Sharjah to put spotlight on top local tourist attractions at World Travel Market 2019 in London

November 3, 2019

The Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority (SCTDA) has announced that it is joining the World Travel Market (WTM) in London, which will be held from 4 to 6 November, 2019, for the 17th consecutive year as part of its intensified campaign to promote Sharjah’s diverse and unique tourist offerings on the world stage.

During the event, SCTDA will showcase a range of attractions that make Sharjah one of the region’s favorite family destinations on the world map today. In cooperation with its partners from the public and private sectors, SCTDA will also promote tourism programs and initiatives designed to attract tourists to the emirate, cultural and eco-tourism products, a wide range of sports, recreational and artistic activities, and adventure packages capable of delivering an enhanced tourist experience.

Moreover, the Authority will highlight Sharjah’s entertainment, cultural, and heritage programs and activities organized by various organizations apart from exclusive tourist packages provided by major tourist facilities, resorts, and hotels. The number of hotel facilities in Sharjah has remarkably increased over the past few years alongside the growing tourist arrivals to the emirate. The Emirate has currently a total of 10,883 hotel rooms, with hotel establishments in the emirate offering world-class services that meet expectations. Additional 18 hotels and 16 hotel apartments are expected to be completed over the next five years, with a total of 5,679 rooms to be added to the current number in the coming years.

The event will also provide SCTDA with an international venue to promote Sharjah’s most prominent historical sites, museums, exhibitions, festivals, and technology-driven projects such as Smart Mirror, Sharjah Boat, and the Virtual Reality experience.

Known for its rich heritage, history, and unique cultural diversity, Sharjah is an ideal tourism destination that offers multiple tourist attractions, each of which has different characteristics and offerings. The central region, for instance, is known for its stunning desert, offering adventure lovers with an opportunity to enjoy its sand and towering dunes while riding on SUVs. The eastern region, on the other hand, has beautiful terrains, exciting mountain adventures, historical sites, and museums. Moreover, the Emirate hosts many popular events, festivals and exhibitions.

“WTM 2019 will allow us to raise awareness about Sharjah’s growing tourism sector. It will enable us at the Authority to help put Sharjah on the world tourism map and entice more tourists worldwide, including travelers from the UK, Ireland, and other parts of Europe - thus bringing us closer to our goal of attracting 10 million visitors by 2021. In 2018, more than 578,000 European visitors traveled to Sharjah, up 24 per cent from the previous year, which reached 468.034, and we hope and look forward to increasing the numbers further in the coming years,” H.E. Khalid Jasim Al Midfa, Chairman of SCTDA, said.

The Authority will also put the spotlight on its recently launched apps designed to boost the emirate’s hospitality and tourism industry. These include the AI Tour Guide Chatbot, Smart Hotel Licensing and Classification, Smart Vehicle Permit System, and the Hotel Statistics System- Business Intelligence (HSS – BI) solution.

H.E. Al Midfa concluded: “Our participation at the WTM is part of our response to the directive of H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, to make Sharjah a global touristic destination. The local tourism sector, one of the vital economic sectors, has witnessed steady growth and development. During the event, we will have an opportunity to see the latest trends in the global tourism sector, showcase Sharjah’s beauty and offerings such as events, festivals, and exhibitions, meet and exchange experiences with decision-makers, and learn about the latest practices in tourism, hospitality, and travel.”

SCTDA recently launched the SHJ AI Guide to enhance the experience of both residents and visitors. The unique easy-to-use application is designed to help visitors from around the world. The application acts as a comprehensive and interactive tourist guide, providing all users with the latest information and details about local destinations, leisure activities, restaurants, and hotel facilities. It is available in five languages, namely Arabic, English, German, Chinese, and Russian. SHJ AI Guide can be downloaded on Apple Store and Google Play.

SCTDA will head Sharjah’s delegation that will comprise leading entities from the government and private sectors. The government delegates are Sharjah International Airport Authority; Sharjah Museums Authority; Environment & Protected Areas Authority; Shurooq; Sharjah Expo Centre; and Sharjah Institute for Heritage. Participants from the private sector are Sharjah Airport Travel Agency (SATA); Sheraton Sharjah Beach & Resort; Hilton Sharjah; Sharjah Collection; Trav Talk; Hotel Holiday International; Cozmo Travel LLC and Golden Sands Sharjah.

ACWA Power and NOMAC launch a new company “NMES” to provide advanced maintenance solutions for power and water plants in the Middle East

UAE, Dubai, 3 November 2019: ACWA Power, a Saudi leader in the sectors of water desalination and conventional and renewable power generation worldwide, and its Operations and Maintenance arm, The First National Operation & Maintenance Co. (NOMAC), are expanding and fortifying their presence in the power and water market through a newly established entity - NOMAC Maintenance Energy Services (NMES). The newly formed NMES specializes in deploying and providing technologically advanced maintenance solutions for power generation and water desalination plants. The launch of NMES is in line with ACWA Power and NOMAC’s expansion and growth plan within these two sectors in the region.

NMES will benefit from and feed on the in-depth knowledge derived from ACWA Power and NOMAC’s expertise in operating and maintaining energy and water desalination plants in the region.

The launch took place at NMES’ new facility in Dubai, in the presence of over 200 stakeholders attending on behalf of KSA and UAE utility companies. These included: Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA); Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (SEWA); and the Federal Electricity and Water Authority (FEWA). Senior executives from ACWA Power, NOMAC, and representatives of the newly established NMES company also attended the event.

Commenting on the launch of NMES, Eng. Thamer Al Sharhan, Chairman of NOMAC and Managing Director at ACWA Power, said: “We are extremely proud to launch NOMAC Maintenance Energy Services (NMES), as it serves as an extension of ACWA Power and NOMAC’s leadership in the region with regards to the power generation and water desalination sectors as well as the maintenance and operations sphere. This accomplishment is not only a testament of our local and international expertise in power generation and water desalination, it also evidently showcases our knowledge in operating and maintaining large scale projects at the highest levels of efficiency and quality.

The launch of the new company comes within ACWA Power and NOMAC’s commitment to supplying the water and power market with robust human and technical capabilities that meet the requirements of companies operating in these sectors, as well as facilitating the implementation of their ambitious plans. It will also play a key role in bringing governmental sustainability visions and plans to reality.”

NMES will provide power and water desalination players across the Middle East with cutting-edge, cost-efficient technology solutions for the maintenance of plant machinery and equipment. The services provided by NMES will allow leading plants in the United Arab Emirates, Oman and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to significantly reduce overheads and downtime due to machinery breakdown and technical issues. NMES’s high-quality solutions will effectively lower costs for providing desalinated water and power – successfully contributing to increasing the affordability of both resources.

During the launch event, NMES experts demonstrated its extensive capabilities that included 3D scanning and modelling; online testing and calibration services; and maintenance of turbine rotators.

“NMES offers world-class services to plants, effectively supporting the power & water, oil & gas and mining industries. As testament to our strong offering, NMES partnered with Siemens to manage one of the world’s largest outages for F class gas turbines. In line with our vision, we strive to provide the highest level of services and technologies at competitive rates, which enables our assets to optimize their maintenance expenditure and helps ACWA Power and NOMAC bid more effectively for future projects”, said NOMAC VP of Field Services & NMES Business Leader, Mr. Harald Schmit.

NMES will elevate value in countries that ACWA Power and NOMAC operate in through expert trainings, creation of job opportunities and upskilling of local talent in line with the companies’ commitment to bolster sustainable socio-economic prosperity.

With the unveiling of its new machinery and services hub, NMES intends to secure its regional market position in the UAE and increase its market share internationally. NMES will also explore opportunities in renewable energy - a vital growth area for countries in the region.

NMES is fully owned by NOMAC - which provides high quality Operation & Maintenance (O&M) services for production of power and desalinated water worldwide. NOMAC is a wholly owned subsidiary of ACWA Power.

CNN’s Destination Egypt highlights legacy of eco-tourism on the Red Sea coast

In a report as part of CNN’s Destination Egypt, the programme travels to the Red Sea coast to explore one of the country’s best kept secrets – the coral reefs in Marsa Alam.

Home to over 300 different types of fish, the reefs are a treasure trove for snorkellers and divers. Their popularity has led to the foundation of several eco-resorts in an effort to protect some of the world’s most spectacular reefs.

The coral has far less environmental damage than other reefs around the world – thanks in part to Hossam Helmy, who has been at the forefront of conservation efforts for over 30 years.

“The most important thing I think is the control of the people who are using the sea.” Helmy explains to CNN.“If you manage to do that in the right way you will save the marine life on the bay.”

Having founded his first eco-resort in 1989, Helmy now runs three resorts and campaigns to protect some of the world’s most spectacular reefs.

Helmy’s passion for the eco-tourism has been reflected in the size of his resorts, which are limited to accommodate just 175 people in order to minimalise its environmental impact. The Marsa Shagra Village uses solar energy, restricts and recycles plastic use as well as organising daily clean ups of local beaches.

He explains to the programme: “This is the value we have, the house reef, the marine life inside… You sort of get that feeling that if you're really doing sort of that sustainable tourism model, that you're not just taking from the place that you go to but giving back to it as well.”

CNN hears that eco-tourism is a further attraction for visitors to Egypt and the programme speaks to visitors to Helmy’s resort to understand what originally drew them to the Red Sea coast.

One visitor tells the programme: “As a tourist it makes me feel good. It gives me peace of mind to think that I'm doing something for the environment.”

The first 1000 days of life: Why little lungs and brains need clean air

Exposure to air pollution, affecting the physical and cognitive development of the child, starts already in the womb. With access to clean air during the most critical phase of a child’s development, health and life-long learning is improved.

Dubai, UAE, October 30, 2019: There is much focus on child nutrition during the first 1000 days and with good reason: children with good nutrition are ten times more likely to overcome life-threatening childhood diseases and complete at least four grades at school. However, what few know is that access to clean air, or lack of it, is fundamental to a child’s development, both physical and cognitive.

The first one thousand days from conception to age two are critical to every child. In this span of time, the immune system develops, and a child’s brain connects about 1,000 neurons a second, building intricate pathways for messages to travel onward through the body. A look at a two-year-old’s brain shows that it is twice as active as an adult’s brain building bridges to connect the nerve cells in the brain for future use. The ability to process images (vision), sound (hearing) and to recognize and remember language and images like the faces, are all developed during a child’s first 1000 days.

With rising levels of air pollution indoors and outdoors, children are increasingly at risk. Miscarriage, premature birth, low birth weight and illnesses such as asthma, allergies, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases can all be linked to air pollution. Young children and pregnant women also spend increasingly more time indoors, where the air is up to five times more polluted.

“More than nine in 10 parents across the globe think that clean air plays an important role in

ensuring the health of their children, and most also worry that polluted air will have an impact on their children’s learning” said Sara Alsén, Chief Purpose Officer, Blueair. “The good news is that we spend increasingly more time indoors where the air can easily be monitored and improved,” she added.

Can air purifiers help ensure a baby friendly air?

More than two-thirds of parents in China, India, South Korea and the US think that an air purifier is beneficial for raising a healthy child according to recent research by independent UK based research firm YouGov. By removing common allergens like dust, mites, bacteria and virus, and household pollutants such as chemicals from paint, furniture, clothing and cleaning detergents, in addition to car exhausts, smoke, soot entering our homes through windows and ventilation, air purifiers can ensure a healthy indoor air for pregnant women and young children.

What air purifier to choose for my baby?

Blueair air purifiers are recommended by influential US Today’s Parent Approved for its effectiveness and ease of use. The Blueair Classic 405 and 480i are among Blueair’s most high performing air purifiers used by families in over 60 countries around the world. These models are also recommended by the Asthma Allergy Nordic for children with allergies, asthma and respiratory illnesses. The Blueair Classic 405 is, for the second year in a row, recognized as “Best-in-Test” in an independent laboratory testing of 10 different air purifier brands conducted by accredited Intertek Testing & Certification and IBR Laboratories in 2019.

Why is Blueair superior to other air purifiers?

Thanks to the unique HEPASilent™ technology, which removes 99.97% of all airborne particles down to 0.1 micron in size including allergens, bacteria and virus, chemicals, smoke, dust, mold, and car exhausts, Blueair air purifiers have superior performance also at lowest speed. As a result, Blueair air purifiers are whisper silent, ensuring maximum protection, while not waking up little ones asleep.
