British American Tobacco announces progress on COVID-19 vaccine

Potential COVID-19 vaccine ready to move to the next phase of testing



Cairo, 19 May 2020: Following an announcement last April in regard to developing a COVID-19 vaccine from tobacco leaves, British American Tobacco announced that it is now ready to test its potential COVID-19 vaccine on humans, after it generated a positive immune response in pre-clinical trials.

With the possibility of producing 1 to 3 million doses per week, if it got the support of government agencies and the right manufacturers, British American Tobacco, is awaiting approval from the FDA for the vaccine. On approval, it would progress to Phase 1 trials or testing on humans.

London-based BAT said it had submitted a pre-investigative new drug application to the FDA and that the agency had acknowledged the submission. The tobacco manufacturer believes that they could start as early as late June, pending the responses from relevant health bodies, and have invested in additional equipment to boost their manufacturing capabilities should they be needed.

BAT said it was also talking with other government agencies around the world about the vaccine, and have contributed in several ways to support nations with facing the covid-19 pandemic.



British American Tobacco Chief Executive, Jack Bowles recently highlighted that “The company has provided support either through loaning R&D equipment and expertise, donating funds and utilizing our distribution networks to ensure that medical and hygiene equipment reaches vulnerable communities. As the COVID-19 situation evolves, the type of support required globally, and in the communities where we operate, will undoubtedly change. BAT’s support around the world will flex and evolve, responding to the ever-changing needs that this crisis creates.”

بعد إعلانها في أبريل الماضي عن تطوير لقاح ضد فيروس كورونا المستجد COVID-19 من أوراق التبغ، أعلنت شركة بريتيش أمريكان توباكو BAT، أنها مستعدة الآن لاختبار لقاحها المحتمل لفيروس كورونا المستجد COVID-19 على البشر، وذلك بعد أن ولدت استجابة مناعية إيجابية في التجارب ما قبل السريرية.

وستتمكن من إنتاج ما بين مليون و3 ملايين جرعة أسبوعيًا، إذا حصلت على دعم من الوكالات الحكومية والشركات المصنعة المناسبة، وهي حالياً في انتظار موافقة إدارة الغذاء والدواء على اللقاح، للانتقال إلى المرحلة الأولى من تجارب الاختبار على البشر.

وقالت شركة بريتش امريكان توباكو BAT، ومقرها لندن، إنها قدمت طلبًا جديدًا للتحقيق المسبق إلى إدارة الغذاء والدواء (FDA) وإن الوكالة قد أقرت بذلك، حيث تعتقد شركة تصنيع التبغ أنها يمكن أن تبدأ في وقت مبكر في أواخر يونيو، وهي بانتظار ردود الهيئات الصحية المعنية بالأمر، كما أنها قامت بالاستثمار في معدات إضافية لتعزيز قدراتها التصنيعية إذا لزم الأمر.

وأضافت الشركة أنها تتواصل مع وكالات حكومية أخرى حول العالم بخصوص اللقاح، وساهمت بعدة طرق لدعم الدول في مواجهة جائحة فيروس كورونا المستجد.

وأشار جاك بولز، الرئيس التنفيذي لشركة بريتيش أميركان توباكو BAT إلى أن الشركة قدمت مؤخراً الدعم من خلال توفير معدات البحث والتطوير والخبرة إلى جانب التبرع بالمال، واستخدام شبكات التوزيع لدينا لضمان وصول المعدات الطبية وأدوات التعقيم إلى المجتمعات النامية التي تأثرت بالأوضاع، مضيفاً أنه مع تطور وضع فيروس كورونا المستجد، سيتغير بلا شك نوع الدعم المطلوب عالميًا، وبالتالي سوف يتوافق دعم بريتش أمريكان توباكو BAT حول العالم و بالأخص في المجتمعات التي نعمل بها، بما يتناسب ويتماشى مع الاحتياجات المتغيرة باستمرار التي تخلقها هذه الأزمة.
