AUC TO DISCUSS RAFIC AL HARIRI’S ASSASSINATION IN “REPORTING HISTORY” WEBINAR SERIES

WHAT

The American University in Cairo (AUC) is organizing a virtual webinar titled “Reporting History: Rafic al Hariri’s Assassination,” which is the second webinar of the series of virtual public webinars titled “Reporting History” that aims to explore historical events from the perspectives of journalists who covered them in the field.

The webinar will include first-hand stories from Yazbek Wehbe, Lebanese news anchor and reporter at Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation International, who was one of the very last journalists to meet Al Hariri before he was killed. Wehbe will share his testimony about the assassination and its aftermath, how the media handled it and was affected by it, and the personal challenges of reporting events that polarize one’s own community.

The assassination of former Prime Minister of Lebanon Rafic Al Hariri on February 14, 2005, was a turning point in the history of Lebanon and arguably the Middle East. It brought an abrupt end to the power arrangements that had governed the country since the end of the Lebanese Civil War and ushered in an era of turmoil that still marks Lebanon to this very day.

The event will be moderated by Khaled Ezzelarab ‘02, associate professor of practice at The Department of Journalism and Mass Communications (JRMC), AUC, and former senior news editor at SkyNews Arabia.

The event is open to the public and will be held in Arabic.
