Speakers at the event were Alexander Nakhabov, Acting Dean of Physics and Power Engineering Faculty of National Research Nuclear University MEPhI, Russia’s leading nuclear university, with a presentation on ‘Nuclear power plants as a basis of a country’s sustainable development’, and Yury Borisov, Vice-president of the Russian Trade Union of Nuclear Power and Industry Workers, who spoke on the socio-economic benefits of developing nuclear power.

In his presentation, Alexander Nakhabov stressed the role of nuclear power plant construction in driving a country’s social and economic potential due to the development of the infrastructure, education and related fields. He also highlighted the safety and environmental friendliness of nuclear power technologies. “NPP construction invariable has a strong positive effect on the entire economy, providing the country with affordable and stable electricity and driving growth not only in related fields, such as construction, but other economic areas, including tourism and consumer goods. Nuclear power is a green, clean and safe energy source. NPPs produce no emissions; in fact, over the past 45 years all of the world’s NPPs have prevented the emission of 45 gigatonnes of CO2,” Alexander Nakhabov said.

Yury Borisov spoke of the social and economic benefits of developing nuclear power. “Nuclear power development is inextricably linked to the country’s economic, industrial and energy potential. It has its impacts on education, training cadre for the nuclear industry and upgrading the personnel’s qualifications, as well as creating a sustainable and comfortable environment for the workers. Russia has a well-developed system for personnel training, industrial safety and security, and social programs for nuclear industry workers and their families – and we are actively developing cooperation and knowledge exchange with our colleagues from trade unions in other countries,” Yori Borisov added.
