Sharjah, UAE. March 22, 2023–Engineers have always used their creativity to push the boundaries of what was once thought to be impossible. From the invention of the wheel to modern-day space exploration, engineering techniques have enabled humans to achieve incredible feats. In a recent talk titled "Using Engineering Techniques to Push the Boundaries of the Possible", Dr. Slim Saidi from American University of Sharjah (AUS) discussed how these techniques are being used to take humans into a new era of possibilities.
Dr. Saidi is a visiting Associate Professor of Industrial Engineering at AUS. He has a PhD from the Ecole Polytechnique of Montreal, Canada; a Graduate Diploma in Business Administration (DSA) from HEC Business School, Montreal; and a degree in industrial engineering from ENIT, Tunisia. He has extensive experience in innovation, international strategy and management and has advised executives globally. Dr. Saidi has held several senior executive positions in government and private organizations in the Middle East and Africa and was a partner with global management and strategy consultants. His areas of expertise include digital transformation, strategy, customer experience, operational efficiency, cost optimization, supply chain strategy and operation and quality management.
In his talk to the AUS community, Dr. Saidi delved into how engineering techniques are being used in human augmentation and the metaverse to push the boundaries of the possible and inspire individuals to think creatively and innovate in their own fields. He examined the latest innovations in human augmentation and associated challenges, such as brain-computer interfaces, exoskeletons, implantable devices and how they are enhancing human capabilities, extending life expectancy and improving quality of life.
According to Dr. Saidi, engineering is all about pushing boundaries and exploring the unknown.
“With the latest advancements in human augmentation and the metaverse, we have the opportunity to take this exploration to new heights. By integrating advanced technologies with human biology, we can create a world where physical and virtual realities merge seamlessly," he said.
Dr. Vian Ahmed from the Department of Industrial Engineering hosted the talk and noted; "We are excited to have Dr. Saidi share his insights with us. His extensive experience in innovation, international strategy and management makes him the ideal person to explore the latest trends in human augmentation and the metaverse. الدكتور سعيدي هو أستاذ مساعد وزائر من قسم الهندسة الصناعية في الجامعة الأمريكية في الشارقة. وهو حاصل على درجة الدكتوراة من معهد البوليتكنيك في مونتريال في كندا، ودبلوم الدراسات العليا في إدارة الأعمال من جامعة "إتش إي سي" لإدارة الأعمال في مونتريال، وشهادة في الهندسة الصناعية من المدرسة الوطنية للمهندسين بتونس. يتمتع الدكتور سعيدي بخبرة واسعة في مجالي الابتكار والاستراتيجية الدولية والإدارية، كما قدم العديد من الاستشارات للمدراء التنفيذيين على مستوى العالم. شغل الدكتور سعيدي العديد من المناصب التنفيذية العليا في مؤسسات حكومية وخاصة في منطقة الشرق الأوسط وأفريقيا، وكان شريكًا مع مستشاري الإدارة والاستراتيجيات العالمية. تشمل خبراته التحول الرقمي والاستراتيجيات، وتجربة العملاء، والكفاءة التشغيلية، وتحسين التكلفة، واستراتيجيات سلاسل التوريد، وإدارة العمليات والجودة.
ركز الدكتور سعيدي خلال محاضرته على كيفية توظيف التقنيات الهندسية في التعزيز البشري وفي الميتافيرس لدفع الإمكانيات البشرية وإلهام الأفراد للتفكير بشكل مبتكر في مجالاتهم. كما تطرق إلى أحدث الابتكارات في التعزيز البشري والتحديات المرتبطة بها، مثل واجهات الدماغ والحاسوب، والهياكل الخارجية، والأجهزة القابلة للزرع وكيفية تعزيزها للقدرات البشرية وإطالة متوسط العمر المتوقع وتحسين جودة الحياة.
ومن جانبه، صرح الدكتور سعيدي بأن الهندسة تدور حول دفع الحدود البشرية واستكشاف المجهول قائلًا: "بالتزامن مع أحدث التطورات في التعزيز البشري والميتافيرس، أصبح لدينا الفرصة للانتقال بهذا الاستكشاف إلى آفاق جديدة. فمن خلال دمج التقنيات الحديثة مع علم الأحياء البشري، يمكننا خلق عالم تندمج فيه الحقائق المادية والافتراضية بسلاسة".
