CNN’s Destination Egypt highlights legacy of eco-tourism on the Red Sea coast

In a report as part of CNN’s Destination Egypt, the programme travels to the Red Sea coast to explore one of the country’s best kept secrets – the coral reefs in Marsa Alam.

Home to over 300 different types of fish, the reefs are a treasure trove for snorkellers and divers. Their popularity has led to the foundation of several eco-resorts in an effort to protect some of the world’s most spectacular reefs.

The coral has far less environmental damage than other reefs around the world – thanks in part to Hossam Helmy, who has been at the forefront of conservation efforts for over 30 years.

“The most important thing I think is the control of the people who are using the sea.” Helmy explains to CNN.“If you manage to do that in the right way you will save the marine life on the bay.”

Having founded his first eco-resort in 1989, Helmy now runs three resorts and campaigns to protect some of the world’s most spectacular reefs.

Helmy’s passion for the eco-tourism has been reflected in the size of his resorts, which are limited to accommodate just 175 people in order to minimalise its environmental impact. The Marsa Shagra Village uses solar energy, restricts and recycles plastic use as well as organising daily clean ups of local beaches.

He explains to the programme: “This is the value we have, the house reef, the marine life inside… You sort of get that feeling that if you're really doing sort of that sustainable tourism model, that you're not just taking from the place that you go to but giving back to it as well.”

CNN hears that eco-tourism is a further attraction for visitors to Egypt and the programme speaks to visitors to Helmy’s resort to understand what originally drew them to the Red Sea coast.

One visitor tells the programme: “As a tourist it makes me feel good. It gives me peace of mind to think that I'm doing something for the environment.”

The first 1000 days of life: Why little lungs and brains need clean air

Exposure to air pollution, affecting the physical and cognitive development of the child, starts already in the womb. With access to clean air during the most critical phase of a child’s development, health and life-long learning is improved.

Dubai, UAE, October 30, 2019: There is much focus on child nutrition during the first 1000 days and with good reason: children with good nutrition are ten times more likely to overcome life-threatening childhood diseases and complete at least four grades at school. However, what few know is that access to clean air, or lack of it, is fundamental to a child’s development, both physical and cognitive.

The first one thousand days from conception to age two are critical to every child. In this span of time, the immune system develops, and a child’s brain connects about 1,000 neurons a second, building intricate pathways for messages to travel onward through the body. A look at a two-year-old’s brain shows that it is twice as active as an adult’s brain building bridges to connect the nerve cells in the brain for future use. The ability to process images (vision), sound (hearing) and to recognize and remember language and images like the faces, are all developed during a child’s first 1000 days.

With rising levels of air pollution indoors and outdoors, children are increasingly at risk. Miscarriage, premature birth, low birth weight and illnesses such as asthma, allergies, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases can all be linked to air pollution. Young children and pregnant women also spend increasingly more time indoors, where the air is up to five times more polluted.

“More than nine in 10 parents across the globe think that clean air plays an important role in

ensuring the health of their children, and most also worry that polluted air will have an impact on their children’s learning” said Sara Alsén, Chief Purpose Officer, Blueair. “The good news is that we spend increasingly more time indoors where the air can easily be monitored and improved,” she added.

Can air purifiers help ensure a baby friendly air?

More than two-thirds of parents in China, India, South Korea and the US think that an air purifier is beneficial for raising a healthy child according to recent research by independent UK based research firm YouGov. By removing common allergens like dust, mites, bacteria and virus, and household pollutants such as chemicals from paint, furniture, clothing and cleaning detergents, in addition to car exhausts, smoke, soot entering our homes through windows and ventilation, air purifiers can ensure a healthy indoor air for pregnant women and young children.

What air purifier to choose for my baby?

Blueair air purifiers are recommended by influential US Today’s Parent Approved for its effectiveness and ease of use. The Blueair Classic 405 and 480i are among Blueair’s most high performing air purifiers used by families in over 60 countries around the world. These models are also recommended by the Asthma Allergy Nordic for children with allergies, asthma and respiratory illnesses. The Blueair Classic 405 is, for the second year in a row, recognized as “Best-in-Test” in an independent laboratory testing of 10 different air purifier brands conducted by accredited Intertek Testing & Certification and IBR Laboratories in 2019.

Why is Blueair superior to other air purifiers?

Thanks to the unique HEPASilent™ technology, which removes 99.97% of all airborne particles down to 0.1 micron in size including allergens, bacteria and virus, chemicals, smoke, dust, mold, and car exhausts, Blueair air purifiers have superior performance also at lowest speed. As a result, Blueair air purifiers are whisper silent, ensuring maximum protection, while not waking up little ones asleep.

This functionality also makes it possible to configure more than 24 sites of the HDVC videoconference system without an external server or MCU. Cascade Mode Application is beneficial for relatively large organizations, such as governmental organizations or large group companies, who frequently hold group representative conferences and distribute it to all attendees. This is also useful for large-scale remote learning or training facilities, such as educational institutes or service-oriented companies.

The KX-VC HDVC range offers Full HD 1080p image quality, crystal-clear audio and allows Dual Network connection. This line-up also provides flexible system configurations and can connect up to 24 sites to meet customers’ needs.
