AUC to Discuss Euro-Mediterranean Refugee and Migration Crisis


WHAT
A conference, “Euro-Mediterranean Refugee and Migration Crisis: Magnitude and European Response,” organized by the Center for Migration and Refugee Studies at The American University in Cairo (AUC), in partnership with the Finnish Embassy and the Finnish Institute in the Middle East.
The conference topics revolve around the causes, expressions and magnitude of the crisis, as well as the response of the European Union and its member states to the conflict, in addition to the response of international organizations such as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM). Moreover, there will be presentations by refugees of different nationalities residing in Finland to outline their experiences in EU member states.

The conference will host European ambassadors, professors, academics and current refugees residing in European states, including Tuula Yrjölä, ambassador of Finland in Cairo; James Moran, head of the EU delegation in Egypt; Charlotta Sparre, ambassador of Sweden in Cairo; Christodoulos Lazaris, ambassador of Greece in Cairo; Elizabeth Tan, regional representative, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR); Carmela Godeau, regional director, International Organization for Migration (IOM); Christian Kaunert, director of the European Institute for Security and Justice and professor of International Politics and Ibrahim Awad, practicing professor of public policy and director of Center of Migration and Refugee Studies, AUC.
