Dubai Serves as Hub for Southeast Asian Digital Companies Expanding to Emerging Markets

Southeast Asian Tech Companies Boost UAE-Singapore Bi-Lateral Trade to USD 13.5 Billion, Says International Enterprise Singapore

Online-Exclusive Product Launches and Digital Customer Platforms Among Southeast Asian Marketing Innovations Unilever International Presents at GITEX Technology Week;

Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Dubai is increasingly the hub for Southeast Asian innovators expanding to emerging markets in the Middle East and Africa, according to experts speaking at GITEX Technology Week.

Thanks to increasing purchasing power, Internet penetration, and online offerings, the ASEAN e-commerce market is set to grow more than nine-fold from USD 7 billion in 2013 to more than USD 67 billion by 2017, according to a recent report by consultancy AT Kearney. [1]

This market growth presents a strong opportunity for digital marketing firms and startups to expand their innovations from Southeast Asia and localise them to emerging markets. Many of these firms are based in Singapore, a major business hub and the top Southeast Asian city for startup support, according to a recent ranking by the Compass Startup Ecosystem. [2]

“Singapore’s digital-first companies and startups need to expand quickly, and emerging markets such as the Middle East, Africa, and Asia present the biggest growth opportunities,” said Aseem Puri, the Singapore-based Marketing Head at Unilever International.

He headlined the digital marketing conference GITEX Marketing Monday, part of the wider Vertical Days programme on how technology impacts different industry verticals.

Aseem Puri represents the best of Singapore-based digital marketing innovations. In his role, he launches and builds Unilever brands across new geographies, channels, and customers. Among the innovations he has led are e-commerce-exclusive launches and building a global customer relationship management platform for online direct marketing.

Now, Southeast Asia’s multinationals and startups are turning to Dubai for expansion. For example, the UAE is Singapore’s largest Middle East trading partner, with trade reaching S$ 18.3 (about USD 13.5) billion in 2015, according to International Enterprise Singapore.

“Digital marketing innovations that work in Singapore hold high potential in Dubai and the Arabian Gulf, with similar fast-growth markets, digitally-savvy English-speaking affluent customers, and a supportive startup ecosystem,” added Aseem Puri.

At GITEX Marketing Monday, fellow digital marketing innovators from AkzoNobel, Caesars Entertainment, Facebook, LinkedIn are addressing topics such as mobile marketing, the hyper-personal customer experience, and the augmented reality brand experience.

GITEX Technology Week and UAE Serve as Global Startup Hubs

Organisers of GITEX Technology Week, which is set to host more than 4,000 exhibiting companies, 64 participating countries, 230 speakers, and more than 410 startups from 60 countries this year, are tapping into Singapore’s experience, especially in regard to their support of digital marketing best practices for Middle East companies and startups.

GITEX Technology Week consistently attracts a strong showing by international tech companies, from global corporations to niche brands, drawn by its unique access to emerging markets from Africa, throughout the Middle East, to Central and South Asia.
The UAE is increasingly becoming a global startup hub. The government of Dubai recently launched the Dubai Future Accelerators, which provides a 12-week programme to bring together top companies, entrepreneurs, and partners to develop technology innovations.

Siemens honors Thanaweya Amma top achievers, hosts learning trip to Germany

  • Students to learn about innovative engineering and career opportunities
  • Siemens CEO in Egypt engages in an open dialogue with the students

To inspire the next generation of Egyptian talents and introduce them to the world of engineering, Siemens is hosting 35 students of the Thanaweya Amma top achievers – the equivalent of high school in Egypt – on a learning trip to Germany. During the trip, students, from across the country, will tour the company’s facilities and learn about innovative engineering technologies and career opportunities; while gaining a better understanding of the skills necessary for today’s manufacturing industry.
During the five-day trip, taking place from October 17-21, 2016, the students will be given the opportunity to tour Siemens Fortuna power plant, one of the world’s most energy efficient power plants, located in Düsseldorf, Germany. On the walking tours inside Siemens Gas and Steam Turbine Factories, in Mülheim and Berlin, students will view the production of steam and gas turbines and generators while learning about power generation and transmission systems.
“There is a substantial shortage of skilled labor to fill the various roles in Egypt’s modern infrastructure. As an engineering company, we feel it’s important to show students the wide variety of career paths in the engineering industry and the talent that is needed to fill those opportunities,” said Emad Ghaly, CEO of Siemens Egypt. “Our commitment is intended to fascinate these talented young people by technology, and to make technical specialties more interesting to them.”

Ahead of their visit to Germany, Ghaly met with some of the students for a two-hour open dialogue that addressed several topics, such as different career paths, future life aspirations and entrepreneurship.

As part of the agenda, students will also visit the Siemens Education Center in Hanover where they will have the opportunity to speak with other students and various technical professionals to hear about their careers as engineers, machine operators, programmers and service professionals.

Ali Abdullah, the student of the Faculty of Petroleum and Mining Engineering, Suez Canal University, described the trip as “a very good opportunity to have a better feeling of a real-life factory environment”. He added: “I have just joined the Faculty of Petroleum and Mining Engineering, and I think it’s very important for an engineer to have a first-hand experience through such a trip. It is very useful to see the factories and operating machinery, not just learn about them.”

As one of the biggest private training enterprises, during fiscal year 2014/2015, Siemens employed around 10,000 trainees and students on cooperative study.
