With the support of Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah of Jordan, Google launches its biggest Street View capture yet in the Arab world
November 23rd, 2015, Egypt - Google announced today the launch of 360-degree street view imagery of Petra and 30 other landmarks in Jordan for the first time.
Street View Special Collects is a feature of Google Maps that lets users explore places around the world like landmarks, natural wonders, as well as culturally and historically significant sites. Today, anyone with an internet connection can explore Rose-city of Petra, The Dead Sea, the monuments of Jerash, Qasr Al Kharana, Mount Nebo and more.
Google used the Trekker which is a wearable Street View backpack with a camera system on top that is designed to go down footpaths, tracks and narrow pathways to get images of areas of natural beauty or tourist sites.
Ulf Spitzer, Global Lead for the Google Street View Program, stated: “The Google Street View team goes to amazing places around the world because we know that our users love to see them and experience them online. Jordan is one of the most spectacular places that we have visited - thanks to the amazing support and warm hospitality that was extended. We hope our imagery conveys all the grace, beauty and deep heritage of the country.”
Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah, in a blog post about the launch, said that with Google Maps Street View, "people all over the world now have a window into our magical Kingdom in the heart of the Middle East. It is a great taster of what visitors can expect when they come to Jordan…” The Queen added that this technology also "provides a lens on the past. And when we understand more about each other’s stories and cultures and histories, we realize that we are more alike than we are different. That’s why we must preserve these treasures for future generations. They’re a doorway to our shared narrative.”
Google worked closely with the Office of Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah who was very pleased to lend her support to the global initiative. Her Majesty Queen Rania also helped in the selection of the sites at the initial stages of the project and provided an exclusive narration of the global launch video that was widely spread across the internet.
This is the fifth Street View imagery collected of a major landmark in MENA, after Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and the Liwa desert in Abu Dhabi and the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt.
Google Maps Street View began in 2007 and today covers thousands of cities in 72 countries. The program includes capturing 360 degree imagery of theme parks, university campuses, pedestrian malls, landmarks and zoos.
Jordan’s historical landmarks now joins other world sites on Street View such as the Eiffel Tower, Big Ben; and natural wonders such as Grand Canyon, Great Barrier Reef in Australia, Antarctica and the Alps.
The imagery of the 30 historical sites and other sites is now available on Google Maps and can be viewed on g.co/Jordanhighlights and g.co/Petra.

تتيح للعالم التجول الافتراضي في أجمل مواقع الأردن
مصر، 23 نوفمبر 2015: بالتعاون مع جلالة الملكة رانيا العبدالله، أعلنت Google اليوم عن إطلاق أكبر خدمة تجول افتراضي للبتراء و30 موقعاً آخراً في الأردن ضمن خرائط Google التي تسمح للمستخدمين استكشاف أماكن من العالم مثل المعالم والعجائب الطبيعية والمواقع الهامة ثقافيًّا وتاريخيًّا.
واليوم أصبح بإمكان أي شخص متصل بالإنترنت التجول في البتراء، المدينة الوردية، واستكشاف البحر الميت وآثار جرش وقصر الخرانة وجبل نيبو وغيرها من المعالم الأردنية الرائعة.
وقالت جلالة الملكة رانيا العبدالله على مدونة Google الرسمية أن هذه الخدمة فتحت للعالم نافذة تطل على مملكتنا الرائعة في قلب الشرق الأوسط وتعطي لمحة أولى عمّا تكتنز الأردن من مواقع سياحية وتاريخية تنتظر الزوار.
وأضافت جلالتها أن هذه التكنولوجيا لا تربط الملايين من جميع أنحاء العالم لتعطي لمحة عن المستقبل فحسب بل تطلعهم على صور من الماضي أيضاً. وعندما نفهم أكثر عن قصص وثقافات وتاريخ بعضنا البعض، ندرك أن أوجه تشابهنا أكثر من أوجه اختلافنا. لذلك يجب علينا المحافظة على هذه الكنوز للاجيال القادمة. فهي مدخل لروايتنا الإنسانية المشتركة.
والتجول الافتراضي هو ميزة في خرائط Google، استخدم لها نظام Trekker وهو عبارة عن نظام كاميرات يتم ارتداؤه من قبل المصور على الظهر، بحيث تكون الكاميرا مثبتة على رأسه ما يتيح له التنقل في الممرات الضيقة والأماكن المخصصة للمشاة فقط، والتقاط صور لمواقع طبيعية وسياحية خلابة.
وفي هذا السياق قال مسؤول برنامج التجول الافتراضي من Google في العالم أولف سبيتزر،"يحاول فريق التجول الافتراضي الذهاب إلى أماكن رائعة وجذابة حول العالم لأننا على يقين بأن المستخدمين يحبون رؤيتها واستكشافها على الإنترنت".
وأضاف "كانت الأردن من أكثر الأماكن روعة التي زرناها ولا يمكننا إلا أن نشكر ونشيد بالتعاون الكبير والاستقبال الحار اللذين شهدناهما في الأردن. ونأمل أن تكون صور التجول الافتراضي انعكاساً فعلياً لجمال هذا البلد وغنى إرثه وحضارته."
وجاء اختيار المواقع التي صورت في هذه الخدمة ضمن تعاون شركة Google مع جلالة الملكة رانيا العبدالله التي سجلت فيديو قصير وحصري لإطلاق المشروع، تحدثت به عن البتراء ونشر على الانترنت في العالم أجمع.
وهذه التجربة الخامسة للتجول الافتراضي التي تطلقها Google عن معالم رئيسية في الشرق الأوسط وشمال أفريقيا بعد برج خليفة في دبي، وجامع الشيخ زايد وصحراء ليوا في أبوظبي، وأهرام الجيزة في مصر.
وبدأت خدمة التجول الافتراضي لخرائط Google عام 2007، وتغطي الآن آلاف المواقع الأثرية والطبيعية في 72 بلداً حول العالم. حيث يتم التقاط صور بانورامية بزاوية 360 درجة للمواقع الطبيعية والمتنزهات المتخصصة والجامعات والمراكز التجارية والمعالم السياحية وحدائق الحيوانات وغيرها.
وتنضم اليوم معالم الأردن التاريخية إلى مجموعة المواقع السياحية والأثرية العالمية التي قامت Google بتصويرها، ومنها برج إيفل، وساعة بيغ بن، وعجائب الطبيعة مثل الأخدود العظيم (غراند كانيون)، والحيّد المرجاني العظيم في أستراليا والقارة القطبية الجنوبية وجبال الألب السويسرية.
