Boehringer Ingelheim brings
together renowned global and regional senior medical professionals and
physicians at a 2-day symposium in Luxor to discuss the safety and efficacy in
treatment of acute Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and Pulmonary Embolism (PE)
· Venous Thromboembolism (VTE), which comprises both Deep Vein
Thrombosis (DVT) and Pulmonary Embolism (PE), is estimated to be the third
most common cardiovascular disorder after coronary heart disease and stroke
in the MENA region
- DVT and PE
are serious conditions and can be fatal: Up to one third of people
who suffer from DVT or PE blood clots will die within three months and up
to a quarter of those who survive will have another blood clot within five
years. 1
· Thrombophilia is frequently observed as a risk factor and is related
to the high prevalence among the Lebanese population; approximately 14.4%.
Lebanon,
November 25, 2014 – Deep Vein thrombosis (DVT) is a major medical disease in emerging countries within the Middle East and
North Africa (MENA) region. PE is the most common preventable cause of hospital
death and DVT/VTE are often undetected until too late making the disease and
mortality persisted regardless of treatment strategy. DVT in developed counties
is considered a public health problem and over the years this has led to
elaboration of numerous strategies directed towards reducing the risks of DVT.
In order to address
the usefulness of new innovations in the AF and related space, Boehringer
Ingelheim conducted a 2-day Middle East Thrombosis Forum in Luxor, Egypt.
The forum provided highlights on treatment and reduction in risk of recurrent Deep
Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and Pulmonary Embolism (PE).
Moreover, the
forum generated awareness on the current management of AF patients in the
Middle East, current gaps and key learning’s, overview of the current landscape
for stroke prevention in AF and prevalence of DVT in the Middle East. The event
also shared insights on new treatment paradigms on guidelines to clinical
practice followed by a panel discussion on the future of Thrombosis.
Among the Middle
Eastern population, venous thromboembolism (VTE), comprising deep vein
thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), is known to be a common cause of illness
and one of the most common preventable causes of in-hospital deaths.
Statistics on DVT and PE in Lebanon revealed
that advanced age, recent surgery, coagulation abnormalities are amongst the
most common risk factor for venous thrombosis.
Dr. Yasser El Shahawy, Regional Medical Affairs
Manager, Cardiovascular, Responsible for Middle East and North Africa region,
Iran and Pakistan at Boehringer Ingelheim, commented, “DVT and PE are critical medical conditions and can be
fatal: Studies suggest that up to one third of people who suffer from DVT or PE
blood clots will die within three months and up to a quarter of those who
survive will have another blood clot within five years. Furthermore, PE as a
consequence of a DVT is the leading cause of preventable death in hospital. To
avoid this, and to minimize a patient’s risk of experiencing another blood
clot, effective and safe treatment is imperative.”
Dr Mirna
Waked, Pulmonary
Physician and Head of the Pulmonary & ICU division at St George Hospital
Beirut, who’s heavily involved in collaborating with different hospitals in
Lebanon to set up the DVT/PE patients’ management guidelines and protocols said, “It is important to note that people with
atrial fibrillation are at greater risk of a thromboembolism and thrombosis can
be either acute or chronic and pointed out that after the first acute event,
the patient is at a high risk of recurrent VTE. People with Atrial
Fibrillation have a five times greater risk of suffering a thromboembolic
event, such as stroke.”
George K. Andrikopoulos, MD, PhD, FESC, Vice-President of Institute
for the Study and Education on Thrombosis and Antithrombotic Therapy, said, “Thrombosis causes a major burden of disease across low-to
middle income and high-income countries and we are still finding measures for
the best patient outcome. There is a
need to record the instances for thrombosis and the disease trends which can
help in coming up with more effective solutions both globally and locally. This will help us to evaluate if the improved
utilization of preventive measures are helping in reducing the burden or more
innovative solutions need to be undertaken.”
In conclusion, the forum highlighted that DVT as a regional public
health issue in the emerging countries should take a multi-dimensional approach
targeting the epidemiology of the disease and implementation of cost-effective
precautionary and therapeutic programs.
The conference was attended by renowned and senior doctors
representing more than 12 countries from the region including: Gulf countries,
Lebanon, Egypt, Jordan, Libya and Iraq including international speakers to
discuss the local prevalence of the diseases and identify preventive measures.
