Under the auspices of the Ministry of Health, Sandoz Launches Egyptian Anti-infective Stewardship Program in Partnership with Four Medical Societies

• With the Health Ministry’s endorsement, Sandoz Egypt Pharma (S.A.E.) hosts educational initiative for healthcare professionals in Egypt in partnership with four medical societies
• Initiative aims to raise awareness of diagnosis and treatment of infections, and the importance and optimal use of antibiotics 

Cairo, October 9, 2019 – Under the auspices of the Ministry of Health, Sandoz, a global leader in generic pharmaceuticals and biosimilars, launched the Egyptian Anti-infective Stewardship Program in partnership with the Egyptian Society of Surgeons (ESS), the Egyptian Scientific Society of Bronchology (ESB), the Egyptian Pediatric Association (EPA), and the Egyptian Rhinology Society (ERS).  

Given that antibiotics are a fundamental pillar of healthcare, this Sandoz-sponsored initiative aims to develop scientific consensus on recommendations for the optimal diagnosis and treatment of various infections.

“As a global leader in the field of antibiotics and driven by our commitment to patients and societies, we recognize the importance of our responsibility to help advance medical practice. With the Health Ministry’s endorsement, and together with four medical societies, Sandoz is sponsoring the Egyptian Anti-infective Stewardship Program. We have designed and rolled out this first-of-its-kind program to raise awareness of optimal diagnosis, management and treatment of infectious diseases,” said Thodoris Dimopoulos, Head of Sandoz North East Africa.

Dr. Sherif Abdel Aal, Consultant Pediatrician at Cairo University and CEO of the EPA, hailed the initiative, saying, “we are very happy to be part of an ambitious and dynamic medical community working to achieve a vision of healthy societies. I would like to thank Sandoz for enabling this precedent, joining forces with four scientific societies to reach a consensus on recommendations for the optimal diagnosis and treatment of numerous infectious diseases, especially pneumonia.” 

“Widely considered the primary cause of death among children under the age of 5, pneumonia mostly affects developing countries, and statistics have shown that nearly 900,000 children died of the disease in 2017. In Egypt, pneumonia affects one in every 12 children, mainly during the first year of life2, 6, 13, 14,” added Dr. Abdel Aal.

“As one of the world’s top antibiotic manufacturers, Sandoz plays a key role in ensuring the sustainability of global healthcare systems. In addition to treating a wide range of infectious diseases, antibiotics are critical in guaranteeing patient safety during in-hospital medical procedures, including organ transplants1,2,5,” said Peter Effat, Sandoz Head of Medical Affairs.

“The Egyptian Anti-infective Stewardship Program seeks to reach 2,000 healthcare professionals nationwide in 2019-2020, with the goal of expanding awareness and sharing vital updates on the diagnosis and management of infectious diseases via various educational channels and using scientific curriculums developed by scientific associations,” explained Effat.

“The discovery of antibiotics is the greatest achievement in modern medicine. They help cure life-threatening infectious diseases such as pneumonia – especially in children and the elderly - for which there previously was no effective treatment. Some infections that now seem minor like streptococcal pharyngitis – or strep throat - used to cause heart failure and skin infections that led to amputations, while pneumonia was responsible for 30% of child mortality rates6,7,11,” said Dr. Reda Kamel, Professor of Rhinology at Cairo University and Chairman of the European Rhinologic Society “ERS”.

“If bacterial infections are not properly controlled, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that they could lead to 10 million more annual deaths by 2050. This is more than the total number of deaths from all infectious diseases worldwide in 2012, estimated at 9.5 million fatalities, including more than four million in Africa alone6,7,11,12,” added Dr. Kamel.

“Antimicrobial resistance means that the bacteria have acquired protective properties, rendering some antibiotics ineffective against a certain infection. Early and accurate diagnosis of the infection, treatment with the right antimicrobial at the correct dose, adherence to treatment duration as well as compliance with medical instructions, are crucial in helping prevent or delay antimicrobial resistance5, 10, 13, 14,” said Dr. Abdel Moety Hussein, Professor of Surgery at Cairo University, Vice President of the ESS and Head of the Surgical Site Infection Group.

“A patient’s failure to comply with the prescribed course of treatment may result in bacterial infection recurrence. Just because the symptoms of an illness have disappeared, does not mean that all germs have been killed,” he emphasized.

“We took part in this key initiative to raise awareness of the recommendations on optimal diagnosis and treatment of lower respiratory tract infections, the third-leading cause of death after heart and brain diseases,” said Dr. Adel Khattab, Professor of Pulmonary Medicine at Ain Shams University and Vice President of the ESB.

“According to the WHO, lower respiratory tract infections kill 4.2 million people each year, which exceeds the death toll of many other diseases such as AIDS, tuberculosis, meningitis, or hepatitis. In Egypt, lower respiratory tract infections were the fifth-leading cause of death in 2017 and the third-leading cause of premature death6,7,11. Pneumonia kills more people in Egypt than liver cancer and road accidents. The disease also adversely impacts students’ achievements and the country's economy as it lowers productivity. It is estimated that 50% of patients who are hospitalized and require antibiotic treatment suffer from pneumonia,” he added.

وقد أشاد بالمبادرة د. شريف علي عبد العال، استشاري طب الأطفال بكلية الطب جامعة القاهرة، والمدير التنفيذي للجمعية المصرية لطب الأطفال، قائلا: "إننا سعداء بما يشهده الوسط الطبي من حِراك فعّال ذا رؤية مستقبلية وحلم يسعى للوصول إليه من أجل مجتمعات صحية وحياة مزدهرة. ولهذا أتوجه بخالص الشكر لشركة ساندوز لتوليها رعاية هذه المبادرة غير المسبوقة والتي ضمت أربع جمعيات علمية مرموقة، تعاونت فيما بينها للتوصل إلى إجماع علمي على التوصيات الخاصة بالتشخيص والعلاج الأمثل لمجموعة مختلفة من الأمراض المعدية وعلى رأسها الالتهاب الرئوي". وأوضح أن الالتهاب الرئوي هو المسئول الأول عن الوفيات بين الأطفال تحت سن 5 سنوات والتي يحدث أغلبها في الدول النامية، حيث أصيب به 900.000 طفل في 2017 وفقًا للإحصاءات14،13،2،6. وتتكرر الإصابة بالمرض في مصر بمعدل طفل من كل 12 طفل خاصة خلال العام الأول من الولادة.

وأكد د. بيتر عفت، مدير القطاع الطبي بشركة ساندوز، على أهمية المضادات الحيوية باعتبارها ركيزة أساسية في مجال الرعاية الصحية، مشيرًا إلى الدور الذي تلعبه ساندوز بصفتها واحدة من كبرى الشركات المصنعة للمضادات الحيوية في العالم في ضمان استدامة أنظمة الرعاية الصحية العالمية. موضحًا أنه: "علاوة على دورها في علاج العديد من الأمراض المعدية، تعد المضادات الحيوية في غاية الأهمية لضمان سلامة المريض أثناء الإجراءات الطبية التي تتم داخل المستشفيات مثل عمليات زرع الأعضاء5،2،1. ويستهدف البرنامج المصري لإدارة مضادات العدوى الوصول إلى حوالي ألفين من أخصائيين الرعاية الصحية على مستوى الدولة في 2019-2020، بهدف نشر المعرفة والإلمام بآخر المستجدات حول سبل التشخيص والعلاج الأمثل لمختلف الأمراض المعدية، وهو ما سيتحقق من خلال قنوات تعليمية متنوعة باستخدام المناهج العلمية التي تطورها الجمعيات خلال الاجتماعات العلمية للبرنامج ومن خلال المواد العلمية المطبوعة أيضًا".

ومن جانبه، صرح أ. د. رضا حسين كامل، أستاذ أمراض الأنف والجيوب الأنفية بكلية طب القاهرة ورئيس الجمعية المصرية للأنف والجيوب الأنفية، بأن: "اكتشاف المضادات الحيوية يعتبر الحدث الأكبر والاكتشاف الأعظم في ميدان الطب الحديث؛ فهي تقاوم البكتيريا وتساعد في الشفاء من كثير من الأمراض المعدية الخطيرة مثل الالتهاب الرئوي وخاصة لدى الأطفال وكبار السن، بعد أن ظل من الأمراض المستعصية على مدى حقبة طويلة من الزمن. فقد كانت بعض أنواع العدوى التي تبدو الآن بسيطة، مثل التهاب اللوزتين، تسبب مضاعفات خطيرة، مثل قصور عضلة القلب أو تؤدي إلى بتر أحد أطراف الجسم، أما الالتهاب الرئوي فكان يحصد أرواح 30% من الأطفال، وتشير تقديرات منظمة الصحة العالمية أن أمراض العدوى البكتيرية قد تؤدي إلى ارتفاع وفيات البالغين بحوالي 10 مليون حالة وفاة بحلول عام 2050 إذا لم يتم السيطرة عليها، أي أعلى من إجمالي عدد الوفيات جراء الأمراض المعدية على مستوى العالم في 2012 (9.5 مليون وفاة) منهم أكثر من 4 مليون في أفريقيا فقط".11،7،6

وبحسب ما صرح به أ. د. عبد المعطي حسين، أستاذ الجراحة بكلية طب القصر العيني ونائب رئيس جمعية الجراحين المصرية ورئيس مجموعة عدوى المواضع الجراحية فإن مقاومة مضاد الميكروبات تعني عدم فعالية المضادات الحيوية ضد عدوى معينة؛ حيث تكتسب البكتيريا خاصية جديدة تحميها من المضاد الحيوي. ومن العوامل التي يمكن أن تساعد على منع أو تأخير ظهور مقاومة الميكروبات للأدوية هي التشخيص المبكر والسليم للعدوى والعلاج باستخدام مضاد الميكروبات المناسب بالجرعة المناسبة، والالتزام بمدة العلاج وتناوله وفقًا لإرشادات الطبيب. مضيفًا: "عدم التزام المرضى بالعلاج قد يؤدي إلى تكرار العدوى البكتيرية. ومن الضروري الانتباه إلى أن اختفاء أعراض المرض لا يعني بالضرورة أنه قد تم القضاء على كل الجراثيم، فقد تتسبب البكتيريا المتبقية في معاودة المرض من جديد".12،10 

وفي هذا الشأن، قال أ. د. عادل خطاب، أستاذ الأمراض الصدرية بكلية طب عين شمس، ونائب رئيس الجمعية المصرية العلمية للشعب الهوائية: "جاء اشتراكنا في هذه المبادرة الهامة من منطلق رغبتنا في المشاركة في نشر الوعي والتوصيات الخاصة بالتشخيص والعلاج الأمثل لعدوى الجهاز التنفسي السفلي، ولفت الانتباه إلى مخاطر هذه العدوى، فهي ثالث الأسباب الرئيسية للوفاة بعد أمراض القلب والمخ، حيث أفادت تقارير منظمة الصحة العالمية بأن معدلات الوفاة الناجمة عن هذا النوع من العدوى تصل إلى 4.2 مليون حالة سنويًا، وهو ما يفوق معدلات الوفاة الناتجة عن الإصابة بكثير من الأمراض الأخرى، مثل الإيدز والسل والحمى الشوكية والتهاب الكبد الوبائي"11،7،6.

وأوضح خطاب أنه في مصر تعتبر هذه العدوى هي خامس الأسباب الرئيسية للوفاة عام 2017، وثالث أسباب الوفاة المبكرة، حيث يسجل مرض الالتهاب الرئوي في مصر معدلات وفاة تتجاوز معدلات سرطان الكبد وحوادث الطرق، ومن سلبياته التأثير على مستوى التحصيل الدراسي للطلبة فضلاً عن تضرر اقتصاد البلاد نتيجة لانخفاض معدلات الإنتاج؛ إذ تشير التقديرات أن 50% من المرضى الذين يتم حجزهم في المستشفيات ويحتاجون لمضادات حيوية يعانون من الالتهاب الرئوي.

AUC TEAM WINS FIRST PLACE AT INTERNATIONAL ROBOT COMPETITION

October 10, 2019, Cairo – Five students at The American University in Cairo (AUC) won first place at the Student Mechanism and Robot Design Competition, held recently by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, in Anaheim, California. AUC's campus practically became home this summer to Mostafa Sedky, Fares Fawzi, Sarah Elfeqy, Mohamed Samy and Mariam Hegazy, all mechanical engineering seniors at the School of Sciences and Engineering who spent countless days running between labs and workshops and late nights working on the first-place robot. Out of four selected teams from around the world, AUC was represented by two teams as finalists in this competition. The AUC teams were the only ones selected from Egypt and were the first to make it to this level of the competition in 10 years. “Our hard work paying off is an amazing feeling,” Samy said. “We’re all so happy.”

Initially creating the robot for a class, the team designed it to ascend stairs so that it could help people with physical disabilities climb stairs without the help of others. After being accepted into the competition, and under the supervision of their faculty adviser Mustafa Arafa, professor and chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, the team modified the robot to be able to walk, granting it the ability to be used for a wide number of applications. The technology of the robot provides the base for extending its function to surgical robotic arms or using it as a search and rescue machine. The team focused on stability and efficiency to stand out among the other competitors.

“We shifted the whole idea from just being able to climb stairs to something we can continue to innovate,” Sedky said.

It took two months of designing, creating parts and prototyping, then one month of building before the final prototype was ready.

“The workshop for mechanical engineers had everything, and we used the Robotics Club for late-night stays. We had everything we needed on campus,” Elfeqy said.

With a fully functioning walking robot, the team headed to California in late August to compete. However, once they reached their hotel room and pulled out the machine, they found that all its parts had been fried due to scanners at the airport. In a city they were unfamiliar with, they scrambled to find parts and rebuild the prototype. They spent the whole day gathering pieces and eight hours at night rebuilding, finishing just in time for the competition the next day.

Nonetheless, they built it just as well the second time as they did the first. When they found out they won first place, the team members said it felt surreal. They expressed their gratitude to the Undergraduate Research Program for funding and to AUC for making everything they needed accessible.

"It was hard at times, but we had a lot of fun, and we're so excited," Sedky said.

القاهرة في 10 أكتوبر 2019- - للعام الثاني علي التوالي، يعود مركز الفنون بفندق جراند نايل تاور لجمهور الفن ومحبيه بمجموعة من الشراكات والفعاليات يقدم من خلالها مجموعة متنوعة من الأنشطة الفنية تهدف إلى إرضاء الأذواق الموسيقية المتنوعة والذي يبدأ منتصف أكتوبر. 

ويتعاون مركز جراند نايل للفنون مع مؤسسة السلطان قايتباي والتي تعد من أوائل شركاء المركز وتهدف الشراكة إلى إقامة فعاليات دورية تتنوع بين حفلات موسيقية ومعارض فنية في كل من مقعد السلطان قايتباي ومقر الفندق. كما تقدم المؤسسة جولات سياحية لزوار الفندق تمتاز بطابع خاص بين كنوز القاهرة المعمارية القديمة بشرق القاهرة.

واستكمالاً للنجاح المثمر بين مركز جراند نايل للفنون ومهرجان الموسيقى الكلاسيكية في قصر المنيل في دورته الأولي، يتعاون كلاً من المركز والمهرجان في دورته الجديدة والتي تقام في الفترة بين يومي 28 أكتوبر و9 نوفمبر تحت رعاية فندق جراند نايل تاور ويتنوع البرنامج الفني بين ألوان الموسيقى الكلاسيكية الأوروبية والشرق آسيوية والشرقية بالإضافة لتقديم تعاونات موسيقية جديدة. 

أما آخر المفاجأت التي يقدمها مركز جراند نايل للفنون في دورته الجديدة فهي عودة الحفلات الاسبوعية التي تبدأ بحلول منتصف أكتوبر بالتعاون مع الشريك المنظم للحفلات أوت لاود. وتهدف الشراكة لتقديم برنامج شهري من الحفلات الموسيقية في مواقع متميزة داخل الفندق تسمح للحضور الاستمتاع بموقع الفندق الساحر أثناء الحفل.

تجدر الإشارة أنّ مركز جراند نايل للفنون والثقافة انطلق لأول مرة في 2018، في إطار مبادرات المسئولية الاجتماعية والمؤسسية للفندق، حيث يتيح للفنانين المستقلين والمواهب الشابة فرصة ثمينة لتقديم عروضهم في مكان يتمتع بشهرة واسعة.

The hotel will mark the return of the Hyatt brand to Egypt’s capital city of Cairo




DUBAI (October 8, 2019) – Hyatt Hotels Corporation (NYSE: H) announced today that a Hyatt affiliate has entered into a franchise agreement with ALDAU Development group for a Hyatt-branded hotel in Cairo. Hyatt Regency Cairo West, set to open in the last quarter of 2020, will mark the return of the Hyatt brand to the capital of Egypt. The hotel joins Hyatt Regency Sharm El Sheikh and will further add to Hyatt’s growing brand footprint in North Africa.




Situated within the well-established Pyramids Heights Business Park, the hotel will provide the perfect setting for business and leisure travelers, as well as meetings and events. Its location will be in close proximity to diverse corporations, landmarks, malls, and popular leisure and cultural attractions such as the Pyramids of Giza, and soon, the Grand Egyptian Museum and Giza Sphinx International Airport.

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.

Depression is a common mental disorder. Globally, more than 300 million people of all ages suffer from depression, the World Health Organization (WHO) advises, and depression and anxiety costs the world economy an estimated US$ 1 trillion a year in lost productivity.
