Strategic Investment In R&D Essential To Ensure Economic Prosperity And Health Security
Doha, Qatar, 23 March 2016: An informative health panel session that highlighted the progress that has been made to advance the national cancer and diabetes strategies took place as part of Qatar Foundation Research and Development’s (QF R&D) Annual Research Conference 2016 (ARC’16).
The session, entitled ‘Biomedical and Health Research in Qatar: Transforming Challenges into Competitive Advantages and Economic Opportunities’ dealt with two of the nation’s Research Grand Challenges pillars in the Qatar National Research Strategy (QNRS).
A key topic of discussion during the session was the prevalence of diabetes in Qatar and effective strategies that can be employed to reduce the number of people suffering from the illness.

The session highlighted the major achievements made by the National Center for Cancer Care and Research at Hamad Medical Corporation, which contribute towards advancing Qatar as a regional leader in cancer research and care. The session closed with two presentations on the progress that has been made on the implementation of the Qatar Genome Project (QGP), which was announced by Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development (QF) at the World Innovation Summit on Health (WISH) in 2013. The Project is currently being spearheaded by Qatar Biobank and Sidra Medical and Research Center.
The session was organised, chaired and moderated by Dr Hilal Lashuel, from Qatar Biomedical Research Institute (QBRI) who emphasised in his opening remarks the critical importance of continuing to invest in basic and translational research for the national economy and for improving the quality of life and healthcare in Qatar.
Dr Lashuel said: “Investment in research and development today is essential for ensuring economic prosperity and health security tomorrow. It is not an option, not a luxury, but is a must to fulfill Qatar National Vision 2030 and Qatar’s National Health Strategy.”
The session and panel discussion brought to light the economic implications that accompany dependency on assistance from the outside world. It highlighted the great investment opportunities and economic returns from investing in research that could yield innovative strategies and technologies for early detection and prevention of diseases such as diabetes and cancer.
The speakers and panellists provided clear examples that illustrate how current investment in research is already impacting the quality of healthcare in the country. They also dicussed the potential of more investment in research and how it could position Qatar as a leader in the region, thereby fueling future innovations and economic opportunities.
They included scientists and industry experts that are playing an instrumental role in the implementation of the national health strategies and the Qatar Genome Programme. They include Dr Hadi Abderrahim, Qatar Biobank; Dr Francesco Marincola, Sidra Medical and Research Center; Dr Alexander Knuth, National Center for Cancer Care and Research; Dr Abdul-Badi Abou-Samra, Hamad Medical Corporation and Qatar Metabolic Institute; and Dr Erik Stenehjem, Office of Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer, QF R&D.

الاستثمار الاستراتيجي في البحوث والتطوير مهم جداً لضمان الازدهار الاقتصادي والأمان الصحي
23 مارس 2016 (الدوحة، قطر): تخللت فعاليات مؤتمر مؤسسة قطر السنوي للبحوث 2016 المنعقد حالياً في الدوحة، عقد جلسة نقاشية بعنوان "البحوث الطبية الحيوية والصحية في قطر: تحويل التحديات إلى مزايا تنافسية وفرص اقتصادية"، تم خلالها تسليط الضوء على التطور الكبير الذي تحقق في تطوير الاستراتيجيات الوطنية الخاصة بمرضى السرطان والسكري، باعتبارهما من أهم تحديات البحث الوطنية الكبرى وفقاً استراتيجية قطر الوطنية للبحوث.
ومن الموضوعات الرئيسية التي ناقشتها الجلسة انتشار مرض السكري في قطر، والاستراتيجيات الفاعلة التي يمكن تطويرها للوقاية من المرض والسيطرة عليه لدى المصابين به.
كما سلطت الجلسة الضوء على الإنجازات الكبرى التي تم تحقيقها في المركز الوطني لعلاج وأبحاث السرطان في مؤسسة حمد الطبية، بهدف وضع قطر في موقع الريادة في مجال طب وأبحاث السرطان على مستوى المنطقة. واخُتتمت الجلسة بعرضين تقديميين حول التطور المحرز في ما يتعلق ببرنامج قطر جينوم الذي أعلنت عنه صاحبة السمو الشيخة موزا بنت ناصر خلال قمة مؤتمر القمة العالمي للابتكار في الرعاية الصحية "ويش" عام 2013، وينضوي تحت إطار قطر بيوبنك ومركز سدرة للطب والبحوث.
نظم الجلسة وأدارها الدكتور هلال الأشول، معهد قطر لبحوث الطب الحيوي، والذي ركز في كلمته الافتتاحية على أهمية مواصلة الاستثمار في البحوث، سواء في المراحل الأولية أو الانتقالية بهدف دعم الاقتصاد الوطني والارتقاء بنوعية الحياة والرعاية الصحية في قطر. وأكد الدكتور الأشول في كلمته على أن أغلب الأدوية التي تُعطى للمرضى تم تطويرها وفقاً لفهم محددات الأمراض وعوامل الخطورة التي وجدت لدى المجتمع الغربي، بينما يتطلب تطوير علاجات فاعلة إيجاد فهم عميق للسمات المتفردة لسكان الدولة، ودراسة التركيبة الاجتماعية والبيئية والمحددات البيولوجية للأمراض التي تصيب هذه الشعوب ضمن بيئاتهم المحلية.
كما سلّطت الجلسة والحلقة النقاشية الضوء على الآثار الناتجة عن الاعتماد على الخارج، مقابل ما تحقيقه من فرص استثمارية وعوائد اقتصادية تنتج عن الاستثمار في البحوث محلياً، وما يتضمنه ذلك من استراتيجيات مبتكرة وتقنيات تسهم في الكشف المبكر والوقائي عن أمراض مثل السكري والسرطان.
وعرض المتحدثون والمشاركون في الحلقة النقاشية أمثلة توضح أثر الاستثمار المتبع حالياً على جودة الرعاية الصحية في الدولة، وزيادة فرص الاستثمار في البحوث، والتي يمكنها أن تضع قطر في موقع رائد في مجال البحث العلمي بالمنطقة، وبما يدعم الابتكارات المستقبلية والفرص الاقتصادية.
وعلّق الدكتور الأشول في ختام الجلسة بالقول: "إن الاستثمار في البحوث والتطوير مهم جداً اليوم لضمان الازدهار الاقتصادي والأمان الصحي في الغد. وهذا ليس خيار ولا رفاهية، بل ضرورة تسهم في تحقيق رؤية قطر الوطنية 2030 والاستراتيجية الوطنية للصحة".
وكان من بين المشاركين في الجلسة والحلقة النقاشية علماء ومتخصصين في مجالاتهم سبق لهم أن لعبوا دوراً قيادياً في تنفيذ الاستراتيجية الوطنية للصحة وبرنامج قطر جينوم، وهم الدكتور هادي عبد الرحيم، مدير قطر بيوبنك للبحوث الطبية، والدكتور فرانسيسكو مارينكولا، من مركز السدرة للطب والبحوث، والدكتور إلكسندر نوث، من المركز الوطني لعلاج وأبحاث السرطان في قطر؛ والدكتور عبد البديع أبو سمرة، من مؤسسة حمد الطبية، والدكتور إريك ستينهام، من مكتب الملكية الفكرية ونقل التكنولوجيا، في قطاع البحوث والتطوير بمؤسسة قطر.
