The Forum is officially hosted by the Scottish Government in conjunction with Thomson Reuters, UK Sustainable and Investment and Finance Association (UKSIF), DDCAP, SEDCO Capital, Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank, the Islamic Finance Council UK (UKIFC) and other partners.
One of TIME Magazine's 100 Most Influential People (2011), His Royal Highness Emir Muhammad Sanusi II, who led a an anti-corruption campaign as Nigeria’s Central Bank Governor, will speak on his experience as the banking chief of Africa’s largest economy in Africa. He is quoted as saying: "It is now evident in the aftermath of the financial crisis that the importance of values cannot be overlooked in the financial system. The major stakeholders especially the regulators are expected to play a key role in making sure that the financial institutions not only abide by law but remain ethical in their practices and work towards the betterment of society in addition to achieving their financial goals. The global ethical finance forum will address these issues and I look forward to sharing my experiences at the forum."
GEFF has also partnered with the Global Alliance for Banking on Values, an organization that is a formidable voice in the conversation on creating investment opportunities through responsible financing. Speaking ahead of the event, Dr Marcos Eguiguren, Executive Director of the Global Alliance for Banking on Values stated, “At the Global Alliance for Banking on Values we are working to ensure banking is more inclusive and serves society. As an independent network of banks and banking cooperatives, we share a mission to use finance to deliver sustainable economic, social and environmental development.”
He continues to reinforce the pivotal role of GEFF in streamlining ethical finance with conventional ways of financing: “This forum will address the importance of values-based banking and I am delighted to be participating.”
The event has a fantastic line-up of pioneers as speakers and esteemed delegates from the Middle East, Africa, East Asia and Europe. Tirad Al Mahmoud , CEO of Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank (ADIB), a prominent speaker at global events advocating a “back-to-basics” approach to banking said: “Conventional banking is currently being encouraged by governments, regulators and even the media to get back to basics following the global financial crisis. There is an increasing demand for a banking model that will provide simple solutions, speak a language everyone understands and manages their funds in a fair and transparent way with no hidden charges or unexplained risks. The Islamic banking model speaks to these concepts and is increasingly gaining traction across the world. The convergence of Islamic finance with the West comes together in the form of ethical finance.”
Mr. Mahmoud reaffirms the fundamental role of GEFF and further adds that, “ADIB is helping to redefine the business model for finance and is striving to make sure that the ideas it puts forward conform to the expectations and aspirations of its main stakeholders. The Global Ethical Finance Forum will be a great platform to facilitate a dialogue about the development of the universal appeal of Islamic finance in the changing landscape of ethical finance”.
