Oxford University Press publishes ground-breaking new Oxford Arabic Dictionary

New Modern Standard Arabic dictionary features over 130,000 words and phrases, 200,000 translations, 70,000 real example phrases

On Thursday 28 August 2014, Oxford University Press will celebrate the print and digital publication of the Oxford Arabic Dictionary.
Produced by an international team of expert translators and advisors using Oxford’s renowned language research programme, the Oxford Arabic Dictionary is the first of its kind to be based throughout on real modern evidence of both English and Arabic usage.
The unique Arabic corpus, developed specially for this project, provides evidence of the latest vocabulary used in computing, business, the media, and the arts, making the resource the most up-to-date bilingual Arabic and English dictionary available. The dictionary focuses on the standardized variant of Arabic used in writing and formal speech, commonly known as Modern Standard Arabic.
One of the key strengths of this project is the 70,000 real example phrases that illustrate the dictionary entries. These examples help the user interpret everyday modern meaning and usage accurately, and cement the Oxford Arabic Dictionary as the most pragmatic work of its kind.
The dictionary is available in print and is also accessible online via subscription at Oxforddictionaries.com/Arabic. The online edition is fully accessible on mobile and tablet, and, via specially developed search software, enables learners and users of Arabic and English to search more than 330,000 words, phrases, and translations. Regular word and content updates will ensure that the online Oxford Arabic Dictionary continues to reflect the latest vocabulary and trends in language usage.

يضم أكثر من 130 ألف كلمة وعبارة و200 ألف ترجمة و70 ألف مثال من الجمل والعبارات الحقيقية

تحتفل مطبعة جامعة أكسفورد يوم غد الخميس 28 أغسطس 2014 بإطلاق قاموس أكسفورد العربي الجديد بنسختيه المطبوعة والإلكترونية. ويُعَد هذا القاموس الجديد، الذي أشرف على إعداده فريق دولي من المترجمين والمستشارين من ذوي الخبرة استنادا إلى الأبحاث اللغوية الحديثة التي تقوم بها الجامعة، الأول من نوعه من حيث الاعتماد على أدلة معجمية من نصوص عصرية لاستخدامات اللغتين العربية والإنجليزية.

ويعتمد قاموس أكسفورد العربي على ذخيرة نصوص عربية فريدة من نوعها قد تم تطويرها خصيصا لهذا المشروع، وهي ذخيرة تزخر بمجموعة من أحدث المفردات اللغوية المستخدمة في مجال الحوسبة والكمبيوتر والأعمال التجارية ووسائل الإعلام والفنون، مما يجعل هذا القاموس المرجع الأكثر حداثة بين القواميس المتوفرة حاليا باللغتين العربية والإنجليزية. ويعتمد القاموسُ اللغةَ العربية الحديثة والمستخدمة في الكتابة والمحادثات الرسمية. ويحتوي على 70 ألف مثال حقيقي لعبارات توضيحية لمداخل وأبواب القاموس تمثل إحدى نقاط القوة فيه وتهدف إلى مساعدة المستخدم على تفسير معاني المفردات الحديثة واستخداماتها بدقة.

ويتوفر القاموس بنسخة مطبوعة وأخرى إلكترونية يمكن الحصول عليها عن طريق الاشتراك في الموقع الإلكتروني: oxforddictionaries.com/Arabic.  وتوفر الطبعة الإلكترونية، المتاحة بشكل كامل على أجهزة التواصل والاتصالات المحمولة وعن طريق برمجية بحث خاصة، للمهتمين بتعلم اللغتين العربية والإنجليزية ومستخدميهما إمكانية البحث عن أكثر من 130 ألف  كلمة وعبارة و200 ألف ترجمة حديثة. وسيتم تحديث كلمات ومحتوى النسخة الإلكترونية لقاموس أكسفورد العربي بشكل منتظم بحيث يعكس أحدث الاتجاهات والمفردات المستخدمة في اللغة.

وقالت تريسي أرتس، رئيسة تحرير قاموس أكسفورد العربي: "عندما كنت طالبة في مرحلة التسعينات، استخدمت قاموساً "عربي - إنجليزي" وآخر "إنجليزي-عربي" تم إصدارهما في السبعينات. هذان القاموسان لا يزالان يمثلان أفضل الخيارات المتاحة حتى عام 2014. وقد جاء إطلاق قاموس أكسفورد العربي الجديد في هذا الوقت ليوفر للمهتمين بالتعلم والمترجمين قاموسا حديثا يمكنهم من خلاله العثور على الكلمات والمفردات العربية التي يحتاجونها في تعاملاتهم أو حتى في التدوين أو التغريد على تويتر أو غيرها من المواقع".

وأضافت أرتس: "يتميز القاموس بالشمولية وبالوضوح مع احتوائه على شرح واف للمعاني موضحة بالأمثلة للمساعدة على اختيار أي من الترجمات المتوفرة؛  وأكثر من 26 ألف باب لكلا اللغتين إضافة إلى استناده إلى أدلة معجمية عصرية للغة العربية المعاصرة. ويبرز القاموس اللغتين العربية والإنجليزية باعتبارهما من اللغات الديناميكية العظمى في العالم كما أنه يخلق جسرا فريدا بين اللغتين".

وقال كاسبر غراثوول، رئيس قسم القواميس في مطبعة جامعة أكسفورد: "مع ارتفاع الطلب على مهارات اللغة العربية واستخداماتها في عالم الأعمال ووسائل الإعلام والحياة العامة، فإن قاموس أكسفورد العربي يمثل مرجعا مثاليا طال انتظاره لأي شخص يستخدم أو يهتم بتعلم اللغتين العربية والإنجليزية ".
