Gartner Says Samsung and Apple Extended Their Lead as Top Global Semiconductor Customers in 2017
Top 10 OEMs to Account for More Than 45 Percent of Global Semiconductor Spending by 2021
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – 30 January 2018 — Samsung Electronics and Apple remained the top two semiconductor chip buyers in 2017, representing 19.5 percent of the total worldwide market, according to Gartner, Inc. Samsung and Apple together consumed $81.8 billion of semiconductors in 2017, an increase of more than $20 billion from 2016.
"Samsung Electronics and Apple not only retained their respective No. 1 and No. 2 positions, they also radically increased their share of semiconductor spending through 2017," said Masatsune Yamaji, principal research analyst at Gartner "These two companies have held on to the top positions since 2011 and they continue to exert significant influence on technology and price trends for the whole semiconductor industry."
Eight of the top 10 companies in 2016 remained in the top 10 in 2017, with the top five chip buyers remaining in the same positions (see Table 1). LG Electronics returned to the top 10 and was joined by newcomer Western Digital, which grew its semiconductor spending by $1.7 billion in 2017. BBK Electronics rose one place to sixth position, increasing its semiconductor spending by $5.7 billion.

A significant price increase of DRAM and NAND flash memory had a big impact on semiconductor buyers' ranking through 2017. Most original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), even the big ones, could not avoid the risk of a memory chip shortage and rise of memory prices through 2017. Supply shortages occurred not just in the memory IC market, but also in other semiconductor chip markets, such as microcontrollers and discrete, as well as in the passive component market, which benefited the suppliers but troubled the OEMs. On the other hand, successful OEMs are often differentiating their products with their own captive silicon solutions. The increase in OEMs' captive chip spending is a great risk for commercial chip vendors' future growth.
Semiconductor spending by the top 10 OEMs increased significantly, and their share reached 40 percent of the total semiconductor market in 2017, up from 31 percent 10 years ago. This trend is expected to continue, and Gartner predicts that, by 2021, the top 10 OEMs will account for more than 45 percent of total global semiconductor spending.
"With the top 10 semiconductor chip buyers commanding an increasing share of the market, technology product marketing leaders at chip vendors must focus on their leading customers," said Mr. Yamaji. "They will need to prioritize direct sales and technical support resources to these top customers by exploiting online technical support capabilities and outsourcing the support for long-tail customers to third-party partners and distributors."

AUC CONTRIBUTES HASSAN FATHY ARCHIVES FOR RESTORATION OF NEW GOURNA
January 29, 2018, Cairo – Archives from the Hassan Fathy Collection have recently surfaced to the spotlight from the Rare Books and Special Collections Library at The American University in Cairo (AUC) to guide the restoration of New Gourna in Luxor City – Fathy’s most famous project and now a World Heritage Site. Built between 1946 and 1949, the New Gourna village has experienced significant deterioration in recent decades, inspiring several plans for its restoration that have not come to fruition until now. This UNESCO-sponsored project, however, is set to succeed in preserving Hassan Fathy’s well-known experiment at constructing an ideal village, a plan that perfectly embodies the innovative architect’s mission and values. With the help of AUC’s Rare Books and Special Collections Library and the backing of UNESCO, the National Organization for Urban Harmony was able to concretize plans for revival of the site and restoration of its buildings, guided by the original drawings, documents and images from AUC’s Hassan Fathy Collection. “We’re happy to see the Hassan Fathy Collection used for restoration purposes,” said Ola Seif, assistant director and curator for photography in the Rare Books and Special Collections Library. “For the past 10 years, it has been a wonderful source for many researchers worldwide, and soon, AUC Press will publish a thoroughly researched book titled Hassan Fathy in His Time. So the collection is really being explored as Hassan Fathy would have liked it to be, and to serve the purposes of his architectural ideology.” Considered one of the first architects to make “appropriate technology” a principle of designing modern buildings, Fathy constructed the New Gourna village around the unique needs of its inhabitants. In the process, he was able to assist in relocating an entire community that had previously been living near archeological Pharaonic sites. To build a “better village,” Fathy used local materials and traditional mud bricks, thereby empowering those in need to build their own affordable housing and reflecting the community’s connection with its environment. The Rare Books and Special Collections Library was also central in curating an exhibition for the project’s launch event that was recently held at the Cairo Citadel. Through photographic archives, the exhibition traced the original construction of the village and Fathy’s architectural style, paying homage to his vision for New Gourna. The final segment of the photographic gallery presented digital images that offered a peek into plans for reconstruction of some of the New Gourna buildings. Tarek Waly, CEO of the Tarek Waly Center and consultant for the restoration project, also introduced the main strategies for restoration. Additionally, Ghaith Fariz, director of UNESCO Regional Bureau for Sciences in the Arab States, spoke to the significance of Fathy’s architecture and ideology. The first stage of the project will tackle the village khan and mosque. Later stages will move on to rehabilitating the theater, marketplace, Fathy’s residence, the village hall and main square, with plans to also increase the efficiency of the roads approaching the site. The project involves plans to reuse the buildings according to the needs of the villagers, with the possibility of converting some areas into artist studios, a cultural center, a center for youth and, potentially, a training center to continue communicating Fathy’s mission and methods. World’s largest gold ring goes on display at the Sahara Centre
Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, 28 January 2018: Sahara Centre, Sharjah’s leading retail, entertainment and leisure destination, is proud to be displaying the world’s largest gold ring, Najmat Taiba (Star of Taiba), for the pleasure of its discerning visitors. Customers at the mall will enjoy an exclusive opportunity to view the USD 3 million masterpiece as it becomes Sharjah’s star attraction this month.
The 21-carat Najmat Taiba, which has been recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records and endorsed by the World Gold Council, weighs almost 64 kilograms (141 pounds) and is studded with 5.1 kilograms (11 pounds) of precious stones and diamonds, as well as 615 Swarovski crystals. 55 jewel smiths worked for 10 hours a day for 45 days to craft the ring, which is owned by Dubai-based company Taiba and has been put on display by Rossella Jewellery.
The Najmat Taiba cost its owner only $547,000 to make back in 2000, when gold was priced at about $250 an ounce. Gold prices has since soared and are now trading high at about $1,497.50 on today’s market, giving the ring an immense value estimated at USD 3 million.
Gold and jewellery enthusiasts are encouraged to make their way to the ground floor of the original Sahara Centre, opposite the Rossella Jewellery shop, where they can indulge their penchant for luxury with a glimpse of the Najmat Taiba.
