New agreement to utilize AI to predict the response of neoadjuvant therapy
Egypt; February 6, 2022: GE Healthcare and Baheya Foundation recently announced a partnership to develop and validate the use of Artificial intelligence (AI) to assess and predict the response of neoadjuvant therapy – a type of chemotherapy – in locally advanced breast cancer. This includes a collaborative program with GE Healthcare that builds on its experience in women’s health, AI and contrast-enhanced spectral mammography (CESM), and Baheya’s clinical expertise in breast imaging.
More than 20 years ago, Baheya Wahbi – a member of a prominent Egyptian family – was diagnosed with breast cancer. She found that she could not get the care she needed in Egypt, necessitating travel to the United States and Europe for treatment. While abroad, she worried about the many other Egyptian women suffering from breast cancer but without the resources to enable them to travel.
This concern stayed with her and so, before her death, she asked her sons and daughters to buy and bring to Egypt the state-of-the-art radiation therapy machine that she was able to access when abroad. They agreed, but did even more. Instead of bringing just that one machine, they decided to honor their mother and her vision to help other women in Egypt by establishing an entire hospital in her name.
Located at the site of her house, the Baheya Foundation Hospital today is dedicated to the prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of women with breast cancer. To ensure all women in Egypt have access to world-class care, the hospital provides its service for free.
The foundation and hospital were established in 2015 and currently provide more than 7,000 early detection of breast cancer and 1500 chemotherapy sessions per month, and 3,000 radiation therapy session treatments a month in addition to 350 surgeries per month. These numbers will grow significantly when a new branch of the hospital opens in 2023 in the Sheikh Zayed west of Cairo.

Various diagnostic imaging technologies are currently used to predict and assess a patient’s response to neoadjuvant therapy, and AI has the potential to give clinicians an earlier indication that a patient is not responding to a given treatment regimen, thereby allowing a timely change of treatment. The result would be a reduction in unnecessary toxicity to the patient and a lower treatment cost for the hospital.
The project will explore the use of AI in CESM to assess response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy in advanced breast cancer as accurate indicator and predictor of response mimic postoperative pathological results and can precisely predict residual tumors percentage.
In patients with locally advanced breast cancer, neoadjuvant therapy is used before surgery to help reduce the size of a cancerous tumor. Initially targeted to patients whose cancer are not eligible for surgery, the uses of neoadjuvant therapy have extended to include patients whose cancers are operable but would be more feasible to surgery after this therapy.
As Baheya Foundation grows its operations and expands the number of patients it serves, this collaboration with GE Healthcare likewise seeks to expand clinical treatment options and further improve patient outcomes and experiences.

"جنرال إلكتريك للرعاية الصحية" ومؤسسة بهية تتعاونان لتحسين النتائج العلاجية لمرضى سرطان الثدي
اتفاقية جديدة بين الجانبين للاستفادة من الذكاء الاصطناعي في توقع الاستجابة للعلاج المساعد
مصر، 6 فبراير 2022: وقعت "جنرال إلكتريك للرعاية الصحية" مؤخراً اتفاقية شراكة مع مؤسسة بهية لتطوير القدرة على استخدام الذكاء الاصطناعي في تقييم العلاج المساعد وتوقع الاستجابة له، وهو نوع من العلاج الكيميائي، وذلك بين المرضى المصابين بسرطان الثدي المتقدم غير المنتشر. وتؤسس هذه الاتفاقية لبرنامج تعاوني مع "جنرال إلكتريك للرعاية الصحية" يستند إلى خبراتها في صحة المرأة والذكاء الاصطناعي والتصوير الشعاعي الطيفي محسن التباين للثدي، والخبرات السريرية لمؤسسة بهية في تصوير الثدي.
ومنذ أكثر من 20 عاماً، تم تشخيص السيدة بهية وهبي وهي ابنة إحدى العائلات المصرية المرموقة، بمرض سرطان الثدي. واكتشفت حينها صعوبة الحصول على الرعاية الصحية المطلوبة لهذا المرض في مصر، فاضطرت للسفر إلى الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية لتلقي العلاج. وأثناء وجودها هناك، كانت قلقة على العديد من النساء المصريات اللواتي يعانين من مرض السرطان ولا يمتلكن الموارد الكافية للسفر وتلقي العلاج.
وبقي هذا الأمر في ذاكرتها، لتطلب من أولادها قبل وفاتها شراء جهاز متقدم للعلاج الإشعاعي واستيراده إلى مصر وهو الجهاز الذي ساعد في علاجها أثناء وجودها في الولايات المتحدة. إلا أن أولادها لم يكتفوا بالاستجابة لطلب أمهم فحسب، بل قرروا تكريم ذكراها ورؤيتها بمساعدة النساء المصريات عبر تأسيس مستشفى كامل يحمل اسمها.
ومن موقعه في مكان منزلها، يختص مستشفى مؤسسة بهية اليوم في الوقاية من مرض سرطان الثدي وتشخيصه المبكر وعلاجه ويقدم خدماته للنساء المصابات بهذا المرض. وضماناً لحصول جميع النساء في مصر على الرعاية الصحية الضرورية، يحرص المستشفى على تقديم خدماته مجاناً.
وتأسس المستشفى والمؤسسة في عام 2015 ويقدمان حالياً أكثر من 7000 فحص مبكر لسرطان الثدي و1500 جلسة علاج كيميائي شهرياً، إلى جانب 3000 علاج إشعاعي و350 عمل جراحي في الشهر الواحد. وسترتفع هذه الأرقام بشكل كبير مع افتتاح فرع المستشفى الجديد عام 2023 بمدينة الشيخ زايد في القاهرة.
وفي هذا السياق، قال الدكتور محمد عمارة الرئيس التنفيذي لمستشفى بهية: "يواصل مستشفى بهية إجراء البحوث لتحسين الخدمات المقدمة، إضافة على توفير الرعاية المباشرة للنساء. ويمثل مركزاً للتميز ويقدم أحدث التقنيات بالتعاون مع شركات رائدة في القطاع ويحرص على مواكبة مختلف التطورات العلاجية لترسيخ مكانته كمستشفى رائد في مصر ومنطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال أفريقيا".

من جانبه قال البروفيسور الدكتور محمد جمعة رئيس قسم الاشعة بمركز بهية للكشف المبكر وعلاج سرطان الثدي: "في إطار التزامنا بالاستمرار بإجراء البحوث في هذا المجال، يأتي تعاوننا مع ’جنرال إلكتريك للرعاية الصحية‘ لتسخير قوة الذكاء الاصطناعي وجمعها مع التجارب السريرية لتوسيع معارفنا بالقدرات التي يقدمها العلاج المساعد لتحسين النتائج المقدمة للمرضى في مستشفى بهية ومختلف مرافق الرعاية الصحية الأخرى".
ويتم اليوم استخدام العديد من تقنيات التصوير التشخيصية لدراسة وتقييم استجابة المرضى للعلاجات المساعدة، في حين يمنح الذكاء الاصطناعي كوادر الرعاية السريرية مؤشرات مبكرة حول عدم استجابة المريض للخطة العلاجية المطبقة، بما يتيح لهم إجراء تغيير سريع في طريقة العلاج. وستعود هذه العملية بفائدة كبيرة تتمثل في تقليل السمية غير الضرورية التي يتعرض لها المريض والحد من تكلفة العلاج للمستشفى.
وسيعمل المشروع على دراسة استخدام الذكاء الاصطناعي ضمن "التصوير الشعاعي الطيفي المتباين للثدي" (CESM)، لتقييم الاستجابة للعلاج الكيميائي المساعد في سرطان الثدي المتقدم كمؤشر دقيق ومؤشر للاستجابة ليحاكي النتائج المرضية بعد الجراحة والتنبؤ بنسبة الأورام المتبقية بدقة.
وبالنسبة للمرضى المصابين بسرطان الثدي المتقدم غير المنتشر، يتم استخدام العلاج المساعد قبل الجراحة للمساعدة في تقليل حجم الورم السرطاني. واستهدف العلاج في البداية المرضى غير المؤهلين لإجراء الجراحة، وتم توسيعه نطاقه ليشمل المرضى المؤهلين، حيث يجعل هذا العلاج من العمل الجراحي أكثر جدوى.
وتحرص مؤسسة بهية على توسيع عملياتها وزيادة عدد المرضى الذين تخدمهم، ويسعى هذا التعاون مع "جنرال إلكتريك للرعاية الصحية" لتعزيز خيارات العلاج السريري وتحسين النتائج العلاجية والتجارب المقدمة للمرضى.
