Poland is a country with a vast diversity of architecture, historical monuments, castles and palaces open to public. It has 13 UNESCO sites, some of which compose not of only one building, but whole city complexes, such as the Old Towns of Warsaw, Krakow, Torun, and Zamość. Warsaw,
the Polish capital, was rebuilt by its own inhabitants after World War
II from complete ruins and in consequence it’s painstakingly
reconstructed Old Town was put on the UNESCO List of World Heritage
Sites. Krakow, the former capital of Poland and seat of kings, is a
pearl of the European Renaissance. Gdansk - the home of the “Solidarity”
movement which initiated the freedom fight in the communist Eastern
Europe used to be one of the richest port cities in medieval times,
which is reflected presently in the city’s beautiful and unique
architecture. Toruń, the city of Copernicus is a red brick city of the
Pomeranian Gothic style. Zamość was built to be a model Renaissance
town. It is also worth visiting the charming city of Wroclaw especially
that it has been chosen the European Capital of Culture for 2016. There
are several other “must see” cities and sites in Poland, besides the
UNESCO ones. Many more cities have historical city centres, castles, and
palaces. Due to a long turbulent history each Polish city offers its
own different culture, style, and history.
Poland is a paradise for those interested in culture,
as there is an endless list of various cultural festivals, music
competitions and outdoor events, many of which have an international
character and are famous worldwide. There are about
900 museums of different kinds in Poland. The biggest concentration of
galleries and cultural attractions is in Krakow, where its rich cultural
legacy co-exists with modern life and extravagant art.
With no exaggeration Poland is a haven for nature lovers.
It is lucky to have a great variety of landscapes: a long Baltic Sea
coastline with beautiful sandy beaches and rolling sand dunes, lake
provinces with more than 10 000 lakes, lowlands, hilly regions, and
diverse mountain ranges. Our 23 national parks are located in all of
these regions. 8 of these parks are also on the UNESCO List of World
Biosphere Reserve. You can observe here animal and plant species which
are extinct or rare elsewhere in the world, such as the European Bison.
Thanks to the diversity of landscapes, Poland is an attractive destination for active tourism.
It is a dream come true for water sports enthusiasts thanks to the long
cost line, thousands of lakes, and many rivers and channels. It is also
a winter sports destination. Poland also offers a large number of golf
courses and bike and trekking trails in all kinds of terrain with good
conditions for alpinism due to the diverse types of mountains.
A stay in Poland can be combined with beauty or health treatments. Poland has 200 SPA resorts.
They take advantage of various kinds of mineral waters and mud for
healing and relaxation, combined with the use of modern equipment.
Increasingly popular are also salt caves. A natural salt cave used for
health purposes is the Wieliczka Salt Mine (a UNESCO site), which
offers daily and even weekly stays almost 135 m underground for patients
with respiratory problems. It is one of only a few such
subtereneotherapy centers in the world.
In recent years Poland became a major receiptient of foreigners travelling abroad for medical
purposes. In 2012 Poland received half a milion of such guests. It has
world class medical centers and hospitals which conduct treatments with
the use of leading edge technical solutions in global medicine,
guaranteeing the highest medical care standards. Prices range from 3 to 7
times less than that experienced in Western Europe. Half of Poland’s
foreign patients come from the United Kingdom , with many patients also
from the Uinted States. The most popular procedures are: cosmetic
surgery, dentistry, obesity surgery, orthopaedic surgery, and infertility treatments, with 4% orthopaedic surgery.
Dining, entertainment and shopping
are inseparable parts of each trip, and Poland is the place for each of
them. The choice of restaurants, clubs and pubs is extremely wide. Poland is also a perfect shopping destination. Each
big Polish city has several expansive and modern shopping centers with
hundreds of stores, many of which belong to world famous chains. Many
also offer multiplex movie theaters (where films are played in the
original language versions, thus being foreigner friendly). These
shopping centres are open 7 days a week until 10 pm. Each year a Polish shopping center wins one of the European Shopping Centre Awards.
