its project on recycled aggregates in construction

TRL, a global centre for innovation in transport and mobility, grabbed the ‘Green Research’ award at this year’s edition of the Qatar Green Building Council’s (QGBC) Qatar Sustainability Awards, which was held recently at the Qatar National Convention Center. The awarding ceremony was one of the many activities happening on the sidelines of the Qatar Green Building Conference and Qatar Sustainability Week. The company’s win is attributed to the exemplary work rendered on its research project, ‘Recycled Aggregate in Construction,’ which has played a key role in the development of the first recycling standard and construction specification in Qatar and has been adopted by the GSO Standardization Organisation.
Between 2011 and 2015, TRL worked in close collaboration with Qatar Standards – Ministry of Municipality and Environment, Public Works Authority (Ashghal), Qatar University, and key stakeholders in the construction industry, with funding coming from the Qatar National Research Fund at Qatar Foundation. The result of the joint-cooperation was the release of a 225-page guidebook that provides comprehensive data on the construction industry in Qatar and the potential of recycling initiatives--supported by a set of statistical tables and charts, photographs and case studies.
The findings of the research have prompted Qatar Standards to publish the first Qatar Recycling Standard in 2012, and update the Qatar Construction Specification (QCS 2014) to permit the use of recycled aggregates in a range of applications, including structural concrete, non-structural concrete, concrete blocks, asphalt pavements, road sub-base materials and fill applications. The Qatar Standard and Specification was recently adopted by the GCC Standardization Organisation (GSO 2489/2015) – ’Specifications of Recycled Aggregates from Construction Waste to be used in Construction Work.’
Qatari Primary Materials Company (QPMC) signed a contract with TRL to recycle construction waste and cooperate in environmental studies. The project is aimed at supporting the government strategy of sustainable development through implementing recycling in construction projects with the benefits of improving aggregate supply, reducing costs, and protecting the environment.

This award reflects the key effort and dedication that TRL has placed in developing this study, which demonstrated and provided research evidence that recycled aggregates are significantly cheaper and can be effectively used with similar performance to that of imported aggregate. It has also allowed us to play a key role in increasing awareness about this and promoting the wider use of recycled aggregates across Qatar and the GCC. QGBC's Sustainability Awards aims to recognize the efforts, commitment, and contributions of individuals, institutions and organizations in furthering sustainable development and environmental protection in Qatar and beyond. The awards, which welcome nominations in various categories in line with the needs and trends of the green building and sustainability industries, include categories like green buildings, green hospitality, green service providers, building products and technologies, green research and sustainability initiatives. This year's edition received more than 100 nominations from various organizations across Qatar's public and private sectors. Winners were selected following a thorough reviewing process by an expert panel of judges, comprising senior sustainability experts and academics and other industry practitioners.

22 نوفمبر 2016 - فازت "مختبر أبحاث النقل- تي.أر.أل"، إحدى الشركات العالمية الرائدة في الابتكار في مجال توفير النقل وحركة التنقل، بجائزة "البحث الأخضر" خلال دورة هذا العام من "جوائز قطر للاستدامة"، التي نظمها مجلس قطر للمباني الخضراء مؤخراً في مركز قطر الوطني للمؤتمرات. وكان حفل تسليم الجوائز من بين الأنشطة المقامة على هامش مؤتمر قطر للمباني الخضراء و"أسبوع قطر للاستدامة"، حيث يعزى فوز الشركة بهذه الجائزة إلى عملها النموذجي على مشروعها البحثي "استخدام الركام المعاد تدويره في مجال الانشاءات" والذي لعب دوراً هاماً في وضع أول معيار لإعادة التدوير وأول مواصفة للبناء في قطر وتم تبنيه من قبل هيئة التقييس لدول مجلس التعاون الخليجي.
وتعاونت "مختبر أبحاث النقل- تي.أر.أل" بين العامين 2011 و2015 بشكل وثيق مع الهيئة العامة القطرية للمواصفات والمقاييس بوزارة البلدية والبيئة، وهيئة الأشغال العامة "أشغال"، وجامعة قطر، وأبرز المعنيين بقطاع الإنشاءات وبتمويل من الصندوق القطري للبحث العلمي في مؤسسة قطر. وكانت حصيلة هذا التعاون المشترك هو إطلاق كتاب من 225 صفحة يحتوي على معلومات شاملة عن قطاع الإنشاءات في قطر والإمكانات المتاحة في مجال إعادة تدوير المخلفات الانشائية، حيث يدعم هذه المعلومات مجموعة من الجداول الإحصائية والمخططات البيانية والصور ونتائج دراسات من مشاريع تجريبية.
وحفزت النتائج التي خلص إليها هذا البحث الهيئة العامة القطرية للمواصفات والمقاييس على نشر أول مواصفة لإعادة تدوير المخلفات الانشائية عام 2012، كما قامت بتحديث مواصفات الانشاءات القطرية (QCS 2014) لإجازة استخدام الركام المعاد تدويره ضمن مجموعة من التطبيقات، بما في ذلك الخرسانة الإنشائية وغير الإنشائية والطابوق الخرساني والطرق الأسفلتية ومواد تاسيس الطرق وأعمال الردم. ومؤخراً، تم اعتماد المواصفة القطرية من قبل هيئة التقييس لدول مجلس التعاون الخليجي (GSO 2489/2015) – "ﺨﺼﺎﺌص الرﻜﺎم الناﺘﺞ ﻤن إﻋﺎدة ﺘدوﻴر ﻤﺨﻠﻔﺎت اﻹﻨﺸﺎء ﻻﺴﺘﺨداﻤﻪ ﻓﻲ أﻋﻤﺎل اﻹﻨﺸﺎء".
كما وقعت شركة قطر للمواد الأولية (QPMC) اتفاقية مع "مختبر أبحاث النقل- تي.أر.أل" من أجل إعادة تدوير المخلفات الإنشائية والتعاون في مجال الدراسات البيئية. ويهدف هذا المشروع المشترك بين الجانبين إلى دعم استراتيجية الحكومة المتعقلة بالتنمية المستدامة من خلال تنفيذ عمليات إعادة التدوير في المشاريع الإنشائية مع مزايا توفير ركام محلى وتخفيض التكاليف وحماية البيئة.
وقال الدكتور خالد حسن، المدير الإقليمي ورئيس قسم البنية التحتية في الشرق الأوسط لدى "مختبر أبحاث النقل- تي.أر.أل": "نحن سعداء بهذا التكريم من قبل مجلس قطر للمباني الخضراء، حيث يعكس حصولنا على هذه الجائزة تفانينا وجهودنا الكبيرة التي بذلناها لتطوير هذه الدراسة، التي بينت وقدمت أدلة بحثية بأن الركام المعاد تدويره هو أرخص بكثير ويمكن استخدامه بكفاءة مع أداء مماثل للركام المستورد. كما أتاح لنا هذا التكريم لعب دور رئيسي في تعزيز الوعي حول هذا الموضوع والتشجيع على استخدام أوسع للركام المعاد تدويره في جميع أنحاء قطر ودول مجلس التعاون الخليجي. ونشكر مجلس قطر للمباني الخضراء على منحنا هذه الجائزة، ونؤكد دعمنا المستمر لاستراتيجية قطر الرامية إلى تحقيق التنمية المستدامة وحماية البيئة".
وتهدف جوائز الاستدامة من مجلس قطر للمباني الخضراء إلى تكريم الجهود والمساهمات والالتزام الذي يبديه كل من الأفراد والمؤسسات والمنظمات في مجال تعزيز التنمية المستدامة وحماية البيئة في قطر وخارجها. وتشتمل هذه الجوائز، التي تستقبل طلبات الترشيح ضمن مختلف الفئات تماشياً مع احتياجات واتجاهات المباني الخضراء والاستدامة، على فئات مثل المباني الخضراء، والضيافة الخضراء، ومزودي الخدمات الخضراء، ومنتجات وتقنيات المباني، والبحوث الخضراء ومبادرات الاستدامة. وتلقت دورة هذا العام أكثر من 100 طلب ترشيح من مختلف المؤسسات في القطاعين العام والخاص في قطر، حيث تم اختيار الفائزين بعد إجراء عملية مراجعة شاملة من قبل لجنة من المحكمين تشمل خبراء وأكاديميين بارزين في مجال الاستدامة وغيرهم من المختصين في هذا المجال.
