GSMA Mobile Connectivity Index Highlights United Arab Emirates as Mobile Internet Leader

Latest GSMA Mobile Connectivity Index Tracks Global Progress on Mobile Internet Adoption
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates-- (BUSINESS WIRE/ AETOS Wire)-- The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has increased its overall score on the GSMA Mobile Connectivity Index by five points over the last two years, according to new data published today at the GSMA Mobile 360 – Middle East and North Africa event in Dubai. Between 2014 and 2016, the UAE demonstrated progress across all four enablers for mobile internet adoption as measured by the Mobile Connectivity Index: infrastructure; affordability; consumer readiness; and content. Its overall score over the two-year period increased from 67 to 72, well above the global (59) and regional (58) averages. The new data forms part of the latest edition of the Mobile Connectivity Index, which is now available at www.mobileconnectivityindex.com and includes data on 150 countries worldwide.
“The UAE added around half a million new mobile internet subscribers between 2014 and 2016, which means that almost 80 per cent of the country’s population is now using mobile devices to access the internet, underlining the UAE’s position as one of the most advanced markets in the world in terms of mobile internet adoption,” said Jawad Abbassi, Head of MENA region at the GSMA. “This improvement was driven particularly by increasing mobile network quality and the availability of more locally relevant mobile apps and social media content.”
Progress on Delivering a Global Mobile Internet Platform
On a global basis, the average Mobile Connectivity Index score increased six points to 59 between 2014 and 2016. At the end of last year, there were approximately 3.5 billion mobile internet subscribers, representing just under half of the global population. Improvements in the global score have been driven by the development of more relevant content in local languages; better infrastructure (particularly network coverage and quality), assisted by the availability of more spectrum; and more affordable devices and mobile data services. However, despite progress over the last two years, more than half of the world’s population – around 4 billion people – remain offline and are excluded from the powerful opportunities for social and economic development that the mobile internet enables.

Measuring Market Foundations for Mobile Internet Adoption
The GSMA’s Mobile Connectivity Index is designed to support the efforts of the mobile industry and the wider international community to deliver on the ambition of universal access to the internet. The Index has recently been updated to include 2016 data and a range of new features, including improved indicators to measure the affordability of mobile services and the creation of content. The web tool also now offers users the opportunity to compare country scores over time.
The Index now measures the performance of 150 countries, representing 98 per cent of the world’s population. It measures markets on each of the four key enablers and produces an overall composite score, which reflects the strength of the foundations to support widespread adoption of the mobile internet. The four key enablers are:
  • Infrastructure – the availability and quality of high performance mobile internet network coverage. Without network coverage, people cannot get online, and without high-performing networks it is more difficult to access the full potential of the internet.
  • Affordability – the availability of mobile services and devices at price points that reflect the level of income across a national population. Aside from prices and incomes, affordability is also affected by the level of taxation, as well as inequality – if income distribution is skewed towards a small proportion of the population, the mobile internet will remain unaffordable for many people.
  • Consumer Readiness – citizens with the awareness and skills needed to value and use the internet. Without the necessary skills and supporting cultural environment, individuals may not understand how to use the mobile internet or appreciate how it can benefit them. Some individuals, especially women, might also find themselves prevented from accessing the mobile internet in some countries.
  • Content – the availability of online content and services that are accessible and relevant to the local population. Consumers are less likely to connect to the mobile internet unless there is online content and services that are relevant and would be of benefit to them. This might be as simple as having content in their native language or it might be the availability of certain apps or services such as social media, banking or education.

The Mobile Connectivity Index allows users to explore in detail the performance of individual countries, compare countries against each other, and investigate the different dimensions and indicators that feed into each of the enablers. The free-to-use tool is accessible at www.mobileconnectivityindex.com.

Sophos Launches Cloud Security Provider Program at GITEX 2017

Expands Global Channel Program to Enable Partners to Become Cloud Security Providers
  • New training and incentive program for partners selling Sophos security solutions for public cloud
  • Sophos Server Protection now available for Microsoft Azure
  • Meet Sophos at GITEX , Stand D1-10, Hall 1
Dubai, UAE, October 9– Sophos (LSE: SOPH), a global leader in network and endpoint security, today announced that it has expanded its Partner Program to now offer training, certification and financial incentives that will help channel partners support customers using or migrating to the public cloud. Sophos is the first next-gen security vendor to introduce a program specifically designed to help partners address this revenue growth opportunity and make the purchase of its products in Microsoft’s Azure or Amazon Web Services (AWS) marketplaces channel-friendly. According to Gartner, Inc., the worldwide public cloud services market is projected to grow 18 percent in 2017 and is expected to reach $383.3 billion by 2020.
Sophos also announced Sophos Server Protection is now available for Azure. When used with Sophos XG Firewall on Azure, Sophos Synchronized Security technology will coordinate defenses against cyber threats attacking multiple vectors, including Virtual Machines (VMs) running in Azure.
“Partners in the Middle East & Africa see a big opportunity to help customers secure their public cloud deployments and they want to continue to receive the same benefits that they get through traditional sales models set up with their vendor partner programs. Sophos is paving the way for this to happen and created a new program that delivers the same type of partner program benefits to partners selling Sophos solutions into public cloud deployments,” said Harish Chib, vice president, Middle East & Africa. “As customers in the Middle East & Africa region increasingly adopt cloud computing – either all-at-once or methodically over time – partners need a strategic business model that includes innovative security technology, reliable vendor training and support, and financial incentives. As a channel-only company, Sophos is committed to accelerating partner success and revenue growth with cloud security. This is a great opportunity for partners to become specialized as Sophos Cloud Security Providers and benefit from today’s growing billion dollar cloud marketplace.”
As Sophos Cloud Security Providers, partners will be able to build-up their technical expertise to better recommend how customers evolve to cloud deployments with the right security products. While Microsoft and Amazon manage security for their respective cloud infrastructures, businesses are expected to secure what they bring to cloud. By working with Sophos, partners can play an important advisory role on what customers need whether they are newly migrating, are all-in or have a hybrid scenario. Sophos will also work with partners to maximize Bring-Your-Own-License (BYOL) or Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) purchasing and deployment options for their customers.
Benefits as a Sophos Cloud Security Provider include:
  • Increased partner margin through rebates when customers buy Sophos products that are available on Azure and AWS cloud marketplaces
  • Revenue from BYOL deals that apply in the cloud environment
  • Sales and pipeline lead generation from Sophos free product trials and PAYG testing
  • Training and support from Sophos Security Architects who specialize in cloud security and migration
  • Certification as a Sophos Cloud Security Provider, which is available in two tiers: Professional level for partners who focus on consulting and selling services and Expert level for those who also have deployment services for customers
  • Enhanced lead sharing for partners certified at the Expert level, due to their ability to provide pre- and post-sales support as customers deploy, run and manage applications in Azure or AWS

At GITEX Epson demonstrates the importance of choosing business inkjet printers over laser printing technology

Dubai, UAE; October 09, 2017 – At GITEX Technology Week 2017, Epson Middle East is aiming to create greater awareness among regional businesses about the benefits of switching from laser to business inkjet printers by highlighting to visitors its vast range of environment friendly, cost saving, energy efficient Inkjet printers.

According to Jason Whiley, director of sales, Epson Middle East: “Our global research confirms that businesses are still reliant on printing for realising a more productive and efficient workforce, therefore it’s crucial for companies to consider the implications the right purchasing decisions will have on their company. The benefits of inkjet technology are the ones we are striving to share with our customers: cost reduction, increased productivity, lower environmental impact.”

Choosing energy efficient printers and Multifunction printers (MFP) is a key area where businesses can reduce costs and improve their sustainability credentials. In addition to reduced running costs, inkjet printing comes the added benefit of lowering, giving businesses added appeal to investors, customers and the supply chain.

Whiley adds: “By failing to implement sustainable print measures, businesses are missing out on opportunities to lower consumables costs, reduce energy usage and boost productivity.”

The latest business inkjet technology has evolved from advanced industrial inkjet technology, scaled to support workgroup printers. As such it has reached points of affordability, speed, quality and consumable life that makes it an increasingly attractive proposition for small and large businesses alike. This is boosting momentum in the market, with IDC estimating that the business inkjet market will grow by a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.2% over the period 2015 to 2020.

Independent tests carried out by Buyers Laboratory LLC (BLI), compared Epson’s Business Inkjet solutions (WorkForce Pro (WFP) and WorkForce Pro Replaceable Ink Pack System (RIPS)) to competitive laser printers and copiers, and demonstrated how far inkjet technology has come, putting the following six common misconceptions to rest:

  1. MYTH: “Inkjet technology is more expensive than laser”
FACT: With inkjet technology, customers get up to four and a half times more prints with two cartridges per colour compared to laser printers
    • Up to twice as many prints with WFP models than competitive colour lasers
    • Up to four and a half times more prints with WFP Replaceable Ink Pack System (RIPS) models than colour lasers and copiers

  1. MYTH: “Laser printers are more productive than inkjet technology”
FACT: Inkjets are up to three and a half times faster than lasers for first page out and could cut time spent on interventions by up to two-thirds
  • WFP models are up to three and a half times faster than lasers and colour copiers for first page out
  • WFP models are up to one and a half times faster than colour lasers and copiers  for typical business print jobs of a few pages
  • WFP models could cut time spent on interventions by up to two-thirds compared to lasers
  • WFP RIPS models can cut time spent on user interventions by up to 100% compared to colour lasers and laser copiers on a run of 40,000 prints

  1. MYTH: “Laser printers offer ‘better quality printing’ than inkjet technology”
FACT: Inkjet technology delivers professional output quality by precisely controlling the ink droplet shape and volume
  • Inkjet printers with PrecisionCore have up to triple the nozzle density of conventional piezo printheads with native output at either 600 or 720 dpi per print chip

  1. MYTH: “Inkjet technology is noisy”
FACT: Inkjet printers are up to 18% quieter than lasers
  • WFP models are up to 18% (29.42 dBA) quieter than lasers and laser copiers

  1. MYTH: “Inkjet technology is less reliable than laser technology”
FACT: Inkjet printers require less frequent intervention than laser printers, making them more reliable
  • WFP models are ‘Reliability Certified’ by BLI, with up to 75,000 impressions without a misfeed and no service calls

  1. MYTH: “Inkjet technology is not eco-friendly”
FACT: Inkjet technology can cut most waste associated with printing and uses up to 82% less energy than lasers
  • WFP models produce up to 95% (or 77 kilograms) less waste than lasers and laser copiers when printing up to 80,000 pages
  • WFP models use up to 82% less energy than lasers and laser copiers
