ABB Egypt participates in Green Talks - a High-Level Expert Panel on Waste Practices and Energy at the Swedish Embassy in Cairo

Cairo, November 4, 2018: ABB Egypt participated in a high-level expert panel under the title of “Green Talks: Sustainable Approaches to Waste Management” hosted by the Swedish Embassy, which aims at shedding light on the best practices in the management and recycling of waste and converting it into energy. The event was held in cooperation with the Egypt National Cleaner Production Center and saw participation from both Swedish and Egyptian experts in the field. The session was attended by a large number ofrepresentatives and experts representing academia, government, multinational enterprises and cleantech startups.

His Excellency, Mr. Jan Thesleff, Swedish Ambassador to Egypt, inaugurated the session and welcomed all participants: "In order to solve the challenges of our time, we need to bring together different stakeholders with matching skills and visions. Sweden is proud of the triple helix model, a collaborative method through which academia, government and the private sector work together to create synergies to solve societal challenges, including innovative solutions to waste and energy. Egypt and Sweden are facing similar challenges and we both have experiences to share”. He continued to by accentuating Sweden’s commitment to Agenda 2030: “We are happy to be able to create a platform to further the dialogue around such an important issue that favor sustainable environmental and economic development. Egypt and Sweden are both fully committed to the SDGs and Agenda 2030.”

From his part, Eng. Medhat Fayek, Deputy CEO of ABB Egypt, presented the latest integrated systems and the best control systems and electrical solutions for waste-to-energy plants from sorting process to final stages, depending on the type of the waste. "We have more than 50 years of experience in creating advanced solutions to manage waste-to-energy plants, reducing time, cost and risk, and maximizing efficiency and readiness to maximize energy utilization while preserving natural resources and the environment. Waste-to-Energy is a tremendous way not only to reduce waste, it is a way to recover valuable resources and a vital part of the sustainable waste management chain to become a legitimate addition to the recycling process," said Medhat Fayek.

He added: "The transformation process from waste to energy is a valuable source of renewable energy, where the plant transforms waste into electrical or thermal energy to be used in industrial processing or central heating systems. These are environmentally safe and cost-effective energy recovery solutions. And we, at ABB, can provide integrated solutions to manage, control and automate such facilities efficiently, which will significantly help reduce waste storage, allowing a more consistent waste recycling process and waste exploitation to the fullest“.
