Talented Egyptian Mobile App Developers Win Competition Hosted by Google, MCIT and MIT

Twelve startups and mobile apps competed for financial support and mentorship to help their ideas off the ground

Cairo, July 28, 2016 - The startup winners of the first competition of the Mobile App Launchpad Program (MAL) led by Google, Udacity and the Egyptian Ministry of Communication and Information Technology were announced today. After four months of developing and executing their ideas, twelve participating teams pitched to a judging panel of senior executives from Google and other industry experts to receive funding and extensive mentorship for their startup mobile apps.

The competition was divided into two tracks: the Startup Track and the Tech & Innovation Track. 7asala, an online platform where users can donate to a specific project within an NGO won first place and a total of 20K USD in the Startup Track. While the Balloon Mail app, which aims to spread positive messages anonymously, won first place at the Tech and Innovation Track.

Hosted by the MIT Enterprise Forum, the competition is the first in a series of four in the ongoing Mobile Application Launchpad program launched in November of last year where 480 students from 20 governorates in Egypt have completed the course to date. The program aims to reach a total of 2000 students. MAL is geared at grooming Egypt’s successful mobile app developers using three main pillars: training, certification and career guidance/job placements in the ICT field.

A group of CEOs and founders of Egyptian ventures and startups made up the judging panel which included Google MENA’s Head of Consumer Marketing Najeeb Jarrar and Dr. Hossam Osman, CEO of the Technology Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center (TIEC). The panel also included Neveen Tahri, Chairperson and Managing Director, Delta Holding for Financial Investments, Karim Hussein, Founder & CEO, D-Kimia, Dina Sherif, CEO and Co-founder, Ahead of the Curve, Wael Amin, Partner at Sawari Ventures, and Remon Zakaria, Chairman and Founder of DashSoft & KetApp.

The competition had two tracks: the Innovation and Tech track, as well as the Startup track. In two parallel sessions, finalists from each track pitched their projects to the judges who chose the winners based on the level of maturity of the idea, the application, and the readiness of the team.

“When we launched MAL in November of last year, we did it because we believe young Egyptians can be major contributors to the growing mobile app industry in the region. After seeing MAL graduates pitch their innovative ideas today, I am proud to see where they have come. We look forward to having more developers join us so we can help them reach their full potential,” Hisham El Araby, project lead at Google for the Mobile App Launchpad Program, said.

The competition was held at the American University of Cairo and was followed by the graduation ceremony of the third batch of developers who completed the MAL program.

مطورو تطبيقات المحمول المصريون يفوزون بالمسابقة التكنولوجية التي نظمتها Google بالتعاون مع وزارة الاتصالات وتكنولوجيا المعلومات ومعهد MIT

تنافس قوي بين 12 مشروع وتطبيق جديد للحصول على الدعم المالي والتوجيه التكنولوجي لمساعدتهم في إطلاق شركاتهم الجديدة  

القاهرة في 28 يوليو 2016- تم اليوم الإعلان عن أسماء المشروعات الفائزة في المسابقة الأولى لبرنامج Mobile Application Launchpad التي نظمتها شركة Google بالتعاون مع وزارة الاتصالات وتكنولوجيا المعلومات المصرية و منتدى MIT لريادة الأعمال في العالم العربي. فبعد 4 أشهر من تطوير وتنفيذ أفكارهم المبتكرة، استعرض ١٠ فرق وصلوا للتصفيات النهائية للمسابقة، أفكارهم ومشروعاتهم المستقبلية أمام لجنة التحكيم التي ضمت عدداً من المسئولين التنفيذيين فيGoogle  وشركات أخرى إلى جانب خبراء قطاع التكنولوجيا في مصر، من أجل الحصول على التمويل اللازم والتدريب الفني المكثف للبدء في إطلاق تطبيقاتهم ومشروعاتهم الناشئة.  

تضمنت المسابقة الرئيسية مسابقتين فرعيتين، الأولى في مجال الإبداع والابتكار التكنولوجي والثانية مسابقة للشركات الناشئة. وعلى مدار جلستين متزامنتين، قام المتأهلون للتصفيات النهائية في المسابقتين باستعراض مشروعاتهم في كل مسابقة على حدة، أمام لجنة التحكيم التي قامت باختيار الفائزين اعتماداً على مدى نضج الفكرة والتطبيق ومدى استعداد الفريق.    

وحازت 7asala، احدى المشاريع المشاركة في المسابقة ضمن اطار الشركات الناشئة بالمرتبة الاولى الذي تضمن 200,000 USD. تمكن شركة حصالة مستخدمينها بالتبرع الى مشاريع معينة ضمن جمعيات خيرية و متابعة تبرعاتهم عبر تطبيق هاتفي. اما في اطار تطبيقات الهواتف، فاز تطبيق Balloon Mail بالمرتبة الأولى و 6,000 USD. وهي منصة تهدف لنشر اارسائل الايجابية في المجتمع الإفتراضي.

قام بتنظيم المسابقة MIT Enterprise Forum Pan Arab ، وهي المسابقة الأولى من 4 مسابقات أخرى تابعة لمبادرة MAL والتي تم إطلاقها في نوفمبر 2015، وشارك فيها حتى الآن 480 طالباً من 20 محافظة مصرية قاموا باستكمال دورتهم التدريبية بالبرنامج.  يستهدف البرنامج بشكل عام مشاركة 2000 طالب مصري. الجدير بالذكر أن برنامج  MAL يسعى لتأهيل ومساعدة الموهوبين من مطوري التطبيقات المصريين بالاعتماد على 3 محاور أساسية هي التدريب ومنح شهادات التخرج المعتمدة وإرشادهم في المجال المهني والحصول على فرص عمل في قطاع الاتصالات وتكنولوجيا المعلومات.      

ضمت لجنة التحكيم عدداً من خبراء تكنولوجيا المعلومات والمؤسسين والمسئولين التنفيذيين لعدد من الشركات المصرية والشركات الناشئة، وهم نجيب جرار، رئيس قطاع التسويق للمستهلكين لمنطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال أفريقيا بشركة Google، ود. حسام عثمان، الرئيس التنفيذي لمركز الإبداع التكنولوجي وريادة الأعمال (TIEC)، كما ضمت اللجنة أيضاً نيفين الطاهري، رئيس مجلس الإدارة والرئيس التنفيذي لشركة دلتا القابضة للاستثمارات المالية، كريم حسين، المؤسس والرئيس التنفيذي لشركة D-Kimia،   دينا شريف، الرئيس التنفيذي والشريك المؤسس لشركة Ahead of the Curve، وائل أمين، شريك في Sawari Ventures، وريمون زكريا، رئيس مجلس الإدارة ومؤسس شركتيDashSoft               و KetApp

أقيمت المسابقة في الجامعة الأمريكية بالقاهرة، تلاها مراسم تخرج الدفعة الثالثة من مطوري التطبيقات المصريين الذين استكملوا برنامجهم التدريبي.

AUC PARTNERS WITH CIB TO CREATE AUC VENTURE LAB FINTECH ACCELERATOR

July 28, 2016, Cairo- Focusing on the area of financial technologies (FinTech), The American University in Cairo (AUC) and the Commercial International Bank-Egypt (CIB) are partnering to support entrepreneurship in Egypt, by creating the AUC Venture Lab FinTech Accelerator, powered by CIB.

New and emerging financial technologies (FinTech) are rapidly changing the landscape in the financial services and banking field. FinTech include new and potentially innovative startups in several areas, such as digital and mobile payments. A number of Egyptian startups have made progress in this space; however, the number of Egyptian FinTech startups remains limited with significant untapped opportunities.

Through this partnership, AUC Venture Lab will house the new FinTech Accelerator, powered by CIB. Through a 12-week acceleration program, FinTech startups will receive specialized support to launch and grow their business; gain valuable insights from some of the smartest minds in the start-up and FinTech world; and increase their impact on the Egyptian economy.

CIB's partnership with AUC will create a platform to bridge the gap between the financial services sector and the emerging entrepreneurial ecosystem to encourage new startups in the FinTech space, which would introduce innovative solutions.

Takeda Launches Innovative Product to Treat Acid Reflux

Takeda announces availability of innovative gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) treatment

‘Dexlansoprazole’ in Egypt; a treatment that allows patients to better manage GERD

Cairo, Egypt – July 28, 2016 – Takeda, the global, research-driven Japanese healthcare company, today announced that patients suffering from gastroesophageal reflux disease, commonly known as GERD or acid reflux, now have access to an innovative proton pump inhibitor (PPI)) treatment to help them manage their condition more effectively. Takeda’s ‘Dexlansoprazole’ is the first and only currently approved PPI that uses dual delayed release technology to offer patients with GERD 24-hour symptom control. This capsule can be taken any time of the day regardless of the timing of food intake.

Although PPIs are highly effective, well tolerated and affordable for most patients, there are still unmet needs. Between 19% to 44% of patients globally still experience persistent reflux symptoms, as available PPIs do not control gastroesophageal reflux disease symptoms adequately. Takeda aims to address this unmet need, by making Dexlansoprazole available to doctors throughout Egypt.

“Although most often diagnosed in patients over 50 years of age, gastroesophageal reflux disease can affect all ages and the number of people suffering from GERD is on the rise, locally and globally,” said Professor Mazen Naga, Professor of Internal Medicine, Cairo University. “Modern lifestyles have led to higher levels of stress, lack of physical activity and high consumption of rich and fatty foods. Such lifestyle factors can make people more susceptible to this disease and its symptoms.”

‘GERD is a very common disorder. 25-40% of healthy adults experience symptomatic GERD at least once a month, whereas 14% of adults suffer from heartburn or acid reflux on a weekly basis and 7% notice it once a day” Professor Mazen added.

GERD is a condition that develops when the acid in the stomach moves back into the esophagus, leading to a burning sensation, considerable discomfort and, in the worst case scenario, serious tissue damage.  It is estimated that between 8.7 % and 33.1 % of the population in the Middle East suffer from the disease, which is on the rise in the Arab world and in the West.

“Takeda is focusing on healthcare solutions that address the unmet medical needs of patients, in diseases such as oncology, diabetes and gastroesophageal reflux disease,” said Mohamed Abdelfattah, Country Director of Takeda Pharmaceuticals Egypt. “Dexlansoprazole provides a unique and innovative solution for GERD, allowing patients to better manage their condition and make a meaningful difference to their well-being and quality of life.”

Despite the continuing prevalence of GERD and its broad occurrence across different age groups, there is limited awareness on the causes, symptoms and treatment options for the disease. “The burden of the disease is huge and affects the quality of life of patients, influencing the social, physical and emotional well-being as well as causing a loss of productivity,” said Professor Ibrahim Mostafa, Professor of Gastroenterology & Hepatology, the Theodor Bilharz Research institute. “PPI therapy is one of the most effective treatment options for GERD and arguably more effective than antacids or histamine receptor antagonists. “Some may still experience symptoms despite being on PPI therapy, while some may find it hard to comply with the recommended dosing schedule for traditional PPIs and others may have concerns around interactions with other drugs they are taking”.

Dexlansoprazole is the first and only currently approved PPI with a dual-delayed release formulation that provides 24-hour heartburn relief in the majority of patients.4,5,6 There are two different types of granules that release Dexlansoprazole at different time points for extended duration of acid suppression.7 The drug can be taken at any time of the day regardless of meals or food intake,8,9 making this treatment highly convenient

ماذا يحدث لمترو مصر الجديدة؟

منذ سنة 2013 ونحن نعمل جاهدين من أجل إظهار أهمية تطوير مرفق مترو مصر الجديدة كأكثر وسائل النقل موفرة إقتصاديا مقارنة بوسائل النقل الأخرى، وكأكثر وسائل النقل حفاظا على البيئة وكأحد حلول مشاكل وعشوائية المرور في مصر الجديدة والتي ظهرت منذ أن ضعف تسيير المترو وتقاعس المسئولين عن صيانة وتطوير هذا المرفق الحيوي والتراثي والذي يعتبر سبب نجاح نشأة مصر الجديدة في أوائل القرن الماضي. ومما لا شك فيه أن تطويره سيخفف الضغط عن الخط الاول لمترو الأنفاق.

توجهنا إلى جميع الجهات وجاهدنا من أجل الحفاظ علي هذا المرفق وعدم إزالة خطوطه، والتي تمثل الثروة الحقيقية لهذه الشبكة،  بكل الوسائل الإعلامية  والإحتجاجية  حتى نجحنا في اقناع المسئولين لتطوير هذا المرفق بـما يلي:

• ادخال تطوير خطوط عبدالعزيز والنزهة  ضمن المخطط العام للنقل في القاهرة الكبرى وعرضها في المؤتمر الاقتصادي في يناير 2011 .
• نقل تبعية المترو من محافظة القاهرة إلى هيئة الأنفاق ووزارة النقل استعدادا  لتمويل  تطويره
• وعود المؤسسات  المالية الدولية بتمويل 720 مليون يورو لتطوير الترام في مصر الجديدة و2 مليون  يورو كمنحة لدراسة عملية التطوير

وكانت هناك خطوات ايجابية  تمثلت في:

• ابريل 2016: وقعت الحكومة المصرية بروتوكول تعاون مع نظيرتها الفرنسية بحضور الرئيسين لتطوير مترو مصر الجديدة  بإجمالي 80  مليون يورو
• وفي مايو 2016 : تم توقيع بروتوكول مع" البنك الأوروبي للتنمية " لتمويل تطوير مترو مصر الجديدة بإجمالي 250 يورو

في الأسبوع الماضي فوجئنا بنزع الخطوط في منطقة مانشية البكري والمعلمين  )نقطة التقابل بين خطي النزهة وعبدالعزيز للتوجه إلى رمسيس) في توقيت غريب قبل بدء دراسة التطوير(مرفق صور وفيديوهات لعملية الازالة)و نبأ الي علمنا معلومات، لم يتثنى لنا التأكد منها، بإلغاء المشروع برمته. وبناء علية نتوجه بهذه الأسئلة المشروعة للمسؤولين لتوضيح حقيقة الامر:

1. لماذا يتم نزع الخطوط بهذه الطريقة العشوائية وفي هذا التوقيت، بدون أوراق رسمية ولا قرارات إدارية من جهة واضحة ؟
2. لماذا يتم نزع الخطوط قبل نقل المعدات الجديدة المتواجدة في مخزن المعلمين ودون نقلها إلى جراج ألماظة )حيث أنها تنقل فقط  على قضبان) والتي لا حاجة لها الآن في مخزن المعلمين؟ هل سيتم تكهينها وبيعها خردة لعدم القدرة على استعمالها مجددا؟ (كما وصلنا انه حدث في عربات جراج المطرية منذ عدة أشهر)
3. هل يتم رصد اعمال نزع القضبان الحديدية والأسلاك النحاسية والفلانكات وعمل حصر لها، أم أن كل ذلك متروك لمقاولين الخردة دون أي تسجيل في مرفق المترو أو مناقصة لبيعها؟
4. هل بعد وئد بعض خطوط هذا المرفق من قبل محافظة القاهرة واستبدالها بخطوط أتوبيس ملوثة ومكلفة للدولة من حيث الاستثمار والتلوث البيئي والمحروقات، سيتم استكمال  المهمة و القضاء علي ما تبقي من هذا المرفق واستبدالها ايضا بأتوبيسات ملوثة ومكلفة من قبل وزارة النقل رغم ضغطنا المسبق لنقل المرفق  لها لإنقاذه؟
5. هل هناك دور للاستشاري الذي كانت ستؤول اليه مناقصة الدراسة والتطوير وفشل في الحصول عليها  في اقناع المسئولين بإلغاء المشروع وتحويله لمسار للأتوبيسات؟
6. من المنتفع الاول من القتل الممنهج والكامل لهذا المرفق في شبكة المواصلات العامة في القاهرة؟
7. هل هناك جهة ستؤول اليها أرض الجراج بألماظة عند توقف المترو كما نبأ إلى علمنا؟

هذه ليست اتهامات ولكن أسئلة مشروعة فمن المسئول عن كل ما يحدث من عشوائية وإهدار للوقت وعدم شفافية؟ هل هي بداية تحضيرية لعملية التطوير لمترو مصر الجديدة أم هي بداية أخرى لمسلسل تدمير هذا المرفق وما تبقى منه شهرين فقط بعد إمضاء بروتوكولات التعاون.
