بناءً على التوجيهات السامية لصاحب السمو الشيخ خليفة بن زايد آل نهيان رئيس الدولة - حفظه الله -  ومتابعة صاحب السمو الشيخ محمد بن راشد آل مكتوم نائب رئيس الدولة رئيس مجلس الوزراء حاكم دبي، انطلقت بدءاً من يوم الأربعاء الماضي حملة "تراحموا" بمشاركة واسعة من جميع الجهات الرسمية والأهلية والقطاع الخاص، وذلك لإغاثة اللاجئين والمتضررين من العاصفة الثلجية "هدى" التي تضرب بلاد الشام خلال هذه الأيام ومن درجات الحرارة المنخفضة التي ينزح تحتها سكان هذه البلاد ولا سيّما الأخوة السوريين في مخيمات النازحين.

وشُكِّل لجنة وطنية عاجلة تضم الجهات الإغاثية الرئيسة في الدولة وجهات حكومية ووسائل الإعلام الرئيسة للبدء بتنفيذ الحملة والتي وضعت هدفاً لها توفير الدفء لمليون شخص من اللاجئين والمتضررين خلال فصل الشتاء وستتضمن الحملة العديد من الفعاليات المجتمعية والإعلامية والإغاثية خلال الفترة المقبلة.

وحول هذه الخطوة، صرّح المهندس محمد القاسمي، الرئيس التنفيذي لشركة ماكِسمُس للطيران: "بناءً على توجيهات صاحب السمو رئيس الدولة بالبدء الفوري بالحملة وبإشراك قطاعات المجتمع كافة تعزيزاً للحس الإنساني الذي عرف به مجتمع الإمارات، فقد قررت ماكسِمُس للطيران التبرع لرحلة اليوشن والتي تبلغ حمولتها 45 طناً مُحمّلة بمواد إغاثة وألبسة شتوية وأجهزة تدفئة من مطار الشارقة الدولي إلى مطار ماركا في العاصمة الأردنية، عمّان.

وجاء تبرع الشركة تنفيذاً لتوجيهات رئيس الدولة بالبدء في حملة إغاثة اللاجئين والمتضررين من العاصفة الثلجية التي تضرب بلاد الشام هذه الأيام بشكل خاص، ومن برد الشتاء بشكل عام.

يذكر أن الجسر الإماراتي بدأ العمل من يوم الأربعاء الماضي، وذلك بشحن معدات تدفئة وملابس شتوية ومواد غذائية بالتعاون مع المفوضية السامية للأمم المتحدة لشؤون اللاجئين.
يُشار إلى أن الحملة تسعى لمساعدة مليون شخص من اللاجئين والمتضررين في الأردن ولبنان بالإضافة للمتضررين في غزة وفلسطين على تجاوز شتاء قارص هذا العام تصل فيه الحرارة لدرجات عدة تحت الصفر، وتستعد فيه دول الشام لمواجهة عاصفة ثلجية قوية خلال الأيام المقبلة مصحوبة بأمطار غزيرة وثلوج وبرد حسب التوقعات.

The Lancet Oncology publishes Phase III data showing Giotrif® (afatinib*) significantly extended overall survival of lung cancer patients with the most common EGFR mutation over chemotherapy

• Results from two large trials independently showed a significant improvement in the secondary endpoint of overall survival for the subgroup of patients with the most common EGFR mutation (Del19)
• Patients with the Del19 mutation who received first-line afatinib compared to standard chemotherapy lived more than one year longer, achieving a 41% reduction in the risk of death
• Del19 is the most common EGFR mutation in lung cancer accounting for approximately 50% of all EGFR mutations
• LUX-Lung 3 and LUX-Lung 6 both met their primary endpoint of progression-free survival as afatinib significantly delayed tumour growth compared to standard chemotherapy regimens in patients with EGFR mutation-positive NSCLC

INGELHEIM, Germany, Jan. 12, 2015  (BUSINESS WIRE / ME NewsWire)-- Boehringer Ingelheim today announced overall survival (OS) results were published in The Lancet Oncology from two independent Phase III clinical trials (LUX-Lung 3 and LUX-Lung 6) in epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutation-positive patients with metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). In each trial, patients whose tumours have the most common EGFR mutation (deletion in exon 19; Del19) lived more than one year longer when treated with first-line afatinib, an irreversible ErbB Family Blocker, compared to standard chemotherapy. Overall survival was a secondary endpoint. Afatinib is the first and only EGFR targeting agent to demonstrate an overall survival benefit compared to chemotherapy in the first-line treatment of NSCLC patients with EGFR mutations.

“The positive overall survival results seen with afatinib in these two trials are an encouraging development for NSCLC patients with Del19 mutated tumours. No other currently existing EGFR targeted therapy has demonstrated an overall survival benefit in lung cancer patients with any type of EGFR mutation,” said Professor James Chih-Hsin Yang, Director of the Cancer Research Center, College of Medicine, National Taiwan University, Taipei, Taiwan. “These data further add to the body of evidence for afatinib which has previously demonstrated improvements in progression-free survival, lung cancer symptom control and quality of life in both Del19 and L858R populations, compared to chemotherapy.”

Results from both trials showed similar overall survival in the afatinib and chemotherapy arms in the overall NSCLC EGFR mutation-positive population (LUX-Lung 3: median OS 28.2 vs 28.2 months; LUX-Lung 6: median OS 23.1 vs 23.5 months), however, a significant benefit was observed in patients with the Del19 mutation. For these patients, both studies individually demonstrated a significant reduction in the risk of death with first-line afatinib compared to chemotherapy. That translated into a survival benefit of more than a year (LUX-Lung 3: median OS 33.3 vs 21.1 months; LUX-Lung 6: median OS 31.4 vs 18.4 months).

The effect was not observed for patients with L858R mutations, whose survival did not significantly differ between treatment arms in each trial. Adverse events for afatinib in the LUX-Lung 3 and 6 trials were as expected with EGFR inhibition, and were predictable, manageable and reversible. Diarrhoea and rash/acne were the most frequently reported side effects with afatinib therapy.

“This is the first time a targeted agent in the first-line setting has shown an overall survival benefit for NSCLC patients with the Del19 EGFR mutation,” commented Professor Gerd Stehle, Vice President Medicine Therapeutic Area Oncology, Boehringer Ingelheim. “These data are an important scientific advancement as they clearly demonstrate that even within the EGFR mutation-positive patient group we are dealing with different molecular abnormalities that require a tailored treatment approach.”

LUX-Lung 3 (Global) and LUX-Lung 6 (Asian), two of the largest trials in this patient population, were similar in design with the exception of the platinum-based chemotherapy comparator regimen: pemetrexed/cisplatin in LUX-Lung 3 and gemcitabine/cisplatin in LUX-Lung 6‡. Both studies met the primary endpoint of progression-free survival for patients whose tumours have common EGFR mutations receiving first-line afatinib. In addition, more patients taking afatinib experienced an improvement in lung cancer-related symptoms (cough, shortness of breath, chest pain) and a significantly better quality of life, when compared with chemotherapy.

Technology incubators in tech centers like Silicon Valley have created some spectacular results, generating billions of dollars in revenue through the launch of businesses, creating jobs and fostering the entrepreneurial climate in their communities. However, this model of incubation has not been applied in the same way to address deep poverty and to support community development.

Réjane Woodroffe, who grew up as a ‘colored’ girl during apartheid and later became a senior economist, set out to change this in one of the poorest corners of Mandela’s homeland. She is the recipient of the of the seventh annual John P. McNulty Prize.

Réjane founded the Bulungula Incubator in 2007 - a model that is unique in that the community members it serves are also the core implementers of its comprehensive programs. These include preschool and early education resources for all children; access to health care including prenatal nutrition, childbirth assistance, comprehensive HIV testing, antiretroviral drugs; and infrastructure improvements such as clean water sources, and road and school construction.

“By finding a way to enact lasting change in this region, the Bulungula Incubator is a beacon for rural communities struggling with similar issues. Most importantly, these communities have ownership over the improvements they make, creating a virtuous cycle of civic involvement and improvement of quality of life,” said former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, a member of the McNulty Prize jury.

Abu Dhabi Home To Pascal Tepper’s Second Outlet

Baking will take place throughout the day, seven days a week at Pascal Tepper French Bakery in the Capital’s newest dine-in outlet

Abu Dhabi, UAE, January 12, 2015: Abu Dhabi is treated to a taste of home-baked French bread à la Pascal Tepper with the opening of the capital’s flagship contemporary dine-in Pascal Tepper French Bakery, this month.

The 750-square metre outlet, known as Pascal Tepper French Bakery Abu Dhabi, is part of a growing international network of modern, dine-in French cafes developed in the UAE, with its roots in rural France. It is located in the landmark IPIC Tower on Al Muroor Street.

According to Kolja Moosbrugger, Operations Manager, the bakery is a contemporary take on the traditional French bakery, where bread, Viennoiserie and pastries are baked fresh daily.  Meanwhile, he said that hot and cold dishes and desserts follow the seasons, guided by the daily selection of market-fresh produce.

He also confirmed that more outlets are preparing for earmarked for opening during the next 12 months in Lebanon and Qatar. These will be followed next year by Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman and Saudi Arabia.

He described Pascal Tepper French Bakery as ‘an internationally focused chain of modern, dine-in bakeries’ bearing the name of Pascal Tepper, a Master Baker from a long-tradition of French bakers who still insists that the base ingredients for a wide range of breads, Viennoiserie and pastries must be of French origin.
