AUC TO ORGANIZE THE EGYPTIAN SURREALISTS EXHIBITION WITH SHARJAH ART FOUNDATION AND THE MINISTRY OF CULTURE
WHAT
An international touring exhibition, “When Art Becomes Liberty: The Egyptian Surrealists (1938-1965),” organized by Sharjah Art Foundation, the Ministry of Culture Egypt, Sector of Fine Arts, and the American University in Cairo. The exhibition focuses on the evolution of the Egyptian Surrealist group and their relationship with their Western and international counterparts. It also documents a pivotal chapter of modernism in Egypt that spans from the late 1930s to the early 1960s and highlights the multifaceted aspects of modernity and its global interconnectedness in the 20th century.
More than 150 works have been brought together, many for the first time, including substantial loans from important Egyptian public and private collections that have never before been toured outside of the country.
The exhibition is curated by Hoor Al Qasimi, Sharjah Art Foundation president; Salah M. Hassan, Goldwin Smith professor and director, Institute for Comparative Modernities, Cornell University; Ehab Ellaban, Ufuq Gallery, Cairo and Nagla Samir, associate professor of arts, The American University in Cairo.

AUC STUDENT NOURAN GOHAR CROWNED WORLD JUNIOR SQUASH CHAMPION
September 27, 2016, Cairo – For the second consecutive year, Nouran Gohar, construction engineering sophomore and the first recipient of the Wadi Degla Scholarship at The American University in Cairo (AUC), came in first at the World Squash Federation’s World Junior Squash Championships held in Poland last month. Ranking fourth globally, Gohar is the fourth woman worldwide to win this global championship more than once. “Winning the World Junior Squash Championships title last year was a big achievement for me; winning it for the second year is a dream come true,” said Gohar. “I am thankful for AUC’s support because it has believed in my academic and sports capabilities all the way.”
Only 18 years old, Gohar is dominating the squash courts. Last month, she earned first place at the Hong Kong Squash Open 2016, defeating 10-time Malaysian champion Nicol David and the highest ranking American squash player Amanda Sobhy. Gohar’s outstanding performance was also witnessed at the 2016 China Squash Open held in September, where she won third place; the 2016 Women’s Allam British Open Squash Championship, where she was runner-up to Egyptian squash player Nour El Sherbini; and at the 2016 Professional Squash Association (PSA) Dubai World Series Finals, earning first lead to the Dubai PSA Grand Finale to be held in June 2017. She is also a three-time winner of the British Junior Open, one of the most prestigious tournaments worldwide for junior players.
In Egypt, Gohar has been declared a national champion in all age groups (under 11,13,15,17 and 19). At AUC, she competed in the National Universities Tournament last spring and won a gold medal. “I was really pleased to represent AUC during the tournament,” she said. “I really wanted to win this title to make my University proud. It was a great feeling to earn a gold medal in my first University tournament.”
With her father playing squash as a hobby and her mother a table tennis champion, Gohar was influenced from an early age to become athletically active. “I started playing squash at the age of 8 and began taking part in competitions when I was 10 years old,” she recalled.
In addition to squash, Gohar’s interest in engineering also developed from her father, who is a mechanical engineer. “Growing up, I have always observed my father designing and developing mechanical systems,” she said. “This is one of the reasons why I feel more inclined toward scientific learning.”
Balancing her passion for squash with her academic studies is not easy, but Gohar said that the opportunity to study at “the best University in Egypt” with a full scholarship and pursue her goals as an athlete pushes her to prioritize her needs. “There is no doubt that I want to become the world’s number one squash player,” she affirmed. “However, I need to be equally committed to my studies because a degree will always grant me a career. It’s all about planning and finding the right balance that works for you.”
For Gohar, not only has AUC given her extraordinary academic support, but it has also admired and celebrated her success as a professional athlete. “The Wadi Degla Scholarship is one of the main reasons I stayed in Egypt rather than leaving my family behind and studying abroad,” she said. “It helped me make the decision of majoring in the field I’m interested while also pursuing my dream of becoming the best female squash player. AUC’s faculty members and departments appreciate my efforts and are always willing to help me maintain an excellent performance in the classroom.”
Gohar is all geared up for her next tournaments – the U.S. Open, to be held in Philadelphia from October 6 to 15; and Women’s World Championship in Paris, where she will be traveling with Egyptian national women’s team, to be held from November 25 to December 3.

Starting September 15, MAXXI, together with Deutsche Bank, is presenting the first solo exhibition in Italy devoted to Basim Magdy, who was honoured Deutsche Bank’s “Artist of the Year” 2016, an annual award for emerging or mid-career artists who have distinguished themselves for their creativity and the significance of their work.
The exhibition, entitled The Stars Were Aligned for a Century of New Beginnings, was inaugurated last April at the Deutsche Bank Kunsthalle in Berlin and, after MAXXI, it will move to the Museum of Contemporary Art of Chicago.
The Basim Magdy exhibition at MAXXI is part of Expanding the Horizon, a new initiative promoted by the museum to further develop its global ambitions and explore a new form of public space generated by the collaboration between the museum and other institutions and private collections.
Over 30 works, including films, projections, photographs, paintings and installations from 2006 to 2016, comprise the exhibition, co-curated by Britta Färber, Chief Curator of Deutsche Bank and Anne Palopoli, Curator of MAXXI.

We have found in MAXXI the perfect partner to promote current art tendencies and forward-looking positions, in a common and constant search of reflection and inspiration.”
The Stars Were Aligned for a Century of New Beginnings initially sounds optimistic. In the exhibition, Basim Magdy plays ironically and humorously with a constantly changing cycle of hopes, utopias, and defeats.
While the artist, who was born in 1977 in Assiut (Egypt), and now lives in Basel and Cairo, invites visitors to take a journey into the future, he is primarily concerned with the present. His work, consisting of slide projections, photographs, works on paper and installations combine into a stream of images that reflects the fluid boundaries between reality and virtuality.
“Collective Failure,” says the artist, “has the same relevance as it did in the nineteenth century and as it will in the twenty-second. There is nothing special about our time or what we're witnessing today. We are just naive enough to reenact the same mistakes that were made so many times before.”
Among the works on display is The Future of Your Head (2008), a sculpture incorporating a two-way mirror with a message formed out of sparkling Christmas lights, suggests that we can leave behind our self-reflectic causal thinking and our anthropocentric worldview.

The works on paper, distinguished by their psychedelic colours, show groups of researchers roam between futuristic buildings and radio stations as in Miniature Existence (2009), or well-dressed people celebrate the collective failure of a world in which human civilization seems to have come to an end as in A recollection of Past Errors Manifested as a Crustacean (2013).
At the centre of the exhibition is Magdy’s large-scale 64-part photographic work An Apology of a Love Story that Crashed into a Whale. Commissioned for this show, the work impressively illustrates Magdy’s handling of photography and text.
However, the installations, films, photographs and drawings of this Egyptian artist emanate a strange tragicomic joy; what makes them so unreal is the use of hypnotic music, acid colours, the old-fashioned flavour of the texts, with which he creates suggested narratives that leave conclusions open. What he tries to do with his work is to propose more open alternatives, free from hierarchies and ideologies.
The way in which he combines text and images, the poetic and sometimes absurd form of his works, reveal his view of reality, which invites us to think laterally, accepting contradictions and rejecting dogmas.
Basim Magdy constantly reflects on the movement of images and information, and questions the manner in which we ourselves store and share our memories, a fact that somehow sets our future in predetermined structures. He uses his personal vision of the future as an opportunity to criticise the present, and his surreal humour puts us face to face with what we often reject: the uncertain and uncontrollable.

In recent years, Basim Magdy has participated in numerous international group exhibitions, including the Sharjah and Istanbul biennials in 2013 and the Montreal and Biennale MEDIACITY Seoul biennials in 2014. His work was on view at the highly acclaimed exhibitions “Surround Audience: New Museum Triennial 2015” and “Ocean of Images. New Photography 2015” at MoMA in New York.

اعتباراً من 15 سبتمبر، وبالتعاون مع دويتشه بنك، يقدم المتحف الوطني لفنون القرن الحادي والعشرين في روما "MAXXI" أول معرض فني منفرد في إيطاليا مخصص لأعمال الفنان باسم مجدي، والذي حاز على جائزة فنان العام من دويتشه بنك لعام 2016، وهي جائزة تُمنح للفنانين الناشئين أو الفنانين في المراحل المتوسطة من مسيرتهم الفنية، ممن تميزوا عن أقرانهم من حيث الإبداع والقيمة التي تمثلها أعمالهم.
وكان معرض "دويتشه بنك" الفني في برلين (KunstHalle) قد استضاف أعمال الفنان في معرض حمل عنوان "اصطفاف النجوم إيذاناً بقرن من البدايات الجديدة"، وذلك للمرة الأولى في أبريل الماضي. وبعد اختتام المعرض في MAXXI سينتقل إلى متحف الفن المعاصر بشيكاغو.
يذكر أن معرض باسم مجدي في متحف MAXXI يأتي في إطار مبادرة جديدة أطلقها المتحف تحمل اسم "Expanding the Horizon" وتهدف إلى دعم طموحات المعرض العالمية واستكشاف صورة جديدة للمساحات الفنية المفتوحة عبر التعاون مع مؤسسات وجموعات فنية خاصة أخرى.
يضم المعرض أكثر من 30 عملاً فنياً منها أفلام وشرائح عرض وصور فوتوغرافية ولوحات ومعروضات مختلفة أبدعها خلال الفترة بين 2006 و2016. وتشارَك في تنظيم المعرض والإشراف عليه كل من بريتا فيربر؛ قيّمة الأعمال الفنية لدى "دويتشه بنك" وآنا بالوبولي؛ قيّمة متحف MAXXI،
وتقول جيوفانا ميلاندري، رئيس متحف MAXXI: "تسرنا استضافة أعمال الفنان باسم مجدي التي تمتاز بجودتها وطبيعتها المعاصرة، فهي مثالية لمساحات العرض في متاحف مثل MAXXI لتمثل ما يشبه ورشة عمل مفتوحة أو منتدى للفنون، كما أنها تمثل دليلاً ملموساً على تعاوننا مع شريك استثنائي هو دويتشه بنك الذي يعرف بحرصه على دعم الفنون. تؤدي المؤسسات والشركات وأصحاب المجموعات الفنية الخاصة دوراً أساسياً في دعم المتحف في ظل التحديات الثقافية التي نواجهها".
من جانبه يقول فريدهيلم هويته، رئيس قسم الفنون لدى دويتشه بنك: "نحن سعداء بتواجدنا، بالتعاون مع متحف MAXXI، في المعرض المنفرد الأول لباسم مجدي في إيطاليا. أعمال باسم مجدي تدعو الناس إلى التطلع للمستقبل، وهو ينتمي لمجموعة متنامية من الفنانين الذي تأثروا بعصر الإنترنت والتفكير التقني، والذين نجحوا في تطوير رؤى مستقبلية تختلف بشكل واضح عن الرؤية المادية التي سادت القرن العشرين حول التقدم والازدهار. لقد وجدنا في متحف MAXXI الشريك المثالي لاستضافة توجهات الفن المعاصر والاتجاهات المستقبلية، في إطار البحث المستمر عن مصادر الإلهام والتفكّر".
وعلى الرغم من أن عنوان المعرض "اصطفاف النجوم إيذاناً بقرن من البدايات الجديدة" يبدو للوهلة الأولى متفائلاً، إلا أن باسم مجدي يتلاعب بأسلوب ساخر ومرح بفكرة الحلقة المتغيرة دوماً من الآمال وأحلام المدينة الفاضلة والهزائم.
وفيما يصحب الفنان، المولود سنة 1977 في أسيوط بمصر ويقيم حالياً متنقلاً بين بازل والقاهرة، زوار المعرض في جولة تنقلهم إلى المستقبل، إلا أن همه الأبرز هو الحاضر. تضم أعمال باسم مجدي شرائح عرض وصور فوتوغرافية وأعمال على الورق ومعروضات مختلفة تندمج جميعها لتشكّل إيقاعاً متواصلاً من الصور التي تعكس الحواجز المرنة بين الواقع والخيال.
ويقول الفنان: "ما زال مفهوم الفشل الجماعي مرتبطاً بالواقع تماماً كمان كان في القرن التاسع عشر، وسيبقى كذلك حتى في القرن الثاني والعشرين. ليس هناك ما يميز عصرنا الحالي أو ما نشهده اليوم. كل ما في الأمر أننا على قدر كبير من السذاجة لدرجة تكرار نفس الأخطاء التي ارتكبتا سابقاً مرة تلوَّ الأخرى ".
وتبرز من بين الأعمال المعروضة منحوتة تحمل عنوان "مستقبل دماغك" تعود لعام 2008، وتتألف من مرآة على جانبي سطح مستوٍ تحمل عبارة تشكّلها أضواء الأعياد المتلألئة، وتشير إلى إمكانية تخلينا عن التفكير الذاتي ونظرتنا للعالم من حولنا والتي تتمحور بشكل أساسي حول الإنسان.
أما ثلاثية الأفلام التي أنتجها الفنان في عام 2014 (وتحمل عناوين: الطقس اليومي للقرود المنعزلة – ألوان السماء المتعددة تشع بالنسيان – الانبعاج) فتعرض من خلال سيناريوهات تعكس نهاية العالم وما بعدها، مجتمعات مفلسة غارقة في طقوس سخيفة تهدف إلى الحفاظ على الماضي وما احتواه من مشاريع تدل على إصابة الإنسان بجنون العظمة.
وتمتاز أعمال الفنان على الورق بألوان تحمل طابع السايكيديليك الخيالي، وتظهر فيها مجموعة من الباحثين يتجولون بين مبان ذات طابع مستقبلي وبين محطات إذاعة، كما في "وجود مصغّر – 2009"، أو أشخاص متأنقين يحتفلون بالفشل الجماعي لعالم يشهد نهاية الحضارة الإنسانية كما في ذكرى أخطاء سابقة تتجسد على صورة قشريات – 2013"
يتوسط المعرض عمل فوتوغرافي ضخم من 64 جزءاً يحمل عنوان "اعتذار قصة حب اصطدمت بحوت". تم تنفيذ هذا العمل خصيصاً للمعرض، وهو يجسد بوضوح قدرة باسم مجدي على التعامل مع الصور الفوتوغرافية والنصوص.
تعكس أعمال هذا الفنان المصري على اختلاف صورها شعوراً غريباً بالبهجة التراجيدية الكوميدية، بينما يضفي عليها طابعاً من الخيال والوهم استخدام الفنان للموسيقى الآسرة والألوان الساطعة والطابع القديم للنصوص التي أضافها الفنان لإضافة روايات معبّرة عن أعماله تترك النهايات مفتوحة. ويسعى باسم مجدي من خلال أعماله إلى طرح بدائل مفتوحة للوضع القائم، بعيداً عن التسلسل الهرمي المعتاد والأيديولوجيات السائدة.
أما الطريقة التي يمزج بها الفنان بين النص والصور، والطابع الشاعري حيناً والسخيف حيناً لأعماله، فيكشف عن نظرته للواقع، وهي نظرة تدعونا للتفكير بصورة أكثر شمولية وانفتاح، وتقبل التناقضات ورفض الأفكار الثابتة.
وتعكس أعمال باسم مجدي دوماً حركة الصور والمعلومات، وهو دائم التساؤل والبحث في الكيفية التي نخزن فيها نحن البشر ذكرياتنا ونشاركها مع الآخرين – وهي حقائق تلعب دوراً في توجيه مستقبلنا ضمن أطر محددة مسبقاً. ويوظف باسم مجدي رؤيته الخاصة حول المستقبل كفرصة لنقد الحاضر، بينما يدفعنا حسه السيريالي بالفكاهة إلى مواجهة ما نرفضه عادة: التعامل مع المجهول، وكل ما هو خارج عن سيطرتنا.

يذكر أن باسم مجدي شارك خلال السنوات الأخيرة في العديد من المعارض الجماعية العالمية، منها بينيال الشارقة وبينيال إسطنبول في 2013، وبينيال مونتريال وبينيال ميديا سيتي سيؤول في 2014. وعرضت أعماله خلال عدد من المعارض المرموقة منها "Surround Audience:New Museum Triennial 2015" و"Ocean of Images. New Photography 2015" في متحف الفن الحديث بمدينة نيويورك.
