Uber launches in Kampala, Uganda as 462 city in Uber’s global network

Kampala joins the growing list of smart African cities to offer Uber
KAMPALA, Uganda, June 2, 2016/ -- Today, Uganda joins Uber’s growing African network (www.Uber.com). With the launch of Uber, the innovative technology platform, Kampala joins the list of smart transportation hubs in Africa. Following the success of Uber in many other growing cities, Uber is excited to launch its ride-sharing platform to the people of Kampala.

Get Your Ride
  • No more street hails or waiting outside to find a ride. You can start the Uber app from anywhere and wait safely for your car to arrive. That means no standing on the street to hail a cab or struggling to find the nearest bus stop late at night.
  • You can easily identify the driver and car coming to pick you up. When a driver accepts your request, you see his or her first name, photo, and license plate number. You can also check whether others have had a good experience with him or her. In addition, the driver can see your first name and rating.
  • You can contact the driver—and vice versa— through the app if there is any confusion around pick-up details.    
Share Your Ride Details
  • Share your ETA and location. You can easily share your ride details, including the specific route and estimated time of arrival, with friends or family for extra peace of mind.
  • They’ll receive a link where they can see in real time the name and photo of the driver, their vehicle, and where you are on the map until you arrive at your destination—and they can do all of this without having to download the Uber app themselves.
After the Ride
  • Feedback and ratings after every trip. After every ride, you and your drivers need to rate each other and provide feedback. Our safety team reviews this information and investigates any issues.
  • 24/7 Support. If something happens in a car, whether it’s a traffic accident or altercation between you and your driver, our customer support staff are ready to respond to any issues 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
  • Rapid Response. We have a dedicated Incident Response Team to answer any more urgent issues. If we receive a report that a driver or rider has acted dangerously or inappropriately, we suspend their account, preventing him or her from accessing the platform while we investigate.
Behind the Scenes
  • Always on the map. Accountability is one of the things that makes riders feel safe in an Uber. We use GPS to keep a record of where a driver goes during the ride, allowing us to verify that the most efficient routes are being used, which creates accountability and a strong incentive for good behaviour.
  • Working with law enforcement. In cases where law enforcement provides us with valid legal process, we work to get them the facts, for example by providing trip logs. Again, transparency and accountability are at the heart of the Uber experience.
  • Pre-screening drivers. All drivers must undergo a screening process before they can use the Uber app.

Panasonic kick starts Rio Olympics Campaign with #YallaRio promotion

Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts named a ‘global leader’ in sustainable practices by Green Globe.



Swiss hospitality firm recognised as the most ‘Green Globe certified hotel company in the world’ by industry-renowned certification body.

Baar, Switzerland, 1 June 2016: Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts has been hailed a “global leader” in certified sustainable practices by Green Globe.

The certification body’s 2015 report on Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts revealed the Swiss hospitality firm has an overall average compliance score of 84%, an impressive 2.5% higher than the average of all Green Globe certified members worldwide (81.5%).

It cements Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts’ position as the most “Green Globe certified hotel company in the world”, with 63 of its 83 properties worldwide now Green Globe certified.

“Green Globe has certified Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts in 19 countries worldwide. This is a tremendous accomplishment when we consider the variety of countries and cultures, as well as the different types of properties and their diverse markets,” says Guido Bauer, CEO, Green Globe.

The Green Globe report also commended Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts for its “great passion for the development of its employees and supporting local communities”, highlighting SHINE, the group’s global corporate social responsibility programme, which focuses on Environment, Employer and Social Sustainability, with an emphasis on Education.

“In Nepal we collaborate with Right4Children, offering disadvantaged young people intensive vocational and life-skills training, and subsequently offer them job opportunities as part of our SHINE initiative. Around 25 students participate in this programme every year,” explained Jean Gabriel Pérès, President and CEO of Mövenpick Hotels & Resort.

Green Globe’s Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts 2015 report found the group’s top-performing hotels were all located in Germany, with Mövenpick Hotel Münster and Mövenpick Hotel Stuttgart Airport & Messe both achieving an exemplary compliance rate of 98%, followed by Mövenpick Hotel Hamburg and Mövenpick Hotel München-Airport, with 97% each.

Stand-out examples of ‘best practice’ identified by Green Globe in Europe, ranged from car-share initiatives at Mövenpick Hotel Berlin to ‘green meetings’ at Mövenpick Hotel Nürnberg-Airport where even the pens are biodegradable.

In the Middle East, the highest-scoring property was Mövenpick Resort Al Nawras Jeddah, Saudi Arabia with a 92% compliance rate, while in Africa and Asia, the top performers were Mövenpick Hotel & Casino Cairo-Media City (92%) in Egypt and Mövenpick Resort & Spa Karon Beach Phuket (86%) in Thailand respectively.

Some of the most innovative projects Green Globe highlighted include an employee-led harvesting initiative at Mövenpick Resort & Spa Dead Sea, Jordan, where each year the team harvests 2,000 kilos of oranges from the resort gardens, some of which the chefs make into marmalade that is served at breakfast; underwater clean-ups and diving restriction measures designed to preserve the marine environment at Egypt’s Mövenpick Resort El Quseir; and the introduction of a hybrid-limousine fleet and electric tuk tuks at Mövenpick Resort & Spa Karon Beach Phuket, Thailand.

“I am immensely proud of the dedication our colleagues have shown to our Green Globe commitments through pioneering sustainability practices, which are not only important to our company, but to a world where resources are increasingly scarce and many communities are underprivileged,” said Pérès.

“As we review our achievements, it is also important we rise to new challenges, striving to operate an even cleaner, greener and more sustainable business.” The aim is for all Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts properties worldwide to be Green Globe certified within two years, added Pérès.

بار، سويسرا، 1 يونيو 2016 – حازت شركة فنادق ومنتجعات موڤنبيك على لقب "الشركة الرائدة في العالم" للممارسات المستدامة المصدّقة من قبل غرين غلوب.

وأشار تقرير شركة غرين غلوب 2015 عن شركة فنادق ومنتجعات موڤنبيك الى أن شركة الضيافة السويسرية سجّلت معدّلا عاما في التطابق وصل الى 84%، أي بأكثر بنسبة 2.5% من المعدّل العام لكل أعضاء غرين غلوب في العالم (81.5%).

هذا الواقع يعزز مكانة شركة فنادق ومنتجعات موڤنبيك "كأكثر الشركات حيازة على شهادات غرين غلوب في العالم"، حيث أصبحت 63 منشأة من إجمالي 83 منشأة  تحمل  علامة موڤنبيك في العالم تحصل على شهادة غرين غلوب.
وقال غويدو باور، الرئيس التنفيذي لمؤسسة غرين غلوب:  "لقد منحت غرين غلوب شهاداتها لفنادق ومنتجعات موڤنبيك في 19 بلدا في العالم. هذا إنجاز كبير عندما نأخذ بعين الاعتبار تنوع البلدان والثقافات، وكذلك تنوع المنشآت ومناطق وجودها".

وكان تقرير غرين غلوب قد أشار أيضا الى "شغف شركة فنادق ومنتجعات موڤنبيك لتطوير مهارات موظفيها ودعم مجتمعاتها المحلية"، مع إشارة الى برنامج شاين الذي تعتمده الشركة للمسؤولية الاجتماعية، وهو يركّز على البيئة والموظف والاستدامة الاجتماعية مع اهتمام بارز بقطاع التعليم.

وقال جان غابرييل بيريز، الرئيس التنفيذي لشركة فنادق ومنتجعات موڤنبيك: "نتعاون في النيبال مع جمعية Right4Children حيث نقدّم للمحتاجين الشباب التدريب المهني المكثّف لنتيح لهم بالتالي فرصا للعمل ضمن مبادرة شاين من شركتنا، ويشارك 25 طالبا في هذا البرنامج كل عام".

وأظهر تقرير غرين غلوب حول شركة فنادق ومنتجعات موڤنبيك للعام 2015 أن أكثر فنادق الشركة أداء موجودة في ألمانيا، حيث حقق فندق موڤنبيك مونشتر وفندق موڤنبيك مطار ومعارض شتوتغارت تطابقا بنسبة 98%، يليهما فندق موڤنبيك هامبورغ وفندق موڤنبيك مطار ميونيخ وحقق كل منهما نسبة تطابق بمعدّل 97%.

كما برزت أمثال عن "أفضل الممارسات" وفق غرين غلوب في أوروبا، إبتداء من مبادرات المشاركة في النقل بالسيارة في فندق موڤنبيك برلين الى "الاجتماعات الخضراء" في فندق موڤنبيك مطار نورنبرغ حيث حتى الأقلام قابلة للتحلل.

وفي الشرق الأوسط، تم تسجيل أعلى معدّل تطابق في منتجع موڤنبيك النورس جدة في المملكة العربية السعودية بنسبة 92%، بينما جاءت أعلى نسب تطابق في أفريقيا وآسيا في فندق وكازينو موڤنبيك القاهرة – مدينة الإعلام بمعدّل 92% في مصر، ومنتجع موڤنبيك كارون بيتش بوكيت بمعدّل86% في تايلاند على التوالي.

كما ألقت غرين غلوب الضوء على بعض المشاريع المبتكرة منها مبادرة القطاف التي يقودها موظفو منتجع موڤنبيك البحر الميت في الأردن، حيث يقوم الفريق بجمع ألفي كيلوغرام من البرتقال من حدائق المنتجع، ويقوم الطهاة بتحويل جزء منها الى مربّى يقدّم على الفطور. وفي منتجع موڤنبيك القصير في مصر، تمت الاشارة الى عمليات تنظيف البحر وتطبيق إجراءات تحديد الغطس لحماية البيئة البحرية، بينما تناول التقرير طرح اسطول السيارات الهجينة والعربات العاملة بالطاقة الكهربائية في منتجع موڤنبيك كارون بيتش بوكيت في تايلاند.

وقال بيريز: "أنا فخور جدا بتفاني زملائي حيال التزامنا بمعايير غرين غلوب من خلال ممارسات الاستدامة الرائدة، التي ليست فقط مهمّة لشركتنا، بل لعالم تتضاءل موارده باستمرار ويعاني الكثير من مجتمعاته من الحرمان".

GIGABYTE Unleashes New Gaming Graphics Cards


At the VGA division of GIGABYTE, the company displayed its latest graphics cards that sport new custom coolers for its new Xtreme Gaming and G1 Gaming lineup for the NVIDIA GTX 1080. The new Xtreme Gaming cooler comes with an overlapping fan design that maximizes the airflow, leaving no gaps between the fans for full graphics card coverage. Furthermore, the graphics cards are overclocked out of the box and will feature fully customizable RGB lighting.

GIGABYTE showcased its latest lineup of gaming notebooks for the GIGABYTE brand and the AORUS Gaming notebook brand at this COMPUTEX 2016. GIGABYTE displayed its new camouflage pattern skin for its new Aorus series notebooks as well as the world's first 120Hz panel on a notebook that feature its new RGB keyboard lighting. Furthermore, GIGABYTE Notebook also unveiled its new Aero series of notebooks that feature Quad HD display, and graphics options up to NVIDIA GTX 970M graphics that are all within a thin frame. The notebook is showcased in its orange and green color schemes complete with carbon fiber texture to give it an extra appeal.

Micron Debuts Ballistix Gaming and Performance Brand

At COMPUTEX 2016, Micron Technology, Inc. officially debuts its Ballistix brand as the name of its gaming and high-performance products. Micron will now have the Ballistix brand join with Crucial for consumers as a brand for solid-state drives and RAM. Both brands will also be fully equipped with premium components from the company. Furthermore, Micron also took the opportunity to announce three of its new products, the Ballistix Sport, Ballistix Tactical, and the Ballistix Elite. Joining the new line of products is the Ballistix TX3, the company's new high-performance M.2 SSD.

HWBOT World Tour 2016: Day 2 – Hazzan Beats Rule



The second day of the HWBOT World Tour 2016 at Computex got underway today, as did the part two of the World Series Asia extreme contest. Day 1 was all about exploring the nuances of Intel’s new Broadwell-E platform, with most of the 25 overclockers using the platform for the first time. The first day doubtless had many overclockers scratching their heads a little, as any wholly new CPU would – would day two prove to be more fruitful for some new faces, or would yesterday's cream of the crop rise to the top again?

The leaderboard at the end of play in fact had a kind of familiar ring to it with two of the previous day’s overclockers making it to the podium for a second consecutive time. In first place however we did in fact have a new face with Italian overclocker RULE winning the day’s action with a score of 62 points thanks to wins in XTU and Cinebench. In second place we have Hazzan who won the memory clock challenge in stage 2 while in third place we find our Swedish Semi-Finalist in waiting Rauf. Here’s how it breaks down in terms of prize money:

1st Place: $50: RULE (Italy)
2nd Place: $250: Hazzan (Indonesia)
3rd Place: $125: Rauf (Sweden)

Congrats to Hazzan who did really well to reach the 1v1 Face Off for the second time in as many days, joining Sweden’s Rauf in the Semi-Finals this Saturday.

AUC SIGNS MOU WITH AUK TO COLLABORATE IN ACADEMIC PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES



June 1, 2016, Cairo – In a formal signing ceremony, The American University in Cairo (AUC) and The American University of Kuwait (AUK) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to facilitate bilateral collaboration between the two universities on a wide spectrum of academic programs and activities. The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by AUK president Nizar Hamzeh, and AUC Provost, Sherif Sedky, to mark the beginning of collaboration between their respective institutions.

AUK President Hamzeh indicated that the purpose of the MOU is to promote academic collaboration that would allow students and faculty from both institutions exchange knowledge, ideas and resources contributing to academic excellence. "We are very pleased with this partnership because AUC is one of the few leading universities in the region, and that our mutual goal is to expand this academic collaboration to include development of new programs, including dual or joint degrees in engineering,” said Hamzeh.  

According to the MOU, possible venues of collaboration between the two universities will include articulation of course credits, study abroad or student exchange, collaboration with the AUC Center of Teaching and Learning and collaboration with other potential areas such as executive education programs and dual degrees in engineering, in particular; mechanical, civil, architecture and environmental.

The MOU will enable students and faculty from both institutions to pursue productive academic collaboration through exchange of knowledge, ideas, and resources contributing to academic excellence.

“We are delighted to have acquired a new partnership with AUK to share our common goals of academic excellence,” said AUC Provost Sherif Sedky. “We are especially pleased because AUK is a sister University in the region and we believe our cooperation will yield benefits to both institutions and reflect positively on the educational experience of students and faculty.”
