Masdar Institute wins ‘TRL Student Award’ at Gulf Traffic 2016

World's first graduate-level university recognized for their Bus Oriented Development project

TRL (Transport Research Laboratory), the global centre for innovation in transport and mobility, has awarded the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology (Masdar Institute), with the 'TRL Student Award' during this year's edition of Gulf Traffic, which was recently held at the Dubai World Trade Centre. The award was given in recognition of Masdar Institute’s Bus Oriented Development (BOD) project and was received by Allan Ribeiro Pimenta, Asim Khanal, and Jean Phelippe Ramos de Oliveira, during the awards night held on the side-lines of Gulf Traffic 2016.

According to TRL senior executives, the ‘TRL Student Award’ is aimed at tapping into the creative skills of today’s younger generation in order to help solve practical, real-life problems while also helping the country in its move towards more growth and development. The team from Masdar Institute bested out entries from other universities in the UAE like Heriot Watt University (Intelligent Parking System) and American University - Dubai (Optimizing the Dubai Public Transport System to meet the needs of the growing population).

The winning submission was cited for its research on how the Abu Dhabi transportation system can become an example of sustainable mobility. The study recommended some key solutions on how the emirate's transport system can be improved--including BRT Oriented Development, segmentation of busses, enhancement of an existing customer information mobile app and the marketization of public busses. The recommendations are seen as likely solutions to help create a more effective public transportation service.

جامعة الدراسات العليا الأولى في العالم تحظى بتكريم على مشروعها "التنمية الموجهة نحو النقل بالحافلات"

وقد أفاد كبار المسؤولين في "مختبر أبحاث النقل – تي أر آل" أن "جائزة تي أر آل للطلبة" تهدف إلى الاستفادة من مهارات جيل شباب اليوم وأفكاره المبتكرة في إيجاد حلول عملية وواقعية لمشاكل النقل مما يعزز جهود الدولة في مسيرتها نحو النمو والتطور. وقد تفوق فريق معهد مصدر في هذا المشروع على المشاريع التي قدمتها الجامعات الأخرى في دولة الإمارات ومنها جامعة هيريوت وات (نظام وقوف السيارات الذكي) والجامعة الأمريكية في دبي (تحسين نظام النقل العام في دبي لتلبية احتياجات النمو السكاني).  

وتمّيز المشروع الفائز بأبحاثه حول الطرق المتاحة لجعل نظام النقل في أبوظبي مثالاً يحتذى به للتنقل المستدام. وأوصت الدراسة ببعض الحلول الرئيسية حول كيفية تحسين نظام النقل في الإمارة - بما في ذلك التنمية الموجهة نحو دعم النقل بالحافلات السريعة وتجزئة مسارات الحافلات وتطوير تطبيقات الهواتف المتحركة الحالية الخاصة ببيانات العميل إلى جانب الترويج لاستخدام الحافلات العامة. وتعتبر هذه التوصيات بمثابة حلول محتملة من شأنها المساعدة على تعزيز فعالية خدمة النقل العام .

لويس موانيه السويسرية تدخل موسوعة غينيس للأرقام القياسية كأول مخترع للكرونوغراف

قامت منظمة غينيس للأرقام القياسية بتكريم لويس موانيه بوصفها مخترع أول كرونوغراف حيث منحت المؤسسة العلامة السويسرية لقب "أول كرونوغراف"، عقب عملية مرهقة من البحث المضني والتحقيقات التي استغرق ما يقرب من ستة أشهر.

وبتكريم لويس موانيه كمنشئ لأول كرونوغراف فقد أكدت مؤسسة غينيس للأرقام القياسية حقيقة ما كان يُعرف في عالم الساعات الراقية وهو أن لويس موانيه هو أول من اخترع الكرونوغراف في 1816 بـ "عداده الثلاثي".

وقال جون ماري شولر، الرئيس التنفيذي في لويس موانيه: "نحن في غاية السعادة بهذا التكريم في عام خاص جدا نحتفل فيه بالمئوية الثانية لاختراع الكرونوغراف (1816 -2016). إن حقيقة أن لويس موانيه هو الأب للكرونوغراف – حيث اخترعه عام 1816 – حقيقة لا تقبل أي جدال، ويعلمها جيدا عشاق الساعات الفاخرة. إن اللقب الذي تمنحه مؤسسة موسوعة غينيس للأرقام القياسية الآن ينتقل بالأمور إلى المستوى التالي حيث يفتح الطريق لمزيد من التعريف العام بشركتنا ويوفر لنا شهرة حول العالم تعبر الحدود وتمتد لما وراء عالم هواة الساعات الفاخرة".

Trump’s presidency casts doubt on US renewable energy prospects, says GlobalData

London – 23 November 2016

With the election of Donald Trump as president of the US, the country’s domestic energy policy is poised to witness the reversal of a number of major environmental policies of outgoing President Barack Obama, leaving the renewable energy sector at risk, according to research and consulting firm GlobalData.

The company’s latest analysis states that clean energy investors are worried that the new president will put renewable energy sources in jeopardy by moving away from Obama’s Clean Power Plan and exiting the Paris agreement. Indeed, a number of US solar companies have already witnessed a decline in stock value, including First Solar and SunPower Corporation, while coal stocks have received a boost.

Previously, GlobalData projected that renewables excluding hydropower would be the fastest growing power source in the US, increasing to an installed capacity of 216 Gigawatts by 2025, but this is subject to change depending on the new government’s energy policies.

Sneha Susan Elias, GlobalData’s Analyst covering Power, explains: “Obama’s Clean Power Plan was an historic measure aimed at reducing carbon emissions from power plants and working towards addressing climate change.

“By stark contrast, Trump has expressed skepticism about climate change and voiced his opposition towards environmental regulation during the election campaign, pledging to exit from the Paris climate change agreement and focus on boosting energy production from coal, oil, and natural gas. Trump stated plans to reinforce the US coal, oil, and shale industries, thus leading to oil and gas development on federal lands while stepping up drilling activity in the Atlantic Ocean and other blocked areas.”

Both China and the US, which lead the world in CO2 emissions, ratified the Paris climate change agreement on September 3, 2016. With the US aiming to decrease its greenhouse gas emissions by 26-28% from 2005 levels by 2025 under the agreement, it remains to be seen whether this plan will be realized.

Elias notes: “The Paris agreement became law on November 4, 2016, prior to the naming of the new US president, and this could make things difficult for Trump’s campaign pledge to revoke the country’s inclusion in the contract.

"While Trump’s plans are potentially harmful to the renewable energy industry, there is no clear picture of his manifesto yet and, since he does not hold any record of public service, uncertainty prevails regarding his policies and their consequences for clean energy, climate, and the environment.”
