JEBEL ALI PORT HITS NEW MONTHLY CONTAINER HANDLING RECORD

Dubai, UAE – 30 August 2024: DP World's Jebel Ali Port set a new monthly container throughput record in July, handling 1,400,000 TEUs (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units) and topping its previous high set in 2015.

This follows a strong performance in the first half of 2024, with the port handling 7.3 million TEUs, up 3.9% year on year, driven by strong inbound cargo movement, particularly from key Asian markets including China, Japan, and South Korea. 

The port’s record-breaking performance reflects the continued growth of Dubai under the broader strategic objectives of Dubai Economic Agenda D33. The ongoing expansion of Jafza is also instrumental in driving container traffic through Jebel Ali Port. Now hosting nearly 10,500 companies, Jafza continues to attract leading international corporations, bolstering trade volumes and economic diversification.

متابعة رحلاتهم بسلاسة من خلال رحلات ربط عبر الشبكات المشتركة لطيران الإمارات وشركائها.   وتقدم طيران الإمارات مجموعة متنوعة من خيارات السفر الإضافية، عبر شراكاتها الجديدة أو القائمة، والتي تصل إلى 162 شراكة في أكثر من 100 دولة، وتتضمن 31 شراكة لتبادل الرموز، و118 شراكة إنترلاين، و13 شراكة للنقل متعدد الوسائط، الأمر الذي يسهم في توسيع نطاق شبكة الوجهات التي تصلها الناقلة وتوفير المزيد من رحلات PCE: Wall Street poised for new highs when Fed pivots in September?

 

​ August 30 2024 ​ ​ When the Federal Reserve cuts interest rates at its September meeting, as is now widely expected, Wall Street could hit fresh highs, predicts the CEO of one of the world’s largest independent financial advisory and asset management organizations. ​ The bullish prediction from Nigel Green of deVere Group comes as the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge (PCE) for July showed a sustainable trend of disinflation.  ​ The Bureau of Economic Analysis released the personal consumption expenditures price index on Friday, showing a slight annual increase in the pace of inflation to 2.6% from the 2.5% rate recorded in June. ​ He says: “There’s really no way that the Fed isn’t going to cut rates in September. The question now is – how aggressively will they move?  ​ “We are pushing for a supersized 50-basis point cut next month.  ​ “With rates currently sitting at a more than two-decade high, there’s no room for hesitation. A 25-basis point cut might signal a shift, but it’s not the aggressive action needed to stave off a potentially devastating hard landing. ​ “The case for a bold 50-basis point cut in September is clear. This move would send a powerful signal that the Fed is serious about steering the US economy away from the brink of a recession.   ​ “Follow that with two more 25-basis point cuts in November and December, and the Fed would not only be addressing immediate concerns, but also setting the stage for sustainable economic growth.” ​ The potential for a rate cut has Wall Street buzzing with anticipation. After months of uncertainty and mixed signals from the Fed, a decisive move in September could spark a new rally in the stock market.  ​ “If the central bank delivers a significant rate reduction, we would expect to see major indexes like the S&P 500 and NASDAQ reach fresh highs next month,” predicts the deVere CEO. ​ “The tech sector, in particular, stands to benefit from lower interest rates. Cyclical sectors, such as consumer discretionary and industrials, could also see a resurgence as consumer spending and business investment pick up in response to the Fed’s action.” ​ However, this rally wouldn’t lift all boats equally. Investors must be discerning in their stock picks.  ​ “While lower interest rates will benefit many sectors, not all companies are positioned to capitalize on the potential market upswing. Strong balance sheets, consistent earnings growth, and sustainable business models will be key to the new landscape for investors,” notes Nigel Green. ​ As Wall Street braces for a potential breakout next month, all eyes are on the Federal Reserve.  ​ He concludes: “The PCE data Friday pushes the case for a bold 50-basis point rate cut in September, which we believe would be the catalyst for fresh highs on Wall Street.  ​ “Investors are ready to seize the opportunities.”

Green cooperation speeds up South Africa's steps in energy transition

BEIJING, Aug. 30, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- A report from People's Daily: "Just a bit further ahead, and we'll be able to see our solar tower," said Li Quanxiang, project manager of the 100-megawatt Redstone Concentrated Solar Thermal Power, a solar power tower with molten salt energy storage in South Africa's Northern Cape province, when a massive gray-white tower gradually came into view as his car drove through the vast desert.

The project, built by SEPCOIII Electric Power Construction Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of PowerChina, is the first molten salt solar thermal project in sub-Saharan Africa.

"The solar tower is nearly 250 meters tall, about the height of a 100-story building. At the very top is a heat collection device, which absorbs sunlight reflected from mirrors on the ground. Solar energy is converted into thermal energy, which is then transformed into electrical power," Li said.

It is learned that the project has a designed capacity of 100 megawatts. It is expected to supply 480 gigawatt-hours of electricity to South Africa's power grid annually, providing electricity to 200,000 South African households.

"This project is the largest investment in the Northern Cape province and is part of South Africa's renewable energy procurement program. It has strategic significance for achieving South Africa's energy transition goals," said Northern Cape Premier Zamani Saul

He said that the project has created over 600 direct jobs for the local community, with employment reaching its highest point at about 1,800 workers during construction, making a significant contribution to local economic and social development.

The 100-megawatt Redstone Concentrated Solar Thermal Power project is an epitome of the deepening energy cooperation between China and South Africa. During his visit to the project, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa noted that the Chinese enterprise has achieved world-leading standards in engineering quality and technological advancements, and the smooth progress of the project will bring significant benefits to the South African people.

South Africa isn't just rich in solar resources; it also has enormous potential for wind power generation. According to estimates, over 80 percent of South Africa's territory enjoys the natural conditions for wind power development. The eastern and southern coastal areas, in particular, are prime locations for wind power projects and have become pioneering sites for wind energy cooperation between China and South Africa.

Goldwind, a Chinese wind turbine manufacturer, entered the South African market in 2015. Since then, the company has built and been operating two wind power projects in the Eastern Cape Province. With a total installed capacity of 152.5 megawatts, these projects supply green, clean electricity to 155,000 South African households annually.

In 2017, the De Aar wind power project, developed by the South African subsidiary of China's Longyuan Power, began operations in the Northern Cape province of South Africa. It is the first wind power project in Africa invested, built and operated by a Chinese power company.

According to engineer Liu Lei of the project, these wind turbines have a main tower height of 80 meters and a rotor blade diameter of 86 meters. The project comprises a total of 163 turbines. With an average annual power generation of 760 million kilowatt-hours, the project supplies electricity to thousands of South African households.

As a landmark achievement of China-South Africa cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative, the De Aar wind power project not only supports local economic and social development with green electricity but also maintains the local ecological balance through environmentally friendly practices.

During a visit to the wind farm, the reporter noticed springboks appearing intermittently in the distance and eagles occasionally circling in the sky. A local said, "At the top of each power pole, we've installed perches for birds to reduce the harm that transmission equipment might cause to them. The company conducts long-term monitoring of animals and plants within the wind farm and hires ecological experts for assessments to ensure the project's sustainable development."

"The De Aar wind power project is a flagship project showcasing win-win cooperation between South Africa and China in the new energy sector," said the house chairperson for committees at the National Assembly of South Africa ,Cedric Thomas Frolick .

He added, "South Africa is expanding its renewable energy development and enhancing its green energy supply capacity. We hope Chinese companies will leverage their technological and innovative advantages to actively participate in the construction of new energy projects in South Africa."

"Looking ahead, cooperation in new energy sector is likely to become a new area of growth and highlight in the economic and trade relations between our two countries," said Chen Xiaodong, former Chinese Ambassador to South Africa.

He emphasized that China and South Africa share common development needs and have strong complementary advantages in the new energy sector, which enables them to be reliable friends and strong partners in each other's economic and social transformation.

سوزهو، الصين, 30 غشت/آب 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- اعتمد المنجم المكشوف (المشار إليه في ما يلي بِـ"المنجم") الذي يقع في منغوليا الداخلية، الصين، مؤخراً حل البناء الشامل غير المأهول للمناجم من XCMG Machinery (المشار إليها في ما يلي بٍـ: "XCMG", SHE:000425) لأحدث ممارساتها في التعدين المكشوف الأخضر والذكي. مع اعتماد دفعة من شاحنات التعدين الكهربائية ذاتية القيادة ZNK95، سيقلل المنجم من استهلاك 47000 طن من الديزل وانبعاث 149000 من الكربون بعد توسيع نطاقه إلى نشر 300 وحدة بحلول عام 2026.

تعد ZNK95 شاحنة تفريغ التعدين الذكية، التي تبلغ سعة حمولتها القصوى 85 طنًا، أكبر شاحنة تفريغ ذاتية التشغيل تعمل بالطاقة الكهربائية متوفرة حاليًا وإحدى شاحنات التعدين ذاتية القيادة الرائدة في مجال الطاقة الجديدة في هذه الصناعة. تتميز الشاحنة بتصميم بدون مقصورة، وهي قادرة تمامًا على العمل على ارتفاعات عالية وفي بيئات شديدة البرودة تصل إلى -40 درجة مئوية. تم تجهيز هذه الشاحنة بنظام محرك كهربائي متزامن مغناطيسي دائم مخصص للتعدين، يلبي متطلبات الحمولة الثقيلة والانحدار الحاد لشاحنات التعدين.

Siemens and the General Authority for Industrial Development sign MoU to advance localized manufacturing and industrial innovation

Siemens has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the General Authority for Industrial Development, marking a major step towards advancing localized manufacturing of low and medium voltage products. This strategic agreement aims to elevate Egypt’s industrial capabilities and strengthen its position as a key player in the Middle East and Africa's industrial landscape.

The MoU was signed by Mostafa El-Bagoury, CEO of Siemens Egypt, and Dr. Nahed Youssef Chairwoman of the Industrial Development Authority and witnessed by Stephan May, CEO of Electrification and Automation, Siemens AG, and Andreas Matthe, CEO of Electrical Products, Siemens AG. His Excellency Lieutenant General Kamel Al Wazir,  Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport, attended the signing on behalf of the Egyptian government, underscoring the government's commitment to fostering industrial growth and technological innovation.

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, August 31, 2024: The number and quality of students taking up graduate studies in artificial intelligence (AI) specializations at Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) – the world’s first graduate AI university dedicated to research – continue to rise. This month, MBZUAI welcomed its largest and most diverse intake ever at a series of on-campus orientation events.

 

Academic seats were competitive, with more than 4800 applications received and a very competitive admission rate of 5%. This latest batch of 209 students includes the university’s first-ever computer science (CS) and robotics cohorts, having established two new departments and four associated graduate programs last year.

 

“This growth is a true testament to the university’s position as a leading institution in the AI landscape worldwide and our dedication to using AI for good to address real-world problems and have a positive impact on society and industry,” MBZUAI’s Provost, Professor Timothy Baldwin, said.

 

“A key factor in attracting international students and faculty to MBZUAI is the university’s reputation for diversity and inclusion, its research capabilities, compulsory internships, and the introduction and success of the Undergraduate Research Internship Program (UGRIP). The program has seen 79 international undergraduate students visit the Masdar City Campus during a four-week period in 2023 and 2024. Impressively, more than 50% of the participants in UGRIP’s inaugural edition applied and received offers to join MBZUAI this year.”

The Fall 2024 cohort represents 36 countries, including 44 Emiratis, with 147 studying for master’s degrees and 62 pursuing Ph.D. degrees in CS, computer vision (CV), machine learning (ML), natural language processing (NLP), and robotics.

 

The student body now stands at 381 students (30% female: 70% male) representing 49 countries.

 

This year, MBZUAI is building three new departments dedicated to human-computer interaction (HCI), statistics and data science, and computational biology, to help further develop the institution’s unique offerings, as well as interdisciplinary curriculum and research projects. MBZUAI continues to support the UAE’s ambitious innovation trajectory and provide a diverse pipeline of cutting-edge talent for local industry and applications markets.

أبوظبي، الإمارات العربية المتحدة، 31 أغسطس 2024: تشهد جامعة محمد بن زايد للذكاء الاصطناعي، أول جامعة على مستوى العالم للدراسات العليا المتخصصة ببحوث الذكاء الاصطناعي، ارتفاعاً ملحوظاً في عدد الطلاب الذين يواصلون دراساتهم العليا فيها بمختلف تخصصات الذكاء الاصطناعي، والمستوى الأكاديمي الذي يتمتع به الطلاب الذين تستقطبهم الجامعة من مختلف أنحاء العالم. فقد استقبلت الجامعة هذا الشهر أكبر دفعة من الطلاب وأكثرها تنوعاً منذ تأسيسها، وذلك ضمن سلسلة من الفعاليات التوجيهية التي أقامتها داخل حرمها الجامعي بمدينة مصدر في أبوظبي.

 

وتلقت الجامعة أكثر من 4800 طلباً للالتحاق ببرامجها، فيما بلغت نسبة القبول 5%، إذ تنافس الطلاب بشدّة على المقاعد الأكاديمية المتاحة. وقد ضمت هذه الدفعة 209 طلاب، من بينهم طلاب الدفعة الأولى في مجال علوم الحاسوب وعلم الروبوتات، وذلك بعد أن أطلقت الجامعة قسمين جديدين وأربعة برامج دراسات عليا في هذين المجالين خلال العام الماضي.

 

وتعليقاً على هذا الإقبال الشديد من الطلاب، قال البروفيسور تيموثي بالدوين، عميد جامعة محمد بن زايد للذكاء الاصطناعي: "تؤكد أعداد الطلاب المتزايدة على مكانة الجامعة الراسخة كمؤسسة تعليمية بحثية رائدة في مجال الذكاء الاصطناعي على مستوى العالم، وتعكس تفانينا في تسخير الذكاء الاصطناعي لمعالجة المشاكل التي تواجهها الإنسانية لنترك تأثيراً إيجابياً في المجتمع والقطاعات كافة. وتتمتع الجامعة بالعديد من المقومات التي تستقطب أفضل الطلاب وأعضاء الهيئة التدريسية من جميع أنحاء العالم، وأبرزها إنجازاتها الأكاديمية والتنوع الذي تتميز به، وإمكاناتها البحثية، والتدريب الإلزامي الذي تقدمه لطلابها.  كما أطلقت الجامعة برنامج التدريب البحثي للطلاب الجامعيين والذي حقق نجاحاً باهراً، ففي إطار البرنامج زار 79 طالباً عالمياً الحرم الجامعي في مدينة مصدر خلال أربعة أسابيع في عامي 2023 و2024. وتقدم أكثر من 50% من المشاركين في النسخة الافتتاحية من برنامج التدريب البحثي للطلاب الجامعيين بطلبات الالتحاق، وتلقوا عروضاً للانضمام إلى جامعة محمد بن زايد للذكاء الاصطناعي هذا العام".

 

وأضاف البروفيسور بالديون: "لقد واصلنا تعزيز مكانتنا ضمن التصنيفات العالمية بفضل بحوثنا التي تترك تأثيراً ملحوظاً في مجال الذكاء الاصطناعي والتي يعمل عليها الطلاب والباحثون وأعضاء الهيئة التدريسية. إذ إنّ طلاب السنة الأولى والثانية ينشرون بحوثهم في أفضل المجلات والمؤتمرات المتخصصة في هذا المجال في العالم، ويستكمل أعضاء الهيئة التدريسية هذه الجهود الاستثنائية لإعداد الجيل القادم من المتخصصين الذين سيقودون ابتكارات الذكاء الاصطناعي في المستقبل، مع الإشارة إلى أن نسبة الطلاب إلى الهيئة التدريسية تبلغ 5 طلاب لكل أستاذ".

 

وواصلت الجامعة استقطاب الطلاب من ذوي الكفاءات والمهارات العالية، حيث تضم 39 طالباً من أفضل 100 جامعة في العالم في مجال الذكاء الاصطناعي، بما في ذلك جامعة كورنيل، وجامعة تسينغهوا، وجامعة كاليفورنيا في سان دييغو، وجامعة إدنبرة، وكلية لندن الجامعية.
